  • A demonstration of throwing a large platter on the potter's wheel, taken from my recent Crystalline glaze workshop at Dunedin Fine Arts Center in Florida in February 2016.
    Many thanks to Carl Leisegang for filming throughout the weekend and providing some of the footage used for this video.

    Brilliant video Matt :) I too would put loads of grooves when trimming, as you say, reduces weight and lessens the chances of cracking.
    I also leave a small raised circle in the middle when trimming that can help avoid the plate sinking when firing.
    By the way, love your Kentish accent! I am also a Kentish man :)
    I also use a blowtorch on every pot, mostly to enable me to lift any pot off the wheel head, EVEN plates. My fav tool is my blowtorch. I never use bats.
