Admittedly, I didn't notice an issue before and I'm the lead audio guy at my church. But I don't usually pick RUclips audio apart. Going back and listening to previous episodes, I can hear some things that I would've been trying to fix, but at the same time, the new setup adds more problems. Can they be fixed? Yes, with the right equipment and someone who knows how to use it. Does it require putting these mics directly in front of the presenters? No. These mics are more of a radio mic. They aren't designed to be seen on video, though a lot of low budget RUclips channels like to show them on video to show that they can afford a $350 microphone. For a show like GCN, that has millions of subscribers, putting their presenters on earset mics like a Countryman or a DPA going into wireless beltpacks shouldn't be out of the budget and they would go unnoticed on camera. A lot of TV presenters still use lavaliers, which work well in a studio setup, but could be a problem with as close as the GCN presenters sit together.
Well obviously the best place for the large new microphones is down the front of your shirts -- you'd be much more aero/aeroo and could finish the show in record time. And the cycling tradition I leave behind as often as possible is riding on roads where a lot of people drive vehicles -- give me trails and gravelly forest service roads please!
As a long time listener of the CGN show and with a hobby of audio recording, I can‘t tell any difference in audio quality with these monstrous new mics. Bigger is not necessarily better, when it comes to mics.
Thats interesting, If you compare the audio to last weeks show we do feel there is an improvement - maybe we can play around with placement? Thanks for commenting, we really value the feedback 🙌
As somebody who mostly listens to the show rather than watching it, I think the audio was just fine without the new monstrous mics. The show in GCN En Español still has terrible audio reverb, though. It's like it's filmed inside a metal container.
Can only give the new limited edition shirts a "Nice", as the bike is shown on its non drive side, cranks aren't aligned, doesn't have a chain. So it's just a nice
I was not watching when the youtube video started, and noticed the greatly improved sound quality immediately. I hope you keep it. I agree with comments that say the mic supports are a bit distracting, BUT there are other options that would be far less intrusive. Keep up the great work.
The mics may be for podcasts but for RUclips it looks unprofessional makes the channel look like a bolt on to a podcast and devalues a brilliant channel. All you see is a mic, let’s get rid of them please
New microphones, sound is negligibly different, personally, I think they get in the way and I found the videos much more personable without the microphones, blocking the interaction between yourselves and the viewers….
As an audio engineer: Put two condenser microphones in front of and over your head as close as possible but just out of the frame, pointed at your mouth. Small diaphragm, cardioid polar pattern and good room acoustics provided, this should result in good audio AND good video.
Mic’s sound great, look like SM7Bs. If there’s a concern about their intrusiveness have you tried a Sennheiser MKH416 shotgun mic? You could set it up out of frame and get some decent audio, may split the difference.
Feedback on the microphones. I never thought sound was a problem, and i agree with a comment i saw from someone else who said that it looks like the gcn show is a podcast first, considering you rely fairly heavily on watching clips or pictures I would guess its a podcast second
sounds terrific, Noticed the sound change right away in the intro before looking at the image, and told myself, this is not the GCN show, the intro was kind of mysterious this time if I may. Crisp silence, better small sounds definition, and some kind of equalization or crest prevention If I have to guess, I can hear it all. I did radio, but I'm really not a sound pro, I also have a pretty bad misophonia I don't really address ( 3 your kids at home ) every limiting loud sounds and better definition of small sounds makes a world of difference. I don't like to say it but better sound literally makes me less depressed at the end of the day. Noticed after a minute or two, the sound could be reequalized, for less hissing and more a rich middles and bass tones. If a GCN sound pro is reading.
Agree. The Garmin Varia works just fine. It gives a audible and visible warning to the cyclist and blinks the light for the car. Something about inventing something that already there....
Sound quality was clearly superior and I think we should be doing all we can to support GCN right now in expanding the audience. Keep the great content coming, with or without microphones!
After 10 minutes of watching I didn't notice the microphones as much. The sound is great though! I listen and watch using headphones which sounds amazingly clear now. No issues with the previous setup and you guys are still humorous!
