    Your method of tuning with the Tunebot works perfectly. I could not get the thing to work with hitting the drums with a stick. Once I used you method of striking the drums with my finger, my drums tuned up in minutes. They sound amazing and really sing. Excellent video.

    Great to see that a tuning that I managed to stumble on by trial and error is working for someone else! You essentially (in this rough setup +/- a few hz) have the drum tuned to a major 3rd interval, although your pitches are slightly off of the true notes (should be 220 on batter and 277 on reso). I have shorter toms (my 10" is only 7" deep) and tune it to a perfect 4th (208 batter/277reso) and it really makes for a great sounding drum that hits hard and gets out of the way quick. To each their own...I love how your tom sounds, regardless. :)

      Thanks man I’ll try that out. I no longer have that kit but my DW kit the 10 reso I believe is 220 which is a B then I go just a semi tone on batter. I’ve recently gone to a one up setup which totally changed how I tune the 12 and I had to bring the 14 up a bit too. I love drums take care. I have a bunch more shitty videos like this on my channel wish I had quality recordings and sound. This is all on a zoom recorder

    Great video. I too use my finger to tap instead of a stick, but I’ve also had good luck using a mallet. Love the Tune Bot now, but it takes a little time to learn how to use it properly. Thanks again for the great video. 👍🏻👍🏻

      Chuck O thank you for the kind words. These videos are old and not the greatest but if it helps anyone great. I’ve been using a mallet for awhile also works great and saves the finger ha haaaaa. If you get a tough drum the rim can takes it toll on our poor finger. All the best hopefully I have some new videos soon. If your bored and want to watch some of my cover band shit check out my playlist for zep tributes and 5 foot giant. Thanks later

    One tip I imported from tuning tabla, once you get close to the pitch you want, play a sine wave at the frequency you want the lugs to be, and use a thick stick to hit around the rim gently to get it in perfect tune. Otherwise the lugs will be a higher pitch then between the lugs. This how you get the drum singing, and not many people do this.
    Also you won't get it perfect with the tune bot, you have have a reference tone and go around and make sure each lug is not beating with the sine wave. it's a great tool though for getting in coarse tuning.
    And another tip, don't ever tune down and leave it. Tune it down farther than it should be, then tune back up, otherwise it will never stick, and you will be going around all day trying to play whack a mole.

    Hi Mike, I love your videos and also the tuning frequency choice. Can you send me the Tuning frequencies from top and bottom for your 12"? Also the one for a 14"snare drum and also for a 22"bass drum thanks

      I am so sorry for not ever checking in on comments. I see it’s been 10 years but hey better late than never lol. Unfortunately I don’t have this kit anymore and I’ll have to see if I had the settings written down. The 12 I never got to making a video for because I struggled with that drum but I can remember it was around a g# on the reso head and a bit lower on top sometimes the same. The bass drum I do not remember. There is a tunebot calculator app it’s free and it gives you tuning references for individual drums or you can pick the sizes of your Toms etc. it’s pretty cool. All the best and thanks for watching these awful old videos 10 years ago. It’s crazy to think it’s been 10 years since. 🔥🥁

    Hey Mike, Are you in med resonance on your setting? I'm coming up with 273 on reso head for a C# and 208 on the batter head... Your closer to a D at 220 on top 290 on bottom... In med resonance... When you got done it still sounded a little off. Just saying..

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177  9 лет назад

      Ya back when I did the video if your referring to the tune bot calculator settings is say it's medium to high resonance and ya in the video it sounds off but standing there with it it sounds really good. It was new to me also so it was my first round of tuning with it. Thanks and happy playing and tuning

  • @MajorGRecording

    When tuning guitar, you are supposed to always go from flat to in tune due to the string winding around the tuning peg. I'm wondering if this is true for drum heads as well? (Always tune up?)

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177  2 года назад

      Ya man for sure it’s always good to tune it up then down because it’s going to loosen up as we hit it. Same theory involved I guess

  • @brendakichman5751
    @brendakichman5751 8 лет назад

    Not crazy about the weird pitch bend. You're actually hearing two different 'notes' coming from that drum! When you hit a drum, the first sound you hear is the bottom (which is the first higher pitch you hear) and not the top! So if you're getting two different pitches, how can the tune-bot register one pitch? Don't get that!! To each his own on tuning I guess.

