This Cover does exactly what a great cover should. Enlightens the glory of the original artist and beautiful song, witohut overshadowing it. Its like a brilliant tribute to her work, and Peter Gabriel is amazing in all of his own rights.
Peter Gabriel started the Red Blood Orchestra and Scratch My Back Project with two restrictions. There would be no guitar and no drums. Try to cover all these songs on the album without guitar and drums. He challenged himself and beat the challenge. This is for all you haters out there. Gabriel is brilliant.
This is ungodly AWESOME! I completely have chills. I adore Regina, and this is one of my favorite songs from her. And PG is just simply one of the greatest musical artists of all time! I'm so happy for Regina to honored in this way by one of the greats, and I also think it speaks so well of Peter as a person for shining a spotlight on her like this. Love the simplicity of RS's version, love the intense drama of this version! Genius!
Even thou it's a cover I sort of consider this song to basically be here comes the flood part 2, it's like it feels like it has so much much connection to everything he has done.
Wow its so great to see a legend like Peter Gabriel show appreciation for Regina's work by covering her! Its nice to see people appreciate her. After all, imitation is the greatest form of flattery. And of course Regina fans are going to prefer Regina's version, as the original artist is often the best at capturing the mood and essence of their own song, but if a Regina fan refuses to see how awesome this version, they are just blind.
Beautiful cover of a beautiful song... Though I love the Russian poem in Regina's original, I'm glad Gabriel left it out. His "yelling" really makes this song, it's so powerful.
SELING ENGLAND BY THE POUND,FOXTROT - BEGIN TO HOPE......what can i say????one of my favourite prog artist covers - I REPEAT - covers one of my favourite 00's pop artists...The universe should explode.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My personal opinion is that Regina Spektor has a certain playfulness in her voice, something she can't ever not do, and, while it adds a certain element of insanity to this song in her version, Peter Gabriel's version emanates a feeling of tragedy and panic which much surpasses the original. Too bad he didn't also sing the russian part, those lyrics are absolutely heart-wrenching...
He's in his 60's now, it happens to everyone who's been singing their soul out for decades. Besides, he's taken a much more subdued, electronic approach in the past 10 or so years anyway, don't know why this is surprising. My wife and I have seen Regina live, and I prefer her version, but I can still respect this. Coincidentally, our son's middle name is Gabriel, after him.
It`s crazy how both versions are so different, it`s almost like their own style turn this song into something completely different, like their singing about very distant things.
I think it's great. This adaptation just gives you a different perspective. it sounds more like it has a ... more universal meaning. I definitely prefer it to the original. Peter is great
+Walter Emiliani The original is easier to like at first listen. Regina is quirky and sparkly, much like Peter was in his youth.. Obviously some don't get what he is doing here.. they seem to be annoyed he's not singing in Russian?? I can tell you, Russians can be so annoying sometimes.. one gets interested in their culture, reads their poetry, listen to their classics then they complain you don't speak their language and that makes it impossible for you to understand ..this and that.. not happy folks, if you ask me.. but I like them despite their best efforts, anyway :)
@@tudvalstone I don't think most of the complaints about the russian bit not being in there are coming from actual Russian people though. It's simply the most evocative part of the original song, and Peter Gabriel replaced it with a slightly disjointed attempt at combining central asian singing techniques with a classical arrangement. It's not bad per se, but it just doesn't pack the same punch as the original. And no, that has nothing to do with Regina being "quirky" or "sparkly". You make her sound like some airhead pop queen, when exactly what's missing from Peter Gabriel's version is the emotional depth and investment the original has.
I (uh) must go on standing You can't break that which isn't yours I (uh) must go on standing I'm not my own, it's not my choice Be afraid of the lame, they'll inherit your legs Be afraid of the old, they'll inherit your souls Be afraid of the cold, they'll inherit your blood Apres moi le deluge, after me comes the flood I (uh) must go on standing You can't break that which isn't yours I (uh) must go on standing I'm not my own, it's not my choice
Maybe if his strong, sad orchestra combined with Regina Spektor's beautiful, poetic lyrics it would be glorious. Like a Russian ballet. Nothing really beats the original.
hehe, not sure she'd be 'proud' of him. She'd certainly be honoured. :D Apparently meeting Peter Gabriel can be pretty awe inspiring. Amazing, amazing person. Does anyone know what she's covering by him on 'I'll Scratch Yours'?
It's a master piece, no doubt about it. It is also dramatically different from the Spektor's version. The orchestration is tremendous and creates and delicious ambient with some tension. However, I personally prefer the Spektor's version.
@BrazilianScopel I agree. I thought the orchestra was going to get overblown and dramatic... but it was a let-down. This song has emotional power that is lacking here.
@qwerrie actually he left the word "горит" - "goreet" which means "burning" - so he caught the main word of the poem. But i can say it's really different versions of the same song - Regina's lyrical romance and Peter's tragic symphony. p.s. I think that Peter's poor russian stopped him from using the whole russian part.
this is a good cover and the strings soud wonderful,of course nothing willl ever beat the original regina spektor is amazing and so unique and the song really neads the russian poem febuary ink because without it i think the song loses a lot of its heart.........
Personally i believe Regina's voice is so beautiful that you really don't get the whole lyrics of the song. For the longest time, this song was "I must go on STANNDING!.... la la la LA la" But Peter's allow you to get the whole feeling of the song. Personally just because Regina's voice is beautiful is why I like this version better. It's little too "happy go lucky" for the theme here.
I dunno, this is a pretty good cover. It's sad that there's no Pasternak part, but at the same time, he probably didn't think he could pronounce the Russian correctly.
Guude KaWe
Après Moi is my favourite song... it's funny analyse other person singing your most memorable song... I must say that he has a great voice, but I miss so much the piano... Whatever, it's a good version... I like male voices perfoming Regina's songs.
I digress with the comment before mine. Regina might be unbeatable at her own game, which is why you take the field in a different game. PG isn't trying to be Regina. He's trying to make the song different. That's what a cover should be. And the bonus is that Regina will cover a PG song, which I quite look forward to.
I completely agree! He is trying to be slow for the suspense factor, but the orchestra is the only part of the song that ever escalates to a climax. I much preferred Arcade Fire's version of My Body is a Cage.. and Regina's version of this song is so much better than this too
I think I actually love this version more than the original. I can't say the same for all the versions in Scratch my Back, but I love this reinterpretation of a wonderful song. The orchestration is just beautiful and I love Gabriel as a singer too.
It's good. But without the Russian verse, it's not complete. I always think that if you want to sing any of Regina Spektor's songs, sing them in full. If you miss just a verse, you might miss the point of the entire song. And what's the deal with Anya, Sasha, and Natasha?
from my persective ( which is one of not even knowing who regina spektor is ) this song is gorgeous. i've been trying to track down some information on this tune since i purchased Scratch My Back and I'm not going to lie, it's one of those things that just gets better to me everytime i hear it.
Luc Alberts The irritating part is that the Pasternak poem is the best part of the song for many fans of the song. So while the instrumentals are gorgeous, the omission for whatever reason kind of ruins it for me, too. Very disappointed.
It's amazing how people can hear things so differently. I always enjoy the orchestral aspects of Peter Gabriel's songs, but find his voice to be lacking and I don't like how slow he always makes his songs. I love the piano work in Regina's original and her vocal range.. As well as the Russian poetry. I feel that she understands the meaning of the song and Peter's lost that in translation
Much like his cover of the Magnetic Fields' "Book of Love," this just does nothing for me. He took all of the power out of it. I'll give him credit though, he seems to have good taste in other's music.
I was wondering the same. @Nowhere Found wrote: "Anya, Sasha and Natasha are Anna Politkovskaya, Alexander Litvinenko and Natalia Estemirova. All killed by russian regime". Also, I guess what you've called "merit" is "gorit", a word in russian, which is in the poem. "Fevral'. Dostat' chernil i plakat'! Pisat' o fevrale navzryd, Poka grohochuschaya slyakot' Vesnoyu chernoyu gorit".

