- Telescopes should work well but the best of them look great too! This scope, made around 1981 or 82, is one of my favourites and its performance does not disappoint. Orange tube C5 - glory of the 80s!
1982? Sweet! It does look cool.
Chuck's Astrophotography It does look good. I checked the CN C5 registry and the serial puts it in 81 or 82, the motors a few months earlier. It’s built like a Saturn V!
There's no school like old school. Awesome scope from the best decade ever.
I just dropped the hammer on an 83’ c90 orange tube. Keep the cool old tech coming.
Cute little scope
Wow these things were really built SOLID back then.
Yes it's like a tank!
What an awesome looking scope! Great overview :)
That looks in lovely condition both mechanically and optically for it's age. Fantastic find, Jenham!
That thing is beautiful. I really love the orange and still works as good as the new ones
Congratulations on your purchase it's a beautiful premium quality telescope built like tank when they were manufactured by Celestron at their factory in California.
I love the signatures orange tube and everything was oversized like the setting circles and slow motion controls.
I own a Celestron Super C8+ with the black ota and Byers worm gear drive with outstanding optics.
I know you will enjoy yours as much as I still enjoy mine.
Clear Skies.
Nice find. A few months ago I purchased orange tube C5 (without the finder), the view of the moon is surreal beautifully contrasty. Would be awesome if you could post some Planetary videos. 👍🏻
I'll try to do more videos with the scope, but at the moment the early start and low elevations aren't ideal for me. Clear skies.
Good review as always Graham!! Just shows that telescopes will last a life time, if they are cared for. You got yourself a real gem of a scope plus a classic too!!
I hit the like button as always!! I am so shocked that someone disliked this video really??? Don't worry mate I get it all the time too!! You keep up the good work, never let the haters drag you down!!
Keep looking up and I wish you stay safe and clear skies!!!
Thanks Martin!
Nice find Graham! I have a C8 that I use for lunar imaging.
Please more videos of vintage telescopes.... thanks.
I’ve got another one planned!
@@JenhamsAstro Awasome!!!
Nice one 👍it still looks brand new considering it's age 🔭
Hello J. Enjoyed the vid. I have an 81 C5 telephoto lens. Black with gold stripe. I have a question about focus? If the scope is focused for moon wou
C5 Celestron telescope has an impressive antique design on it's mount.. I definitely would've bought it as well.. Now that I think of it, a bit of a Steel Punk Design. Thank you for sharing. 🔭
It's a great little machine!
It's a great little machine!
Great find. Still sharp. Back when things were made in Japan rather than China. I love this kinds of videos. I have an old Edmunds Astroscan I need to get resurfaced.
Im ready to find one of those!
Nice find graham.enjoy.im watching this with a professionals ci5 tee shirt on.get the retro thing.takes us back to our childhood 👏
I’d move if the pigeons were that big 😉👍🏻
Fantastic! I always loved the C5. May i know how much was it auctioned for? Thank you
£140 plus postage and package
very nice scope and mount.. it was built to last as long as the stars themselves... great video cheers
Thanks 👍
Sorry accidentally hit send. If focused on moon would you have to change focus for plane spotting I.e. Airliner at 40,000 feet?
Question I can buy a complete set with the suitcase and booklets. Not gonna lie I am in love..but is it suitable to put it on a GoTO Eq5 mount with digital camera for AP of the planets. I used a refelctor for this work but I am getting tired of the collumation.
Hello Arie, I bought my old C5 partly for sentimental reasons as i too love how it looks and the way it's put together. So far I haven't done much AP with it and if i wanted to then yes I'd de-fork it, buy some tube rings and put it on my HEQ5. But realistically my Mak 127 will give better results on the planets, and should hardly if ever need collimation (whereas the SCT will need more than the Mak, but less than a Newtonian). So I'd say you need to decide on your end goal and how many scopes you might end up with at that point. I've got quite a few, and the C5 stays on it's fork and provides sharp visual views. For planets, a Mak and an astro video camera is the way to go. Hope this helps, Graham
@@JenhamsAstro I'm in the process of starting an public oberservation with the instute of wheater and nature. I live on the Island Vlieland where we have no polution of light. For the public observation we are looking for a C11 or something simular.
Maybe for my personal use a C8.
I alwrwady use a ZWO Asi 120. I also have an old Nikon camera.
@@ArieVisker That sounds like an amazing plan. The SCTs will work well for outreach. I wish you clear skies!
I remember those years ago. They were always pricey. I was hoping to pick one up in a thrift store but that has yet to happen.
Just wondering, did you get a tripod with it ? It should screw thru the bottom. Back then I was going to get that but bought a B&L 4 inch CAT, big mistake.
Enjoy it !
Hi Alan, unfortunately the scope didn't come with tripod or wedge, so I am on the lookout for them. Shame about the B&L CATs, i was tracking a Criterion 8 on eBay just to see how bad they really were, but i was outbid. Probably it was for the best! Clear skies, Graham
I noticed a number plate, were all celestrons individually numbered?
Yes, if you look on Cloudy Nights you can find links to C5 and C8 registries, where a list shows you the S/N, motor date, mirror number etc. The system of numbering has evolved along the way so you need to read the explanation to decode the number on a given scope. It's quite a good thread of owners and their info/photos.
Great scope Graham! How does it compare against a modern orange Celestron C6 ?
Thanks Mike, based on a sample of one of each, I prefer the C5. My C6 (now gone) was only OK, and not quite as sharp as the old C5. In theory though the coatings on a new scope should give a better view, but for me it was not the case. Ask 10 people, get 11 opinions! Clear skies.
@@JenhamsAstro Thank you. So the better choice is the Celestron C8 ?
Mike Mopar yes, the light gathering of the C8 is worth having if you’ve got a mount for it.
@@JenhamsAstro I have 2 Vixen mounts and an EQ5 , also the C8. So it makes no sense for a beginner to buy a Celestron C6, I think.
Mike Mopar I agree.
