What I really love about this video is that you show the complete process of you achieving a product. Along with all the mistakes and things you learned. That is what fascinates me about making things - the process. You start with a plan, gather materials, fail, reiterate, build, fail, plan again, gather different materials, fail, start over, contemplate your decisions in life, and in the end you have a product you can be proud of! Love it! Love your videos!
Haha! That contemplating decisions in life is a crucial step. "why did we think we could make so many dang coasters?!?" Thank you! We always love sharing the full process, and it's often a windy one!
Yes, very nice video! I watched several others with no talking at all, and no product list. In the end, the video wasn't helpful. This video has it all - well done.
Yep that was us doing the serving tray, and yes we have done resin coasters in this video! It was our first resin project ruclips.net/video/tdDFDm4UDok/видео.html
Something I’ve found helpful when casting concrete in molds like this is to put them on a wobbly table and attach vibrating back massagers to the table, it helps get the bubbles out and you can just fill and forget until dry.
UGH. This project is tough to watch, as it brings back all of my failures in trying to cast my Thwomp. I felt for you guys along the way, but the end result is great! Silicone is an easy material when it's easy. :P
I very clearly remember watching this video six years ago. This was the first video of yours I had seen. You guys have been my feel good no stress favorite channel for so, so long. I remember being so impressed that you were selling products that you were making together at freaking West Elm. What a dream you were already living and look how far you guys have come! 🥰 Your success is greatly earned. Life changes a lot in six years and now my toddler loves you guys. Especially the pumpkins. He’s so excited for Halloween. You guys are such an inspiration you have no idea. His amazing Halloween costumes are in large part due to you teaching me that failure is okay. You were the first people in my life to show me that you can learn from your failures. Thank you! I became an engineer and mother in the last six years. My two biggest goals since childhood. ❤ I was 29 six years ago and I had given up on those goals. PS: Have you ever considered that you started forgetting mold release immediately after you inhaled it? Good thing you upped your safety measures. 😂
You guys are the cutest it makes my guts hurt lol. You guys also sound busy a.f and it makes me respect you on a whole different level. Thanks for all the inspiration and cute, but most importantly educational, videos. I just came out of surgery and I'm stuck indoors most of the time now was looking for a side hustle. I think I can make some quickcrete-something with confidence, with all the tips I learned. Sorry for rambling! Love y'all all the way from The Boogie Down Bronx!
Hope the hurt guts isn't what landed you in surgery! Also hope your recovery is as easy breezy as surgery recover can be. Quikrete is definitely a good product to start doing side hustle stuff with! Things that will also help in the future. Use a transfer cup wgen mixing your silicone. And keep the transfer cup around so you can check the silicone in the transfer cup to see if it's cured before disturbing your mold. Sadly platinum silicone is very finicky (but still great for its own purpose) Also silicone doesnt cure when contaminated with LATEX as well. So dont hard coat master molds with latex! A nice epoxy hard coat will do just fine. Also, silicone cures faster with humidity. So keep a humidifier close to the silicone. And i advise using purified nursery water in the humidifier to ensure nothing will contaminate the silicone through humidity. Youll be surprised how quickly your silicone sets. **for mold repair** So not buy silpoxy to repair molds. Its a waste of money. Its basically the GE brand silicone1 caulking you pick up at home depot. But its two part and costs 50$ instead of 5$. The cheap silicone patch work i did on a complex platinum silicone matrix mold survived 10 more castings. If you have any questions about epoxy and polyester resins (for casting, lamination. Auto body filler a.k a. Bondo, syntactic dough a.k.a. free form air, epoxy clay), Clays (monster clay, chavant, WED and waterclay) and silicones (tin or platinum for molding, casting, painting, and sculpting out of silicone) It is my full time job to handle and understand these products and make quality products that last. I love your guys' channel and would be so happy to help!
Such a cool process! It's awesome that you showed how the silicone has held up over time with a ton of use! Plus if something DOES happen to the molds, you have a clean master to make more!
