lmao! Broadening your perspective helps a lot! 😉I played FF11 back on the PS2 and then switched to FF14 on the PS3 when it came out... So I've never had a problem with the controller settings in 14.
@@gamer_debbie oh in that case, can I get your opinion on my Latest video? It's the "FFXIV Veteran finally plays FFXI" one. I'd love to hear how your experience differs from how it is in 2023. :3 If you have time, of course! It's 15mins long 😊👍
The controller support in FFXIV is so goot that I play it a lot on my beast of a gaming PC. I have a mechanical keyboard and MMO mouse but nothing beats chilling and sitting back with a nice controller.
The controller support in xiv really is phenomenal, I play both (PS for being lazy. PC for more important content.) but I've gotten so used to controller lately I'm starting to prefer it even inside harder content. I did a solo HoH run on controller recently and had a blast! Kiting and LoS was kinda spooky at first and pomander use always felt a bit slower, but things went smoothly once I got used to it. But the best part was how comfortable it felt after long sessions! I still can't get over the fact that I'm playing an MMO on controller, and enjoying it lol.
You're absolutely right! I have carpel tunnel in my wrist, so there is no way I would be able to play as much as I do with a mouse/keyboard. I end up feeling the strain that way after a much shorter time! Congrats on your solo run! It's something I haven't attempted yet. And I'm glad you're enjoying it! 💜
I agree with you mate. I prefer to play games using the Numpad and move with WASD and so in actuality - playing with a controller is an improvement for my keyboard turning arse lol.
Whoever designed FF14's controller setup is brilliant. On PC, controller is good for giving your wrists and shoulders a rest. Also, simple jobs, like WAR and DNC, are easy enough to play on controller, so you can go full comfy mode.
Up until I started streaming, I played exclusively on the sofa as comfy as I could get. 😉 And I didn't ever feel I was excluded from any content because of it. They want to keep both experiences comparable, and you're right - they are doing a great job! ☺️
Just throwing down some tips/tricks that I've learned over the years on how to customize your controller to work best for you. Of course, I offer suggestions for new players, but feel free to use this information however you'd like! Thank you so much for watching! 💜
Good starter guide. I'd also add one more trick that I really wish I knew about earlier. On the Custom tab, you can specify which sets of cross hotbars tapping R1 will cycle through depending on whether your weapon is drawn or sheathed. This might just be a quality of life feature for some, but I found a great use for it. For my Black Mage, hotbars 1 and 2 are nearly identical, except that some single-target spells of hotbar 1 (fire3, fire4, ice3, thunder) are replaced with AoE equivalents on hotbar 2 (fire2, flare, ice2, thunder2). So all I have to do is tap R1 to switch between my single-target and multiple-target setup, and I can use the same muscle memory. I've yet to use this strategy on another job, but I suspect it might be useful for Red Mage, which I've yet to even play as. You could do this for Dancer, but it's not like the class really needs it.
Actually knew this stuff and was looking to see if there was anything I missed. But glad this video is out here because I have had countless people telling me how inconvenient controller is and no matter how I explain the numerous settings the message doesn't get across. It's just how a person sets up how they play that will make the difference. I love playing with controller far more than keyboard. There is zero issues with controllers.
Absolutely! Thank you so much! 💜I play with controller on both PS5 and PC, because controller is more comfortable for me and my poor wrists than a keyboard/mouse. And I know people who play even the highest end content with controller. It's all about finding what works best for you.
Hey I just wanted to say thank you about these. I've seen a few guides on the best setups but none on how to actually fix the settings on a controller format. I'm pretty new so I barely need the 8 slots yet but being able to understand how to use the HUD editor page on a controller was a saving grace. ty
As someone who just picked up the game on PS4 after over 300 hours on PC, this is a big help. I'll still primarily play on PC, but having the ability to play on PS4 for more casual occasions or when I don't have access to my PC is very nice.
Awesome! 💜I love having the option to play while on my sofa with my console. Especially if I know I'm just going to be doing something easy or grindy for a few hours. Much more comfortable than the desk. So I completely understand!
