Christopher Kerr, MD, PhD, is the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Executive Officer for Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo. Alongside direct patient care, Dr. Kerr’s focus is in the areas of leadership and patient advocacy. He has overseen the integration and expansion of palliative care into hospitals and developed a large home-based program for both adults and children and has published on innovative program models that are designed to better align patient/family services to the complexity of needs inherent to advanced illness.
Dr. Kerr’s background in research has evolved from bench science toward the human experience of illness as witnessed from the bedside, specifically patients’ dreams and visions at the end of life. Although medically ignored, these near-universal experiences often provide comfort and meaning, as well as insight into the life led and the death anticipated. To date, the research team at Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo has published multiple studies on this topic and documented over 1,500 end-of-life events, many of which are videotaped.
Dr. Kerr’s work was published in a recent book called Death Is but a Dream: Finding Hope and Meaning at Life's End.
Christopher Kerr is a hospice doctor. All of his patients die. Yet, he has cared for thousands of patients who, in the face of death, speak of love and grace. Beyond the physical realities of dying are unseen processes that are remarkably life-affirming. These include dreams that are unlike any regular dream. Described as "more real than real", these end-of-life experiences resurrect past relationships, meaningful events, and themes of love and forgiveness; they restore life's meaning and mark the transition from distress to comfort and acceptance.
Drawing on interviews with over 1,400 patients and more than a decade of quantified data, Dr. Kerr reveals that pre-death dreams and visions are extraordinary occurrences that humanize the dying process. He shares how his patients' stories point to death as not solely about the end of life, but as the final chapter of humanity's transcendence. Kerr's audiobook also illuminates the benefits of these phenomena for the bereaved, who find solace in seeing their loved ones pass with a sense of calm closure.
Beautifully written, with astonishing real-life characters and stories, this audiobook is at its heart a celebration of our power to reclaim the dying process as a deeply meaningful one. Death Is but a Dream is an important contribution to our understanding of medicine's and humanity's greatest mystery.
Please enjoy my conversation with Dr. Christopher Kerr.

When my brother Tom died I was in his bed lying on my side next to him. I was singing to him and had my head on his shoulder. I new he was brain dead due to an aneurysm but when his heart stopped beating I looked up and saw his spirit leave his body, I absolutely saw this. He was at peace. I know I will see him again and he is with the Lord. That was 24 years ago and I’m now 70. I know I will be with him one day. It’s a promise from God✝️☮️

Listen to this bring back so many memories.
My mother passed away with stomach cancer in 2004.
In that time, she totally rejected me, I haven't seen or spoken to her in over 10 years.
I had this feeling about a week before her passing that I had to get in contact with her.
By chance, I found out she was in hospice.
I visited her on the 24th of December, seeing her the first time in many years, already in a coma.
    It broke my heart.
I gave her a bedbath and washed the few hair she still had, put body lotion on her, cleaned her face, put nice cream on her, just talking to her about my childhood years. And the happy moments we had.
A tear dropped down her face, and at that moment, I realized she was sorry for all the hardship she caused.
3 hours later, she passed away.
I believe she was waiting for me.
Although she was already in a coma, my mother knew I was there.
And the tear drop spoke a thousand words❤

I was a hospice nurse for 15 years. Hospice is a journey. Some patients saw their lived ones who have passed on. One lady lost all of her 5 children in a fire. Just before she died she told her husband that all her children were standing at the end of her bed she said she had to go and be with them and breathed her last. I have so many beautiful hospice stories you can't help but believe in God

And evolution is a flat out lie. I did not evolve from a chimp or a toad. If any of us did, why are there still toads and chimps? Sorry, but we came here to experience the physical beauty and wonder that is life. Our souls, that energy that allows the heart to pump blood and the brain to send electrical impulses to parts of the body. That I believe, is truth.

