Yaesu FL-2100 repair - Part1, fixing the usual faults (Ham Radio Tube Amplifier)

  • I had these 2 Yaesu PA's sitting on my project pile for quite a while, both were in rather poor state with the usual faults.
    The Sommerkamp unit (FL2277), which is literally identical to the FL-2100, also suffered from an over-enthusiastic delivery driver, it has lots of cracked capaciors and a bent case.
    Since i have moved to a place with less neighbours, it was the right time for looking into a bit of QRO, The legal limit in rhe UK is 400W only, so not much we can do, but still 6dB more than the IC751A running barefoot.
    This part shows the faults and some fixes, also the initial tests of the repaired unit and explains some precautions if those PA's were sitting around unused for a long time.
    Part 2 covers some finer details and improvements, it now produces about 350W output (on 80,40 and 20m) with rather dull tubes. I have odered a new set of "Golden Dragon" 572B's, pretty much the only affordable option i could find. If they arrive in tme, i will add the results in part 2 as well.

    Working on my FL 2100B at the moment. Your Video is very informative. I'm learning the circuitry and replacing capacitors and resistors. Thanks very much for the videos. They are a big help... N6PKT / M0BWX

    Here is a small fix for FL2100. The capacitors C8 and C9 220pF (between grids and ground ) are too small , this affects the amp performace for bands below 20m. Replace it with at least 2200pF. With this mod the required max TRX power is 45 Watt for 40m.

    Very interested in this, thanks. I am exactly working on an even older FL2100b. I have it now HV fused, with meter protection and have run it no tubes up to 2400V. Tubes I cooked several hours but even at the low HV xfmr tap I blow the HV fuse. Q: how did you cook the tubes - (as per PA0FRI ?)- filament on and grid and plate to DC +ve and cathode to negative of the 0-60 VDC? Many thanks Peter, will watch your second part.

    • @dynoguy
      @dynoguy  7 лет назад

      Hi Peter, yes just the usual way as PA0FRI and others describe quite well,. The B-version came later, mine is an original FL-2100 (without B) and pretty much identical to my FL-2277 (no B as well). More on the tubes on your comment to part 2, 73 Mike

    I have a cygnet swan 260 single side band I just acquired, in testing I noticed when I transmit while listening to a shortwave radio, it's only transmitting on am, would those be caused by bad tubes or the bias adjustments on the back of unit, any info would be greatly appreciated as to where to start ?

    • @dynoguy
      @dynoguy  3 года назад

      Hi,.. i don't know anything about the Swan 260, but to start diagnosing, just hook it up to a dummy load and check with a scope what's actually coming out of the RF plug. If really nothing comes out on SSB, go further back in the circuit and you most likely will find the issue.

    thanks for your reply ! you can tell me where I can get a replacement, I have seen one on the internet but it is very expensive thanks luis

    • @dynoguy
      @dynoguy  5 лет назад

      Unfortunately i don't have by spares to give away. I am afraid, but you need to keep on searching the internet.
      You can take the rivets out and replace single contacts, but it's quite laborious and you still need a switch you can take apart, for parts.

    hello, I have a problem with band swich makes me a flashover in 20 meters, it is very difficult to remove the key to clean it ? 73 Luis LU4HK

    • @dynoguy
      @dynoguy  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Luis,...it takes a bit of time to dismantle it, but it's not impossible. If it was flashing it's most likely burned and you need a replacement wafer or at least the contact pads which are riveted. Also check why it flashed, most likely mismatch, oscillation or bad capacitors. If you don't fix the root cause, a new contact set will most likely flash again.....73, Mike

    Hi, Regarding the capacitor you are talking abount at 11:09 that starts cracking, Does this just happen through age? My FL2000b Just went bang and blew that RDA40 in half.

    • @dynoguy
      @dynoguy  2 года назад

      Yes, it's mostly age related, thermal and/or mechanical stress will certainly accelerate it. considering that most of these shack heaters are 40+ years old, i just take that as normal ear and tear.
      If you look around on ebay, you may find some for little money, particular from eastern European sellers.

    Hello what was the cause of the lower plate voltage around 1400v at first then had plate voltage of 2300v ??. I have a fl2100 that's only running at 1400v at plate.

    • @dynoguy
      @dynoguy  3 месяца назад

      The transformer has 2 output taps, also check your mains input taps, maybe wrong for your country.

      I think there are replacement boards around, but why don't you just replace all the components, makes it as good as new

      Replacing all the internals seems a great idea at some point maybe but for now I need the actual psu transformer new equivalent not any boards for now anyways hopefully ,, what is the new transformer you put in yours please ?

    • @dynoguy
      @dynoguy  2 года назад +1

      well, .. that's an easy one, plenty of transformer companies around, just ask for a quote with the data of the original one (you'll find some hints in the schematics). and they will make you one which is far better than the original. You might find second hand ones on fleabay, but people usually asking silly money for those and you still won't know how good (or bad) the insulation resistance of that 40 year old lump might be.
      Definitely a no-brainer for me, if i need one, i'll get it made., second hand vintage junk is a no-no for high voltage stuff.

    I am working on my ft2100b and finding high input SWR on 10m and 20m. After fiddling with the coil screw on 10m, I could get the swr down to 3:1. The ceramic caps on the 10m pi input measure correctly (out of circuit) and I have continuity all the way to the band switch. What could be the issue?

    • @dynoguy
      @dynoguy  Год назад

      Input return loss is always poor on these, especially on the higher bands as these are designed for the tube PA's of the transceivers of their days, with those you could tune it just fine, modern transceivers want to see 50 Ohm, full stop... Just add a resistor in parallel of the input, around 200 Om with reasonable power rating and things will look much better.