Its funny seeing the WoW players being butthurt that a controller is not capable with WoW... I keep telling them... look at FF14 online they're able to do it flawlessly. Yet they're so indenial.
And honestly that comes from controller being an option right from the start (PS2 with FF11 and PS3 with FF14). I don't think there is any way, after the fact, they can add controller support into WoW and have it be viable.
it’s not denial, you just don’t understand WoW lol. the target swapping is SO much faster in wow. infact pretty much all response is way faster, and no way is a controller working for high end play. you already can use a controller for wow via addons, plenty of people do. but it’s just for super casual stuff. you cant actually use it in genuinely difficult gameplay .
It’s funny hearing you recommend leaving skill names on. The skill icons are so recognisable to me that I couldn’t tell you the name of a single skill, yet know what all of them do by icon. I’m glad you can turn them off. I’ve just switched to controller and am finding it a bit tricky due simply to muscle memory of my keyboard actions, but this guide helped me tidy up a couple of things that were getting in the way of building up the new muscle memory.
Kudos to you for attempting something that is honestly really difficult! 💜It can take a long time to master a controller. It took me about 20 hours to get really comfortable just from making the switch from PS controller to XBOX controller and there are only a few minor differences! Muscle memory is king! I'm glad I was able to help you even just a bit!
Thanks for this video... Ever since I killed my pc I have been playing on Playstation 5... Had been using razer orbweaver with mouse. I feelz relax on couch with controller and TV.
I’m about to start this on the PS5 in a month or two after binging the entire FF series with the platinum trophy. I have played and platinumed Ff1-10, 10-2, 12, 13, 13-2, 16, 7 Remake/rebirth, Crisis Core, Type-0, and Strangers of Paradise all within the last year. I just have to play and platinum Lightning Returns and 15 then I’m ready for FF14. I told myself the day the Pixel Remasters came out on PS5 that I would play the entire series for the first time ever before playing FF14. I would’ve been done months ago but Baldur’s Gate 3 stole 350 hours of my life.
I'd say you got off pretty light.... between PS5 and PC, I think BG3 took more than that from me. 😅 But I'm excited for you to get to try ffxiv! With Dawntrail coming out soon we're all very excited!
I like my MMO mouse but I liked my dualshock 4 on my pc before I got the mouse, and I'm tempted to go back to controller again, partially because I can play on my steam deck. Here's a tip: you can back up your character settings online at character select screen, and easily restore it if you mess something up, but can also download all your character settings and hotbars to another platform or computer.
I play controller on PC! I used to play with a duelshock 5, but once I got my ROG Ally I switched to an Xbox Controller, and now I feel really well set up to start tackling some harder content. Thanks for sharing! 💜
great video, thank you, as a controller player on PC (im 58 and have a slight disability that hampers me using MKB) anyways, quick question for you or anyone else, I'm a tank and use this set up but my issue is, and I can't find a setting to help, when im solo and doing some dps out in the wild and there are more than 1 enemy, as im doing dps on one enemy, after I perform a skill, my target switches to a different enemy than the one standing in front of me. did that make sense ??? am I missing a setting to not auto switch to a different target ?
Thank you so much! 💜 As for your question, in the "Character Configuration" Menu, under "Control Settings" there is a tab for 'Target'. In that menu, you will have a couple different options for how you would like your game to auto-target the next foe. You can choose to go with 'Ignore Depth' or 'Cone'. Choosing "Cone" will almost always select the 'closest' one to you. But play with the options to see what works best for your play style. I know over the years I've made the occasional tweaks, but you never know what works best for you until you try it. So don't hesitate to experiment with some of those menu options! I hope this helps! 💜
How do you set up your GCD and OGCD for skill rotations? I feel like it feels so awkward whenever I toggle and move at the same time. Example, I don’t like the feeling of pressing the dpad if i wanna do my rotation and simultaneously move. So most of my core skill rotation are on the right side but I feel like im limited with my skills coz I don’t like to using the left side. I wanna improve how to use a controller so i can play ffxiv on my steam deck but whenever I give it a try, it just frustrates me and go back to my pc to play 😅
Thank you for sharing!! I just got a ROG Ally and have started playing on an XBOX controller for the first time, and have been encountering the same difficulty you mention here! I didn't seem to have that issue on the PS3/4/5 controllers I've played on over the last decade. I don't know if it's just because the DPAD/Joystick on the XBOX controller is reversed compared to the PS, or if there is something else (bigger gap, etc). While I'm figuring it out myself, the only advice I can give is that practice is going to make the biggest difference. Even if it doesn't feel right, the more you use it, the better you will get. I forced myself to do 20 unsynced Alexander runs just to get in some practice and by the end I was feeling noticeably more comfortable with it. It's going to take a week or two before I can say for sure whether it's a practice issue or a controller issue - but when I do, I'm definitely making a video!
