  • The moment you love your Subaru Outback most may be the moment your loved ones walk away from it after a crash. This commercial tells the story of an emotional reunion of a distraught mother with her young family after the family emerges unharmed from their severely wrecked Subaru Outback. It is a comforting reminder that Subaru has earned more IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards than any other brand since 2013.

    We rolled up to a reported rescue, which involved an overturned vehicle (Subaru), after securing the scene and assessing the unscathed driver (who reminded us that she needed to get home to cook dinner), I had to learn more about the Subaru brand. That was more than twenty years ago and I'm driving my 3rd Subaru since then.

    I have a valid question that I expect an answer to: was the dad distracted by the laggy touchscreen infotainment system versus a 0-lag button system? The scene depicts a fully-frontal crash so I question if there was indeed time to swerve to avoid a frontal-collision if indeed a 0-lag button system was utilized instead of a laggy touchscreen. Are my points not valid here?

      the red outback involved in the accident was a 2015-2019, one not equipped with the 11.6 inch touchscreen but instead a smaller 6.2 infotainment with physical hvac, radio, everything you need, etc.
      your points are not valid

    • @Fairly_Reasonable_Investor

    • @fregion4
      @fregion4 6 месяцев назад

      @@hx.925 @Fairly_Reasonable_Investor has valid points here though take out the model years and just account for infotainments. Doing the comparison this way is what we Engineers call A/B testing that we only focus on certain aspects of a certain thing. I speak from experience as a 2024 Outback owner and a Software Engineer with user experience and user interface design background.
      What Subaru has done with their current 11.6" infotainment screen is objectively and inherently unsafe. No, it is not just about it being laggy or not it is everything about the touchscreen itself and how Subaru has implemented it and the inherent characteristic of touch screens that make it not fit for certain functions. Touch based controls take longer to do than physical controls and mind you, every second counts when driving. Things can and will go south in a blink of an eye. With physical controls, you can rely on feeling while you keep your eyes on the road but touch based controls? you can't. Touch screens are flat without any bumps to distinguish one portion of the screen from another that forces users to take their eyes off the road.
      Also, fumbling on this kind of infotainment can get classified as distracted driving since it requires drivers to take their eyes and focus off the road for a longer time compared in previous center console iteration where you can simply press a physical button, rotate a dial, etc where it only takes a single action and you do not need to take your eyes off the road. To make things worse, the faster you drive and the longer you take your eyes off the road to adjust something in the 11.6" touch screen, the higher the chances that you will get in an accident. According to the NHTSA, you take off your eyes off the road for 5 seconds while driving at 55 mph, you have driven the entire length of a football field.
      What Subaru and other automakers that are doing the same are showing that they put cost cutting front and center and safety takes the back seat if not completely ignored.
      I will add these here from my other comment -
      There is a programming joke that perfectly mirrors what Subaru and other automakers are doing and it goes like this: Debugging - where you are the detective in a cr1m3 movie and at the same time, you are also the m|_|rd3r3r. You may have given us Eyesight system as standard but you are also endangering us with this kind of infotainment screen + center console implementation.
      Also there are times that users can't distinguish what they need from what they want. A large touchscreen with every vehicular control in it being a prime example of what users want but not what users need. True, some users may praise carmakers for giving them cars with large infotainment screen but that only lasts until it becomes a headache for them like when it fails then they can't adjust HVAC in the middle of blazing hot summer or freezing cold winter and they get slapped with a hefty repair bill or they get in to an accident because they took their eyes and focus off the road for too long because them fumbling on a horribly designed user interface like this,
      Subaru, I ask you to take a step back and review how and why this current infotainment screen + center console is putting your customers in harm's way then learn from it so you can make a better and safer implementation later on.

    With the amount of speed (50+) it would take to shift the cabin of the outback, shouldn't the ford cab be folded a lot farther?

    • @thegameshowgeek
      @thegameshowgeek 3 месяца назад

      Depends on the height of the two vehicles. I gather they contacted close enough to the chassis rails that the F150 took advantage and offered some resistance. Truck chassis are often higher than cars and smaller SUVs, which affects how intact the passenger cabins are post crash.

      actually when it comes to cars, you want them to be breakable, or have a crumble zone, that way the impact and energy is absorbed there. If you are in a car that can't break, like a cybertruck, all that energy still has to go somewhere, but without a crumble zone, that leaves all that energy and impact to go to you, and anyone else inside the car, leaving injuries for all.

    I was also involved in an accident with an Outback but the accident was my Outback vs a 2016 Dodge Charger on Marbledale Road in Tuckahoe. The Outback I had that I walked away from was a 2012 Subaru Outback and unfortunately I was charged with driving too fast but since it was my first speeding ticket I went to court and repleaded from pleading not guilty to guilty and the judge dropped the charges and I paid $225 in a parking ticket that it was downgraded to and I gotten the 11 points off my license thank god and I learned my lesson is to never drive too fast and never get distracted. Luckily I wasn’t drinking and driving because I would’ve gotten caught big time and would’ve been arrested and charged with driving under the influence so thank god that I was sober. But my brother felt very bad for me that I was involved in an accident alone. My brother regretted his decision to go with his friends and let me drive home by myself which was also the reason the accident occurred. My brother ended up paying for the accident because I felt very guilty for my huge mistake. The Outback I was driving was totaled but wasn’t as bad as in this commercial. I’m glad that I’m still here today still alive. I gotten a new used car and it was a bright blue 2014 Subaru Impreza a day after my 21st birthday which was on August 16th of 2023 and I turned 21 a day earlier. I had to get everything out of the Outback and put it in the rental car to bring home and I said goodbye to the navy blue 2012 Subaru Outback for the very last time. The very last song I heard before the accident was All Night Long by Lionel Richie. It’s a night that I will try to forgive myself for and try to cope with the loss of a beloved vehicle and a part of my family that will never be seen again. RIP Samantha O’Rourke Corrigan (navy blue 2012 Subaru Outback) December 31st 2011-July 15th 2023
