  • To be sure, we look at a wide variety of medical issues on The Empowering Neurologist.
But one event that will affect us all is dying. Here in America, we've experienced the medicalization of death, treating death as an enemy to be fought and defeated at all costs. Indeed, the actual process of dying that patients experience during the process is completely ignored in medical training.
Our guest today is Dr. Christopher Kerr, author of the new book, Death is But a Dream: Finding Hope and Meaning in End of Life Dreams (amzn.to/3a0dqnO).
Dr. Kerr is a hospice doctor. All of his patients die. Yet he has cared for thousands of patients who, in the face of death, speak of love and grace. Beyond the physical realities of dying are unseen processes that are remarkably life-affirming. These include dreams that are unlike any regular dream. Described as “more real than real,” these end-of-life experiences resurrect past relationships, replay meaningful events, and display themes of love and forgiveness. They restore life’s meaning and mark the transition from distress to comfort and acceptance.
Drawing on interviews with over 1,400 patients and more than a decade of quantified data, Dr. Kerr reveals that pre-death dreams and visions are extraordinary occurrences that humanize the dying process. He shares how his patients’ stories point to death as not solely about the end of life, but as the final chapter of humanity’s transcendence. Kerr’s book also illuminates the benefits of these phenomena for the bereaved, who find solace in seeing their loved ones pass with a sense of calm closure.
Christoper Kerr, MD, PhD, is the CEO and chief medical officer at Hospice Buffalo (www.hospicebuffalo.com/). Born and raised in Toronto, Kerr earned his MD and PhD in neurobiology and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Rochester. His research has received international attention and has been featured in The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, and the BBC. He lives on a horse farm in the small town of East Aurora, New York.

So interesting… The chosen background of the interviewing doctor is that of endless books-depicting ego and endless knowledge. The background of (Dr) Christopher Kerr is simple and likely, completely not even taken into consideration. No disrespect to the interviewing doctor whatsoever, and I’m grateful that he was open to such an interview with Dr Kerr. I’m grateful that he was open to learning from him.
I just lost my 18 year old son one month ago to a 4 year battle with osteosarcoma. Was it grossly unfair the hands he and our family were dealt? Absolutely.
However, his death here in our home- in his own, happy and loving bedroom was the most enlightening, sacred experience in all of my life.
I am left with a gaping hole with his absence in this life, yet I am at the same time grateful for the gift he was able to give me in his death at such a young age. I birthed him into this world, and I very much birthed him into the next experience, as I was able to tell him I would do. And he and I were one with this journey. There is no fear or negativity whatsoever in death.
    Only love.

What can I say except, “Yyeesss! She gets it!” Walking this last journey in this realm IMO is a privledge and an honor. I know you deeply miss your child of course. The way in which this journey affects us as enlightened witnesses changes us profoundly-and you mentioned gratitude and the lesson of love. The people we love never really do die, do they? It’s a sad/happy/deeply personal and humbling experience. How fortunate your son was to have you as his mom. Many of us don’t get that kind of maternal love and forgiveness for just being typical kids doing typical kid stuff. Thank you. You are my hero today.

Why don't beings in dreams have a sense of humor? When I dream lucidly and ask someone in my dream where they got their clothes from, they disappear. It's as though I shifted the spell from one context to another. But who wants to live or die in any context at all? What lies beyond context? When dying and seeing love ones, ask them where they got their clothes from. Maybe they'll joke around and say, "Walmart," or whatever. It'll free you. There's a reason some call all "this" a cosmic joke.

You all may need to spend more time studying the eastern religions and especially various indigenous beliefs which are far older than moden medicine.
