Orbán in Hungary: the rise of populism - Docu - 2018

  • Populism is on the rise in central and eastern Europe, including in Hungary where George Soros lead the post soviet dictatorship transition towards an open society with democratic values. Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán means there's a no migrants policy, and that the press and the George Soros university have been declared enemy of the state.
In Budapest, the Central European University has been founded and funded by the billionaire George Soros to propagate the values of an 'open society'. But these Western European values, such as the separation of powers, free media and freedom of education, are under pressure in the run-up to the elections on April 8.
It is generally assumed that the seated popular and populist Prime Minister Orbán will win by force majeure, but nothing is certain. The atmosphere in Hungary has changed radically since the fall of the wall in 1989. Billionaire, speculator and philanthropist George Soros then conceived the plan to shape and financially support the transition from the Soviet dictatorship to an open, democratic society. He saw an important role for a university that was to be set up: the Central European University in Budapest. He recruited students from more than twenty former Soviet states for this. They were to form the future intellectual elite that would protect and shape democracy and an open society in the former communist countries.
Now, a quarter of a century after its launch, the Central European University and George Soros have been declared public enemy in particular by the nationalist government of Orbán. Recently, 70,000 Hungarians took to the streets to protest, but Orbán has not yet been blocked by Europe. The struggle of the nationalist government against an institution that advocates an 'open society' is typical of the broader development in Central and Eastern Europe. Even in Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Bulgaria, nationalist parties win the elections. It raises the question of what went wrong. Has the West underestimated the desire for an own identity and populism in Central Europe?

      Than why aren't you here?
After all Germany is such a bad country, you better come back home.
From Romania to poland every east eu country has a growing economy.
Our growth rate is actually lower than the neighbour countries.
      325 Ft = 1 Eur lol
      In Hungary
Every 3rd Marriage ends up with divorce.
Every year we are 20 000 people shorter, because birthrate is low.
The most children are born in Szabolcs-Szatmár Bereg county, but still more people die, and less people are born every year.
Of course there is no terror (Bőnyi rendőrgyilkosság)
The political scene is stable, partly because the opposing parties are useless (I mean really)
      I think it's a good docu.

If that globalist part of the treacherous brethren... smiles and is happy to send out his newly graduated minions brain washed and ready to spread their filth all over the world.... then guaranteed that its 100% wrong and should be stopped. Like the west which is now in 2019 infested with this insane agenda and destruction of literally everything! This garbage ,this so called soros institution needs to be shut down! Indoctrination, ideologies and sick perversions have now even infiltrated our schools and have pointed our children BUT the resistance is alive and battling this insane global sexual perversion ideologies along with the rest these institutions produce and try to spread world wide. Hungary is doing great keep fighting the open borders agenda and the fight to keep out parasites from illegal states trying to gobble up everything from within as the jobbik party has stated clearly who and what they are and where they come from!

You have to be popular to become elected. This is nothing new. Calling people Populists as if they are something out of the Nazi war years, because you do not like their politics is ridiculous. A populist could be from the left, or the right, all elected governments are popular with the voters, thats how they got the job.

Firstly, Hungary is in Central-Europe ... just to clarify the geography ...
Secondly, I hope you are dealing with the rise of populism in your own country as well, while it is being fueled by the mainstream EU politics just like it does all over in the EU. Yes, rise of populism is an big issue, but not just in Central Europe, but all over the EU. It is very hard to keep it under control, and your country, the Netherlands, is quite an example of this!
Thirdly, what kind of a manipulative biased thing is this?! Even the subtitles are messed up ...they have nothing to do with what is being said on the video!!! Interviewing a mayor, who even admits himself that his town was almost not hit at all by illegal migratory waves, but he is obviously having a hostile political position towards the Hungarian Government?! The Two Tailed Dog Party?! WTF?! Talking to the CEU but not to other prestigious universities, from which some are older than the USA?! I mean, come on! At least pretend to be objective! This "documentary" is so biased, that it is insulting. Shame on you VPRO!