Me: They actual remembered the mold release in a timely fashion? Katelyn: *sprays mold release* *beings coughing* Croaks out "wear a mask". Me: Ah...there we go. The goofballs we love. The human decency that emanates from E&K is so uplifting.
Started watching your channel. Great instructional videos. The best part of every one of them is watching how happy you 2 seem to be. Thank you for teaching me so many things and making me smile.
Concrete tips if you’re interested. Measure your ingredients with a scale including your water. This will give you greater consistency and cut waist down to near zero as you get it dialled in. Use a mechanical mixer. A drill would be better but a countertop kitchen mixer would be the best. When your mud looks mixed it’s really not. If you put it into a mixer and let it run for 10 - 15 minutes straight the water will be evenly distributed throughout. Some commercial ready mix companies plot longer drives to the job to allow for the correct mix time. Try the same “painting” method with your concrete. Mix a small amount of a face coat wetter (use a plasticizer) with less coarse aggregate (sift dry mix) and paint it on. As soon as it gets tacky dump the rest in.
Do you guys sell your molds? I was just thinking how cool it would be to make my own coasters, but I can't afford and do not have an X carve, or a 3D printer. I got curious and looked up your guys' tools. Needless to say, I am jealous. Heavily jealous.
Haha, I saw this earlier on Instagram and did not realize what I thought were the coasters were the molds! I like your process and am glad you were able to continually improve your product!
this reminds me of when a friend was trying to make a bunch of gems for steven universe cosplayers. she made the gem plates out of resin but they were too thick. she thought if she angled the facets that it could start to cure as she poured in more. she had to abandon the part of putting led's behind them. and just 3D printed them. but she had to do twice as much work sanding them to get rid of the lines. I wonder how much primer and a different mold would have helped her out.
Maybe a vibration plate would be a good idea? Or adding a vibration unit to your workbench so you just throw a switch and everything goes crazy; crazy smooth that is :D
Wow those compatibility issues made the job a real journey. I am so behind on material knowledge and it's great to ha e so much new stuff to be amazed by. Thankyou! Happy happy.
Really cool you were able to source ideas from people on IG. Interesting that it was pretty much just lacking the primer to work properly. And I’m sure you sighed some sighs of relief when the mold still works!
Love the music and you guys are my new favorite channel! Very inspiring, I found you guys today right when I was about to give up and quit trying to build my business, thanks
I know it is and older video and I dunno even know if you still make them but have you tried a pressure pot (or diy pressure pot *hint video hint*) to degass the silicone for no air pockets or bubbles before you pour the silicone in the mold?
You can buy a small vibrator motor from mac master and attach it to a small platform and you can use it as a sort of "debubbling" station when you pour each one instead of tapping it. Or make a vaccum chamber.
Just discovered you guys after finding you in my recommendations and definitely subscribing! Anyone know how I can buy their coasters? After seeing this video, I'd love a set
So glad you found us! Thank you for subscribing!! We used to sell the coasters on Etsy but right now we only sell them to West Elms in Texas. Every now and then we'll do a limited Etsy run though 😁👍
I found your site while looking for information regarding epoxy resin. I would never cast cement. I just watched it because it is wonderful to see how much in love the two of you are!
Oooo. Silicone pours.... I love that you include your learning processes. One of these days I'd love to play around with some silicone molds and I'm learning all of the things not to do! Great video! And now to head over to the After Show! Which is always so much fun!
Haha I feel like we mess something new up every time we use silicone but dang it's satisfying to pour! You should definitely give it a shot - gotta start sometime! Just.. start with oomoo 30 instead of mold star 15 👍😁
If you switch to Rapid Set concrete (in the red bags) you can put the dry concrete in the molds, tap or vibrate for settling, then spray a light mist over the powder until saturated. Should set fairly quickly without having to deal with pre-mixing wet concrete and trying to get the air bubbles out. (and clean-up should be easier. Only thing you'll have to figure out is how long to mist it for the moisture to get all the way through.
