Hey Nate what are your thoughts on RUclips live? I was thinking about streaming my workouts because I don’t have time to edit anymore but it seems like no one does that. Is that because no one has done it well enough to be popular or because it’s a bad idea? Thank you Nate!
In case anyone might appreciate a fun fact. Nate’s wife here. 👋🏻 Since we’re talking RUclips “Shorts”. Nate is 6’2” and I am 5’ even. Let’s just say he has always had a thing for shorts. 😉
Here's an upside: I publish my Shorts on Tiktok as well, where they get 10x or more views. To have a video monetised, Tiktok videos need to be over 60 seconds. For the last few Shorts I've been creating a long version for Tiktok and then trimming them down to 60 seconds for RUclips. I'm publishing a Tiktok tomorrow that's 1:17 long. Instead of editing it down, I'm now going to sit on it for two weeks and publish it on the 15th 🎉. No editing required! I'm excited. Thanks for the video, Nate!
My main concern is on the money earning side. Yes, RUclips Shorts don't make much money right now. But consider the format for monetization right now. Every four shorts on the shelf the viewer watches (or five or whatever the number is, I forget), an ad plays. The idea is, the watch time each short gets from that viewer is the percentage the channel gets of the revenue earned from that shorts view. Hence why the earnings on shorts can vary wildly. More watch time, more percentage of that ad money that is earned. Now suddenly there's going to be shorts that are minutes long. It's not like ad revenue will suddenly be more potent to accommodate the longer watch time potential. So that means that shorts that are 1 - 3 minutes long will earn a bit more (assuming they're able to keep viewers watching for their duration), while the rest of the shorts will earn far, FAR less than normal. So basically anybody still making 15 - 30 second shorts are going to see a nosedive in earnings once the 1 - 3 minute long shorts are more normalized. I might have my details wrong, but if I'm understanding the shorts monetization correctly, this is going to spell doom for anybody who earns any kind of living on shorts, myself included.
I've been a shorts channel only and it has paid off (180k subs). I've always hated cramming a ton of information in 60 seconds since I have to leave out a ton of key points. I've found that I need about 1:30 minutes to get it all in. So, this will be a breath of fresh air for me.
@@SageandStoneHomestead I’m averaging about $1500 per month with it climbing a little more each month. I made a post on my community post tab with a screen shot of my metrics.

I checked your channel before commenting and asking if it's worked for you. From what I saw, your "cargo shorts" are still showing as long form. Have you had any luck with them being treated as shorts?
This really does not change the game that much SHORTS have never been helpful towards watch time or ad revenue this update just expands a creators ability to take more time to make a SHORT that now does not have to be under 60 secs to benfit because SHORTS has always only been about views and getting more eyeballs on your content and thereby hopefully more subscribers...it is just EXPANDING the time you can use to make a SHORT and the revenue model (albeit onesided as always to benefit YT more than creators) will not change and those making horizontal content at whatever length will STILL not be considered a SHORT. I am still very small time but I have been using SHORTS since the beginning when it was a shiny new toy free-for-all and it has helped me grow in subscribers and if you are creative enough to steer a lot of those new eyeballs into your long-form content. Use SHORTS as a way to be more efficient and realize the potential--for example it may be annoying to some or counter-intuitive to some stubborn "creators" but take a normal video review shot in vertical form about 6-10 mins in length and you upload that...it is NOT a SHORT still and gets whatever traction it gets...then NOW you can not only cut that into multiple SHORTS (if you plan ahead) of the 5-10 sec variety, the 30-60 sec variety and anywhere in-between (as I already do) steering any eyeballs to that orginal piece of long content that may or may not help in every case but it does not hurt and truly uses the same video in multiple ways that is NOT viewed as the same by YT...remember with SHORTS it is about views not watch time (or how long a viewer even watches the video) and now with this new update you have even more shiny-new opportunity to cut that same review into other angles and SHORTS to possibly get even more views and eyeballs. Is that overduing it of course...is that saturating your subscriber base of course but in all this if your base is really into your content they will watch and at the end of the day use whatever YT gives you to the best of your advantage... 1 Reply
So let me get this straight... RUclips shorts came out, ruined tons of channels outside of channels that did shorts only, gave very little in the way of ad revenue and changed viewer behavior to the point where mindless scroll really became a problem, and the next step is to make those shorts longer.... so the attack on long form videos continues.
