What's the point of the transformation? It looks like he decided to sit down in a chair lol. I haven't seen the anime.

In zeta Gundam everything transforms

So it can fly while most of the outer armor covers the MS. Only a certain amount of beam cannons are exposed while in flight mode giving it some defensive capability.
