- The story of Zelda's greatest sidequest: reuniting Anju and Kafei.
Majora's Mask sees Link trapped in Termina, a land which will be destroyed in three days as the moon falls. Using the Song of Time, he can reset time to relive these last three days over and over; he can learn the schedules of Termina's characters, and how to heal their woes.

Thanks for watching! If Anju & Kafei's quest ISN'T your favourite Zelda side quest, let me know what is!
while anju & kafei do have an incredible story, i really love a different long quest: hudson & tarrey town.
like anju & kafei, it involves a lot of people and completing a myriad of quests beforehand. buying the house in hateno, meeting hudson again in akkala, and not only helping him gather building matetial but also finding various -sons around hyrule. the goron brothers that carve out space for housing and shops. the rito who wants to run his own shop. the gerudo tailor wanting more outside of the desert and maybe find a husband.
and she does, with she and hudson falling for each other and wanting to marry. but they need an officiant. enter the last -son, a zora priest who wants to officiate at least one more wedding. and he enjoys tarrey town so much after the ceremony, he stays to run the town inn.
it's got no bearing on the main plot, but it's a beautiful sequence. in one place, link can help bring together the peoples of hyrule in a new life after the calamity. and i love that totk continues it, showing that not only are those -sons still there, but the town has grown more and hudson and rhondson even have their own young daughter.
and sure, not everyone "remembers" between games, but at least hudson and rhondson do, which i appreciate.
toilet guy quest (trust)
RUclips's doing the thread thing now. It's scaring me, Zeltik. Haha.
I always enjoyed the Romani Ranch sidequest the most.
Oh, structurally it's one of the best. Mechanically probably the most intricate in the whole series, and absolutely thematically beautiful.
But the one I personally like most is Konde from echoes of wisdom, because i was going through a bad time and a little high on mushrooms and after seeing him just trying so hard to be good, when his brother comes back in the end credits, i was /weeping/.
It was an experience.
"We'll greet the morning... together."
Man, this game has impacted me in a way no other game ever has.
yeah that kind of love is certainly an aspiration....
That they know whats coming, know they cant escape, yet choose to face it together is so painfully sweet - we wont make it out alive, but we'll be together in the end.
Its tragic yet beautiful
This side quest is so hauntingly beautiful, it really makes majoras mask such an impactful title that other games in the series just can’t match
I see you’re part of the cult, too. Worshiping a game with broken controls and artificial difficulty.
@@rjgaynor8let me guess, Starfield player?
What kind of inscurity does it take to just... attempt to demean random people online for liking something? Hope you find a more stable place in life. O.o
@ no. I just can’t stand the people that swear MM is the greatest game of all time. It’s not. Every MM fan has damn near cult like devotion to the game.
@@TrueWolves lol defending the cult of Majora? I will never endingly bash that game because of the ridiculous pedestal its fans put it on.
It's definitely the most intricate quest ever put into the Zelda series. You especially have to appreciate how it ties in to practically every other character and side quest in the game; the fact that practically every character in Termina has some tangential connection to either Anju and Kafei - and has an opinion of some kind on Kafei's disappearance - is particularly impressive. Absolutely a favorite of mine.
finding octorok reviews here is cool, love your videos
That was a great Valentine's special and Anju & Kafei quest is the best from Majora's Mask!
the craziest part being that the game features at least one more quest which is romance based... you could tell it was on the authors' minds at the time.
I always thought this was such a special and unique side quest.
Honestly, I never realized how many details were involved with the background of the story if you don’t complete the quest properly. 25 years of it being one of my favorite games of all time and I’m still learning something new!
100%. This is the sidequest that really solidified Majoras Mask as my favorite game of all time. A sidequest that includes multiple characters that you'll find and help in the world that ends with an emotional reunion between lovers in the very last minutes before the world ends. Words cannot describe how I felt waiting for Kafei in the Inn, hearing the final hours song in the background. It was an experience that I'll never forget, and that feeling was intensified at the very end of the game when you solve all of the people's problems and see the happy ending we wanted for the people of Termina.
It's my all time favorite too. It's just such a gorgeous game. Not perfect but it is a peerless masterpiece.
This and the Romani's Ranch side quest were the best in the game! Glad to see you make a vid about it!
As a young kid who played MM on release day for the N64, this quest confounded me more than the temples! And is so memorable for that fact.
The fact that every sidequest in MM has a connection to the main plot in some way or another, is truly an impeccable work of storytelling and world-building.
Anju's and Kafei's being the one with a plethora of connections to different characters and their fate.
