- One word to describe Artie Shaw, clarinetist and popular big band leader of swing music from the 1930s and 1940s, might be turbulent. One of the first songs recorded by Artie Shaw and His Orchestra was the Cole Porter song “Begin the Beguine.”

It was never going to go well for Artie Shaw. He was an artist who was also, unfortunately, a purist and an absolutist. He was about the music and only the music. "I could never understand why people wanted to dance to my music. I made it good enough to listen to." Yes, he did.
As for Benny Goodman, I will always be grateful I was privileged to hear him in concert toward the end of his life. He was a superb performer, as delighted to play for us as we were to hear him play.
But he was no Artie Shaw.
Great channel. Joe Pass?
stay tuned!
