Recording drums with an iPhone only using Garage Band-Nirvana drum cover

While learning cover songs or just messing around I take songs and remove the drums from the mix. I then mess around with my iPhone placement and my drums to get the best sounds I can. For this track I had my cowbell mounted on my bass drum hoop and I put two gels on top of cowbell and set the phone flat on the cowbell and hit record. Try tuning your bottom head of snare drum to an F# or G then tune the top head to where your ears like it. I find it to be a great snare drum tuning process. I used to tune reso up to G# but lately I find the F# to have more breath to it if that makes sense ha haaa. Lower snare sound top head c# higher tuning D# sharp. Usually anywhere in between those tunings sound awesome. Take care and thanks for checking out my awful video lol 🥁🔥

Try those out see if it works for you. Sorry for a long late response I just saw your comment. @mikeevangelista1177 9 месяцев назад

      Hey what’s up. Sorry just seeing this question here I literally just today found a setting I liked for the 12 as I’m 12 up and 14 down now. Top is 178Hz bottom is 207Hz open note is 115hz I think it’s an A or a sharp A. I tune my snare c# or d over F# reso so I found this Tom tuning to be as close as I can get it to not reacting with the 12 tom. I do get snare buzz but it’s the best I can get it at a minimum. Take care 🔥🥁hope this helps.

      Hi thank you very much. This is such an old video and now that I actually own a supraphonic I should make a new one. I unfortunately do not use Bonham tunings for my Tom’s but if you look up a video by Jeff Ochaltree (I own the dvd lol) he teched for Bonham for an album and he has a green sparkle kit all tuned up and he goes through the entire kit. If your ears are good you can put in headphones and try tuning your heads to the video as he taps tops and bottoms with a mallet. This is pretty much how I came up with this snare tuning it was from this video and trying to copy the tuning. Then with the tune-bot I was able to figure out what I had just done lol. Hope this helps you out. Take care have a great weekend.

      I usually tend to go higher on bottom but that is just me. That combo would prob work good for that size tom that way you don’t get the bawwwwwmmmnnnn pitch bend. If it sounds good to you then that is the right decision. I have a 14x14 X shell DW and my bottom is an A-A# so around 117 hz - to 120hz bottom I now go around 120hz - -124hz on the top just for the feel of when I play it and it just brings the pitch up enough to we’re I like it. So sound and feel are what you should aim for no rules no right or wrong

  • @DoubleD_93
    @DoubleD_93 Год назад

    Great to see that a tuning that I managed to stumble on by trial and error is working for someone else! You essentially (in this rough setup +/- a few hz) have the drum tuned to a major 3rd interval, although your pitches are slightly off of the true notes (should be 220 on batter and 277 on reso). I have shorter toms (my 10" is only 7" deep) and tune it to a perfect 4th (208 batter/277reso) and it really makes for a great sounding drum that hits hard and gets out of the way quick. To each their own...I love how your tom sounds, regardless. :)

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177 Год назад

      Thanks man I’ll try that out. I no longer have that kit but my DW kit the 10 reso I believe is 220 which is a B then I go just a semi tone on batter. I’ve recently gone to a one up setup which totally changed how I tune the 12 and I had to bring the 14 up a bit too. I love drums take care. I have a bunch more shitty videos like this on my channel wish I had quality recordings and sound. This is all on a zoom recorder

      I don’t remember off hand I believe it was 4 ounces thinner to a quart roughly. I recently switched to megavar conversion varnish where you add the catalyst or whatever it is and wow HUGE difference. I think my biggest problem was the temperature it was winter in Buffalo in a non heated un insulated garage. I had to fire up propane heaters while I prepped and sprayed it would get hot but I’d leave and shut it down and it would get freezing cold. I also sprayed some ML Cambell conversion varnish in a professional spray shop and wow crazy how different it is with a nice machine and gun to spray out of. That product dries flawless and sands like glass. I also learned a lot about priming it has to be heavy or two coats sanding in between.

    You should watch a video on how to avoid Orange Peel. That's your problem. Watch the automotive paint videos, you can really learn a lot from the auto painters. Also, try a Gravity fed gun instead, it really helps with your angle; and angle is hugely important. So you're basically having a problem with atomization.

  • @milosrestoration1337
    @milosrestoration1337 Год назад

    I know you’re probably way past this video, it’s 8 months old now but I think that you might be expecting too much off the gun. It’s going to have some orange peel in it as soon as you shoot it but time should allow it to level out. Definitely need some retardant with Gemini and Lenmar in my experience though. Stuff is dry as soon as I shoot it. I had similar problems. Never had those problems with water based lacquers but solvents reliably cure quickly. Your setup is awesome you really couldn’t do much more to make it better.