To be honest, I've never used an xbox controller for FFXIV, so I don't have a personal opinion of it. But I do know people who use offbrand/custom controllers and the bottom line is whatever feels comfortable to you, and in your hands, is the best thing to use! There are a number of ways to customize the game to your preferences, so as long as it feels good I'd recommend to give it a try! I hope this helps! 💜
Is it easier on the hands to play this way. I recently have been having chronic pain issues with my hands and took a break form the game for a while because of it. I really want to play it again but playing it on KB&M like I used to will be too hard i think.
Yes! Absolutely! I have carpal tunnel in both wrists (waiting for surgeries) and I can't play on KB/M at all without my hands going numb almost instantly. With the controller, I can play for a few hours at a time with no issue. Plus, you can use ANY controller, which means you can find one that fits your hands best. (I find the XBOX controllers a little smaller than the PS5 controllers which is better for me, but they are a couple ounces heavier). I hope this helps! 💜
@@gamer_debbie Thanks so much for the reply, that's really helpful. I also have carpal tunnel in my hands, but it doesn't seem as bad as yours. My issues are more with tendon pain in my hands/forearms/wrists. Thanks again for your comment, I might just try it...I do have a PS4 controller laying around.
@@niromanti5935 You're welcome! 💜 And it never hurts to give it a try! Just remember that like learning ANY new game, switching from Keyboard/Mouse to Controller takes time and practice. It is never just as easy as switching over and being good to go.
@@gamer_debbie I've played for about 5 hours so far and no issues! Took a while to dial the setting and hotbars but I think i can play like this now. Thank you for your video and comment, they were super helpful. I'm just glad I can finally play again.
I can't select items on the ground for quests on console, like there is no cursor or way to target an item. Just cycles through nearby players. What am I doing wrong?
Pressing the X (or confirm) button on your controller will select the nearest object. You can also change what your directional buttons cycle through in the options menu. I hope this helps! 💜
@@gamer_debbie thank you for answering, apparently others were having the same problem on the same quest and it has now been fixed. Also I found out you can bring up a mouse cursor by clicking the top left button and in on the right joystick on any controller to select items when the auto select has problems.
@@gamer_debbie I was in the market of getting dual flight sticks for the Star Citizen game. This will just be amusing. I already have a Thrustmaster Hotas I could try.
@@jojorumbles8749 Awesome! I've been a controller player since the start, but recently switched to an xbox gamepad instead of PS, and I've pre-ordered the FFXIV Hori Tactical Assault commander to try as a hybrid between controller/kbm. I'm just super-curious regarding unique ways to control the game, atm! Keep me updated!
That's a good question! I suppose it's because I assumed that someone looking up a controller guide was either playing on console (where it is already on by default) or has tried to use controller and is looking for some tips/tricks they might have missed. This video was made when I was still quite new at content creation, so I hope that if I were to make it again in the future, I'd be aware of small details like that.
idk if its just me but... i cant figure out how to lock on... i really have to just use the d pad to intiate combat??? feeels so awkward... please help!..
