Somehow I'd missed seeing this coverage until now. This is my town. My heart was again in my throat reliving it. The footage of the water spout at the courthouse is reflective of why it has taken so long to repair. Yes, the spire having become airborne was more dramatic, but was the water damage from the sprinkler systems that ran for nearly 30 mins before able to shut off that did the bulk of the interior damage. Thank you for capturing that which was beyond words....It's not an understatement to say that we did not need the Derecho of 8-10-2020. :(
I was in Marshalltown that day looking at farm equipment at the AGCO dealer there. My dad and I left there and drove north through town and when I got north of town, I thought that the clouds looked nasty so we turned around and went back south. I made it back to old hwy 30 headed west to go home. I was about a mile west of the AGCO dealer location looked north and seen the tornado ripping stuff apart through town. I turned at the next road north to see if i could watch it but could not see it any longer.
Hello! I see you have this listed as Creative Commons with reuse allowed, just want to make sure we can use this on air at KGAN-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for an upcoming special on this tornado. Stunning video, great capture!
It still surprises me that pretty much all of the residental areas it went near after passing through the courthouse were left completely intact. Granted I got to see the town two years AFTER the tornado, but still. Good to know that a lot of the places I knew when I was a young child are still around.
That was truly incredible footage! Everybody else stopped or turned around, but you kept chasing it! Once you got to the dead end, I thought you were finished, but then you get out of the car! Holy moly! 😹
Truly, you are braver than I. To be able to drive, obey stop-signs and traffic lights and maintain a respectable speed....well, I congratulate you on your great footage!
weird that there was a pipe on top of the courthouse that got busted. You don't think of water pipes as being on top of buildings but I guess it makes sense! funny seeing it yanked off and a big geyser! LOL hope there was not oo much damage to that lovely courthouse!
I was headed south probably about 30 seconds before the 0:59 timestamp. I was working behind fareway and saw the wall cloud rotation around the corner of the building. I looked around the corner and sure enough saw the tornado. I jumped in my truck and went around front and warned people in the parking lot, and took off southbound.
Wow good catch i did not see that! That is a scary face like Voldemort from harry potter! Did you watch the faces in the cloud video on my channel too?
I do have one request if you can possibly do this; is there any way you can keep the audio running during the whole video in the future? I know you can't change this one, so it'd be unrealistic for me to ask you to change it. Also, I heard a sort-or whining sound probably at around 0:50, and I wondered if that was from a siren? I also thought I heard one in the distance. I use Bos headphones with Dolby Atmos for headphones, and being totally blind since birth, I rely heavily on my sense of hearing to try to capture the "view" as realistically as I can or at least like a movie of my mind. I've experienced two tornadoes directly, and I hope I don't have to go through another one, but if I do, I want to be able to keep my cool and do everything I can to stay safe. Thanks for the great video, too, or at least what I can hear of it.
Our home took a direct hit. Never been so terrified in all my life. It was the stuff of nightmares. I thought we were going to die. So helpless. Just trying to shield my babies and pray to God to please make it quick and painless. I must have a friend in Jesus because He spared us, and our home, while significantly damaged, was still liveable. SO much destruction. Never ever want to see the likes of that again.
I am so thank full you and your family are ok, i too felt the same and prayed to our lord ! one of the most helpless feeling and situations i have ever been in.
It's not. It's my home town, and it's changed greatly since my childhood. I wouldn't live in this drug dealer/tweaker hole Barrio now if you paid me...
Thank you, still rebuilding from the tornado in some areas. But 2 years later the derecho did more wide spread damage on top of it. Watch my other videos on my channel.
I remember when this happened I was at family dollar with my family and we was sitting in the car waiting for my bro to come out and it started forming next to us ;-;
My family owned a gas station….I have photos of .60-.70€ cents per gallon! 16 ounce glass bottles of pop for a quarter…. 89 cents old Milwaukee quarts…lol
4 times that day and minutes before it hit up town...so everyone was desensitized to the warnings at that point. 20 minutes in the Derecho we recently experienced...and that was worse then the tornado!
Well…I was a little distracted and concerned for the people and businesses in the tornados path, after it disembarked our town I went directly to the retirement home to help, to my amazement everyone for the most part were ok. I will contact and officer to give me a ticket if you so wish?
@@JayHook67 Yeah, I'd say you handled that very well. I don't think you have anything to worry about. I've heard several documentaries about this tornado like the one from the Weather Channel and Nick Stewart's video, and I'd say it sounds like a very nice little town despite the drug dealers. I really hope y'all are getting back on your feet again after that and the Derecho. I may be totally blind, but I can picture in my mind this town being so much like the Quad Cities area before all this happened. I love the way the air smells there, and I can picture nicely built homes with Petunias blooming in the front or back yards. My mother's family came from there, and my Uncle Don still lives in Orean, il. I hope I spelled that town correctly. Anyway, keep up the great work, and I look forward to listening to your other videos. Heather
That wasn’t that scary for me because I live on country club lane on the outskirts of town (I don’t live there anymore so u can’t rob me) we didn’t loose power or electricity at all we were watching a movie I remember looking around after and almost crying my mom was talking about how she went to pick up something at my grandmas they went into the basement and we’re hugging in the bathtub plot twist it’s my dads mom

Nice video. I used to stay in Marshalltown back in the day while doing road construction in tama county. Love that town. Best western regency inn.

I have watched several Marshalltown tornado videos and have yet to hear a siren?
There were 4 earlier alerts. The 4th one just minutes before the tornado entered the city limits.
There's footage from the courthouse cam(s) on RUclips. Pretty crazy. Thanks for posting this. 😎

I was at marshalltown in 2009 to 2012 working for jbs slaugtery house, i miss this beautiful town and its wonderful native people ery nice people
Thank you! Hope you left for better opportunities! Recovery is slow and has definitely changed the town.
That day was a weird day I left work to go home on the bus until I got home and heard tornadoes where touching down in places. That was great footage.
My hometown! Thanks, you did an amazing job filming this!

@@heatherstub I had to edit it due to a phone call I got in the middle of the chase.

You had to pass my house?
I probably did!
Nicely captured!
Thank you I thought the tornado was bad then we had a massive Derecho that nearly took me out 2 years later, look at that video on my channel
Marshalltown, Iowa looked like a nice place, beautiful country before the tornado. I hope everything is better there now. Thanx for posting this.
writer125 it’s not we got hit by a dreacho

Glad he didn't get hit by it, this thing was a beast