I was traveling long distance to see my grandmother every weekend, who was in a nursing home. I said hang on and I'll be back next weekend; I don't want you to be alone, when it's your time to go. She said, I'm not alone, he's with me at night. I asked, who is with you? She said I don't know, but he's with me at night, I'm not alone. I asked her if it was someone that worked there and she said no. I asked if it was Jesus or an angel? No. I asked if it was her husband that had died before her, a family member or a friend (I figured I had everyone covered at that point) and she said NO. I said well I need to know who it is... She said again, I don't know! It's okay, he's with me at night; I'm not alone. So I stayed in her room all night that night and I talked to the nurses, to make sure no one else was going in there other than the actual night nurse, to take her vitals. The nights I stayed, she slept peacefully. Sometimes in her sleep, she sang old hymns, word for word; yet during the day, she couldn't remember all the verses. Her mind was there till the end; her body grew tired. She was ready to go "home" she said. I told her that it was okay, that we were all in agreement, that she could go. Well, she died in my arms the next night. I was praying a few days later after her funeral; I just didn't understand. I said God, I just need to know that she was okay at night and who was with her. I need to know. I heard this calm and reassuring voice, that called me by name... He said Cheri, it was my Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who was with your grandmother at night; she was never alone. 😮 ❤

My mother was an RN and worked at a nursing home. She loved older people. She always knew when someone was going to die. She was the shift supervisory RN so she wasn't involved with the actual hands on care, but she would go around and visit them when she could. She would see something about them even if they seemed fine. At first she would tell the nurses to keep an eye on the one she said would die, but it kind of freaked them out when she did that. One day we were sitting at the dinner table and she was out of sorts. I asked why and she burst out sobbing. One lady she was particularly fond of, she said, was going to die. I knew the lady. Her dad was so mad she wasn't a boy when she was born, that he named her John. And she insisted on being called Ms John. I asked her how she knew. She said she sees a dark cloud around them. I'm guessing an aura. I didn't know the lingo when I was young. Growing up around someone that has spiritual things happen all the time, and the rest of our very large family having other gifts, made me feel kind of cheated and left out. I don't really have any like that. Knowing when someone was getting ready to die must've been awful. But she took it in stride, just part of life. I miss her terribly

He had been unable to speak for 3 weeks. He suddenly opened his eyes and said my name. I went to him and he spoke clearly, saying 'I'm thinking of just taking it easy and going on a summer vacation'. I told him to go ride his bike along the beach in Florida, which he loved to do. I also told him we loved him and we'd be fine. Moments later his beautiful blue eyes became so illuminated as if he had a flashlight on behind them like stained glass all lit up brilliantly from behind. My mother's passing was nothing my sisters and I were expecting nor her hospice nurses. We had been told she was just beginning to transition. She was surprisingly lucid and quite talkative. First thing that occurred was she told my sisters and myself that that our father, who passed away 10 years and 4 days before she did, was coming along with her father to take her home. She replied heaven when asked where home was. Then one of her long-term nurses was a little teary because she and my mother had developed a really close relationship. My mother told her she had nothing to be upset because her son was right next to her and was looking out for her. Without our family understanding what exactly was happening, this nurse asked questions such as where is he and describe him which my mother did with no hesitation. Finally, the nurse explained she had lost her son as a child and had never told anyone who was still alive or people she worked with and said mother described him to a T. Finally, my father and grandfather showed up according to her and she died. Still think about it often, it's been 3 years.

My brother surrounded by friends and family 1 week prior to his passing asked who was in the corner. Everyone looked but no one was there. The next minute he out stretched his arms in a hugging position and said Dad's here ! Although no one else could see my father they embraced. I know he came to collect his son and the validation has given us so much comfort.

My parents are in heaven as well as my first born son who I never got to hold. When my Mom was diagnosed with lung cancer we were having a talk one day and I asked her to rock my little son until I could do it myself. She just smiled at me. I miss her a lot.

