    I recently took and passed the PE Civil Structural exam, I had basically no experience with structural codes prior to taking the exam. I only got to study about 8 hours in total, and this was one of the two videos I watched to guide my studies. The notes are invaluable for the exam. Thank you so much, it would have been much harder to pass it on my first try if I hadn't had them.

    Thanks very much Rob for the helpful video and great resources. I just wrote and passed the FE Civil and am looking to start preparing for the PE Civil (Structural ) next year. I just bought the PE Civil Ref Manual as well as the NCEES practice exam and a couple other practice exams. The biggest challenge I'm having now is with the reference codes. I got most of them but the last two are insanely expensive. AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design 7th Edition and the PCI Design Handbook 7th Edition. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks again for taking the time to put this video together and all the useful flow charts as well.

      I'd definitely would try to source and bring those references to the exam. Don't want to leave even one easy lookup question on the board. I'd try to find a older used hard copy or PDF edition for those two resources. Of all the resources those would be two I wouldn't mind risking an older edition just because there typically aren't many questions coming from those references. Hope this info helps and good luck with your studies! Starting off well already by planning

    1. Did you bring the required OSHA manual to the exam? If so, did you print certain sections or you just happened to have the whole manual? I’m a bridge engineer, and we don’t really use the OSHA manual, and if he do have to we use the online PDF. Im debating whether or not to just print certain sections of the manual rather than buy the printed copy.
    2. In your structural flowchart notes, you mention “Appendix A” a lot. Are you referring to the ACI? I’m rewriting your flow chart notes do that I can learn them better, it’s a huge help!
    3. Which ACI edition did you bring to the exam?
    Thank you so much for all of your help!

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  6 лет назад

      Brenda Villarreal 1. Just print out the sections listed in the outline. If you read closely NCEES outlines the sections in the listed references section. It was about 30 pages only lol whew.
      2. Check out my video on how to design a concrete beam (fairly recent one). In the video description I remade appendix A intro a spreadsheet for download :)
      3. I used aci 318-11 but the current PE exam uses aci 318-14. Be sure to update your sections!
      Good luck I am rooting for you

    Great video. I'm a bridge engineer here in VA and just took the exam a few days ago. Not feeling too good due to simple code related questions and building related questions I missed. Also the morning was tougher than I anticipated. Where did your practice problems you worked come from? Was it the Practice Problems companion book to the CERM? I'm assuming you didn't take a review class?

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  6 лет назад

      Ryan McDaniel I used the companion book to the CERM. I think it had about 100 questions in there. I also used the NCEES practice exam and PPI online PE question access for 30 days and their book practice exam. NCEES was the best out of all with PPI book practice exam in second. I didn't take a review class, but have heard good things about EET. Typically we all underestimate how well we do on this exam so don't worry too much!

I plan to take the AM session this year and the PM session next year, and I wasn't sure if you meant you devoted 150 hours alone to the AM session.

      Bethany Goodrich I brought the "simplified design of reinforced concrete buildings" by pca which is a free download. I also brought a college textbook on geo for the morning that I felt comfortable with looking up quick easy calcs. Other than those and NCEES recommended texts nothing else. I had a dedicated "go to" book or section for each topic on the NCEES outline study guide. This helped so that I didn't overload myself with references I wasn't familiar with and would have lead to useless page turning during the exam. Hope that helps and good luck!

      I would go to NCEES website and download the exam syllabus for the transportation depth. I would bring all manuals advised in the syllabus in addition to the CERM. It may look like a lot of material to cover but in reality you probably only need to tab important sections or equations you come across while studying. Better to have each manual required than to miss one easy question that may be difference between passing or another 3 months of studying

    In your opinion, is a PE looked on more favorably than an MSE?

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  5 лет назад +1

      Yes a PE is held in higher regard due to the fact you can now legally take complete oversight in projects that require a licensed engineer. MSE is not bad to have but the cost/benefit equation doesn't always balance in an engineer's favor. If you can get an employer to pay for your master's or obtain scholarship is personally only way I would go unless academia was your career path

      Sure can if you are in state that has decoupled work experience from the PE exam. Just hop on NCEES and sign-up. If you're not in such a state then find the closest state that does decouple experience from the exam. You'd have to physically drive to that state to take the exam, but you wouldn't have to wait the time. Good question

      Definitely bring as many of the book, listed on the NCEES website, for your depth as you can. They may ask one question from a whole book, but if you don't have it, that's one less point you can rely on. The first time I took it I was missing the IBC and there were 3-4 questions on it for my exam.

      1. Learn English (which you seem to have mastered haha, I am personally learning Spanish and wish I had the same language command as you) 2. Create a LinkedIn profile and complete is fully with relevant work history and educational background. Use it as a tool to network and even email employees at companies/departments in which you would like to work. Some may not respond, but others would probably provide vital information on how to get noticed by hiring managers. Don't be afraid of a non-response or rejection. You don't know what you don't know until you ask! I email structural engineers probably on a monthly basis for advice; even those I don't know 3. If you are in structural engineering, take initiative to learn a analysis software and also Revit for creating drawings...or learn a relevant software in your engineering field 4. I am making a video this week with my friend from Iran about his experiences and I when I post it I will contact you!

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  7 лет назад

      Generally, yes you need to take and pass the FE exam to sit for the PE exam. Though, with enough work experience some states allow a waiver for the FE exam. For example, North Carolina currently offers a 20 year FE waiver if the applicant has 20 years of engineering experience. This is a state by state case, and I would advise you to email your state board if you feel you may have enough experience to have the FE waived or meet another requirement to have the FE waived.

    • @Asahel717
      @Asahel717 6 лет назад

      I have > 25 years work experience. I did not take the FE in college. I sat for the PE first and then three months later, the FE. I passed both on my first attempt. I studied close to 300 hours for the PE and nearly 200 hours for the FE. I did not take any online refresher courses. I did purchase Lindeburg's reference materials and the NCEES FE and PE practice exams. That along with various RUclips tutorials was enough. It was intimidating in that I had not taken a course in Thermo, Fluids or Differential Equations in 30+ years. I found the AM section of the PE was the hardest exam I ever took. I think I did very well on the PM portion of the PE. I was worried about the FE, but actually found it to be easy. Generally, the rule is: if you graduated from an ABET-accredited program, you can take the FE your senior year in college and sit for the PE after 4 years of experience under a licensed PE, or if you did not graduate from an ABET-accredited program, you must get permission from your State licensing board to sit for the exams, and then once cleared to take the FE, you will need 8 years experience as an engineer to sit for the PE. The hurdle is higher if your degree is not from an ABET program. The overwhelming majority of engineers with licenses take the FE first; taking the PE first is pretty rare but doable. Work a lot of problems and you should be fine.
