your last two sentences about your lathe, prevented me from saying something about overengineering 😁. nice job mate!
Jörgen Börg us engineers have to have an excuse to use big tools :)
Exactly my thought
Same here
Haha, yeah, lathe ALL the things!
@@18minimus18 YOUR LIFE MUST BE A BIG CONFUSION.-
ENGINEERS MAKE DRAWS, TOOLS ARE FOR MECHANICS,
I am impressed. For someone who declares that he doesn't know what he is doing you did a great job
That Swirl Pattern is called Engine Turning. The nose of The Spirit of St. Louis is covered with it. Merry Christmas.🎅
bullwhip johnson it's also called jewelling
(specifically in gun smithing)
or spot polishing
Thank you. Merry Christmas :)
JohnnyQ90 your work is awsome.
Also called "perlage" among watch makers. Generally "engine turning" is a term mainly used by machinists, whereas watch makers use other terms.
Once again we are so overwhelmingly pleased to watch this graft of swirl patterns being performed, this is helpful to us. When you live in an isolated desert you love that we have RUclips. This is a good way for us to try the pattern on our plates. Your plate looks nice when you apply the pattern to it. Thank you.
Way back when I was building cabinets we did this but just used the angle grinder scotch bright pads on a drill press. Set the stop on your press to make the markings even. Also different grade pads will leave different textures in the swirl.
How big were the swirls you used to make? I feel like an angle grind would be huge
Mike Builds I should have said die grinder not angle sorry. They come in 1.5" and 3" pads that I know of. We used the 1.5". They are just little scotch bright type pads you screw onto a rubber disk, so I'm sure you could even cut them down smaller if you wanted.
tommy Oooooo lol I was picturing 5 inch circles with an angle grinder and all I could think was wow that seems rather excessive
Great work !
I made one also a few months ago .
If you like try making the end of the cork to have a slight radius that way when you use it you know the the center will have some pressure on it .. The abrasive will work better in the center.
Love the work you do on your lathe - it's exquisite and I am mesmerized. Thanks! I got my therapy fix for today! :-) All the best, Rob
Great job. My metal work teacher used to use wooden dowel in the drill press smeared with cutting compound, came up a treat.
That sounds like a better method. This method here looks inconsistent, those swirls have too many inconsistent high and low spots for my taste.
Really good lathe skill. You made a beautiful work done. Thanks for sharing.
Nice! Reminds me of some engine turning I did long ago, using a drill press and a scrap of wooden dowel with some rouge and a few drops of oil.
Very nice. I love to see videos that show the mistakes and the take aways from doing something new. Great videos. Keep them coming.
I like this. The cork is a nice shock absorbing material for when the abrasive pad comes in contact with the work surface!
It's a really beautiful finishing and you can actually just roll up a piece of sandpaper and chuck directly in your drill! I will maby try it later for some sheetmetal in my car
I like watching you use your lathe
That's what you call over engineering something lol 😁
Great work love it
The lathe is just hypnotic
Merry Christmas 🎄
I have no idea what was just made, but It was so satisfying watching this video 😂
Oddly satisfying! Good work!
If I had a metal lathe I'd use it to whip my scrambled eggs and blend my milkshakes
I can unsterstand why you want to use your lathe, i love that my self just playing around:D i hope i can have my own some day, so far work will have to do tho they are cnc. Love your videos keep up the good work
What an awesome channel! Subscribed! Never change! Lol
another trick i learn was a wooden dowel and lapping compound, low grit for swirls and high grit for polish.
It’s called “Jewel Pattern” or “Jeweling” in the gunsmith world.
Also “ engine turning “
Hilarious, I kept thinking, "the man loves his lathe"
Nice- A tool that is as beautiful as it is functional.
Can you make a video explaining everything your doing on the laythe, and marking techniques for placement,
Love your skill and dedication! Just wondering how would you make a lollipop?
first time I've ever witnessed machining cork, very clever shiny swirl maker Johnny!
now you just need to make a jig to put down uniform patterns!
Everything you make is always so beautifully done, I can't help but watch your videos even on Christmas. I do think you should introduce yourself though.
your videos make me want to buy a lathe
I really like the scotchbrite idea, I was just thinking of doing this on one of my projects and this is better than what I had in mind. I am also now going to try using a screw to mount the pad so it is easy to replace. It may not work, I won't know until I try. First thing in the morning, that is job one.
Thanks for a good video and idea, Cheers from John, Australia.
Edit: I did this morning made a similar tool. I, as mentioned used a screw to fasten the abrasive. It works well. Cheers from John, Australia.
Nice video.
I use a wooden dowel in a drill press with fine lapping compound on the surface of the part.
Nice job bud...I spent 40 years in the machine tool business and you were having fun! Keep at it! Subscribed cause I like to see someone who knows what they are doing operating the equipment like they should...wish they had this kind of equipment when I was in the business but the smallest available to me was a LeBlond 15×30 Engine Lathe...way too expensive.
it turns out even better with a standard cup wire brush
Cool. I like how you work the cork n scotchbrite pad. I thought it was going to be done with cork. My dad showed me how to do that, in smaller scale , with.a pencil eraser chucked up in a drill.
This is exactly why I want a lathe... so I can say exactly this.. "I just wanted an excuse to use my lathe".. Bravo.
Nice little lathe. 👍
Could you use that tool in a cnc mill to get symmetrical patterns! that would be extremely satisfying!
