  • This is an audio tribute for Disneyland Country Bear Jamboree, meant to be a full, original show shortly after 1972 opening. Actually, the date I've uploaded this video is March 4 2022, which is significant because the attraction, and surrounding land Bear Country, opened exactly 50 years ago today in 1972. Happy 50th birthday to this classic Disneyland attraction! Although I haven't had very many videos on the Country Bear show in my channel thus far, I still consider it a really fantastic audio animatronics spectacle which was one of the best attractions on its side of Disneyland as well as my third favorite show in any Disney theme park (behind Tiki Room & Carousel of Progress). I also hate that they replaced it with what I think is a very subpar Winnie the Pooh dark ride after it's very sad closure in 2001. I was born a few years after closure and haven't been to Walt Disney World, so I actually havent seen it in person, but been in love with it since a young age. When I was infant/toddler, I actually liked the Pooh ride because of the still great characters and music, as well as that I didn't know about Country Bears until ~4-5. (And I couldn't see any of it's flaws due to being so young) But I learned about and came to love the Country Bear shows, and ever since I've held it highly among the many past and present Disneyland attractions. I haven't cared much for the Pooh ride in many years, and have come to resent it for replacing Country Bears. The original concept for a Country Bear show actually dates back to 1966 (shortly before Walt passed), when Disney planned a ski resort titled Mineral King, with singing bears to entertain in a dinner show. One of Walt's last meetings with Imagineers was to look at concept art for the bears. When viewing the bears, Walt laughed hysterically, and it was remembered as one of if not the last time he ever laughed like that, since sadly he passed a few weeks later. Some legal problems made it impossible to build Mineral King, but Disney decided to reuse the bears for the new Walt Disney World Frontierland (Florida). It opened to massive success on 10/1/1971, and at the same time Disney was already working on a copy at Disneyland. This version had a whole new land around it called Bear Country, a detailed recreation of a rural late 1800's American Northwestern town. In addition to E Ticket show, there was the Golden Bear Lodge (now Hungry Bear) and Mile Long Bar restaurants, a couple shops (including Indian Trading Post, reused from the previous Indian Village), Teddi Barras Swingin Arcade, and nice new land at Disneyland, some of which (besides Country Bears) survives as Critter Country today. The first two minutes of the video has Western music and several pictures of Bear Country, beginning with sign and cave of snoring bear Rufus, followed by some buildings and rare 1972 picture of the nice covered bridge entrance for Country Bear Jamboree (reused for Pooh). Not all pictures here are 1972, but all are 1972-75 or undated (probably 70's). Sadly I couldn't find any other pictures of queue or waiting area, so after the attraction poster we go inside theater & Max, Buff, and Melvin tell Henry to start the show. Henry is the leader of the cast, in most acts, & initially introduces us to the show and its pianist Gomer. He plays nice solo and joined by Five Bear Rugs for Bear Band Serenade. Already, there's great sounding country music as Zeke, Zed, Ted, Fred, and Tennessee give a taste of whats to come. Next is Wendell, playing 2 acts with Henry. The first, Fractured Folk Song, is followed by Liver Lips, his guitar & My Woman Ain't Pretty. Some songs are kinda sad, (especially the next act, Henry and Wendells Mama Don't Whip Little Buford), but they're still whimsical enough to be fun. Next is another very nice sounding song, Trixies Tears Will Be the Chaser For Your Wine. Then is the first return of 5 Bear Rugs, where Zeke sings Pretty Little Devilish Mary. Next is shaker Terrance, with How Long Will My Baby Be Gone, then the Sun Bonnets singing All The Guys That Turn Me On Turn Me Down. Though some songs are dark many can also be relatable and all instrumentals are beautiful. Then Bear Rugs return and now joined by Ernest as they perform If You Can't Bite, Don't Growl. Then Teddi Barra lowers her swing to sing Heart We Did All That We Could, before Big Al gives Blood on the Saddle. Personally these two are my favorite bears, even if I love them all. After, Henry and raccoon Sammy start singing Ballad of Davy Crockett, which Big Al interrupts with another Blood on the Saddle. The entire cast then drowns him out with a fantastic Ole Slew Foot, which along with Come Again are the last acts. Then exit music plays, with rare 70's exit picture and a couple more of Mile Long Bar. I really love this show and I hope you enjoy my tribute!
I do not own any audio or images used in this video. All audio owned by Disney, & all images owned by Disney, Daveland, and other sources.