What is the point of editing longer and adding more effort for the same RPM? From experience, editing for hours and getting lower views isn't as rewarding as a 5 minute job to just cut a 5 second short and post. Makes absolutely no sense that the RPM doesn't go up after 1 minute long. If they can say 5-10x the RPM with 2-3 minute long shorts, then we are talking a different ballgame. That would be the absolute gamechanger. But from what I've read and what I'm seeing...nope - you'll get your 3 pennies per 1000 for a 3 minute short. Unbelievable
As shorts creator the only good I see with this update is when I need to add my CTA at the end. perhaps adding an extra 3 secs. That's about it. (if by chance I made a short so jammed packed it filled the 60 mark.) The 60 secs length on shorts was the bread and butter of "shorts" it's the reason behind it's success. I think that most that watch and like shorts (myself included) like the fact that the topic will "get to the point" and change to the next short within 60 seconds. That's some of the entertainment in itself. So longer ones, except for creators that try to "cram" their best inside that 60 seconds which makes the extra time good for them, it will be interesting to see the retention outcome of this in the next few months of analytics.
Answering the question for the 1:22 mark. I think it's because RUclips has a publishing agreement. Which states if it's a song used past 60 seconds it would be considered a music stream. Wich they would have to pay more for. I found this out because one of the people that work at TikTok provided that information. Also this is why anybody that uses music past 60 seconds it automatically gets muted on tiktok FYI.
@deleyton shorts tend to get more traffic so normally I'll make a short about a history topic or event and tag in a long form video to push the traffic to that, with the 3 min "long shorts" that means I can have more of a decent short for the pushing
At first I was not so much happy with this update and thought it unnecessary as we have shorts and then long format videos but now one thing, I will definitely say is that it will be helpful for channels who are based on youtube shorts.
I've just started posting shorts and I am finding the 1 minute limit a real challenge and I really like the restriction on length. I think the short shorts are a really valuable exercise.
Thanks for sharing. If the watching hours from these new 3-mins shorts still won't be counted to public watching hours, then there is no point to waste my time on it!
We had a pretty good conversation about this in a group chat we have with some other creators yesterday, and I am cautiously optimistic with this. We talked about a lot of the same things you touched on, especially with early adoption! To me, this is just another tool in the toolbox that RUclips offers and it's something we should at least test and experiment with especially in the early days.
Possibly the reason you can't use copyrighted music on upcoming longer shorts is that the music licensing agreements need to be updated accordingly. Just my guess anyway that in time they will update this but it may be tricky as many top 100 songs these days are around 3 minutes which means you're using an artist's nearly whole song, not just a long clip from it.
Yes Nate, I can see that story telling will be the key here. The retention or should I say the attention span of the viewer will determine the success of a “Tall Short”. Most Shorts viewers have that itchy trigger finger hovering ready to swipe. Great vid as usual. Keep em comin. 👍❤️🙏
Interesting news - so from our perspective here......when we record 'shorts' with our Guinea Pigs, they sometimes do all the cute stuff as the ONE minute is nearly up.......now I can go beyond that and have another couple of minutes to do these 'tall Shorts'. We've used Shorts as a means of getting many Subscribers to our Channel - 7,303 total Subscribers as at now - some of those are due to Long Videos and Livestreams - but having 3 minute 'tall Shorts' is almost a middle ground to getting regular Shorts viewers to watch Long Videos / Livestreams. The 3 minute 'tall Shorts' appear to be like a middle point or a stepping stone from the present Shorts to Long Videos. I think we'll do a few 2:50's Tall Shorts all ready to roll out on the 15th Oct. Thank you for the update Nate - this'll be fascinating to see how things go with this new Shorts format. There will be winners and losers in all of this - hopefully creators can adapt in a positive way.