Glad you asked about the mics. From the sound perspective, I noticed no difference. They only obstruct the view of you guys, so, I guess keep the mics, or even get bigger ones

Enjoyed this week’s show on podcast. I half doubted that you guys had a new microphone until I saw it on RUclips. Sound quality was fine, Dan seemed to have a loads of great ideas but I don’t think that’s because of the microphone ;)
Sound is good but visually the mics are distracting or throws the whole scene off. For the podcast, good, but for us YT viewers, not, IMO. Old sound was fine, why the change?
I agree... I never noticed any problems with the audio before... and with their 'fixed camera looking forward' setup, the mics look really strange and distracting!
they do look stupid (the microphones). No shot you have to have them in the frame instead of using a shotgun mic or body packs and lav mics. and if you want a cool mic go for a ribbon one.
Really noticed the mics broke the connection you feel between the viewer and the presenters. Obviously there good reason video / tv shows don’t put mics in front of presenters. Toss the mics they are a bodge
I like the new mics. The sound is a lot fuller. If they are cardioids, you may be limited to having them where they are. But, for the sake of testing, try positioning them above each presenter (boom style) slightly ahead of each presenter but still aimed at their mouths. That way, you could still get good audio (may need to increase gain/trim if the mics are more than 12" from their mouths) and have the mics out of the shot completely. Possibly add a low cut filter so that it doesn't pick up ambient room sounds (HVAC, etc.).
It's more underlying distortion / white noice when you are silent etc. So they need to be configured a bit more. I think they will benefit the podcast alot.
i guess everyone else is listening through their laptop speakers because the audio is noticeably better on good headphones. It's a cycling show, I don't care what device you talk into as long as I can understand you and you continue to talk about bikes.
Sound and vocals on GCN has always been really good, even when you are cycling. The new studio mics give you a little bit of depth, but the big mic stands in front of you is visually not great and they will limit your movements when you are pulling kit out or ringing the bell and generally just mucking about, which is why we love the show.....
Shure SM7s. All the biggest podcasters and RUclipsrs use them now 😏. Make you look far more important and broadcasty 🤩. Seriously though, vastly superior sound quality compared with a personal mic stuck on your chest. Far more glottal and consonantish. Take it from a retired Sound guy. GCN, you're worth it 🥳.
Love the show, but not the new mics. Never had a problem hearing with the old ones and noticed them right away. Also noticed Dan's monsterous "guns" and how the new mics are bigger than Si's water pistol biceps! 😂
Oh, new microphones... Damn, I need to buy my own ASAP, but I may be going for multi-polar ones. 😁 You can do with a bit more unobtrusive configuration, so as to not accidentally hit those. Why not try uploading some Shorts with some good talking points using the current config (as was in the show), and some with additional gain (of course, not to the point of wreaking havoc on your devices and setup)? Could do great, and we'll let you know we viewers hear you better. Miking Ep. 584 with good condenser worked wonders, I tell you.
New mics? Nope. Two problems. 1) The are ridiculous in frame like that. If you must mount them in front of the presenters, you need to reframe the image so it doesn't look like some lunatic grip is leaning in from the side 🙂 2) The sound is 'wrong' The quality is good and would seem right perhaps on an audio only podcast. But it is an odd tone for video.
The irony in us cyclists bemoaning pro microphones for their aesthetics when we welcome the Giro Aero helmets, glasses that look like confused ski goggles and riding with gizmos/Varia devices and phone cockpits. All for the new audio fidelity, kudos gcn.