Would love to buy some of these. Love you guys and thanks for showing us the process. So cool to watch. Heard about you two on the Making It podcast and had to check y'all out! ♡
The Siedler-pieces have basically your coasters as the base, so the idea is not as far fetched; unless you start counting the miniatures going on top, but still ;)
When applying spray primer - use a small brush to work the primer into spots that are hard to hit, and move around the excess into the thinner areas. The resulting smooth surface should help with your molds. Thanks!
Great Video!!!! Don't let anybody tell you it was to long, that's what the pause button is for. All I can add is when you mix, whether it's silicone or resin, use a third container for the final mix.
Thank you!! Glad you didn't think it was too long. Thank you for the tip about the third container! Is that so you leave a similar amount of both parts behind in their original buckets instead of just leaving behind a little bit of one part in its bucket?
Yes! If your against using a third container, don't scrap the side of the container when your pouring into the mold. It is a common habit. People usually don't start with enough product (cost), and then scrape the sides of the container to get every last drop, and this is where the unmixed product hangs out and ends up in the mold.
This is great! I’ve heard palm sanders without the sandpaper work really well for degassing concrete. I’d really love to see a video on how to make a DIY vibrating table. Probably would make your lives easier since you’re casting so many coasters! I need to make one to agitate plaster molds I’ll be casting in silicone master molds, just like you’re doing!
Yes we used a sander without paper here (you just couldn't really see it because Evan was standing in front). Definitely considering doing a vibrating table - though honestly getting the bubbles out has never been a huge issue for us!
If you guys are going to be making lots of silicone molds you may want to look into vacuum chambers to make your molds void free. They are not to expensive. Fun to watch! Great job!
Awesome tutorial (As usual)!! I do a lot of mold making and casting at work. We use a lot of 2 part urethane and silicone. We found the best way to handle the compounds (especially when the mix ratio is by volume) is with large plastic syringes. You can find large packs of them on Amazon or Ebay for next to nothing. Use a separate syringe for part A and Part B, Stick the nozzle in and pull back the plunger to fill. Really cuts down on the spillage, and increases ratio accuracy. If your mixing by weight just use the syringes to transfer into a cup on a scale.
@@EvanAndKatelyn Most of the time we're potting connectors or cable splices which doesn't require a huge batch size. We use different sizes depending on the application and the mix ratio. The largest we use is around 200 mL for part A and B, to make a 400 mL batch total if it's a 50:50 mix.
Suggestion: Use a quarter sheet sander to vibrate your molds. Place a number of molds on a small piece of plywood. Fill molds with grout. Vibrate the wood sheet by placing the sander on the edge of the wood for 10-15 seconds. Oh, yeah . . . . Do this on your *next* project.
Okay I was just going back to your old videos and I just want to point out how much y'all changed. These older videos and your more current ones are 10/10. They are just a little bit different. Finger lickin' good.
Someone may have already said this, but one of the good things about priming / clear coating your master is that you can give it a matte / satin / gloss finish depending on what you use, and that finish should transfer to your mold and what you cast in it. Also, if your master's porous it can help stop silicone getting stuck in the pores. You can also get primer that's safe to use on polystyrene which is helpful if your master's made out of something that's prone to dissolve with standard primer.
I'm not sure how different it'd come out in concrete, but for resin it's good. I did a project where I had to cast candy, and the silicone molds and resin casts kept the different finishes of the different candies. It's pretty amazing the detail that you can get. Thinking of it though, in buildings you quite often see concrete that's been moulded in plywood boxing and it's taken on the grain pattern of the wood, so concrete may well gloss up if your original master has a gloss finish.
Suggestions if you haven't already bought them.... A drill bit mixer. And a vibrator.... for the bubbles! If you are trying to get the bubbles out of the concrete, you will need the mix to be a bit more moist/runny/higher viscosity for the visual areas or to work faster... You can also try different water tempetures.