My guess would be that theoreticaly someone could upload an entire copyrighted song as a RUclips Short and profit off of it, whereas that is much less likely when the Short can only be 60 seconds
I'm still working on my first few videos, but I think these Tall Shorts could be a huge boon to my future channel. My channel is based on my small business; where I repair, clean, and maintain stuffed toys. Generally, this kind of content falls underneath the crafting side of RUclips. My long form content I intend to narrate my processes, talk about the client and the plushie, maybe insert occasional meme things, bloopers and the like. Some good, light, classic editing where I can shine my personality. I have learned, however, there are 2 sides to crafting RUclips: 'Personality' channels and 'ASMR' channels. Now, ASMR doesn't strictly mean ASMR. These could be content where there are subtitles and soft music playing throughout, with maybe the occasional sound effect. Both channel types are popular in their own rights, but ASMR channels tend to succeed with shorter video times. So, I'll be leveraging these new Tall Shorts to make condensed, ASMR style versions of my longform videos. These will premiere a week after the long videos launch. And thanks to RUclips's other shorts feature, I can link back to the long form, Personality style version.
The reason for the 60 sec - and + rule according to my experience is so people don’t dont use copyright music as a background they don’t mind a trend dance etc. but using it as background could affect artists as how there music is perceived.
Nate, thank you for drawing attention to the new YT Short/Longer 3 minute videos starting October 15! A good portion of my long form videos are under 3 minutes. This will require some experimentation for sure! Cheers👍👍
I Make more shorts and well I will certainly try these out. I really like the idea that they can be horizontal or vertical. This is good news. Thanks Nate
Floods! You’re thinking of flood pants, but long pants that aren’t actually shorts (above the knee) but stop above the ankle wear many names: besides floods and highwaters, you’ll find capri, three-quarter pants, pedal pushers, clam diggers, jams, or culottes. The styles are different but the hem length are well above ankle yet several inches below knee. Have fun with that. So these stories…do they need to complete within the 3 minutes, or can they continue on in the following 3 minutes?
It is always wonderful to see you in your enthusiasm. Thanks for this heads up... I usually do one short a day... I have four days to get a jump start!!!
My concerns with these tall shorts is keeping the viewers attention that long. People that watch shorts have a very small attention span. Hard to keep them interested for even 30 seconds. You’re gonna need one hell of a good story to keep them interested for 3 minutes. One thing that might work well in tall shorts are how to videos. Some of this need just a little longer to show you how to setup or configure something. I could see that working well for a video editing how to. For example.
I am interested to see how this will play out in the kids channel realm. It is hard to create kids content in under 1 min but I have been fairly successful so far. I am looking forward to the 3 min shorts and being able to tell longer stories 😊
You are always helpful, man. Thank you. I can see this being beneficial for me, BUT I have the same question that dude in the comments had - if I'm gonna make a "short" video, why wouldn't I just do it was a regular video rather than a "tall short"?
The storytelling is what we aim for on our channel. It’s not that we tell stories but we write a story and (usually short but have a couple “longer” which would now be placed under the “tall shorts….lengthy shorts…..vertical shorts” 🤔 😂) ok I digress……we like to put content together that tells a story and our animals are the main characters. 😄
I am so pumped about this update. I have to clip a bunch of narration and slow motions and whatnot out of my Fortnite clips to adhere to the under 1m rule. Usually I need 1m15s or more! Thanks for the update Nate.
Random thought: doesn’t RUclips pay the music creators for allowing their music on shorts? If they aren’t paying them for tall shorts now the creators will make a higher rpm
Hey Nate! Well, let me give my perspective on this as somebody that creates content for both RUclips and TikTok. One of the main reasons why I have not come over to RUclips shorts is because of the lack of support for three minute long videos. A lot of times the kind of content that I produced I can edit together and I can often get my point across in a minute and 30 seconds or maybe even two minutes, but 60 seconds does not offer a lot of time without uploading a whole bunch of shorts or having to cut out a lot of really important information in order to meet at 60 second threshold so what I had been doing is recording longform vertical content for TikTok and trying to clip some of that to put onto RUclips shorts but I mostly stay away from shorts because of the lack of that support. So moving forward, it will be a lot easier for me to invest all of my time into just the RUclips platform Rather than having to split my attention between two different channels and hoping I’ll get some bleed over from my TikTok into my RUclips channel. If you have any other questions, let me know.
i've been waiting for this. having to post shorts as regular videos isn't all that annoying, but ik my reach could be better if it was in the shorts algorithm and not the regular one. excited!!