    How do you determine the pitch of the shell if the "timbre" note isn't on the shell

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177 3 года назад

      That is the question I feel ya. Before I had DWs I had to figure this out also. What I did was took ALL the hardware off the drums lugs everything down to just the shell and brand badge hold it like John Good does and give the shells a side fist tap and compare it to notes on a key board or a guitar or tuner kind of thing and find what the note is. Once you’ve done that you can make sure your kit shells are in tune with themselves in intervals example my kit goes like from ten to twelve 6 semi tones down then 5 from 12-14 then like 8 -9 for the kick. If your kit shells dont have a good interval you can get a problem drum I had a mapex Saturn 8 10 12 14 16 22 the 14 floor was mounted and 12 deep and that drum would not resonate with the kit dinggggggg dangggggg dooooommmm bonk booooooom dooooooooooooom ha haaaaaa move the 14 away from the kit it was a cannnon take away the 12 and 16 the 14 sounded huge it was weird but that’s what timbre matching is about. Anyway that’s how you can determine the pitch of the shell and most drums are all in the ball park pitch wise. Hope this makes sense and if you do this it’s not worth doing it to the kick just tune the kick to follow the sequence of notes.

      @@mikeevangelista1177 i have 2 yamaha stage customs from the 90s. Tom sizes 10 12 14 . . . 22kick . . what do you recommend intervals between each drum should be?

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177 3 года назад

      @@friedpickles342 shit well it depends what style your playing but I like 5 semi tones give or take between it gives each drum space to be it’s own sound and has a nice scale but that what my ears like now remember that would be the notes of the bottom heads being 5-6 semi tones apart the overall note if the drum when you hit it may about 7 semi tones or notes between again give or take how you tune the top if any of that makes sense ha haaaaa. Honestly just start with your 10 and tune the bottom to how you want your drum to sound in your head then do that to 12 and 14 if you have a tunebot you can see the note as well hertz and you can then determine from the 10 down to the 12 keeping it 5-7 notes lower. The twelve may sound better 4 notes down and the 14 6 notes down or vice versa but after your bottom heads are a nice scale then tune up the tops until the drum sounds good to what your ears want to play. The tunebot has saved me sooooooooo much aggravation and time because I can save the settings for top bottom open so I retune up in minutes not hours and is the bottom head out or top head? I used to only seem to focus on the top head but the bottom was out too. Reso head is very important that it’s tuned evenly remember we smack the top head so it’s naturally going to detune over time but that bottom head will carry the tone in my opinion. I took a Sonor s Classix kit apart 8 10 12 14 16 and tried to timbre match technique to find the notes of the shells even though oddly they had a letter stamped in each one that turned out to be the note anyway I just had to know. I remember the 8 being a way bigger higher up note then the rest of the kit. I’ve heard John good refer th 8s always being pitched high hence x shells and vlt which my kit has it’s a vlt toms x floor and a vlx+ kick 20 it’s fn amazing I’ve never went away from a 20 after my laying this bass drum. Anyway back in topic I hope any of this helps you and makes sense. Good luck and happy tuning

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177 3 года назад

      @@friedpickles342 also if you look up the tunebot calculator it gives you settings for tuning configurations of kits see each drum is roughly pitched the same some a bit high some low but matching the entire kit I think really makes sense for overall sound. But ya there is a threshold for each drum and a ballpark pitch it should be check out the tunebot calculator and if you don’t have a tunebot they are worth it takes a second to figure it out and learn to trouble shoot if your getting an off reading. For done reason and I’ve had 2 the same do the same thing but the lug to my immediate right if the tuner sometimes just gives me a totally different note or reading like way off so I have to pick it up and move it down and boom perfect so shit like that can happen. That’s more with a snare bottom or top not to much with toms but sometimes. Take care please don’t hesitate to ask more questions if I’m confusing you in any way. Some people tune the bottom head to pitch then tune the top 1 or 2 or 3 notes lower like say your snare bottom head F# or G to G# and your top head d to a d sharp for medium to medium high

      @@mikeevangelista1177 I'm in s cover band. We normally play rock/alternative music. I've had alot of time to kill recently. And I've been tweeking around with my drums alot lately. I do own a tunebot also use one of those phone apps. Which are just as good as tunebot. Anyways. I've noticed that the 12 and 14 ince toms seem to cancel each other out when mounted on the same stand. More like the 12 is messing with the 14 floor tom resonance. I remove the 12 and the 14 rings like a bell. I use the 1 up 2 down set up. The 14 floor tom is legless. .