When my mom had a major stroke and on hospice, just minutes before she passed, something told me to get up and go to the back bedroom, that was my bedroom growing up. They had a file cabinet in the room so I pulled open the file drawer and saw a lot of organized papers and in the very back of the drawer there was a clear baggie with a bunch of paper folded up so I took the baggie and went back to sit next to my two daughters and my mom‘s bed. Opening these pieces of paper, they were love letters from my dad to my mom during the war in the 40s!! So special and so sweet as we went through them and cried. A couple minutes later I told my mom we found these love letters from dad and he has to be up there smiling down with open arms waiting for you. She passed away a couple moments later. My dad passed almost 30 years earlier. Thank you dad for guiding me to your love letters that we never knew of ❤

Just before my brother passed he was looking towards a corner of the ceiling and he looked afraid. I knew he wasn’t ready to leave his grandkids, so I touched his arm and told him it would be okay, he would see all of us soon. I said,”there’s nothing for you to be afraid of, mom and dad are waiting for you. He seemed to relax , took a couple of breaths and left this world. I will never forget the fear he first had when he realized it was time to go. I felt relieved when he no longer felt scared.

Being a nurse, I quite often have held the hand of a ND patient that has no family to be with them and comfort them at this time, but I found that all had a sense of knowing it was their time and they were not afraid. When a family member was at her last minutes, my brother saw her brother, from the other side , reached his hand out and took her hand, guiding her spirit out of her body. It was magical. Knowing what I know about it, I am not afraid to go now. Anytime around 80 would be good for me.

I was there when she reached her hand up to reach for someone and after that she was no longer breathing. It was a blessing that someone came for her. My younger brother told me that he thinks it was our older brother who died when he was 19. I’d like to think I can see my brother when I go. When I was about 11, my grandmother was suffering from two massive strokes and pneumonia for good measure. The doctors had said she only had two r three days at best. She could only make a grunting sound, and had no movement to speak of. The family were taking it in turns to sit with her, so she wouldn't be alone when her time came.
My mother and I were sitting with her, chatting between us, so that everything would sound ' normal ' as we could make it. Suddenly, she sat bolt upright, gave the most beautiful beaming smile, and with perfect diction, said " Oh , here's Albert, and he's brought Louis too. They've come to fetch me". Albert was her late husband, who died half a century earlier, and Louis her youngest favourite brother, who ran away to sign up for ( and died in) at 15 for WW1.
Then, she gave a huge sigh, held out her arms, slumped back on her pillow, and that was that.
I'm 70+ now, and have found when you broach the subject, find anyone who has been around death, has a very similar experience. I'm convinced that ' they' send someone you know and love to collect you.

She was happy and talking to family members, even remembering names. She even recognized that I was crying but I said I am OK. I said to my sister that Mum is going to leave us tomorrow. My niece was born at 5:45 am, at 5:45 pm, I was holding my mum’s hand and praying, when she took her last breadth, she was gone peacefully with all her children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren around. My dad was laying quietly in a rented hospital bed in his own bedroom. The room was darkened because they thought he was sleeping. Suddenly he said. Out loud, “Oh thanks for bringing the light, it helps a lot.” He held up his right arm and put out his right hand like he was taking someone’s hand and he said, “Jesus.” Then he breathed his last and he was gone. He had been raised by a religious mother in the Church. His father died when he was only 7 years old. He had an older sister who had already passed away. He had been at the Battle of Midway on an aircraft carrier during WWII. He prayed everyday to come home alive and he did, married my mother, she was 17 and he was 20. He was an exceptionally good man who led my mom and his children to God. I never saw him do anything wrong, he always was basically a good man and he took care of his widowed mother. His sister had become a nun, so she worked for God’s purposes and she taught 8th grade and ran the parochial schools for many years as the principal. They both lived into their 90’s. He would want to see Jesus and I can’t prove if he really did or he wanted too, you can’t really say. But Jesus said He was the way and the Light so maybe my dad really saw it first then saw Him for real or in his mind, who knows.

