It's not a big deal. They can always desalinate sea water if they have to, just like Israel. When you put millions of people in a dry area next to the ocean, you can pretty much expect it to come to that.

The crisis in Lake Mead is extremely ominous. The present human population in the southwest is heavily dependent on that body of water, and the electricity produced by Hoover Dam. There is a disturbing psychological disconnect between the rapidly collapsing situation and the huge lines of people still queuing up to launch recreational watercraft.

Clark County is fine. It's California who should be the ones worrying and start making the drastic changes... At 895 feet, Hoover Dam cannot release water down river to California and Mexico. Southern Nevada can still pump water at 875 feet.
      Colorado River use by state:
      California: 29%
      Colorado: 26%
      Arizona: 19%
      Utah: 11%
      Wyoming: 7%
      New Mexico: 5%
      Nevada: 2%
Nevada is at zero risk of not having water. It is up river of California.
100% of Las Vegas drain water is recycled back into the lake. (Goes through 3 treatment stages, then released back into lake.)
Nevada doesn't even use it's entire allotment of water from the Colorado River...it only uses 80% of its allotment.
We take the least and don't even use our entire amount....we also conserve and recycle the most?
Las Vegas and Nevada is not the problem!! Everyone else needs to start conserving more.
The whole Colorado River allocation needs to be updated and everyone needs to get on board with water conservation and alternative methods of getting more water.
Desalination and water pipelines will likely be needed in the near future if conservation by the river's largest users isn't taken seriously.

Hi, My X was a water engineer and in 1983 we were at lake Powell it was full and he said just wait there’s going to be water wars . The last 10 years I’ve been keeping track of how much water has been going into Powell by daily calculating the CFS flow last 2 decades big decline . I did a 4 day rafting trip down the Colorado river last year lowest water in a 100 years 5,600 CFS . The bureau has mismanaged it so bad 20 years ago there should have been no more building in the southwest but yet they just keep building homes and promising people water ?? It’s a mess I see a grand exit of people leaving and going north . • @stephenpavy2501

In Australia occasionally we have water restrictions. Most summers. You get fines if waterings lawns on days of week your street number isn't allowed. So if your last number is 3 or 7 you can water lawn that day etc. As for not having lawns, no it's better to have lawn or garden than nothing, especially artificial lawn . As lawns and gardens keep temperature down in house and in cities, so less energy used on air conditioning etc. So it's a balance of everything. Cement and plastic ain't a solution also. Native plants are a good alternative yes, as there is native or hardy lawns that need less water you can chose too.

Even if water consumption is reduced, the lake will continue to drain faster. The funnel-ish shape of the lake means that 1 foot of water at the highest levels may measure 1 million gallons, but 1 foot at the current level may be less than 100k gallons.

@@Pinkielover I get that it's an absolutely MASSIVE body of water; even in it's depleted state. I mean, they measure the damned thing in acre-ft for volume, not gallons!
I was trying to say that you can't measure lake volumes the same way you would with a vertical cylinder like a soda can. With a can, if half of the liquid is gone, then the fluid in the can is at half the height of the full can.
With a lake, the uneven shape dictates how much water remains at one water height versus that of a level that is 50 ft higher. The higher the water level, the more land the water covers as it expands outward.

my theory is the shape of the lake makes the current water level seem like it's shrinking faster when in fact it's just that particular bay and the way its shaped which makes it look like it's shrinking faster. like Mr McClain stated.

My God, this is incredible. I can't believe how little water is left.
Sometime in the early 2000's I was involved with a group of engineers and scientists who were installing water quality monitors near the "Towers" you were showing us. There were 4 or 5 of those installations all around Lake Mead. The idea was to check the water at every depth to figure out what depth to draw water from at each location. This would reduce treatment costs for the city. So much for that! It looks like there's only one depth: SHALLOW and not much water left to pump out of the lake. This is not good.

I just discovered you guys thanks to a video from HeavyDSparks the boat rescue video. Wow, this is crazy how the water levels are dropping so fast, I couldn't believe it! I believe in order to fight this drought is to provide water to essential sources only. This means eliminating water to Golf courses and ban watering lawns. Yes I know that means many jobs will be lost however this will help conserve water. Then restrict water use to residents every day. Not so long ago around 10 or 13 years ago parts of Mexico restricted water use to residents to only 3 hours per day, then water was shut off. I fear we may have to do this in order to make it last as long as possible. We have to do whatever it takes no matter how inconvenient it may become. Keep up on the updates great job!

We just haven't been getting good snow packs in the mountains in the last few years. All the reservoirs upstream from you are low and getting lower, its a real problem.