I love when sidequests go together with the plot of the game. It feels immersive and natural. Plenty of games do this, but not with all their sidequests.
I had no idea there was a scene for if players helped Kafei get his mask but never gave Anju the pendent! Amazing that the game designers actually considered this as possibility and accounted for it, made all the more impressive given the quick turn-around they were given for working on the game.
Another tale from the Zelda lore master. Fantastic, as always!
My favorite things about the Majoras Mask sidequests is how they bring out the some of the hidden themes in the game, Hope and Community. They show off the theme of Hope and healing in how you, the player as Link, are helping them and giving them hope and satisfaction in there final days as the moon starts falling, helping them find the best in life before it ends. You help Anju and Kafei find solace in each other right before there deaths, you help Darmani ease his regrets after dying, you help Mikau save his eggs after he dies trying. You give them all a small bit of happiness and healing in a time when things could not be worse off for them.
The other theme is Community, in the side quests, you have to help the people around town with there issues, often with others and how they interact with each other. Link helps them reconnect and find a small bit of happiness with each other, as they come to appreciate the things and people they have in life right before it seems its about to end. I think it can also be connected to Link, the Hero of Time variant, who didn't really have anyone or purpose in life after OoT, with everyone he met throughout the adventure in OoT leaving him, and only knowing to set off looking for the one person he still felt connected to. I think, through helping the people in Termina, Link comes to have a greater apprecation for life afterwards, seeing all the people being together as a community and finding happiness in what they have. I think at the end of Majoras Mask, he gets a greater apprecation for life, and is able to move on from his past trauma in OoT, and start a Dawn of a New Day in his life, but thats just my thoughts.
The best side quest in all of Zelda. I remember the first time and watching the clock winding down…..and he hadn’t arrived. I kept thinking “come on come on”.
And then he did. They got married and promised to welcome the dawn ........Together
If there is one thing that I've learned from all my time playing Majora's Mask, it's that this is one of the few games that I've ever played that I _always_ try to do everything. Get 100% completion. Why? Because of the evironment, story, and atmosphere that the game writes as you progress.
Majora's Mask does an excellent job of making you _feel_ like you can connect with the people of Termina. They have the same appearances as familiar faces from Ocarina of Time, but in a way that hits much much harder. With the impending threat of the Moon crashing down and the end of the world being so close, you as a hero are hard-pressed to try and do your duty to help _everyone._
But... this one quest does the opposite. Even if you try your hardest, you _can't_ help everyone; unfortunately also a true statement in real life. To fully progress this quest, it hinges on *allowing Sakon to rob the Bomb Shop owner on Night 1.* If you _do_ come to her rescue, *you stall the rest of the quest and doom Kafei and Anju to their fates* and have to start over from the morning of Day 1 to try again. ...I constantly wish it didn't have to be like this, even if we have the ability to master time itself to repeat the same three days and do things over. Even so, this one detail still sticks with me to this day.
For a master of time travel, like Link, sometimes sacrifices have to be made in order to help everyone. Sometimes events must be left to play out as fate intended even if we don't like the outcome. But still, we press on, because we know that a good outcome will be there waiting for us at the end if we succeed.
But it doesn't make it hurt any less. ..."Can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs", after all.
truly great story telling deserves that treatment.
truly, no good deed goes unpunished
Not only a new upload from Zeltik, but about one of the best side quests of all time? What a good Friday to be sick in bed haha
Feel better soon
Can I have your bug catching net?
Man I just love your videos dude. You singlehandedly ignite the Zelda fire in my soul. Every upload. Thank you man
Everytime I play MM, I always try to make this the last quest before going to the Moon.
I will make it so they can see the morning together
Love it when I see a new upload of Zeltik.
Discovering this stuff at 10 years old was wild. Definitely left a lasting impact on me.
I’ll never forget watching my brother do this side quest as a kid. It’s one of my favorite memories to this day from our childhood.
15:19 I NEVER KNEW YOU CAN MAKE THE BOMB THIEF BLOW UP!!!
I didn’t even know you could get the sun mask back without giving Kafeis pendant to Anju, that’s heartbreaking.
Watching this makes me feel like I want a sequel to Majora’s Mask, not in a sense that it’d be that fabled third Zelda game for the hero of time that never happened, but more like a follow up on Majora’s mask itself, focusing on characters, and the locations future and possibly adding either a new bad guy to take down in Termina or another Ganon, because you know the Zelda devs just love em some Ganon.
I'd love that, especially since it would mean that the idea that Termina is just a magic illusion and everyone in it stopped existing after the end of the game would be proven wrong.
