Throwing An Extra Large 18 lb Platter on the Potter's Wheel - Part 1

  • In this video, I demonstrate taking two balls of clay, each around 9 lbs, and center the first, then apply the second ball to the top of the centered and ribbed first one and continue to center. This is a great trick to center very large pieces of clay with a bit less energy than might otherwise be required. Especially if you have physical limitations of strength!
    After the form is thrown in this video, I allowed it to dry slowly, over a few days to get evenly leatherhard so I could trim it.
    I am using an 18" Plastibat (from Amaco) and Laguna B-Mix with grog cone 5. My very noisy wheel is an old Thomas Stuart wheel. It works fine... just a bit noisy!
    This video is only the first of two videos on completing the platter. The second video I will use a Giffin Grip Jumbo Platter attachment- it is a large slotted piece which fits on top of the Giffin Grip with it's own extension arms. Here is the link to the trimming video- Part 2-

    HI Karen, would you like to share how and when you cut the plate from the bat ? I found your demo so interesting and usefull, and would like to Thank you so much. It gives me plenty of positive vibes to continue throwing large porcelain plates, only better than before 💋

      Hello! I cut the platter or anything really immediately after I throw. As it begins to dry, I have to recut it again. Usually after 24 and again after 48 hours as it will re-stick itself! :) . I have another video on trimming that one if you want to see it! I think the link is in the video description...

    Lovely! How thick did you leave the base?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  7 лет назад

      mbf211 I'd guess the base was 1/2" - 5/8" - enough where I could still trim a foot and not make it too thin!!

    Could you do some porcelain and explain from wedging to pulling. Pressures used etc. I can’t find much on this. I am about three years in learning. And have ventured out trying porcelain and really like it but keeping centered. And tops wobbling are a problem. But I am progressing on my own. HELP TEACH. AHHAAH

    Curious on why you compress a platter of all things with a sponge instead of a rib? With 18 pounds of clay that platter should be a good 27 plus across, yes (it’s a suspended form so you need the clay at the foot. But there are 900 ways of doing this so curious as to why you do it this way? Was also curious why you don’t use the inner and outer ribs so it keeps your platter even and straight on the rim?

      Hi Jason- I emphasize to my kids there are multiple ways of doing things and I encourage them to seek out other potters who show things slightly different for greater depth of knowledge. Sometimes I show the rib compression, sometimes I don't. I guess in this one I just didn't get around to it, or just chose not too. Not sure, I made this over 4 years ago. I am going to assume your comment was meant as you said "curious" rather than outright critical. (although is it hard to read it that way) Creating a 27" wide platter is dependent on many things. The strength of the particular clay body, how soft the clay is, how much of an upsweep/vertical rise there is, and how deep the foot is. None of the choices I made when throwing this form with this clay would result in the 27" to which you refer. I choose to show my kids how to trim a deep foot with an undercut for hanging on a wall. (That is the follow up video) I probably didn't show the ribs because I wanted my kids to know how to do it without the ribs first... my kids are high school beginners. Sometimes introducing a rib to them is so difficult for them, that they can destroy their forms. Yes, there are 900 ways of doing this... so, the way I showed is one of those possible ways. ( And, it worked, btw... ) :). Keep in mind, I am a full- time high school teacher trying to pass along my love of clay to my students, and give a little enrichment to others while I'm at it...

    Looking at this massive platter on my 18" bat and have no idea how to trim it. When is part 2 coming? Thank you for sharing!

      Christine Smith lol!!! I just have been uploading it today! I had to leave the house while it was uploading- so as soon as I get home it should be done and I can click "publish"! I was hoping it would upload faster and would have been able to publish it this afternoon, but my Internet is sometimes a snails pace!

      Ok, Christine... I came home and found it is still only 49% uploaded in 8 hours... SO... I am going to restart my computer and try it again... hopefully it will be done by morning! I'll send you a link when it is!

    how do you make the clay more placticy then when it comes out of the bag?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  6 лет назад

      Hi Sherry- if you slice the clay into thin slices, douse them in water, and put back in the bag for a day, it should become more plastic over night! :)

    How much would you charge for this?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  5 лет назад

      Hi Karen- the final glaze would be a big determining factor... (some glaze techniques are just more expensive, of course!) but, with just basic glaze, I would approximate something like $80. That of course, includes the overhead costs of selling it at a show with entry fee, or comission for gallery, or online posting.
