  • So much is made of Joe Bonamassa’s & Eric Johnson’s picking technique. Whilst this is a great technique, should we all use it? Or should we try and play those fast pentatonic runs in our own style? 🤔

Beginner player question: wouldnt picking every note give it a more pronounced sound?

It would probably give the sound more articulation buddy yes. I think the idea of this video is it’s not the law to do things a certain way. Many ways to skin a cat!

@@GregDaviesguitarist understood, its currently my method for accuracy, thanks for the quick reply

@@Jakevoss96 I think sometimes guitar players focus to heavily on getting the exact technique as their heroes. I remember Joe Bonamassa himself saying his legato is terrible so he pick’s everything. I think the most important focus should be playing to your physical potential 👍🎸

On picking every note: My personal opinion is that we don't have to do anything and that the best things to do are what works for you. The worst things I did to my playing on any instrument was to listen to someone tell me I had to correct something.

The worst thing I did was spend 45 years not listening to ANYONE.

@@NiqScott That's worse for sure, but another important point. Mine was just about things like if you have to pick every note or not, how you have to hold a pick, how your hand has to be placed on the neck, etc... You need to learn and get input too, but I would not try to conform to anyone's rules. Information is vital, but what you do with it, even more so.
I edited to add clarity to my original statement.

@@RickHavok Oh absolutely, I couldn't agree more, but I don't think Greg was saying "You MUST do it MY way" - although I don't think that's what you were inferring.

@@NiqScott I'm a huge fan of Greg's playing and guitar philosophy and didn't for a second mean that comment as even a disagreement. Greg clearly posed it as a question, most likely inferring that it was unecessary. I was agreeing and elaborating. I sensed in your reply that my comment might be misconstrued, so I edited it to try to clarify that. Sorry for the confusion.
There are times when every note should be picked for impact, but its not always necessary, and if that clashes with your style you can try to change it, or just play things that don't require it. I'd rather focus on my strengths myself. That's my only point.

I think it’s important to a select one or two people who can play how you want to play. The rest is noise. Get your foundations correct. This is so important. Without great foundation you will never get to where you want to go.