17:30 Actually if I remember you don't technically have to choose one or the other, if you're quick enough about it you can bring the leter directly to Madam, then hightail it over to the postman and give it to him so that he can deliver it
I think she takes the letter when she gives you the bottle, but I will have to double check
@@OtakuUnitedStudio Hmm, i vaguely remember being able to do it
I'm so happy you tackled this story. Even as a kid this story hit me like no other. My mother didn't really like me playing games and what not, but when I showed her this game, at the time, I was tackling this story. When I described what was happening and connecting the dots, she had me play it out. I was at the point of taking the Goron Link's room. My mother was hooked on the story. She was always a sap for love stories. She sat with me and watched me engage in problem solving and reading comprehension.
She saw how complex the game truly was and noticed I was learning quite a few skills. Like the memory retention you mentioned. We sat for hours till the big pay off. Anju and Kafei married. It brought some tears to her eyes. This game is special to me in more ways than one.
Just commenting to support the channel because I feel joyous snd whimsy :) Thanks for doing this it made me really happy
I was just explaining to my friend who's too scared to play Majora's Mask how amazing this sidequest is. I'm so happy I can show this masterpiece of a video to them!
Zeltik, your storytelling ability is truly unmatched. I’ve played this game and done these questlines multiple times, but they’ve never hit as hard as when you’re describing them here. Well done.
I 100% this game and remember the side quest way back in the day. If you show the mask to the Mask Salesman he will comment on how much work you put in to get it. And if you show it to the mayor while he he is settling the argument with the carpenter and captain guard, he gives you a heart piece... (I think)
Majoras mask was my first zelda game and this quest was impactful even when i played in 2000 but has meant so much more to me now that im in my 30's. Easily one of the best side quests ever made and probably one of the longest quests out side of the trading quests of windwaker
What a perfect timing for this video! I just finished the game again yesterday on my PC with HD textures. I made sure to finish the game only after obtaining 100% of itens, then i proceeded to go on a final cycle where i wrap Anju & Kafei quest, helped Malon and Cremia and beat all for bosses for the most accurate best ending of this masterpiece of a game!
Since Kafei and the Curiosity Shop owner are friends, I bet he scammed Sakon as payback.
This quest has so many memories for me when I was a kid. I had no guidebook and our family didn't have internet yet to Google any help, so I spent like a month and a half figuring this whole quest out and finally doing all of it on my own was so great lol
fuck man so many outcomes and this is get crazier every time! I love it, it's historical for videogames
How did you know I was binging Zelda lore videos lol
Best sidequest in zelda by a MILE. I also appreciate this video showing all the little things that happen surrounding it, including the bad endings and some stuff I otherwise missed in my many playthroughs. Love it
This here is the exact reason why MM is my absolute favorite Zelda game. The level of interactions is outstanding and you build a connection to the characters yourself. I remember being so proud to have figured out how to help Anju & Kafei. I love it so very much.
I was 11 or 12 when i beat this quest on the n64, it was at like 2am and i was playing ( instead of being asleep) and im not kidding i cried, straight up. It was beautiful. Im 34 now i still can remember that moment.
Why do Zeltik narratives always bring tears to my eyes?
Majora's mask is really one kind of a game, the fact that every NPC has their own daily routine and events/quests happening during the 3 days cycle while being able to go back in time to re-live those 3 days is an incredible experience.
19:40 technically there is no child there, we have adult link in a child body and Kafei, an adult in a child body....
It is wild how much attention to detail MM has… it’s amazing to just observe what happens with the people throughout the world. Everything has meaning and an impact, and it all connects in a crazy, intricate, beautiful web. Which is why it’s my favorite Zelda game of all time
how does this sidequest manage to make me cry every time, no matter how many times i complete this game
My favorite side quest of my favorite game, and easily this is now my favorite video of your chanel. Thanks for this beautiful work!
Ohh, I really liked this one, Zeltik. I actually got a little choked up when you showed the wedding bit in the credits after discussing the whole quest up to it.
I always forget how incredibly detailed MM is as I'm normally thinking about OOT first when I think Zelda, but both games are such an excellent duology, you can't have one without the other.
Even as a kid I remember doing this side quest in Majoras Mask and after finishing it , it had an impact on me I really felt a relief after finishing it like I really brought them together. Years after years of playing Zelda games no side quest ever topped this one . Love your videos and how detail you are with them it reminded me of so many things I had forgotten.