Epic Fail Peter Gabriel didn't cope the russian part of the lyric. Instead of it he just adds the two russian names in the end - Sasha, Natasha - just for no reason.
It's simply not Apre Moi without the russian verse. A good cover offers a new perspective, and this one is too incomplete to really offer anything. Perhaps another artist could have collaborated with Peter Gabriel to provide the russian lyrics, ya know, somebody like Regina Spektor.
It's so cool that Peter Gabriel covered a Regina Spektor song!!! We should just remember that.
This Cover does exactly what a great cover should. Enlightens the glory of the original artist and beautiful song, witohut overshadowing it. Its like a brilliant tribute to her work, and Peter Gabriel is amazing in all of his own rights.
this cover is brilliant, it compliments the original and adds a new nuance to it
What I like the most in the Regina's version is the "epic" feeling, achieved by the piano and the drums. Unfortunatelly it is missed in this one.

Really nice comment!
Peter Gabriel is my hero Every new album is much better and different than the last one He improves and improves he has no limits
This is really good. If he and Regina Spektor did a duet of this, it'd be brilliant.
Even thou it's a cover I sort of consider this song to basically be here comes the flood part 2, it's like it feels like it has so much much connection to everything he has done.
so true

I love this version so much, it's beautiful, the whole album is very good
so beautiful, I love this version very much - it's a masterpiece
This was used in one of my high school marching shows and it just hits different
This whole album is amazing. Sting aint got shit on Sir Peter Gabriel!
Beautiful cover of a beautiful song...

It's a great adaptation, its only failing being that it isn't Regina Spektor playing it solo on piano.
He's in his 60's now, it happens to everyone who's been singing their soul out for decades. It`s crazy how both versions are so different, it`s almost like their own style turn this song into something completely different, like their singing about very distant things.
Perfecta !!!
The vocals on this track are not as powerful, but his concert performances are perfect power. Intoxicating.

wonderful
I'm sure Regina Spektor is proud of him.