There is definitely a difference in audio quality. But I’m also an audio engineer so I notice those things. I doubt most people will notice the difference. The audio was still great before. The noise floor is noticeably higher with the new mics. I think the mic stands make it distracting because it makes it much more apparent if the presenters are event spaced and the frame is centered. In this case the presenters are slightly too far right
The new microphones make it sound like you’re talking into a microphone…which oddly enough isn’t good. Without the mic’s you guys sound more like a conversation, with the mic’s it’s like a performance. Bivo has been making metal insulated bottles for a while now. We love then, particularly in the Arizona heat. Check them out ❤ Many E-bikes in the U.S. ride on either sidewalks or multi-use paths where there are pedestrians. I find, as a cyclist and someone who walks a lot, many e-bikers don’t announce a pass or use a bell. They ride fast and too close and weave between people instead of yielding. Of course there are responsible e-bikers but in a town where tourism is high and people with little cycling knowledge rent them for fun it is super dangerous. We do have some bike lanes on the roads but e-bikers mostly use the paths and sidewalks because the cars are aggressive- they don’t realize that they look like. cars to the walkers
2:44 you would expect wider tyres to have more air resistance. The top of the tyre is travelling at twice the speed of the bike and air resistance increases with the square of the speed so this gets more important at higher speeds. Any thoughts?
For commuting - flat pedals are often quicker to get onto than single sided road clips. I'm almost always faster taking off at the traffic lights than roadie commuters with cleats. They generally pass me after they manage to get clipped in of course but then I catch them again at the next set of lights.
you have got to be joking. a definite no to the new mics, they are a huge visual distraction. if you need better sound ( I have not had a problem) there are better solutions.
Si was on fire today! So funny. His odd phobia of cows is one of the reasons o like watching GCN. Cracks me up The microphones do sound very good; smooth sounds DJ esc, “Welcome to the GCN Smooth Sounds”, but do clutter up the view and Si is going to backhand it one of these days.
I just bought one of those steel Camelbak podium bottles to use for zwifting and I love it, no more ingesting the extra microplastics from squeezing bottles and the main part can go in the dishwasher
The Giro helmets are an monstrosity. Free speed in cycling is the bighest joke. Everything is so over priced, and marketing is doing their best at convincing people they need all this crap that only makes their walets lighter. All those "independent" RUclips channels are bought and paid for..
Love the new Shure SM7B microphones! Huge sound improvement over the shotgun you started using a while back instead of the lavaliers. I had complained about before… Now I can now stream the show on my giant LCD TV and pipe the sound through my giant speakers and feel like I’m right there in Studio 7B!
The new microphones deliver a crisp sound, but I suggest mounting them on an AI controlled robotic arm which continuously adjusts them to any ridiculous gestures you care to make. That wouldn't be distracting at all.
What cycling traditions have you broken? 🚲
Or microphone position
Sunglasses inside helmet straps 🤯
Wearing a helmet
The tradition of pointing out things to others which makes one come across as an elitist, snobby roadie.
A wide flat bar with bar ends plus aerobars - instead of a dropbar. The combo seems natural for touring.

Sound and vocals on GCN has always been really good, even when you are cycling. The new studio mics give you a little bit of depth, but the big mic stands in front of you is visually not great and they will limit your movements when you are pulling kit out or ringing the bell and generally just mucking about, which is why we love the show.....
The Microphones say Podcast or Radio Program.
What should we be saying instead? 👀
@@gcn, earset mics would be almost invisible.
I think the belly pouch is a great idea on the back of an old segment you did, proving, that a beer belly was more aero.
I really like the new mikes and you sound even more professional.
❤❤
Thanks for the tips! Great to hear you are a fan of the new improvements 🙌
Love the show, but not the new mics. Never had a problem hearing with the old ones and noticed them right away. Also noticed Dan's monsterous "guns" and how the new mics are bigger than Si's water pistol biceps! 😂
Muscles? GCN presenters? Are you watching us? 😂
Oh, new microphones... Damn, I need to buy my own ASAP, but I may be going for multi-polar ones. 😁
You can do with a bit more unobtrusive configuration, so as to not accidentally hit those.
Are you suggesting that us cyclists aren't the most stylish people ... 👀
@@gcnperhaps, the golden era of style of course being Mario Cipollini's Briko Jumper sunglasses 🕺
Toblerones in you front pocket could save 20 watts !!!