This is by far my favorite Zelda title. Maybe it just came out at the right time, but love this game.
you know when it’s a good day when zeltik post and when it’s mm it’s even better (also good vid keep up the work)
Thank you, Zeltik! What a lovely sidequest story, and so beautifully told by you!
I've never played this game, and so of course hadn't heard of Anju & Kafei before now. Fascinating!
It is precisely this kind of emotional complexity and attention to detail that make majora’s mask such a special game and experience. sometimes i feel like BOTW dethroned it as my favorite zelda title, but things like this make contemplate whether it still might be #1.
As far as I’m concerned, when it comes to Zelda games as a whole, Majora’s Mask just can’t be beaten. The side quests, the gameplay, the world, the music, the characters, the story. All of it is top notch. My second favourite game of all time
This was one of the first times I cried over a video game. It remains as my favorite side quest in ANY game I’ve ever played. Amazing video, you captured the essence of this side quest perfectly
Majora's Mask had been my favorite Zelda game, even my favorite video game ever, and I always had this love & hate relationship with this quest, because it is so beautiful, but still painful to do no matter how many times I replay MM.
Love how it can make for a "complicated" side quest without just being a really long string of fetch quests and trading segments
Majoras mask was my first zelda game i beat, and this quest absolutely stuck with me well after finishing the game. It just felt so rewarding to have gone through all that effort, which may not have affected the outcome if you don't have the fierce deity mask, but it's that satisfaction that makes it so perfect and memorable
Always loved this side quest
And their wedding in the credits seals the deal. You really made an impact the characters remember this time (in oot no one knows what you did)
There is so much more substance to this entire story and its characters than I ever knew, playing the game as an 11-year-old. The Stock Pot Inn being a former cafe, the mother's husband etc
Wow. I didn't realize this sidequest was that involved. I never considered talking to anyone else with Kafei's mask once I saw who to use it for. I didn't know how much detail was packed in. This makes me appreciate it even more.
Incredible analysis. What an interesting insight into the deeper lives and emotions of so many people who we call “side characters”, but who really together make up the whole of Link’s motivation-saving the innocent who would otherwise be helpless against the impending doom.
I am reminded of another RUclipsr who, when talking about Gravity Falls, pointed out that nearly every fan of the series held ONE particular moment in high regard-- that there was so much discussion and fan art about it.
And I have often thought that for Zelda, that moment must be the Anju and Kafei sidequest.
Majoras Mask has been my favorite Zelda game for as long as I can remember, since I played it all the way back in like, 2007-2008 on the N64. I have since 100 percented it countless times (I refuse to ever finish MM without 100 percenting it), and know almost everything there is to know about the game. However, your amazing video made me realize I never actually investigated what happens if you don't do certain things in the sidequest. All these pieces of unique dialogue I missed because I already know the quest like the back of my hand and couldn't think of a reason to let it sit. I probably did when I was a kid so that I could *learn* how to do the quest, but I unfortunately don't actually remember my first experiences with the game, so it may as well be I have always known. I will absolutely have to look into this again when I play MM next, and thank you so much for gracing us with this awesome video. The interviews with Koizumi and Aonuma were so awesome; I knew a lot went into the initial year long development of this game, but the fact Aonuma drew so much from his real life experiences is awesome to me.
(anyway this comment will probably get buried lol but I at least wanted to express how I loved this video)
any video about Majora's Mask is my comfort video. its by far my favorite game, I could replay it an infinite number of times T_T
Can we just stop to appreciate how intricate and connected these npc's are from a game where the developers had a 1 year time crunch. I feel like we've not had much of a Zelda game that has had this level of a side quest again even though they have longer development time. Not to mention the overall atmosphere of the town and npc's going through this 3 day cycle of wanting to celebrate, or flee.
Majora's Mask has been making me feel profound emotions since I was like 10. I remember using the gorman mask to emote because I couldn't cry IRL without getting in trouble. This isn't just my favorite zelda game, but my favorite game of all time. This particular sidequest still makes my breath catch in my chest.
This is such an amazing video. Thank you! I love this Sidequest. In my opinion it is the best in the series!
Man, what a game. I love what it does so, so much.
Anju and Kafei really showcase what makes Majora's Mask so good
Definitely my favorite MM quest! I always make sure I do a run-through of at least the main Anju and Kafei parts on my last trip through the 3-day cycle, before heading to the moon. I have to do something anyway, and that gets the couple the happiest result.
This side quest is so emotional and well detailed. Props to the developers for creating this amazing side quest and sharing it how it came into existence with their real life experience!!! Btw, great video Zeltik!!!