Thanks for the insights, Nate, found them pretty helpful. Quick question here, can I post the same content both as a short form and a long form by just altering the formats? Thanks.
The shorts you were talking about are called Capris. Thoughts about 3 minute shorts: Didn’t instagram just allow for three minute reels? My impression is RUclips keeps imitating insta. I am kind of torn to try these 3 minute things. I tried shorts on my channel and it seemed to have a negative impact. So I only posted long form videos (mostly vlogs) and converted them to verticals, trimmed down to less than a minute for instagram reels. I might give it another try, but I am curious how this will resonate with viewers in general. Will it be in the same shelf as short shorts (let’s call them hot pants from now on!)? People will probably not know this is longer content and swipe away as quickly as always. By the way, thanks for the great content, I learned a lot.
Yes, great ponders about storytelling. I see Jenny Hoyas creating binge-worthy shorts with a similar formula because she's a fun storyteller. Definitely need to think this through for this niche.
I agree about there being an early adopter benefit. I’ve experienced that inadvertently in the past with other experiments. Gives you false sense of accomplishment. Then you later realize it was just RUclips pushing stuff out artificially. I think with tall shorts it’s just to combat the tik tok requirement of videos being longer in order to get monetize. Now we will get more than ever people cross posting their crap from TikTok
1:08 I think I understand why. I've been using copyrighted material on RUclips for forever and it used to be that RUclips didn't even mark the copyrighted music or wasn't able to detect it if it was like a length like 30 seconds or less and there's all sorts of fair use general guidelines and policies and probably it has to do with that to some degree.
Hi Nate, this may seem a silly question but here goes - does it matter if the square ratio is filmed horizontally or vertically? I record my videos on my iphone mostly using images. I make the images square but then I have the option of recording the square either horizontally or vertically. Does it matter or is it just the fact that it's a square that counts?
This might be a good opportunity to call attention to product reviews that I have already done. 60 seconds isn't very long to do a box opening, explanation and/or show how to use. My only issue is, and it is a personal one, I am doing a little experiment on video uploads on a product review channel.
I'm calling these "jams". That's what we called knee-length shorts back in the 80's and 90's. Also, I don't think you asked us to boop the like button in this video.
The early adopter benefit is intriguing BUUUUT.. would you A) recommend preproducing 3 minutes shorts and publish when the feature is good and ready or B) upload now and live with the horrible performance in the hope that it gets picked up later? Greez
So I just uploaded a longer short, literally, 1:03 min. lol, However, it is not in the Shorts category, it is listed in my Videos. I haven't set it to go live, since I'm trying to find out why it didn't go to the shorts category first. Any suggestions?
The restriction on copyright music over 60 seconds is because of copyright law. Generally using copyrighted music over 60 seconds isn't protected under fair use.
This should be interesting. I have a bit of an experiment in mind that might fit this new format - or not. That’s sort of implied in the term experiment I guess. Anyhow - I’m going to prep for this and see what happens! Oh - I think we used to call the high-pants “floods”
I propose a game: take a drink (or eat a s’more) every time I say "RUclips Shorts" or "Tall Shorts" during this video 😂
Excited for next week's vid!

Thanks for sharing. If the watching hours from these new 3-mins shorts still won't be counted to public watching hours, then there is no point to waste my time on it!
I do daily devotional’s and can do up to 3 minutes easy for these so I’m going to give the pants a try! Thank you for the thorough video Nate! 🙏🏻❤️
3:35 YES PLEASE NEED THIS
Possibly the reason you can't use copyrighted music on upcoming longer shorts is that the music licensing agreements need to be updated accordingly.
2027: RUclips introduces Pajamas.
(Coincidentally it’s pajama day at my school 😂)
The reason for the 60 sec - and + rule according to my experience is so people don’t dont use copyright music as a background they don’t mind a trend dance etc. but using it as background could affect artists as how there music is perceived.
Nate, thank you for drawing attention to the new YT Short/Longer 3 minute videos starting October 15! A good portion of my long form videos are under 3 minutes. This will require some experimentation for sure! Cheers👍👍
Great and timely video Nate! I have taken a little break from RUclips, this looks like an opportune time for me to jump back in making Long Shorts!