Putting family members on hospice is a selfless and extremely loving thing to do. It's a hard decision for some but, if family members would keep in mind that if it were them laying in a hospital bed suffering, you'd want your family to allow you to live the rest of your days pain-free and comforted. That way quality of life is optimized in the final stretch of your life. I do agree with states like Oregon that every state should door and it's basically euthanasia. If I ever get terminal cancer with no hope, I'd want to die when I say I die and not suffer with extremely painful cancer.

She wanted to know why I was crying and I told her. She then described to me her own near death experience that happened in her teenaged years. It was completely classic. The tunnel; passing plants and galaxies. At the end if the tunnel she met her aunt, who had recently died. Her aunt told her that she still had work to do. And she survived. NOTE: I heard from him some months later when I heard him say ‘Mom’. Just ‘Mom’ with no message. It was wonderful.

My Mama passed away in 2012, I was her caregiver in the last months she was here. Always so smart she could call to mind so many things from the past and the life she lived. Born in 1917 she was a witness to so many changes in the world. Daddy passed suddenly in 1994 and from that day forward she was ready to go home, Mama was a faithful servant of the Lord so she moved forward in the knowledge that God would call her in his time. When she was told she had cancer the doctor asked her how she wanted to go forward, she said I want to go home, so we did. For the first time in a long time she was happier than I had seen her in years. Days passed, and as she drew closer to the end, more and more she talked about people she had worked with in the cotton mill. One night I heard her talking to someone, I listened to the one-sided conversation but really didn't understand. The next morning I asked her about it and she said her friends were there, all of them long since gone on to meet the Lord, she was upset because they wouldn't allow her to embrace them. I mentioned this to the Hospice Nurse and she said these were the Angel's coming to help ease the way and welcome her but it wasn't quite her time yet, that's why she couldn't hug them. About a week later she made that turn, her eyes communicated love but she could no longer speak. As midnight came she left this world to go home and see her Saviour and be reunited with "her darling (my daddy), and her son. She told me to remain faithful and wait on the Lord in one of our long talks in those finial days, days that past far to quickly but I am doing what she told me to, I am waiting. I will be 70 this year, she was 3 weeks shy of being 95 when she died.

I laid by the side of my sister in her final hours. She knew she was dying and at one point opened her eyes and said “there’s nothing there”. Just prior to slipping into her final coma, she jumped and with tears rolling down her cheeks said “I can see my father”. She was always a daddy’s girl and I knew he would come for her. I laid with her, holding her hand and watched her peacefully pass away.

I had a friend whose father was very ill, elderly and bed ridden. He was home and the family was basically waiting for him to pass. At the end he would not, or could not speak. The day before he passed he suddenly was very talkative so his children all came to visit and talk to him. He then told them that his mother was coming tomorrow. They were surprised and sure enough he passed the next day. This was told to me outside the funeral home in front of his siblings who were present. They all said it was really amazing . It seriously gave me hope for my own mortality.

I've worked as a hospice nurse aide, and it was physically and mentally challenging! People felt closer to God knowing it was their final stretch ,🙏🏼 and I would open a window when they were ready to go. Some got agitated, others calm and detached not wanting to eat, just sips of water. The experience was eerie and sad seeing family members crying.
I knew when my patients were getting ready to leave, and tried to make them comfortable by treating them with dignity and respect. I just felt it in the air when entering their room. One patient asked me for a priest while the family was in denial. I told them that's what he wanted. The priest then came to administer the final rites, the patient passed few hours later. I felt he was in peace, and I did my part by making him feel comfortable and by making sure he saw the priest before dying against family wishes 🙏🏼

Although the family gathered about his bed in hospital the afternoon before he passed we were unable to go to him in the early hours of the morning when he died because of circumstances.I was quite distressed, we had been married 62 years and I had nursed him at home for the last 12 months. Some days later my son and I were out in the garden and all of a sudden I was shown a beautiful rose bush with lovely red roses. I didn’t say anything to my son because he is an atheist, but he said to me later “Did you see that lovely rose bush appear in the garden” My husband had always said he would contact me if possible when he went over. ❤ Greetings from Australia.

