    It's disappointing not to see the shortcomings of the em5 mkIII corrected: a more durable battery, a headphone jack, usb-c access, a reinforcement of the alloy especially for the use of a tripod, more custom modes, etc. It was expected that there is not much to OM1, but at least some improvement in the menus would have been a good thing.

    • @blo5980
      @blo5980 2 года назад +2

      Keeping the same menu probably is due to the use of true pic IX processor. But it's kind of wired that they didn't put true pic x in om5 to match with the om1..

    • @Element.89
      @Element.89 2 года назад +5

      @@blo5980 The menu system surely can't be hardwired into part of the processor... it's just software and is incredible simple - definitely doesn't need a more powerful sensor to navigate a menu system and you would think some software engineering could bring the new menu to an old processor. Really a shame that they are not bringing a consistent menu system to the new line-up of camera.

      You don't actually have the camera or have tried it. OM5 is excellent, so many features in a small body. OM5 users are really positive about the camera. Yes old menu but 'My Menu' now. Load your faves in there plus Custom function buttons. Video is different from EM1 M3, unlimited recording, S-Log for more detail. I had the OM1, super camera but I wanted something light for travel - OM5 fits perfectly. Really pleased with the image quality.

    It seems they are using the same strategy as E-M5 III: put the core features of previous E-M1 (II) in it. So when it comes to OM-5, it is like a E-M1 III in a compact body. But E-M1 III is only a minor upgrade over E-M1 II, so this is the same when comparing OM-5 and E-M5 III. And the fact OM-5 and E-M5 III share the same body is even more disappointing to some like me who prefers the metallic feel of E-M5 II.

    Thanks for the preview, Jimmy.
    As you're aware, I'm a professional photographer with more years experience than I like to admit. The one thing I DON'T want is a feature-packed camera. I want a basic tool where I make the decisions. That's why I own and use two OM-5 MkII cameras, rather than any of the OM-1 series.
    That said, I like the sound of this new OM-5 and look forward to your full review and appraisal. That's because, Jimmy, I trust and value your opinion.
    Rick

    • @loco240
      @loco240 2 года назад

      Sure, of course, that's fine and completely understandable. But you don't have to use features you don't want, right? Isn't there some value to a much higher resolution EVF, much larger battery, unlimited recording time, direct power, two SD card slots instead of one, improved IBIS, and a slightly improved sensor with a bit less noise and a bit more dynamic range?

    • @rickbear7249
      @rickbear7249 2 года назад

      @@loco240 certainly, I've no objections to quality improvements to the essential features of a stills camera. What I don't want is a camera that attempts to do the thinking for the photographer. That's because it will prevent many new photographers learning the essential skills of photography, resulting in them becoming overly reliant upon selection the correct camera settings, whereas if people learn those skills for themselves, we'll see far fewer questions about "what settings should I use?" and far more people actually learning those skills for themselves.
      As I often say to photography students. Switch off all the gizmos and practice taking the same image over-and-over until you get the best possible image of your chosen subject. It sounds repetitive and boring, but learning true mastery of skill means putting in the time. That's what people learn at Art School, not what buttons to press. Practice, practice, practice, until knowing what to do becomes instinctive.
      Why would I pay for gizmos that attempt to replicate the skills I've learnt to do even better, and which anyone can learn by practicing until it's second nature?

    • @loco240
      @loco240 2 года назад

      @@rickbear7249 Yeah, Rick I feel ya. After 40 years in photography there's plenty of nostalgia here. Let me tell you, the days of 12 shot film rolls, hand held light meters, Tri-X black and white film with grain like golf balls, and on and on, look pretty darn crappy in hindsight compared to what we have now. Give me the very best stills and video camera in the type and price range that I can use - doesn't matter who you are - better cameras take better pictures.

    Upgrades to Mks are rarely over exciting to owners of the previous mark. It needs at least 2 upgrades to be worthwhile. If you're coming to the system new or from say an EM10 then the improvements could swing the balance. The reduction in weight is a bonus as you'd expect an upgrade to weigh more.

    Sadly, the legend is back, E-M1 Mark III revival. I wanted to buy a B-camera for my OM-1 primarily for weddings (my B camera is currently E-M1 Mark II). This, however, does not meet my needs (old menu, old sensor, old AF, viewfiender) - I cannot understand why they even released it. Who cares about IP53 or Starry Sky? 1% of people? This could be a beautiful camera, new OM menu should have been integrated to all new OM cameras, new sensor - maybe, AF could be somehow limited so it does not match the great OM 1 camera. But this feels really like a Olympus strategy back then :|

    This release confuses me. It's the E-M5 III with a few enhancements, not the big leap there was from E-M5 I to II, then II to III. This has the same sensor, and the same 4K 30FPS (no 60 FPS?). I guess OM felt it needed to rush something into production to fill the gap left by the discontinuation of the E-M5 III. I just expected more of an upgrade for a "new release." But instead, this is like a re-release, or a re-master. If I were in the market for this, instead I would purchase a used E-M5 III and used all the money saved on a better lens or other accessories; the image quality would be identical.