LOVED THIS. They never shoulda perm changed it to the Vacation Hoedown in '86. That's when the attendance started dropping.

I actually like Vacation and Christmas shows, but do agree that the original was easily the best of the three, should NEVER have been removed in 86 and removing it entirely in 01 was an even bigger mistake IMO. And I absolutely and clearly hear many people clapping, laughing and having a great time in any 80's videos I've seen of the original at Disneyland and WDW, but haven't heard quite as much in the Vacation videos.

what they *SHOULD* have done is left one theater as the original when "Vacation" debuted and only changed it out at Christmas along with the other theater. that way for the bulk of the year, guests could have chosen which show they wanted to see.

@@disneydanny2 This is a great idea. They definitely should have done either that, or the Tokyo strategy of cycling the shows through the year

Glad the show is still around in Florida at least but I regret not seeing the original longer version of the show in person. I know some people like the current shorter version just fine calling it streamlined but I feel as if it's lost some magic around that refurbishment.
Thanks for documenting this version of the show. Means the world to me and many people. :D

I'm so glad you enjoyed and that it means so much to so many! And I agree with everything else you said as well. I am glad it still exists in Florida (and Tokyo), but I really wish they never butchered Florida version in the 2012 refurbishment as it really isn't as good and not the same. And I also really wish they never took it out of California either, since I live closer to DL than WDW and never saw it in person either, which is definitely a shame!

Very well done! This was my childhood ❤️ We’d enjoy The country bear jamboree, then stop for a sarsaparilla at the mile long bar. So fun!

Thank you! I think this was a lot of people's childhood, including my parents and (though I was born after closing) myself as well. Though I wasn't able to see it in person I've loved it for a long time and can clearly see why so many others do as well. And that sounds so fun, again I wish I could do that!

I love the final black and white photo of the mile long bar. It shows two of the trophies at the top. These are the versions of Max, Buff, and Melvin that are in Disneyland’s Winnie the Pooh ride just after the Heffalump room which features Winnie the Pooh in the contraption that lowered Teddy Barra into the show (now a hot air balloon) 🎈

Yeah me too. I haven't seen more than probably 4 or 5 pictures inside Mile Long bar, but it seems like a nice place especially with the trophies. And I think I also read somewhere how those versions are in the Winnie the Pooh ride, as well as the Teddi Barra contraption which is fascinating.

In the near future, I hope that you’ll be able to visit WDW so that you can watch the Country Bear Jamboree and the Carousel of Progress in person. I haven’t got to Disneyland yet, but I’ve watched this show around 50 times ever since my family and I moved to Florida earlier this year. 😅

I'm sorry this took so long to reply to, I really appreciate your support! I also hope to go to WDW in the next few years, even though the shortened original show is going away next year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the new show will live up to the others. If you haven't seen the Adventureland Treehouse at Disneyland yet, it gives me hope that Imagineering can still sometimes produce great things. I hope I can go to WDW in the near future as well, especially to see things like PeopleMover, Carousel of Progress, Country Bears, small world with no characters, Spaceship Earth and much of World Showcase, as well as walking thru the Contemporary and Polynesian resorts (I know I can't afford to stay there any time soon). I'm glad you still get to have these great characters at Walt Disney World, and I still wish for their return at Disneyland.

Personally I didn't think it was that bad, although I do think some sections need major work. I wasn't a fan of the execution of Kiss the Girl, Whole New World, Try Everything, and Fixer Upper, and the latter two are indeed a terrible fit. I don't know anyone who even remembers Fixer Upper, but they HAD to stick frozen in somewhere. (BOO!!) I also think they could have come up with something more creative than a bunch of Disney IP songs, but Iger does not allow that because he is indeed obsessed with jamming as much IP as possible in the parks. And the new show needs more humor! Remember Me, though I think it is a good fit for Big Al, lacks the impact of Blood on the Saddle. On the other hand, I think the other songs work relatively well for this kind of show. I actually really enjoyed the new original song, and the new queue props. Glad Come Again is still around too. It is a trillion times better than the other Disney approved option which was to remove the Bears entirely for a generic IP mess, such as the rumored Toy Story Marionette show. I also would take the new show at Disneyland any second of my life over that Winnie the Pooh ride. The original was definitely better though.