Chuck that to a CNC mill and you can get very fast results that are uniform, have done the same tool to pretty up some metal parts.
I use a wood dowel with a coarse pad the ideal swirl is the table on a 3-5deg tilt to make one end fade away
Wire brush bit would have sufficed but you are correct, any excuse to use the lathe is a good excuse. Well done.
Dope vid and outro theme
I like the jam at the end🎻🥁🎸🎶
Thank you I did not have to translate that your style is universal
How do you mount your rotary tool to the lathe? I never tried to do that, seems very useful!
Used to do it with pencil eraser in a drill press.
Shuner Abrasives Co. makes a mandrell to go in a drill and a larger one to fit a pneumatic buffer, that has "ScotchBrite" textures on it. We used to use them to "Jazz-up" the doors on cabinets on stainless steel, so that they would have a "scratch resist" characteristic to them. You see this surfacing alot on re-conditioned surfaces. This is also widly used inside and outside of fire trucks and restaurant cabinet equipment, and other areas that might get scratched up. Scratches dont show up that bad on that surface. The trick is, don't try to put a lot of pressure on the mandrell. You want it as "clean" as possible. If you dont watch, it will try to walk with you, and thats hard to clean up. THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEO !!!
very cool, thanks for sharing.
Interesting. I always wondered how they did that. It was common on cigarette cases in the past.
We just used to use a thick dowel with some wire brush like paper glued to the end. :D
That last swirl is fucking with my OCD so much.......
I thought it looked pretty nice. I tried to do that quite a few years ago using a small wire wheel but it didn't work out as well.
Do you save your lathe shavings and recast them or sell it as scrap?
Great video just a tip you can get the same effect by eliminating the green sponge and just the cork and valve grinding compound .Cheers From Australia .
Massimo from Italy . Great job !👍👍👍
These swirls would look nice on a metal sphere
I'd like to make a guitar pick-guard in stainless steel with this pattern, pretty metal.
Beautiful overkill on tool making! 👍💥👌😃
what kind of lathe do you use ?
Johnny, How do you mount your Dremel tool on the cross-feed platform?
Btw, that's called jeweling. Common in gunsmithing and the like. It uses a similar setup, although it's usually a rubber tip with different grit abrasives that use friable aluminum oxide and the like to get a fine and smooth finish. So Flitz, Mother's Mag Polish, Simichrome, etc.
Neat idea with the cork though, I wouldn't have thought of that one. If you do a scotch brite pad again, get one of the grey automotive paint ones they make. They are a lot less aggressive for a finer finish.
well you convinced me to buy a lathe.
I am watching this vedio more than 3 times ( i love your dedication over metal job) love from India
Thanks man!
Great. Please show other patterns too
Cratex, a rubberized abrasive is made for this purpose
some diamond paste and not using the scotchbrite would prob. yield a nicer more "round" pattern. =)
can you make something like that for a brushed Aluminium look? BTW Great video as always
What lathe is that? And would you recommend it?
Out of curiosity, if I ever try to make this myself: is the scouring pad necessary? Couldn't you just use a wooden dowel and load it with some polishing/grinding compound?
Muito bem feito e trabalhoso para uma aplicação tão simples.
Johnny can you please make a secend channel with all the video's you have on here? But then in real life time😊 so we can see how long it takes too make it?
embed a little abrasive compound into the end of that unit and it will help on the pattern a little bit.
Awesome!!!
seems like a lot of work for something you could make from a dremel or air die grinder bit.
Cool video
round plate with hole in middle, round bar fitting into hole with a groove machined, welded ontop of the hole and immediatedly quenched, PIB used to mount the polishing pieces, easily dismounted after use
you can get PIB from bubble gum or tape, stripped with naptha or "ronsonol" lighter fluid (same thing) gasoline doesnt seem to extract PIB well, a bit of the liquid can be added or the solvent can be left to evaporate
Genial!!! Me gustó mucho
Cool
What are these swirls used for? I only saw them on bathroom or toilet window glass wrapping material to let the light come in but dont let anyone outside the room to see the view
Aurimas Knieža
Nothing, just decoration. Very mesmerizing
There used to hide the apperance of scratches on metal surfaces. Fire Departments have used them on their trucks for a long time now.
dust bucket does this also hold true for watches? Nearly every watch has this pattern, I thought it was because of precise machining at first but now I don't know really
That kind of pattern is also seen on the back of Swiss watches
primary decoration, but it also holds oil better which can be useful against rust etc
Where’s the next video Johnny?
That annotation at the end was a good idea. I was just about to say that this is about as much overkill as building a pantorouter solely for sharpening a pencil.
whats the background song at the beginning?
You can do the same thing with steel wool by hand.
Nice
What model lathe are you using?
Great video as always.
Optimum Tu2004V.
What type of lathe are you using
Ok.... time to list a few on Amazon for us
For a more consistent pattern, use sandpaper.
A smear of fine valve lapping paste on the tip can make for interesting swirls too.
Say you were doing a car dash panel, blue it, mark out a grid and swirl on the grid lines, starting at the bottom.
Don't start at the top as it looks pants...
Can you make a lunar lander
nutella glue! cool tool!
can you make a jet engine with legit working afterburner?
what is this spinning machine called?
hardwood doweling with fine grinding paste
You have a lot of machines you can do what you want
what machine model you use?
We call that Spot facing finish.
非常酷!非常喜欢你制作的这个视频。圣诞节快乐!
