Michael Li has practiced kung fu for over 15 years. If you were to minmax Astarion as a rogue monk, you’d get to witness his martial arts skills first-hand in Baldur’s Gate 3.
I love seeing these BTS videos. Everyone did such an amazing job. The VAs get so much credit but it's nice that we get to see some of the other people that contributed to making this masterpiece.
I always loved the ways monks move in the game, it just feels so powerful. I always have to have a monk in my party now. Every playthrough somebody else gets reclassed into monk.
Anybody else played a lot with Sina'zith, the monk from Withers spawns? I'm not a big fan of getting too far from what the original characters are in terms of lore so I chose the spawn instead. But it was only on my second playthrough tho, so maybe I'll spice things up a bit more in subsequent ones.
I never gave monks much thought before, but when I started a playthrough with my brother I rolled one up for the first time. I didn’t realize how much I was missing out, my monk has been a ton of fun to play!!
As someone who has practiced Shaolin martial arts for 20 years, I say well done. It's hard to translate the forms and practice into motion capture and bring out the character's personality and skill set. Thank you Michael for bringing your skills and talents to show kung fu to the world within the context of such an amazing game.
So this is the guy behind the gorgeous elegant movements of my wood elf ranger? Always loved that archery stance with the arm thrown out backwards, or the sword stance crouching low with the blade held level; it gives such a sense of poise and agility to the character.
Thank you for your contribution to this incredible game, Michael. In my Shadow Monk Elf play-through I was oftentimes awed by the movements I would see on screen!
Thank you for the official Korean subtitles on the new Larian channel😍😍 I was able to learn information that I wouldn’t have understood if it were only in English!
Part of the reason I was able to use this game to introduce D&D to a friend of mine was the Way of The Four Elements path-- she was able to live out her dream of being the Avatar. (The fact that she immediately fell in love with Wyll and Karlach also helped, haha.)
Merci beaucoup!! And may I say, I'm really loving the behind-the-scenes insights on the LCFH! Voice actors are always so much more high-visibility than the rest of the skill, talented, passionate people who bring these worlds to life, and it's a treat to see you, Larian, appreciate and showcase these people. (And to be able to enjoy these insights directly from them, too!)
oh i am loving these videos! it's so easy to forget everything is mocapped, and how much love and care goes into every animation!! monk is especially satisfying to play, every move gives such strong feedback, i feel so Powerful. and it's all thanks to michael's work
Ah, this is the guy I have to thank for how baddass my first playthrough was. My monk and I are greateful for your service, hopefully you're part of Larian's next project so I can keep Kung-Fuing my foes to oblivion.
Mission accomplie Monsieur Li ! 😉 I had a hard time with the monk class at the beginning of the game, but it was precisely the way my character moved and his combat moves that made me want to continue my game, and it was worth it. Mission accomplished Mr. Li !
I'm currently playing a Monk on my Durge run, and I'm having so much fun with it. Definitely one of my favorite class, thank you so much for introducing us to the person who created these moves!
These videos from the team behind the game are incredibly cool, they open up the resulting content from a different angle, from the author's perspective.
Shoutout to everyone who worked on this game! Artists, coders, bug testers, animators...everyone! You all deserve credit for making such a mark on the gaming world
Great job on monks, Michael. The animations are hands-down the best part of the class. Even though four elements is in a rough place, I cannot stop using fireball due to its animation. You spit that fireball from your mouth!
I really love this channel...great to see all of the hard work from vastly different disciplines, and I love the flat style management that larian employs, it really seems like Swen and the rest of the team hire talented people, listen to them, let them have input and ownership, and guide the ship to Swens vision. Sound simple but this is NOT how most game companies are ran, and it is truly delightful.
Thank you for your SPECTACULAR work Monseiur Li! I've been a life long fan of martial arts as an observer and consumer of media and even practiced Kenpo as a child. Your passion and skill definitely shined through your work on BG3! I wish I could get back into martial arts myself but lessons are expensive! XD I'll have to settle for making another monk in BG3 I guess.
As someone who in past life studied Nan Shaolin kung fu for several years, I really appreciate the insight and work that went into BG3. The game really is exceptional, thanks to the attention to detail, and yes, it's a fantasy game, but with things like the stances, movements true to the style, etc., it just feels "realistic". And as Larian are no longer bound to follow the D&D ruleset, hopefully their next game has five elements, not four! Well done, Michael and Larian!
I can say with absolute certainty that the monk animations in BG3, and especially the 4 elements, are some of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in a game! Congratulations Larian and thank you for adding so much love to the class! I remember that in Divinity 2 I missed the monks, but we were very well rewarded for the wait! And don't forget him in Divinity 3! xD
My first Durge was a tiefling shadow monk and I loved him. I was always really enjoying watching him move around in combat with his quarterstaff and later unarmed strikes. Then I made Astarion an assassin shadow monk once and man, that was fun to watch.
monk is still my favorite class :D i also really really hope they talk to the sound designers on the team to see how the audio for the spells and stuff were created!
Monks are excellent in this game, and a lot of fun. If anyone else here is a Naruto fan, definitely try the monk! I usually play mages (mostly Sorcerer), but I just started a new playthrough as a monk and.... I mean..... it's just soooo satisfying, dattebayo! ;)
Yeah, I agree. I respecced Jaheira into a monk in my last playthru and she was just tanking for me with all those multiple hits.
I'm still on my first run and didn't even know you can reclass characters. Definitely gonna try that, thank you!
Oh man, monks are my favorite! Awesome job Michael❤❤❤
Honestly he nailed it
Thank you for your kind words 🙏
This makes me want to try a monk build now...never played as a monk before. ❤
Always happy to be reminded that in this industry there are still games made with passion, care, and genuine artistry.
The martial arts flow of the characters are so beautifully expressed, thanks to people like this guy.
Truly, a master
Many thanks 🙏

