    He was in South Korea and got in a bar fight. Then he kicked the door on a police vehicle that responded to the scene. He served over a month in jail for this. Then he was to fly back to the US to face more discipline. And then he does this? Keep him. I’m tired of our citizens, especially if you’re military, acting stupid. Other countries don’t play around like we do. He deserves to find out.

    When I was in Germany in the early 70s a GI took a deuce and a half truck and drove across the border into Czechoslovakia. The US Army sent the Czechs a message saying "You can keep the guy but we'd like the truck back." The next morning the guy, without the truck, was delivered to the border crossing and handed over to US authorities.

      Similar things happened already. In 60s James Joseph Dresnok ran to North Korea to avoid court martial and died 2016 there and Charles Robert Jenkins also cross the border to avoid to be deployed to Vietnam War.

    Pvt 2 and a disciplinary issue. This means he is somebody who had either been in the army less than a year as you normally make PFC after a year with more than six months in or he was a higher rank before and got busted down for alleged misconduct or substandard performance

    Facts:
    1 .He was already in trouble with UCMJ and on his way home to be punished.
    2. He went over to North Korea on HIS OWN - disobeyed his order.
    3. His family meant very little to him and likewise. Sad but true. People with decent family will NEVER understand this one.
    BUT his life just went from bad to worse, he could've easily faced UCMJ punishment, get demoted, finish his contract, and STILL be honorably discharged. Start a new life after.
    Those options NO LONGER existed. He is 100% dishonorable discharge now (stays with you for LIFE) and I very much doubt the US will try very hard to get him back.

    This dude been in south korea prison for more then 1 year cuz i seen that dude and he was in my unit while I was in south korea but i came back redeploy 8 month ago and the chain of command abandoned him and left him there to rot in prison. This guy are required to have 1 or more nco to escort him everywhere he goes or else they will have a man hunt looking for him. The thing he did in south korea while he was there would make you question the authenticity of the news cuz they withholding a bunch of information. This isnt his first time in international news. He was in all over south korean news because of the thing he did it was actually so bad everyone in my unit given up on this dude and sent him to another unit for the time being. He was about to be sent back to my unit before he escaped

    Was in the Air Force and went to the DMZ years ago. This is sad. We can put this man down and laugh at his absolutely awful decision but this man has mental health issues. No sane person would do this. Call it a cultural or generational issue but he lacks basic understanding and he thought this decision was wise. More and more people are unhinged and we will see more people make stupid life altering choices. The world is falling apart day by day.

      It was dumb, and it was a crime. But this is where "no soldier left behind" matters. Get him home, and let him face appropriate discipline. Until he comes back to our custody we need to do whatever possible to get him back.

    This is what I don't get. It's not that close from Incheon to Panmunjom. About 40 miles and 3 hours by car. And those tour groups go through security checkpoint and screened. How did an AWOL get past all that?

    Within a year N.K. will give him a Japanese wife kidnapped off a fishing vessel in international waters, and he'll be the lead villain in anti- western propaganda films. It was actually a pretty good life for the guys who defected years earlier, they achieved something of a celebrity status in that country.

    How does a soldier awaiting disciplinary action and awaiting transportation to the USA……leave the airport and join a tourist group to the DMZ? What a sad joke? The North Koreans may not return him and I am pretty sure he will regret what he did….once he experiences North Korean “hospitality “ in that sad and repressive country.

    It depends on the length of his MOS ( job) training, but it is almost impossible to get through basic and AIT (if it is still called that) without being at least a PFC without having prior disciplinary issues.

      You can leave basic as a PVT or PV2. PFC if you made top honors. and what youre referring to is OSUT (one station unit training). But truth be told, if you have discipline issues in basic, two things can happen: one you get recycled or two: you get a chapter for failure to adapt. Either way its a general discharge.

    There was a documentary about a soldier who ran away to N.K. during the Korean War and how “great” he had it. So I wonder if Private King saw that and decided that that he’d escape the big meanies of the US military to go live in an authoritarian and totalitarian society.