At the risk of sounding presumptuous, the first minute of this documentary unfairly disparages the idea of the necessity of stringent national borders for countries who have spent the entirety of their national history at the doorstep of the USSR, Ottoman Empire, and other historical empires contra to the liberal ideologies of Western Europe. I'm definitely willing to see where this documentary goes, but using a Halloween mask to characterize the notion that strong national borders are critical to maintaining sovereignty in these countries strikes me as an American as insulting.

You have the feeling that the world as you know it, doesn't exist anymore. You get such vast changes that people can't orient themselves and they're very much in a position to overreact.."

I think people need their national identity. The EU kinda seems like it attempts to erase identity and create a one size fits all approach for all countries, and cultures, in the EU. Their culture, their history, etc... is all important. I think those things are worth preserving in a way that suits each specific country. We have to be careful in over-vilifying "nationalism"... it used to be called patriotism here in America... but now it's called nationalism. Just a little turn of phrase, makes it bad all the sudden. I also think getting away from the Euro may be good. It may be better in a modern economy, to go back to individual currencies. I think in some countries you will see a significant push back against political correctness. Make no mistake... Political correctness is an unequaled force thats just as strong as any dictatorship or totalitarian government. Political correctness steamrolled America and took over the work place, schools, media, music ,movies, pop culture, sexuality, etc.... Political correctness is, in reality, Cultural Marxism. So you will see certain countries ban a newspaper, or push back against a news program, etc... It's a sloppy way of doing it, but it is a blow to political correctness...which is ok. It's fair to fight back against it. Stuff is practically banned or vilified all the time by using Political Correctness.... So if Orban fights back using the Lefts own tactics... thats fine by me. If it's a government leader doing it... but the majority supports it.... how can you argue it? Yes a minority will fight back. But people who don't like political correctness, also tend to believe that the majority make the rules. There are not a whole lot of ways to fight political correctness... it's brilliant by design. And it creeps slowly, but it's an extremely effective tool for the extreme left. So there will be, at first, sloppy push backs against it... but it will level out. If you are against political correctness, that does not make you a racist or bigot... but thats what the Left calls anyone who resists. Yes there should be minority rights, but not minority rule, and thats what political correctness leads to. Political correctness automatically discounts and vilifies a full half of US citizens. So thats very dictator-like in my mind. The brilliance of it, is that it's not an actual physical dictator... it's a viral thought process. So then they try to make "nationalism" and "populism" completely bad words.... They say that patriotism by the majority is bad. "Populism" just means something is popular with the majority. "Nationalism" basically means love of your country. Yes it can, and has gone down dark roads before, but it has also gone down good roads. So they are not automatically bad. The real global fight will boil down to majority or minority rule.

Can't believe what's happened to Hungary. So sad to see it go the way of the likes of Turkey, Poland, and many other countries.

    History?
Let's talk about the silenced history.
CEU has originally opened its doors in then Chehoslovakia, after a few years Cheh's throw them out because of the university's damaging views on society.
The Hungarian ex-communist government took them in, the very communists that SOROS fought against in the communist are...:)
But of course, this info is not pc...:)

VPRO is a Dutch public broadcaster. Aren't we allowed to discuss Hungary anymore?

  • @Bvic3

Absolutely shameful from Vpro. This is/was my favourite documentary channel, with very little moralism in the way journalists speak and no fearful music. And then comes this one way hit piece, absolutely hidding the very legitimate arguments against the insane cosmopolitan policies. Refusing to think and hidding fundamental issues under the carpet only leads to much more violent chaos in the next decade.

      Hello Bvic3,
We are sorry you feel that way. VPRO like all the other broadcasters cannot make programs that will please everyone 100%. This is also that that makes VPRO different. Exploring different perspectives. It's interesting to discuss it afterwards and to have a debate about what is talked about in the documentaries. Thank you for sharing your opinion with us.

The documentary doesen't have enoguh depth, the situation is a lot more complex & it is kind of suggesting things or steering the audience in a certain direction but, with that said, I'm sure it's not done on purpose. My 1st comment is to harsh, I'll admit that :)