As a monk main I can only say this: Thank you, Michael!
🫡

I was able to learn information that I wouldn’t have understood if it were only in English!
Monk has always been my favorite class in d&d! Thank you Michael for bringing how I always imagined a Monk to move, to strike to life!!
I was an honor to be part of this project 🙏 Thank you

softly spoken but the passion and love was unmistakable
Kung Fu is about passion 🔥
It's like dancing. Just beautiful ❤
Been a martial artist for 30 years. hell yes my wood elf monk has been a blast to play. Thank you sir.
It was an honor. Thank you sir 🙏
Thanks for the amazing work on the Monk. It's my favorite! Merci, merci, voisins belges !
oh i am loving these videos! it's so easy to forget everything is mocapped, and how much love and care goes into every animation!! monk is especially satisfying to play, every move gives such strong feedback, i feel so Powerful. and it's all thanks to michael's work
Quickly becoming my favorite channel on RUclips. I get so excited every time a notification drops!
Thank you so much for watching!
Love these looks behind the scenes. Everyone did such a wonderful job on this masterpiece.

These type of comments are my motivation. Thank you 🙏
I'm loving all the behind the scenes 💜 yes please show more of all the amazingly talented people behind BG3!
I adore how much care Larian put into the monk. It's utterly fantastic.
Absolutely masterful job Michael, you nailed exactly what you explained. Every move you could feel the impact.
I really appreciate your comment. Thank you 🙏
You did a great job Micheal. Glad they did this video because you’re one of the many unsung heroes of this game
So cool! I honestly had no idea how much detail went into making just these small sequences. Please keep posting these kinds of videos! I love it!
Every time one of these videos pops up I get more excited for my next playthrough when patch 7 drops
Thank you and thank everyone both inside and outside of Larian that made this game a reality.
Wow. Having done kung fu myself for almost 10 years, it still feels kinda insane to me recognizing certain techniques/moves 😍
I'm currently playing a Monk on my Durge run, and I'm having so much fun with it. Definitely one of my favorite class, thank you so much for introducing us to the person who created these moves! C’est un honneur #blessed

