5 Cummins Repowered Caterpillar 660B Scrapers -- Detailed Walk-Around

  • On my trip to Perris, California on September 12th, 2022, I spotted a group of very rare Caterpillar 660B scrapers sitting on the Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers' lot and was lucky enough to get access to shoot some videos of them.
These five were repowered with Cummins engines, while 2 more on the lot were repowered by Detroit Diesel Series-60 engines. I'm not sure what years the scrapers were built, most likely the 1970's, but these were probably converted to Cummins power in the early 2000's to comply with ever tightening California emissions.
One of the employees of Ritchie Bros, who coincidentally was already a subscriber of mine 👍, said that these units had already been sold. I don't know to whom or where, but I felt very lucky to be able to get such close access to some scrapers that I thought I'd never see again. I hope they've got more working years ahead of them and not a date with the torch.
    Please 👍. Thank you, enjoy.

I work in the aircraft and I find construction equipment more fascinating

I'm a cashier in a grocery store, almost 30-years, and my mind is numb from people and repetition. Planes and construction machinery, FAR more fascinating. Thanks for watching. 🤠👍

I could spend all day watching construction equipment, love them.

Thanks for watching. I have several videos of heavy equipment in action. I've been lucky to catch some machines at work.

Thanks, Dave! I always hope that my videos where I show as much detail as I can, will help someone in the future with their restoration or modelling project or whatever it may be. I know there are times when pictures in a book or on the internet don't always show everything that I hope to see, and I can't find the answer. Just like your recent radiator change video. Many folks didn't know that EMD radiators are set in the hoods at an angle or that coal falls through the fans and collects inside there, but now they know and have learned some new things. 👍🙂

I think I'd want the ones with the 60 Series but my panning days are over because I can feel my back tighteningnup just thinking about bouncing around on one, although the 830 and 835 roller was a nice change. Good shooting, Scotty and happy day and evening to you!

Thanks, Lewie. Yes sir, it's best you just let your back take it easy from now on. You've earned that. Good evening to you and Toots! 🙂

Has to be California. Nobody else would bother with actually installing exhaust after treatment on something that old. We take tang shit off our stuff as the warranty is expired .

No other state (yet) would mandate that all of that emissions equipment be installed in order to keep running those old scrapers.

So what’d that cost to adapt Cummins motors?

    • @espeescotty
      @espeescotty  7 месяцев назад +2

That, I don't know, but you know it wasn't cheap. But, obviously cheaper to convert to be legal to keep running in Cali vs. buying new compliant scrapers, that probably wouldn't be as reliable or carry as much payload.

I didn’t think about the California factor. Good grief.

Those have tier 4 emissions engines in them.. they must have been converted within the last few years..
Really hope they find a good home.. so much of the old iron is being sold off anymore.

I think they were converted in the 2005-to-2008-time frame. I don't know where they were headed, but I hope they get to keep working for a long time.

@espeescotty these were converted back in 2016-2017 year range, there's a older video on instagram of them getting hauled by Marco transport to get retrofitted by Quinn Cat to get repowered, the emissions in California were never stringent until 2008 kicked in and later to where contractors had to repower offroad equipment and semi high way trucks.....luv the video footage of these classic beast🔥

I couldn't say with absolute certainty that they were in running condition as I saw them, but my guess is that still were. They all seemed to be in good shape and nothing obviously mechanically wrong with them.