      William Mills hey pearl makes a great drum. I had an export kit for like 12 years maybe more. Depends what sound your looking for really. You can’t go wrong with Evans coated G12 on tops and a clear or coated G1 on the bottoms or if your a remo guy ambassador x I think is the same thickness as G12. I find them to be right between a single and double ply head. I like Remo but I’ve tried Evans and man does that level 360 technology really work. The head just sits flat whereas the remos wiggle and feel tight. Anyway hope this helps you out and tuning is key for your sound good heads or not

    I just came across this video. I love your passion for a great drum sound.Ive always took pride in tunning drums as well.Ive owned around 40 kits in my 50 years of playing.8 of those kits were DW collectors series.(some of the finest in the world) .I currently own a set of the Maple/ mahogany collectors series.Ive never used a tune bot,or tension meter.Ive always tuned by ear.What use to work for me was always what ever I did on the top head I did on the bottom head.I would play a lot of clubs and people would always compliment me on my drum sound.They sounded great to me at home as well. Recently I received this m/m kit and they came with the 2ply DW heads.(I was always a single ply. guy) This totally changed my whole approach to tunning drums.What worked b4 was no more.At first I was ready to replace the batter head with 1ply.clear/coated DW heads. Contrary to other people's opinions I love these heads John Good created with Remo.Now I'm dealing with something new and it's 2 plyyyyyy.!!. I tried something new.I took a drum finger tight,set it on a towel reso head up.I tuned that head until it started to resonate, I turned the drum over and did the same.The sound that came out of each drum was unbelievable. I still can't believe it.Who says you can't teach a old dog new tricks.DW builds some of the finest drums out there. They don't cost anymore than other high end drums.The research and development that goes into this instrument is staggering. The quality of components used,and there finishes applied are about as good as it gets.Makes you wonder what will they come up with next!!! Enjoy them DWs.

    isn’t a G on the batter too high and too tight? or it’s supposed to be like that?

    • @mikeevangelista1177
      @mikeevangelista1177 5 лет назад

      Berj hey it’s the resonant or bottom head that would be tuned to a G. Anywhere from an E to an A I think is a good tension for reso heads. E being less tension and A being high tight tension. I’ve come to favour F# for my snares and then usually D -D# for the batter. This video refers to the overall sound being a G or G# when you hit the drum. Find what sound you like. Try tuning or tensioning bottom head to a G it’s a common ground tuning. It allows your snares to make good contact and respond well then tune or tension top or batter head to where you like it to sound. For me a D is a bit low sounding say medium tension and down from there for a big fat sound usually needing some type of muffling and up from a D to get a nice crack tight sound. In drum tuning or tensioning there is no right or wrong just what gets you the sound you want. Hope this helps you out or answers your question. Yes in my opinion G cranked up on the batter top head would be crazy tight but if it’s the sound one desires then it’s perfect for them. 🥁 🥁 🥁

      Edson Picasso the TUNEBOT is a great tool to save your tunings you like so you can retune after any situation like lots of playing or new heads. Also once you tune by ear or feel you can use the tunebot to tweak in anything that may be off. Remember I’m using no mics this is just a zoom HD recorder and if you watch my DW all tuned up video you will hear the kit being played again with just the zoom recorder mic and you’ll hear how good the kit sounds. Take care have a great day

      @@mikeevangelista1177 Yeah it's good for saving and the added accuracy. However if a drummer has pitch capable ears he can get away without. Won't be as accurate as the tunebot lug to lug though. Still considering to get one or stick with my ears. I've tuned drums to just feel and experimentation. There are tunings that stray away from the tunebot settings which I did manually following the tunebot calculator. I googled a free frequency calculator online and used a phone tuner tone generator to match the pitches to the frequencies suggested. This works if you have the pitch correct ear. But it's a tedious task. Not completely useless to drummers that can tune by ear. It's accuracy and saving function that you pay for. For a tone deaf drummer. It's a godsend. To me? I'm thinking about it for now. I saw Virgil Donati and Thomas Lang pre clinic tuning drums. They just tapped and tuned by ear. It was so fast. They sounded great.

      Billy Nolan well thanks for your opinion. Obviously the video and my recorder doesn’t give the drum justice. The kit has 3 rack Toms and two floor so if I just get rid of wrinkles the entire kit will sound the same. Maybe watch the all tuned up video and let me know what you think. I was going for a specific sound. Your way works for you my way works for me. I do not tell you or anyone how to tune drums just show how I tune mine. Trusting the ears is one thing if your ear is trained. I was going for specific pitches for an entire kit and sometimes when you trust your ear it can be off and you may get weird overtones but if your just going for some low wrinkles out tuning which I have done then yes that works for a specific sound. A drum to you may just be a drum but to me it’s an art a creation a living organism communication and so much more. If you played that Tom and I played it it’s possible that it would sound different no two drummers are alike. Just for the record listen to the s classix all tuned up video and you’ll see it doesn’t sound like ass it sounds fucking awesome and right where I wanted it to sound. I made a birch shell resonate for days. I like women and I like their asses so if your referring to my Tom sounding like a sweet firm shapely ass then thanks. 🥁 on