I love monk! I struggle to start any other character to be honest. What a treat to see the person behind the class I love.
Thank you so much for sharing this. Michael, you did a fantastic job.
Would love to see Larian devs react to a speedrun of the game with commentary.
Shoutout to everyone who worked on this game! Artists, coders, bug testers, animators...everyone! You all deserve credit for making such a mark on the gaming world

Incredible! Thank you for sharing with us!!!
His work is a big reason why monks are my favourite class. ♥
Thanks your comment about my work 🙏
Lot's of love sent for you sir and Larian from France !! xoxo
🙏🙏
I did not understand anything, but I am loving it. And yes, I am minmaxing Astarion as a rogue monk and enjoying every move he makes.
there are subtitles :)

Michael! Your artistry breathed real life to these characters! Thank you for your wonderful work!
Thank you for your kind words. Sincerely
thanks to you monk is my fav class, merci beaucoup, bon travaill❤
Monks are OP in BG3 hands down. Love them. Amazing job done, Larian! ❤
Magnifique taff, merci !
Deliberately different movement types for each of the elements is a great touch!
My first Durge was a tiefling shadow monk and I loved him. I was always really enjoying watching him move around in combat with his quarterstaff and later unarmed strikes.
Then I made Astarion an assassin shadow monk once and man, that was fun to watch.
🙏🙏
Monks in this game look so good, Michael did an awesome job!!!
These movements are entrancing!
Voices of my people! Vive Le Québec!
⚜️⚜️⚜️
Is it a Quebec accent? I *was* wondering why I could suddenly understand far more of spoken French than usual
@@LivesOnStars yes Quebec accent !
thank you, I ALWAYS have Astarion as a Monk in every single playthrough, its so GOOD! :)
I hadn't thought to play a monk. But seeing how much work went into them, I think I have to play every subclass now.
Every single class is viable and each is fun in their own way. Id recommend it
Woo, another stuntperson! Great work, Michael!
Thank you 🙏
I am making a monk character after watching this.
same.
I love seeing behind the scenes stuff!
Keep these videos coming, this is fantastic stuff
If he had said "what is this lunch" in french I would've understood :o) These were all good, hope we can get finishers next game :P
monk is still my favorite class :D i also really really hope they talk to the sound designers on the team to see how the audio for the spells and stuff were created!
Ok I am for sure having a monk next playthrough! These animations are cool as hell
amazing work what an artist!
really cool stuff. would be interesting to meet the animators for drow next! I'm absolutely in love with their stances and animations
Hell yeah, next run I'll try a monk!
Monks are my favourite for gamefeel too! Great job!
I love these videos!
Mission accomplie Michael !
Merci beaucoup, ça fait plaisir à lire !
I almost exclusively play elves largely because of their combat animations, bien joué Michael!
Thank you for this game. Seriously.
I’ve been doing some quarterstaff whacking in the game lately and I’m glad I correctly identified it as kung fu!
Rarely does watching a video make me want to play the game more, these do.
Dang. I really need to give a Monk playthrough a chance.
Amazing.
I have to finally try a Monk playthrough. Maybe in Patch 7.....after another Sorlock run of course...
Il parle français ❤
Love this!
This is so cool!
This is dope!!!
Elf dual wielding = Best animation
Playing an open hand monk was so much fun. I tried to play a different class in my second playthrough, but stopped - it just wasn't as cool.
Great job!!!
Monks are excellent in this game, and a lot of fun. If anyone else here is a Naruto fan, definitely try the monk! I usually play mages (mostly Sorcerer), but I just started a new playthrough as a monk and.... I mean..... it's just soooo satisfying, dattebayo! ;)
Merci.
I wish these videos were a bit longer tbh, under 3 mins is almost a short
So that's why Monks are OP.
Fier de nos créateurs québécois 🥳
⚜️🙌
This makes me want to play monk.
Gotta roll a monk now 😍
Cool!
Do different races have their own different kung-fu moves as a monk? And different weapon fighting styles?