I Make more shorts and well I will certainly try these out. I really like the idea that they can be horizontal or vertical. This is good news. Thanks Nate
This def helps for our podcast clips we want to post in vertical format as shorts. Many were just over the old threshold.
New Nate video? Yes please! You could call them Capri pants 😅
Love your content. Thanks for keeping us educated. I’m a new channel thinking of starting shorts so the timing is perfect! ❤
Yes, please make the video breaking down video length responses👍🏻
The storytelling is what we aim for on our channel. It’s not that we tell stories but we write a story and (usually short but have a couple “longer” which would now be placed under the “tall shorts….lengthy shorts…..vertical shorts” 🤔 😂) ok I digress……we like to put content together that tells a story and our animals are the main characters. 😄
Yes, Nate. Please make that video! Thank you.
All ads are shared with others Shorts during that watch section.
Normal videos get pre play ads, sometimes mid roll ads and end.
So..if this was Starbucks, a Short .just became VENTI ? ☕
The Tall Shorts are coming in right in time for me, I just recorded two of Gingersnap's cat videos where she was cute longer than I had planned
Very helpful as a new RUclipsr thanks! I’m all for calling them “high waters” 🤣literally lol at that throwback reference 😂
Thanks for the update, Nate!
I'm hoping to make a splash in the storyteller category-this helped my plans a lot.
i've been waiting for this. having to post shorts as regular videos isn't all that annoying, but ik my reach could be better if it was in the shorts algorithm and not the regular one. excited!!
Yes please create a video about deciding the length of videos 😊
The 60-second limit for RUclips Shorts with copyrighted material probably exists to protect a Fair Use defense, if legally challenged.
I hear ya brother! Lets give it a try ,))
Great news! I couldn't upload my Reels to RUclips because of that old-fashioned 60 sec limit. In 10 days, I'll be able to.
Love the content idea of optimal length of video for partner program!
Yes! I would appreciate a video on the lengths
Interesting video. As always, my favorite RUclips tutorial channel!
Wow!! Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend, 780 likes
Thanks for the insights, Nate, found them pretty helpful. Quick question here, can I post the same content both as a short form and a long form by just altering the formats? Thanks.
It's about time.
Thanks for the info Nate.
Great updates as usual and interesting about the music changes too - curious as well.
Also curious about how it works for watch time for those long shorts - Capris if you will.
Yes, great ponders about storytelling. I see Jenny Hoyas creating binge-worthy shorts with a similar formula because she's a fun storyteller. Definitely need to think this through for this niche.
Interesting, life evolves. thanks Nate, Stay safe have fun, enjoy life! 👌🍻👍
Great video Nate. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts 👍🏻
I agree! I’m glad Nate talked about this
It’s the man himself! Good to hear
Thanks a bunch, looking to grow my channel so will try this as soon as it hits on the 15th 😎
Epic videos on this you certainly need to make @Nate
PLEASE do the video length behavior analysis!
Thanks, Nate!
I am surprised you didn’t say this was most wanted by creators. It was in the paragraph you showed.
This is great for music artists!
3:35 yes! Please make that video.
This might be a good opportunity to call attention to product reviews that I have already done. 60 seconds isn't very long to do a box opening, explanation and/or show how to use. My only issue is, and it is a personal one, I am doing a little experiment on video uploads on a product review channel.
Not just tall shorts, the paragraphs you showed also included square format ..
Hmm I need to look into this.
Definitely going to be trying these tall shorts for my 3 min content for a bit lol
I'm calling these "jams". That's what we called knee-length shorts back in the 80's and 90's.
Also, I don't think you asked us to boop the like button in this video.
I also use shorts to bring snippets from my podcast to a wider public in bite size pieces that may interest them
The early adopter benefit is intriguing BUUUUT.. would you A) recommend preproducing 3 minutes shorts and publish when the feature is good and ready or B) upload now and live with the horrible performance in the hope that it gets picked up later? Greez
You are a genius, probably you know that already but yeah - you are. Cheers
Nice one Nate!
Call them 3/4 Shorts/Content because there are long sleeves, short sleeves, and 3/4 sleeves.