I am a retired Hospice nurse for several years right before retirement...such a privilege. I was exposed to many different cultures, moral valves, person's experiences. I so relate to Dr. Kerr's experiences & observations on so many levels. Some finished their lives here on earth with such peace & joy & even some humor. One man was confused for years & non-responsive. His 3 adult children were at his bedside arguing who would get the picture over the mantel. Despite my attempts to be my patient's advocate, they continued. My patient's eyes remained closed as he clearly said, "No one is getting that picture." And then there were those that broke our hearts. While taking their last breaths, some were pulling on their sheets with all their might & holding onto the bedrails trying not to go. Their faces became distorted, their jaws almost dislodged. They were not looking into heaven. I also saw those that died with what they were familiar with. One lady kept yelling out, "No, Pat, I am not getting on the bus with you". She repeated this loudly several times before she died. A family member explained that she & her sister Pat would ride the bus to go shopping or to see a movie. Please, if you are with someone who is actively dying, talk to them, share adventures you had or their favorite recipe cooked for them, etc.

I had a near-death experience once when I was nearly murdered at 32. I saw a beautiful bright white light that communicated with me about important matters in my life. It could not have been more loving or compassionate, it was so beautiful. I later learned that it's normal for people near death to see white lights, Angels, or friends and family who have passed before them. It's to prepare them for the afterlife and it's meant to be comforting for the dying person. It's not because the person is losing their mind, mentally deteriorating, or hallucinating. What I experienced was realer than real. And it was very transformational indeed.

It's very difficult for one who is aware that their time has come, if those around them are in denial. They have no one with whom they can openly discuss what's happening to them ... and it's even worse when one cannot discuss one's final thoughts. Those who allow a terminal person the opportunity to talk about their final thoughts are truly compassionate healers.

My mother was dying of cancer and said she saw her dad, who died 3 years prior. When my grandmother was dying I saw her looking at the ceiling from one side to the other with her eyes wide. She asked me did I see those angels? I said no. She blinked and kept looking and asking me, did I see the angels…it was comforting to me honestly.

My dad started his first real job when he was 18. He was the youngest. All the guys he worked with became really good friends. As time passed all of them slowly passed away and he was always so sad. About a week before he passed he was in the hospital and you would think they were all having a party. He would talk to them as if they were carrying on full conversations. He was so happy to be able to spend time with his old friends again. 😊

Even though I was going through something terrifying and traumatizing, the light was there to comfort me and let me know that despite appearances, I was safe. The light protected my child and me.

As children, both my late husband and I had Near Death Experiences that we never should have survived. Therefore neither of us have ever feared death. After we met and married, we went on an incredible spiritual journey together into mysticism and had many wild metaphysical experiences. When he was dying from cancer he spent the last 3 weeks of his life in a hospital palliative care unit. Two young student nurses, on rotation, took care of him (one day shift, one night shift). Strangely they were both named Ann (I later looked the name up and saw that it means 'Grace'). When my husband was unconscious and very close to the end, day shift Ann told me that he had changed her life. I was alone with him when he left his body. I heard his last breath and felt his joy fill the entire room, at being free from his destroyed body. That was over 7 years ago and he has remained very present in my life. The tricks he has played in our house (he always was a joker) and the many love messages he has found ways to send me, are a source of both amusement and ongoing comfort . . . until we meet again.