    OM Systems missed the point of the 5 line. The OG Olympus OMD EM5 was a compact innovative power house and got better with every release. This OM 5 ( which I was very hopeful of its release ) instead is a re packaged OMD EM5 MK III ( with minor updates for the OG end users ). Still, a good little camera but not the one most of us OG supporters of Micro Four Thirds and users of the 5 line wanted.

      Thanks for watching mate. Those shots should be done with 17mm 1.2 Pro. In terms of IQ, from base ISO to 1600, there’re no noticeable differences. Only higher ISO where you will see more uniformed noise pattern and less colour shifts, something that makes de-noising easier. However, it makes no difference if you use RAW de-noise softwares such as DxO PureRAW. The main difference comes when you shoot video, OM1 has better bitrates and more frame rate options, together with better noise performance in video at higher ISO also.

    I love my EM5II. It's as good as Olympus got in terms of build quality (metal shell) and the overall package. The OM System branding is ugly and seems out of place. I really hoped the "wow" camera would have had advanced computational photography like a Brenizer stitch mode that gave you comparable DOF of full frame cameras. As the market is shrinking, I can't help but think this brand's days are numbered, and thats a real shame as I would have loved to see at least one full frame L mount Olympus camera.

    USB-C and a non-plastic body at this price are a must.
    It might have been a worthy replacement for an OM10 - but a massive failure for the EM5 price point.
    It looks like the future of the micro four thirds format is now with the OM1. If its replacement is as poor as the OM5 in comparison to the EM5 mk3 it replaced then I'd say the format is as good as dead.

    OM5 isn't that bad in her price point. there has to be a difference huge enough between the flagship, med range and entry level.
    I believe that the OM5 uses a similar batter as EM5 series. I am not sure if the batteries are capable of quick charge. but i am sure the body of the camera might not be able to hold a larger battery which could take the kind of charging speed. that could be the reason for a new battery for OM1.
    the camera now can use voice control when connected to a phone. the is great especially one no longer need to risk safety to reach those difficult angle. since my newest MFT is pen-F I would not know if it was a new feature.
    the lack of headphone jack perhaps the downside of the camera for some content creator. yes, it would be great to have one. so that the creator knows the audio is working and not ending up making mute video.

The E-M5 and E-M5 II might have been awesome cameras, the mark III had also great potential if they had given it a firmware update (starry sky AF, custom modes to buttons, sweep panorama, save settings during updates, webcam support etc. - no new features for Olympus/OMDS). But the O-M5 with the features presented is a big disappointment in late 2022.

    It's not for me. I find the EM-5/OM-5 too small for my hands, which is why I went for the EM-1iii, even though the tech is more than I need. And the OM-5 is the same price as the current offer on the EM-1X (which is too big for my taste, and defeats the purpose of using Olympus). I also have an EM-10iii (also too small for comfort) and a Lumix GX80 that are my "pocket" stealth cameras. Looks like I'll still have to save up for the OM-1, or wait for the price to drop (I also want the Olympus badge for old times sake). Doesn't help that I just splashed out on the Leica 9mm f/1.7, which should arrive when they come back in stock. Fingers crossed.

    I got my EM-5 MK III within month after its release. Unfortunately then Covid hit, but the camera allowed me to grow as a photographer over last year.
    Its really amazing that the body is physically identical - i can use all the equipment, including the grip. The only problem i had and still have is that the rubber part near thumb grip at the back peeled off, and all attempts to put it back (including official Olympus repair service) failed.
    My only question:
    With EM-5 Mk III i had a situation when i had to shoot photos in summer, at noon, clear sky, while I could not use exposure shorter than 1/250 and aperture darker than F5,6. So quite a lot of photos ended up overexposed, and since then I am considering a ND filter.
    Can LiveND feature fix this?
    Its because i prefer to use hydrophobic UV filters on the lenses and usually I dont have time to replace them.

    Thank you for your continuing efforts to inform and educate us about OM/Olympus cameras and lenses. I own a OMD EM 5 MIII and don't see enough new features in the new OM-5 to upgrade. If OM had made some morphological (structural) changes to the physical camera, like bigger buttons on the back, joy stick, better hand grip, etc, I might have considered getting the new camera. The other upgrades aren't enough for me to shell out a lot of money for the new camera.

    Even I love your way of presenting new gear, the OM-5 feels - at least to me - like old technology in an old housing. Sad but true - there is no real "new" OM-5. EVF, Sensor and Processor are all already used components in other cameras. And yes - the OM-5 is an upgrade to the older E-M5 - but it is still a bit disappointing, that there is no new development in terms of picture quality. Jimmy, to be fair, this OM-5 did in fact receives some nice upgrades over the EM5 mark iii but this release basically said a lot about the current state of OM system. It is a relatively small player and has limited resources. I am sure they still have lots of EM5 mark iii bodies from Olympus that they do want to reuse to save money from designing a completely new body. The OM-1 tells us that they can still make flagship models with innovative features that can compete with the best cameras out there but they just don’t have enough resources to make multiple bodies with the latest techs. It is a shame really. If they only updated the usb port and the menu also, I would have at least given this release a pass but this and at a price that’s higher than the EM1 mark iii, I wouldn’t want to buy it.