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177  8 лет назад +1

      I guess it's like any instrument when you play 2 notes to make a chord. Since I have one head muted while I tune it reads the one head. When I hit it open it reads the note that the 2 combined are producing. Listen to any video of the drums while I'm playing them and you will get an idea of what it really sounds like. That's a bad angle and I was really close to the recorder when I hit the drum but to each their own right.

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177  4 года назад

      Andrey Gubenko it’s more accurate to hit the same spot on your finger you feel it lol also this way doesn’t chance damaging the shell edge with an accidental hit of the stick or drum key but mainly because it makes a nice sound to tune

    What are your top and bottom settings for 12” tom?

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177  9 месяцев назад

      Hey what’s up. Sorry just seeing this question here I literally just today found a setting I liked for the 12 as I’m 12 up and 14 down now. Top is 178Hz bottom is 207Hz open note is 115hz I think it’s an A or a sharp A. I tune my snare c# or d over F# reso so I found this Tom tuning to be as close as I can get it to not reacting with the 12 tom. I do get snare buzz but it’s the best I can get it at a minimum. Take care 🔥🥁hope this helps.

    Look up Geof-Fry's tune-bot video.
    Actually, just watch every tune-bot video on YT that you can find because you'll learn a ton, gaining experience before you would otherwise gain it naturally. I learned about the tune-bot today, I'm purchasing it tomorrow and I'm already feeling fully ready to use it without any help thanks to all of the videos I've seen so far (which is under a dozen, but still).

      Hi there. Let me see try 163 top 174 bottom that will give you a G I believe. One step lower would be F# so top 154 bottom 164 and one step above the G would be G# 173 top 184 bottom. Try those out see if it works for you. Sorry for a long late response I just saw your comment. Thanks for checking out the videos I know they are awful quality but just sharing any helpful info I can.

    What is this drum made of, and what drumhead on a resonant side? Did you tune both sides the same, or which higher/lower?

    • @ThaKid14
      @ThaKid14 Год назад

      Well you can clearly tell he tuned the resonant head higher than the batter. It looks like some form of wood shell, I’m gonna guess maple. He used Remo heads.

      Hi sorry for not responding for like 9 years lol. The drum shells are Scandinavian birch with a grained maple finish ply. I tune the bottoms higher than the tops. I no longer have this kit wish I never got rid of it. I believe it was just remo ambassador clear on bottoms 🔥🥁

    That's the problem I have with the Tunebot....the readings can be so inconsistent. Hit it 4 times and you get 4 readings sharp or flat.

      Follow the instructions, mute the head slightly at the center, and press filter button when you think it is accurate. It should work perfectly if you know what you are doing, unless yours is broke, but that's unlikely. It's more likely you don't know what you are doing, because it takes time to figure it out. It's not a miracle worker, as you still have to tune by ear to a sine wave, but it is a great tool for getting you very close to where you want to be. Since I got mine, my kit sounds 10X better. Every drum vibrates in a beautiful tone in harmony with the others.

    Insane ...just take the wrinkles out and done, it's a drum , ear tuning always best and that sounds like ass after the tune bot...

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177  5 лет назад +1

      Billy Nolan well thanks for your opinion. Obviously the video and my recorder doesn’t give the drum justice. The kit has 3 rack Toms and two floor so if I just get rid of wrinkles the entire kit will sound the same. Maybe watch the all tuned up video and let me know what you think. I was going for a specific sound. Your way works for you my way works for me. I do not tell you or anyone how to tune drums just show how I tune mine. Trusting the ears is one thing if your ear is trained. I was going for specific pitches for an entire kit and sometimes when you trust your ear it can be off and you may get weird overtones but if your just going for some low wrinkles out tuning which I have done then yes that works for a specific sound. A drum to you may just be a drum but to me it’s an art a creation a living organism communication and so much more. If you played that Tom and I played it it’s possible that it would sound different no two drummers are alike. Just for the record listen to the s classix all tuned up video and you’ll see it doesn’t sound like ass it sounds fucking awesome and right where I wanted it to sound. I made a birch shell resonate for days. I like women and I like their asses so if your referring to my Tom sounding like a sweet firm shapely ass then thanks. 🥁 on