My mother died in the hospital. She was fully delirious at the time of her death and so there were no goodbyes for the family. However, two weeks before she went into the hospital for the last time, she'd been at home with me, her daughter. My mother had full blown dementia and was at all times delirious. In addition to dementia, she was recovering from a heart attack and was on many medications. So communication with her was minimal. However, as God would have it; the last Sunday she was with me, she spoke to me. She spoke in German, her mother language. She called me by my German name and asked me how I was doing; that she was so worried about me that I had so much work to do taking care of this big house, her and my father. She spoke to me for a few hours and then after lunch, she fell back into delirium again and we never spoke again. Her condition worsened that afternoon and she was rushed back into the hospital. She died a few weeks later. But we'd had our last talk and without it, I don't know what I'd do.

As a Caregiver l took care of a lot of hospice patience and watch them passes away into my care, l remember one of my patient with cancer and dementia said to me that my grandmother said you're just like your mother and l burst out laughing, because it's so true and I couldn't deny that, like the doctor said l fear death in leaving my children and grandchildren, but dying is a most, but the long suffering is another thing i don't want to go through watching one of my cancer patients go through hours of respiratory distress l cried so hard and l can only pray and ask God to not let any of my family go through it, People everyday try to live like it's your last day.

It still breaks my heart remembering my husband's respiratory distress, went on for hours and hours. I couldn't stand it anymore so I told him to let go he'd suffered enough and I'd be fine, his breathing eased immediately and within a couple of minutes he was gone.

I was 13 but days before a friend of my mom’s was a traveling man who spoke the word and went where he was needed. As he was supposed to go leaving for Indiana he came to our house and my room was beside my parents and I heard them pray as I prayed with them..i was so relieved knowing he was going to heaven and 2 days later he passed

My mother refused to see me when she was in hospital, I dreamed of her two days before she died… we were in such a beautiful green garden with white flowers all around the garden, we were on a swinging garden chair and she said to me "I’m tired of fighting, I’m leaving"… she then hugged me and told me she loves me…
Me and my mom were separated when I was 5 months old, we never hugged, I don’t remember her telling me she loves me,… she passed on in 2020, I’m still struggling her departure because there’s just so much unanswered questions and unsaid things 😢

I feel like all docs need to do Hospice as a part of clinical hours. I worked EMS for years and always said docs and nurses need to do time on the truck so they can understand what we do . I will add Hospice to it because it's understanding the human condition and also, if you witness it, there's no way you will walk away from it not believing there is something else for us after death.

As a Hospice RNCM I have experienced what many may feel is unbelievable both with my patients and my own family members. Its given me a great sense of peace regarding my own mortality and the way I live my life. Dr Kerrs book is amazing, i highly recommended. Now, im not saying I'm not afraid to die because that's a normal response to the unknown but, that being said, I am much more comfortable having seen and experienced what I have and having had the pleasure of walking this final journey with my patients and their loved ones

Yes, it is such a privilege to care for hospice patients and there families. As a retired hospice worker, I can say how humbled I was and always awed by my patients and their families as they welcomed me in to this most private and intimate time of their lives. In return, it was always such an honor to be able to provide some comfort to them and help relieve some of the mystery and fear they felt. My patients and their loved ones continually restored my faith, my compassion and my purpose. I will remember each and every one of them until they come for me some day. God bless them all.

I never had the chance to talk to her about her dreams during this time. This gives me chills watching and thankful that I found this one. I know she was at peace and no more pain. Thanks Alex for doing what you do!! Much Love!

A few months before my dad died we were talking on the phone. He said he had a "vision" He said he was eating breakfast and his deceased sister that died 30 years before was standing in the kitchen. He told me her hair was in pig tails just like when she was a teenager. He told me he could see her clear as day and then she disappeared. I knew dad didn't have long. It seems maybe the transition process starts months before. It's like a loved one's soul is starting to depart. It's like they are half here and half somewhere else.

Lately she’s been telling us our Dad is with her at night and he talks to her. She finds it very comforting. Dad passed away 33 years ago. I know she will not be with us much longer.