Thanks! We've used a sander to vibrate out the bubbles before and that worked pretty well. Never experimented with different water temperatures, that's really interesting!
@@EvanAndKatelyn going colder with water should give you more working time. Which should result in a longer period of higher viscosity to vibrate out the bubbles. It won't impact strength (nor crack) unless you are curing in a below freezing environment.
They are all business in just one video, actually very smart. 🤔 - Earned from orders - Earned from sponsors - Earned from this video - Earned from aftershow - Earned from pateron - Earned from t-shirt
Great video! Wonderful to see how the power of the Maker community came to the rescue. Thanks for sharing the trials and tribulations, glad you found a formula that works
Finally, someonebwho spells Katelyn the same as me! Stumbled upon y'alls channel and now I'm hooked!! Can not wait to get to work trying some of your suggestions.
I know this is an older video but I have been binging and YALL SHOULD totally make custom cool tiles and tile a back splash or a bathroom or something! That would be so awesome! You guys are so great I’m always laughing and I really appreciate being brought along for the entire journey and not just the stuff that works! ✌🏼 big fan
I used to work as a bricklayer so know a little tiny bit about cement you had a tiny bit of washing liquid it will make the concrete cement flow better I think it breaks the surface tension of the water and put tiny tiny bubbles in the mix which makes the cement slide better between itself which also means you put less water in the mix so reduces the curing time you could also Pat glass fibres in your mix to make your coasters super strong
Never heard that tip about the washing liquid, we'll have to try that sometime! We've definitely been wanting to try mixing in the fibers - might try that if we do a bigger build, like a table top
EvanAndKatelyn yes you can use a mortar plasticizer like this www.screwfix.com/p/cementone-cemplas-mortar-plasticiser-dark-brown-5ltr/63831?tc=LB6&ds_kid=92700024762949181&ds_rl=1245250&gclid=Cj0KCQjwyYHaBRDvARIsAHkAXcttzhtWyV5lCoD1SY51VeqOFl2vnBOFuQYMxkBXPPMZ22jErbiDVdcaAi5mEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=COHl5tWEjtwCFUauUQodPU0CVA but when we ran out and don't have any plasticizer we would use dish soap only a couple of drops
First thought after seeing the title of the video... Wow, that's a lot of coasters. Evan and Katelyn are seriously ocd about glass stains on their tables. The coasters look great. I like the little splash of color. Well done

Jackbo M hahah
lol, guess we should sell some :P
If you switch to Rapid Set concrete (in the red bags) you can put the dry concrete in the molds, tap or vibrate for settling, then spray a light mist over the powder until saturated. Should set fairly quickly without having to deal with pre-mixing wet concrete and trying to get the air bubbles out. (and clean-up should be easier. Only thing you'll have to figure out is how long to mist it for the moisture to get all the way through.
Haha! Happy birthday! 😘🎁🎊🎉🎂
What a way to spend a birthday! :P
Hahaha!!! I just started listening to the Patreon after show and I’m cracking up over my comment now!!!
So satisfying seeing the molds still being good all those months (and coasters) later!
They've really held up well (thank goodness!)
Would love to buy some of these. Love you guys and thanks for showing us the process. So cool to watch. Heard about you two on the Making It podcast and had to check y'all out! ♡
Thank you so much for coming by to check out the channel!
Love you!! Thank you very much for your positive! I am your new sub!
Now make a settlers of Catan board!!!
we actually have been thinking about a foldable chess board! Well Evan has, I don't know how to play chess so I'll leave that one up to him :P
The Siedler-pieces have basically your coasters as the base, so the idea is not as far fetched; unless you start counting the miniatures going on top, but still ;)
I love your jovial-ness 🥰🥰 aaaaand great project info!
NERDS! I Love it. I was wondering if you could make a medieval chest? 3d printed? Cast in concrete? Fires a laser?