A handy mid ride snack too
New Toblerones or the old ones?
The sound quality is great
We think so 😊
Appreciate it's probably for the podcast but can't say I ever worried about the sound quality
I never noticed an issue with the audio quality either.
In this case the presenters are slightly too far right
hi! Many thanks for the points you have raised 👍
Please lose the mics. Really spoils the look and the sound improvement is about as marginal a gain as missing a spot when shaving
T-shirts spoil the look
The new microphones make it sound like you’re talking into a microphone…which oddly enough isn’t good. Without the mic’s you guys sound more like a conversation, with the mic’s it’s like a performance.
Bivo has been making metal insulated bottles for a while now. We love then, particularly in the Arizona heat. Check them out ❤
Many E-bikes in the U.S. ride on either sidewalks or multi-use paths where there are pedestrians.
High carbs is ok if you are young. It does not end well later on.
2:44 you would expect wider tyres to have more air resistance. The top of the tyre is travelling at twice the speed of the bike and air resistance increases with the square of the speed so this gets more important at higher speeds. Any thoughts?
Where is the subscriber “Welcome to the GCN Show” intro?? Come on guys and gals…..
So happy their gone! Very awkward most of the time
I guess they just can‘t be uploaded
Caption competition: "Second photo finish shows Pogacar just in front of Phillipson"
I find the microphones visually distracting and I kind like the old audio quality better
You like worse quality audio? Considered getting your ears waxed?
For commuting - flat pedals are often quicker to get onto than single sided road clips. I'm almost always faster taking off at the traffic lights than roadie commuters with cleats. They generally pass me after they manage to get clipped in of course but then I catch them again at the next set of lights.
you have got to be joking. a definite no to the new mics, they are a huge visual distraction. if you need better sound ( I have not had a problem) there are better solutions.
Next fantastic upgrade in pro cycling: EPO's with awesome masking agents
Finally!!! You no longer sound like you're filming in the WC!! 😂
🎤🚽😂
Si was on fire today! So funny. His odd phobia of cows is one of the reasons o like watching GCN. Cracks me up
The microphones do sound very good; smooth sounds DJ esc, “Welcome to the GCN Smooth Sounds”, but do clutter up the view and Si is going to backhand it one of these days.
Keep the microphones.
They look silly but sound good. We'll get used to them.
Thanks Dan , Si , and crew...I like the mike..
Whats with the mics? Yes. They look stupid.
I just bought one of those steel Camelbak podium bottles to use for zwifting and I love it, no more ingesting the extra microplastics from squeezing bottles and the main part can go in the dishwasher
realistically the vast majority of microplastics you're consuming while on the bike are from aerosolized rubber particles from car tires
The mics remind me of Lance’s channel The Move ! No need for them sound was fine before
The sound quality of the new microphones IS better, but I find them a bit intrusive to the presentation.
You really don’t need those microphones 😂😂
But Dan said that they would produce a "warm deep sound, that is a joy to listen to"
🤔nope
The Giro helmets are an monstrosity. Free speed in cycling is the bighest joke. Everything is so over priced, and marketing is doing their best at convincing people they need all this crap that only makes their walets lighter. All those "independent" RUclips channels are bought and paid for..
Microphones look stupid with no improvement in sound.
Thanks! We love them too, that sound is oh so crisp 👌
Microphones are a disaster, get rid of them, very distracting. It's a NO from me 😕
Mics sound great! You could hide Dan’s mini cable just like Si’s
ah yes! Makes a change for Si to be the tidy one of the pair! 😂
The new microphones deliver a crisp sound, but I suggest mounting them on an AI controlled robotic arm which continuously adjusts them to any ridiculous gestures you care to make. That wouldn't be distracting at all.
The sound is great!
New sound was buttery soft and the range on the deep end was better. Very professional.
🤭
The podcasts always sound clear on Spotify, so not sure if the mic is necessary. Love both platforms and enjoyed the Manon video.
