For the template go to incompetech.com... and put as many divisions as you want, depending on what you want to make.
In one of my next projects, I need to drill out equally spaced holes on a small brass ring. Since I don't have a mill with an indexing head, I thought of using my lathe and a very simple angular syystem to make these holes. As you can see from the video, it consists of a few, easily accesible parts and can be built pretty fast. The accuracy of the holes on this particular part that is on the video was at 0.05mm, which for now it's ok, but if I was more careful it would have been even lower than that.

Thanks for the great educational video, and a huge thanks for not ruining it with crappy background music. I don't know why some people are compelled to add annoying background music throughout the video.

    Hi Johnny,
I had been put off indexing because of the expensive and complicated gadgets required.
Looking at your idea, it's so simple. Fantastic effort in making a simple but efective indexing wheel.
I will make one along these lines, thanks for sharing your idea on utube..

I own a smaller optimum lathe and with some fiddling I managed to adapt your system to it, making it even more compact.
It's a really good idea and fairly easy to install and remove.

I've seen far more complicated (and not to mention expensive) methods of doing what you're doing, it's beautifully simple.

In theory, you don't even really need the pointer arrangement. You could just score a line on the spindle clamp. It would also be reasonably easy to modify this idea to use something like the quick release lever of a bicycle seat post to make locking/unlocking the spindle clamp a much quicker process, and removing the need for the screwdriver. That said, you've come up with quite an ingeniously budget friendly solution there. I'm impressed.

That was pretty cool, Liked it. For the pointer I would use the one of the two screws on that bar to the top right of the dial ring you made, at time index 6:47. You could use a bolt with a threaded post on top and then use a turn nut to be able to remove the pointer any time it's not used or if you want to remove it to change the dial ring. Very nice video, I've been thinking on doing something similar for awhile now. Just need to get off my butt and do it.
Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith

I would make sure of accuracy by gluing the pointer into the dowel. Didn't see you do thi. Knowing my luck it would move half way through!

  • @aserta

Suggestion. Instead of using a paper and arrow system, grab a bit of Plexiglas and using a print, drill holes using your drill press.
Then, that disc, put it where the paper is, and instead of the arrow, grab a piece of metal that is flexible, like a piece of measuring tape or a metal ruler. Drill a hole, add a screw, round said screw's end in to a ball (and make sure the screw fits in the holes of the disc), then using either a pre-existent hole in the lathe or a new hole affix the flexible indicator to the lathe.
When you want to advance to the next position, lift the metal tab, move the chuck and drop the nubbin in the next hole. For safety and for peace of mind, you can keep the locking mechanism you've made, maybe add a small knob so you can ditch the screw driver.
Doing this, or similar, will greatly improve your precision as it will not rely on the eye coordination or on the screw being tightened to keep the position.
    Cheers.

Probably accurate enough for home shop use. He's not building nuclear weapons initiators. The human eye (young ones anyway) can achieve .001"-.003" accuracy on aligning a pointer to a line.

What kind of drill is that you have setup on your cross slide? I have been trying to figure something out to do side drilling. . . Please let me know, I'd really appreciate it. I wanted to put around a 6mm end mill in a chuck to mill fins on a turbine diffuser. Looking further, I see it is a dremel attachment, you just put it in the tool holder just like a tool?
    Thanks

    • @joshuamckown3145
      @joshuamckown3145 6 лет назад

Hey, I was looking into duplicating his setup myself, so I did some checking. If you search "Dremel Lathe" on ebay, you should find a few different versions of the attachment Johnny is using. He also has a video posted of him modifying that tool, so you can get a good look at it.
beyond that, I'm pretty sure he's just using a regular Dremel flex shaft with 3-jaw chuck and rotary tool, easy to find on amazon or your local home improvement store.
Of course, I'm surmising all of that, so I may not be completely correct.

use a digital level , it is much simpler and accurate. Today you can find for less than 20$
The best way is to stick it oa one of the chuck jaw, set your first hole to "0" and rotate manually the chuck to 72 deg, 144 deg... etc...