All of those things sound amazing
When applying spray primer - use a small brush to work the primer into spots that are hard to hit, and move around the excess into the thinner areas. The resulting smooth surface should help with your molds. Thanks!
Who else’s video glitched at 11:34?
Did I get anyone??
yes unfortunately... :(
K L
That’s the joke.
They made a mold to create a mold brilliant!
Im pretty sure all concretes only need water to work...
I think that brand just cures faster
"wear a mask!"
that joke aged poorly, i think we'd all agree
I'm happy for you two!
Great job!
That's definitely something we are considering! Thank you and glad you like the video!
Ah thank you so much for the tip! How big are these syringes??
@@EvanAndKatelyn Most of the time we're potting connectors or cable splices which doesn't require a huge batch size. We use different sizes depending on the application and the mix ratio. The largest we use is around 200 mL for part A and B, to make a 400 mL batch total if it's a 50:50 mix.
Thank you!
We actually do do that most times and it works great! I think we did it in the project but breezed over it
Okay I was just going back to your old videos and I just want to point out how much y'all changed. These older videos and your more current ones are 10/10. They are just a little bit different. Finger lickin' good.
Sweet! I love how these turned out, thanks for showing your process!
Really cool machine and an awesome video made by two awesome people
Thank you and thank you! :D
You guys are my favorite! So much love so much joy!
Aww thank you!!
Those are some really great tips! Would love to do some tests with matte/gloss.
I know we've don't castings in shiny plastic molds and it came out glossy like the plastic so I think you're onto something!
So much fun! You can also de-gas the silicone in a pressure pot if you needed to make more molds.
Ah that's a great idea! Thanks!
Video on CNC'ing wax for resin moulds? Or silicone caulk moulds with dishsoap/glycerine??
Happy birthday Evan! thanks to you both for the content.
Thank you!!
Always a great rewatch 😁
I love the chill explanation of the loopiness (1:04AM)
Concrete tile version of Settlers of Catan??? Pleaaase??
Hahaha yep... many late nights went into these coasters
Haha that would be pretty awesome!
Super! It's great that you share all the ups and downs, not just the A to B everything is perfect... ;-)
Oh yeah there's always stuff that goes wrong - were often doing things for the first time on camera so it's inevitable!
They are all business in just one video, actually very smart. 🤔

This was a lot of fun to watch. If you vibrate the concrete with a sander after you pour, the air bubbles will dissipate.
Thank you! Ah yes, we did do that but I can't remember if it made it into the edit or not haha (it's been a bit since we edited this one!)
When your mixing silicone it's best to do it in a large bucket witrh a drill that has a plaster-mixing head, then you don't get uncured areas.
Great video! Wonderful to see how the power of the Maker community came to the rescue. Thanks for sharing the trials and tribulations, glad you found a formula that works
The maker community is such an awesome group of people :D Glad you like the video!
Finally, someonebwho spells Katelyn the same as me! Stumbled upon y'alls channel and now I'm hooked!! Can not wait to get to work trying some of your suggestions.
Thank you so much fellow Katelyn!
Love to see how your channel(s) have grown since originally posting this video! Me & my sister love your channel !
Thank you!
You guys deserve more subs. You make very high quality videos and are a lot of fun to watch because you fail a lot and are very relatable
Aww thanks!! Maybe one day we'll have more 😊 but really grateful for where we are and the time we get to spend together making fun things!
I so love this Channel! This is why I subscribed to your channel! ❤️
You should tile a room with these but creative resin pours not concrete
silicone doesn't cure also with any latex, so if your gloves are latex that affects the curing process
First thought after seeing the title of the video... Wow, that's a lot of coasters. Evan and Katelyn are seriously ocd about glass stains on their tables.
The coasters look great. I like the little splash of color. Well done
Hahaha! Hey, when you make your own coffee table, people best not be putting their drinks on your hard work! 😋😋😋
Awesome....thank you for making this video