Pressing L3 (the left joystick) will draw your weapon, or if its already out, it will lock on to your current target. That allows you to strafe around your target. But the most common way to initiate combat is to use one of your abilities on your hotbar. Hitting an enemy with a weaponskill or spell will automatically initiate combat. I hope this helps! 💜
Ps4 player btw. This helped a lot. But is there a separate hotbar from the r1 press rotation because lv 90 drk uses all spaces in both hotbar 1 and 2. I want sprint and Lb to be somewhere but that would mean I'd have to use 3 hotbars just to sprint and that will(has) gotten in the way of my rotation of hotbar 1 - hotbar 2. And I can't use the double tap solution because that means I would have to put sprint and lb on one of the r1 press rotations which again will mess up my hotbar 1 hotbar 2 rotation.
Thank you! 💜 I'm glad it helped! I've played on the PS4 before I upgraded to PS5, and PC, so I definitely know where you're coming from! As for your question, unfortunately I'm not quite understanding what it is you're asking. Besides the R1 press rotation there is also the L1 press rotation. And then there is the small hotbar accessed by holding L1 & R1. So that gives you access to 4.5 hotbars at the same time on controller mode. I'm sorry if this doesn't answer your question. 😓
You shouldn't have to press R1 at all, you have access to 6 different hotbars just from your R2 and L2 buttons. I think a good place for Limit Break and sprint (and my Mount, and target icons) is the hotbars you get by holding L2/R2 then pressing L2/R2. That's where I have my stuff~
@@halosaft I agree that you shouldn't have to press R1 at all during battle, but I do press it frequently outside of conflict. It is convenient to have multiple hotbars accessible that way, instead of scrolling through them one at a time. But it is an awesome idea to have all those buttons together somewhere where they live on all your classes! Great for muscle memory! 💜 Thank you for sharing!
Unfortunately the MP bar will always be pink, but the bar shown in the video is my GP bar, from gathering (I'm on a Fisher). That bar is blue. I hope this helps! 💜
In this video, my upper hotbar is bar 6. So I hold R1 and then press the right directional button to select hotbar 6, and then I assign abilities to it and the press R1+triangle to go back to hotbar 1. You can also select hotbars by cycling through them with R1. Eventually you will come across your upper one and you'll be able to assign abilities to it. I hope I was able to explain it well and this helped!
What bothers me is when I acces the top skill ones and use one it returns to the bottom skills and I have to double tap once more to acces the top again😭
Oh no! There's an option for that! If you go into your character settings, there is a checkbox that sends it back after an action, or one that keeps it there as long as its held in - you need to change that setting. I agree, I couldn't play with it the other way! I hope this helps! 💜
I know everyone's got different opinions and such, but I well as several of my friends have raided seriously on controller for years now. I would recommend against using the expanded crossbar options like you have shown here. The L2+R2 section WAY too convenient to waste on stuff you almost never use in combat. It's better in my opinion to turn expanded crossbar on so you can track the cooldowns you place there, but make them inaccessible with the double tap option. Instead, set up the L2+R2 options to reach them. The double tap option is extremely clunky, and either doesn't activate when you want it to or does when you don't. You'll end up clipping your GCD, or using important cooldowns by mistake. Things like macros, waymarks, and even AOE rotations can be separated onto a different R1 or L1 bar only accessible when your weapon is drawn.
I appreciate the feedback! Thank you!💜 I think it all depends on the player, how much practice they've had, and what their goals are in the game. For sure, I recommend anyone who wants to raid as you do to check out your advice! I have almost no experience in savage/ultimate content. As I create content mostly for new or casual players, I tried to offer suggestions and information to get people started into controller use who may not know what functions are even available to them.
That is honestly the best reason to do it.💜 It's why I still play on both my PC and console. PC for when I'm srs gaming, and console for when I'm half-playing, half-watching RUclips and sprawled on the sofa.
Awesome! I think controller on PC is the best of all worlds and is now my favourite playstyle. Unless I'm lounging on the sofa on my PS5. Thanks for sharing!💜
I'm so glad I could help! 💜And don't feel dumb. There is nothing in the game that tells you this, so unless you happen to stumble across it on your own, or watch someone point it out, you wouldn't know!