We need something similar for the next zelda... what a masterpiece that game is
I love how deep and involved this story is. Easy to see why I rounded off my playthrough of this game as a kid with it.
I've been thinking about this for like 20 years. I played this game in a really weird way and for some reason the game let me. There is nothing like the original Majora's Mask out there. This game gave me real memories of a real adventure. It's very inspiring.
The postman takes his job WAAAAAYYYYYYY too seriously
There are few careers throughout history more noble, valued, and respected than delivering the post.
I've never played Majora's Mask but watching Zeltik's content about it, it really feels like a game way before it's time.
Majora's Mask is possibly the greatest game ever made.
One of the main reasons Majora's Mask is my favorite zelda game. When i first played it i was very young and couldnt really get very far and never finished it. When i grew up and became a teenager i was able to understand it more and complete the game. i then played it again to get all the masks and complete all the dode quests. With admittedly some help from online sources. Such a great story inside the main story itself. And the little side story IN the side story of anju and Cremia is just more greatness.
Best Zelda Quest of all time, every time I complete it after collecting everything in the game, I head straight to the Moon.
These are just some of the examples of why this game is amazing! And why this franchise overall is just so good at storytelling when it gets a chance
It's been over 20 years since I've played this game but I still think about this quest. Watching this video gave me chills, thank you.
Despite playing through the game nearly a dozen times over the past fifteen years or so, the story of the Postman if you never intervene is actually something I never knew until this video. I never thought to look into his story past the Piece of Heart you can get to him on the First Day. That's an incredible attention to detail, and one of the reasons I love this game so much. They really went all out on the little details in the short development time this game had.
I remember finishing this side quest for the first time in the 3ds version. The music as they held each other as they knew morning wasn't going to really come. It was heart wrenching. All that work and you KNEW they weren't going to make it unless you took Majora down. This side quest hit right in the feels. I totally agree that this is the best side quest.
What a great summary of this quest and its many overlapping quests! Such a deep, emotional, wacky game. And yeah, without the player’s guide I never would have been able to complete this side quest on my original N64 back in the day!
There have been many moments in titles all across the _Zelda_ series that are full of heavy emotion, but I have to say that none of them holds a candle to _Majora's Mask_ in total. Out of all the games in the series, none of them punch you right in the heart repeatedly quite like this one.
Anju & Kafei's quest has always been my favorite side quest. And Majora's Mask as a whole my favorite game of all time as well, for that matter. :)
This side quest, its numerous tragic dead-ends if you slip up on even one task, and its beautiful resolution are the reason that Majora's Mask is my favourite story in the Zelda franchise.
I’m so happy you made a video of this side quest which is my absolute favorite from Majora’s Mask
Gorgeous video. This side quest consumed a huge part of my gaming experience as a kid.
It’s good to see Zeltik back. Even if just for a video. LOZ content is so rare lately until something new and great happens. So gotta support our boy when he’s back around 🤘🏽
Really beautiful video. Thanks for the hard work on this, MM is the dark but emotional refuge I need to escape to sometimes.
I remember the first time I completed this sidequest. It was beautiful but it felt so melancholic to go back in time after I brought them back together, and Anju would cry over his loss again...
When replying the game, I waited until I was ready to fight Majora before I did this quest because I cannot bear leaving them heartbroken and without hope in the final loop, even if things are fine once you beat the game 😅
All the times I've played Majora's Mask and there are still so many little interactions you highlighted here in this quest that I have never seen. We need another Zelda like this again someday...
I love this side quest and attribute it as one of the many reasons Majora's Mask is my favourite Zelda game.
I always finish this quest just before heading to the square to beat the game. It's my favorite side quest in the entire series. Having thay closure just before facing the final stretch of the game is big motivation to make sure they can greet the dawn together.
This has always been my favorite side quest and you showed me details to it that I had never seen before. Awesome video!
Ngl, I'd love to have a breakdown video of all Majora's Mask side quest characters and how they behave on each day. I never knew about the postman's final letter to himself, so I wonder what other secrets I've overlooked.
Nice to see people giving love to one of my fav Zelda games it's up there with oot as some of goat's of all time pun intended lol
This is why Kafei is my online name… I feel like I totally understand Kafei for closing off from the rest of the world out of sheer embarrassment. It’s so genuinely human to shy away from just coming clean.
Have yet to find a quest in another game that's as incredible as this one
Honestly, I can't help but feel that this side quest would make for a compelling film: two lovers seperated for some reason, both striving to be together again in time for the world's end so that they can at least die together and cherish the last moments they have.
A movie like that would most likely never get made because of the dark undertones - but man what a movie it would be!
