Hello, I went there last year on vacation, made a tour of the Macorix House of Ron, the Gran Reserva and the Rebel were good.
The land of my ancestors
Love rum thanks for reaching me something
Excellent video, most Dominicans prefer Brugal for their day-to-day drink, usually Extra Viejo or Leyenda. Barcelo is more export oriented.
12yr Bacoo is very tasty for under $30
Thanks a lot Steve, that was very informative👌
Really like this series, im learning so much😁
I love Dominican Rum! Barcelo and Brugal are some of my favorites. So interesting about the difference between fermenting cane juice vs molasses. Back in 2018 I toured the Brugal bottling plant in San Felipe near Puerto Plata. During the tour I asked the guide in the tasting room if the sugar cane is grown in the area or toward the south coast of DR. I told him I do Rum reviews on RUclips and looked forward to reviewing the XV. He replied they get a lot of the raw sugar cane from Nicaragua as it less expensive to import it than grow it there in DR! Maybe the economics have changed since my visit there Steve? Additionally, Bacoo Rum is grown, produced and bottled at a location approximately 40 miles due east of Santa Domingo. They aren't affiliated with Brugal. They also claim to be the most environmentally friendly distillery in the world. Don't know, never been to that part of DR. Google Earth shows an impressive operation that is a distillery.
Really loving this series, I learn something new each video. Never seen Brugal rum here in Australia and thought it was a European brand using imported rum. Now I know where it is really from.
I think Bacoo is only one i could find when i googled Yazoo. i know of them but not sure if they are a brand in themselves or what, interesting i tried the matusalem or one of theirs recently quite nice.
Hi Steve, just found your chanel recently. Great videos, recipes and reviews. I really admire your passion and appreciate a lot the knowledge you share. The beauty about rum resides in its long history, diversity and I think the fact that there are minimal, not to say any rules at all, makes it even more captivating and fun.
Btw, I recommend you and the community the documentary "¿Cómo se produce Ron Barceló?" (I believe auto-subtitles are available)
Cool tip: Dominican Rum and Dominican Bachata, great combination!
Cheers!
Dear Steve, great educational video as always! I wasn't that much interested in Dominican Rep rums before but since your review of Barcelo Imperial I'm looking to try it.
By the way, which column still rums do you consider medium or heavy bodied, because I'm not sure if I could name any?
What are the other brands? I'm sipping on a Bacoo 12 year (absolutely delicious) and it says it's from the Dominican Republic.
Great info Steve. Matusalem is an interesting brand here in the US (a little hard to find). Since Matusalem has a Cuban heritage and tries to position itself as a "legal" Cuban rum in the US, how does its taste profile compare to Cuban rums like Cubay, Santiago de Cuba, Havana Club?
Keyboard warrior here... Matusalem has a distillery in Monte Plata, Dominican Republic since 2015. So it is likely that that younger Matusalem you presented is indeed distilled in the Dominican Republic, though of course it will take some time for all of their products to be able claim that. And as for where they get their sugar cane, I don't know :) .
hmmmm, interesting. Are you 100% its a Distillery? I'll be honest, I don't know for 100%. as i said, my knowledge has come via reading. But, it's pretty well known...or at least I thought it was that Matusalem is purely Blending. So they may have premises...but as far as i'm aware, they don't distill...only Blend. But i'll go away and research deeper. FOr example... Pussers has a premises on the BVIs...but they don't distill. Only Blend imported Guyana Rum together.
@@StevetheBarmanUK My source for this is 101 Rums to Try Before you Die (2018) with further detail coming from Wikipedia. Ian Buxton gives the impression in a very short review of Matusalem 15/23 that he's seen it.
Edited to add that all of these sources use the word 'produce', not distill, so it's possible that they are only blending other rums, and that yes it might be a blending facility. This has added weight as an idea given the fact that other Cuban rums like Havana Club are blends from multiple distilleries.
@@gavincassells7585 yeah... I'll look more over the weekend, but I'm 99% sure I'm correct. (never 100% sure until i know... but I'm normally bang on due to research before saying something...unless I confess I don't know 😂. I've learned not to make statements unless I know I'm 100% factual) But, It's always been pretty much a thing that Matusalem merely Blends. I know the Monte Plata facility is just Bottling and Ageing. As far as I'm aware, that's 100% factual. As i say, as far as I'm aware, they import Light Rum... maybe even from other distillers in DR, although the term "import" implies more likely Puerto Rico as that's where it was made until the early 1990s (after they left Cuba). Anyway, they "import light rum" then Age, Blend and Bottle it. They had a 7-8 year Hiatus after leaving Puerto Rico, before restarting the Brand in DR in the early 2000s.