I went from pc only, to ps5 only for all games. And let me tell you, playing mmorpg's on controller is a GIANT mountain to climb. I just cant get with the program. MY old pc guild had a no pad player rule for our healers, and i never understood why untill now. Im not saying a pad player cant be high level, but i can see why guild masters would want to make sure their healers have the least possibility to mess up as possible and i dont think its debateable, pad has a harder time over all.
Honestly, I really believe that whatever you learned on - controller or keyboard, the thing you switch to will be harder! I've tried multiple times to learn to play on keyboard and I'm convinced I'll always be garbage at it. And I know controller players who have done current savage/ultimate content. So unless you're willing to invest hundreds of hours into building up muscle memory again, I believe it is easier to stick with what you know. 💜 Thankfully you do have the ability to play either way on console and PC. As far as guild masters requiring one or another - I think it's unnecessary to make that distinction with a player who you otherwise wouldn't be able to tell from their performance what they were using. But guilds absolutely have the freedom to set their own requirements. 👍
Playing FF11 recently has reeeeeeally made me appreciate how friendly the UI & controls are in FF14 😂

It's going to take a week or two before I can say for sure whether it's a practice issue or a controller issue - but when I do, I'm definitely making a video!
whats your opinion on using the xbox controller?
To be honest, I've never used an xbox controller for FFXIV, so I don't have a personal opinion of it. But I do know people who use offbrand/custom controllers and the bottom line is whatever feels comfortable to you, and in your hands, is the best thing to use! There are a number of ways to customize the game to your preferences, so as long as it feels good I'd recommend to give it a try! I hope this helps! 💜
Thanks for this video. I play on steam deck
Oh, cool! How is it playing on the steam deck? I'm glad I could help! 💜
@@gamer_debbie i like it but it definitely takes some getting used to!
This video encouraged me to buy a controller.
Aww... Thank you! 💜Good luck, and remember that practice makes perfect!
@@gamer_debbieoh, thank you for the advice. I'll spend this time before dawntrail to practice.
@@DRS8503 I'm glad it was fixed! Thank you for the update. 💜
I betcha with a bit of time and effort, I could play FF14 with dual flight sticks.
I bet you could! 💜If you do, let me know! I'd love to chat with you about it on a video! 😉
Why don't you open with 'toggle gamepad mode'?
I absolutely love playing on controller but I’m still struggling to learn how to properly use to map
If you have any questions please let me know! I'd love to make a video that will help! 💜
How do you change the color your MP bar to blue? I want that!
Unfortunately the MP bar will always be pink, but the bar shown in the video is my GP bar, from gathering (I'm on a Fisher). That bar is blue. I hope this helps! 💜
@@gamer_debbie understood, thank you!
how do i assign skills to the cross hotbars (the upper one's) i can't figure it out...
@@gamer_debbie okay i figured it out now :) thanks alot, I now just gontta find a "setup" for trial summoner lvl 50 xD - i may find something
@@nykerc5127 You're very welcome! I'm glad I could help! Good luck finding a setup that works best for you! 💜
@gamer_debbie saw your message late but I did found it later on tysm!!
@@Axermis You're so welcome! I'm glad you found it!
I just use controller so I can lay in bed to go mining while watching a movie to make that GIL $$$$$
That is honestly the best reason to do it.💜 It's why I still play on both my PC and console. PC for when I'm srs gaming, and console for when I'm half-playing, half-watching RUclips and sprawled on the sofa.
went from keyboard and mouse on pc to controller on ps3 then to controller on pc
Awesome! I think controller on PC is the best of all worlds and is now my favourite playstyle. Unless I'm lounging on the sofa on my PS5. Thanks for sharing!💜
I've put in 100 hours without knowing you could add more on controller and now I feel dumb lol
I'm so glad I could help! 💜And don't feel dumb. There is nothing in the game that tells you this, so unless you happen to stumble across it on your own, or watch someone point it out, you wouldn't know!
The kindness of this community is wild for someone coming from 13 years of League of Legends.@@gamer_debbie
