I put some grease on the freewheel body to avoid corrosion. I was suprised to find some corrosion the first time I disassembled my cassette. No problem with a small amount of grease.

Hiya, a couple of points. Maybe you should demonstrate using the chain whip, it may help people and I notice you skimmed over the bit where you explain putting a cassette on that doesn’t have the insert tool. I think that that deserves a bit more attention as if someone is a novice then it’s pretty likely that they will mess it up and end up with all the cogs in a heap on the floor! So a bit more detail about how and where to put the spacers would be good ( I think anyway) All the best
Thanks for this video - my kickr core has just arrived and is still in its box - called the shop where I bought it asked if I needed any tools to install cassette - they said NO! Even if I can I would rather do it right and have the right equipment considering I’ve spent a small fortune on my setup. I’ve now order some tools to do it right - have to wait a few more days before I get it up and running.
Purely out of curiosity, has anyone used an impact wrench or driver to remove a cassette, and if so does it obviate the need for a chain whip? I have all the manual tools but was just wondering.

It's rather common problem and yes it's a little annoying. You could experiment with very thin DIY spacers to line up both cassettes in the same position in relation to the derailleur. It's a bodgy solution but could work.
Had the same thing with 2 Kickrs even when I put a different cassette. Only a small amount of fettling required but annoying when you're stood in your Chammy and cleats!
im trying to install mine but when i take the bike on the trainer. the frame is not even out. i tried a new cassette and the one that was on the bike. results the same. any help? trying to get it work for 3h now
I'll be installing the cassette tonight. I received the Kick Core last week, but have been busy and looking around for a torque wrench. I have an FR5.2 socket, but it says in two places to tighten to (40NM? I don't have it with me, but that is what I recall). It seems the tool you had was a simple wrench. How important is the precise torque? I would have had it assembled a few days ago if it weren't for finding someone with a torque wrench. As it was mentioned a couple of times in my paperwork, I figured it was probable pretty important.
Specific torque not a requirement, just a "serving suggestion". I've never used a torque wrench to install a cassette, and I've install them on a LOT of trainers and rear wheels.
@@gplama Thank you. As it was, it was too loose with 40NM. I turned it to 60 and then just kept tightening until it was secured. Not sure what torque was required, but less than the 60. I guess I could have just used the tools I had and not sought out a torque wrench.
No need for a torque wrench as the tension from the chain on the cogs under load will lock the cassette down real tight. It's due to this same principle that left pedals use reverse threading so they don't come unthreaded during use. ...Duh, face palm. I was thinking of freewheels, which are rare these days but where this would work. With cassettes this wouldn't work, as the tension of the chain on the cogs would not tighten the lock ring. So, you have to do it manually. I prefer to use a torque wrench but I'm not a bike mechanic and don't trust myself to go by feel like a pro could. Sorry about the confusion. I got started on bikes that had freewheels so part of me is still "old school".
Thank you. I didn't see until after the edit. The whole family uses this account for youtube, so often don't see notifications. Since I posted that last year, I have taken on/off the cassette many times. I switch between my 7 speed (cassette) and my 12 cassette bikes from time to time. Having done it several times now, I do have teh feel. I just make sure there is no cross threads and then tighten with a regular 12" socket wrench. Hard to overtighten with that leverage. I go until there is no play in any of the cassette sprockets. Thank you for taking time to reply. @@kovie9162 -David
Hey Shane, with the Flux 2, my casette was installed by my LBS. When I take out the 15mm quick release adapter the whole cassette is able to slide off the free hub. the cassette stays in one piece. should the lock ring for the casette hold it onto the free hub regardless of whether that adapter is there or not?

hi. i´ve installed a 11speed cassette on my Kickr Core to be used with my 11speed bike. As im using outside quite often, i decided to get a dedicated cheap bike for the trainer. The new bike has 7speeds (2x) with a Shimano Trouney derailleur. My question is, can i keep the 11 speed cassette on the trainer and simply adjust the derailleur to access only 7 speeds on the trainer, or this wont work? i wont be using the original bike cassette noir switching between trainer.

I have the same situation and my Core arrived today. I have shimano 8 speed (cassette is actually Sunrace 11-32). I reached out to Wahoo and they replied that all we need to do is install the supplied spacer just as you would for a 10 or 9 speed... here's to hoping.
Took my Core to my LBS today and they installed the 8 speed 11/32T shimano cassette on the trainer. The tech initially thought it would need a larger (thicker) spacer but once he fit everything on, his was too thick. He then used the metal one provided by Wahoo with the trainer and voila it worked. Home I went and got set up. Initially I had some pretty serious gearing issues but I watched Wahoo's video here on RUclips on adjusting a noisy cassette and just tweaked the barrel adjuster and it appears to work now. In short - for 8 speed use the Wahoo provided spacer and - barrel adjuster video - let the pain begin. Lama great video and your site rocks for just this very reason - community solutions.

My bike however has a 105 11x34 cassette. Will I need to adjust my derailleur each time i change from my 11-28T cassette on my trainer to my 105 11x34 on the bike and vice versa? Many thanks

No, the metal spacers between the hub and cassette. If that’s not the issue this might be one for the local bike shop to have a quick look at in person.
Most cassettes have a recommended torque of 40 newton meters, which is actually quite a lot of force. I'd suggest getting a torque wrench to make sure you're tightening it down properly. (they sell cheap ones at Harbor Freight) Also make sure you have enough spacers, and that the smallest sprocket isn't bottoming out on the splines of the hub. I have an 8 speed cassette, and I'm in the process of dialing in the space between the dropout and first sprocket so I don't have to index my gears every time I put the bike on the trainer. Just ordered a Shimano 11-speed 1.85mm spacer (FW8991) that I think will do the trick based on my measurements.

We bought a 11-28 for the wahoo, though, every time i used my bike on the trainer, noises appear and sometimes the chain jumps to a small gear.. do I have to set the derailleur based on the wahoo ? what is wrong? do you know?

Speeds are important, yes. Ratios not so much. Although going from a 25 on the road to a 32+ on the trainer may cause clearance/chain length issues. I'd keep within a similar ratio range.
No. Not easily or without a solid hack. It'll need to be 130mm rear axle width or greater. The 'fixed' part is the rear hub which no direct drive trainers I know of are. Most spin bikes are fixed.

Hey! I have a wheel-on trainer and thinking of upgrading to direct-drive and selling my current one to help fund it. The issue I have is that my wife only has a 7 speed Hybrid bike. I'm wondering if it's bad for the unit to constantly change the cassette back and forth?
@@Dmart10 I assumed you were wanting to use an 8 speed bike on an 11 speed cassette. That's not advised. If you want to install an 8 speed cassette on the trainer to match the bike - that'll work.
@@gplama I figured it out. SHIMANO HG51 8-Speed Cassette (11-32T). I've been riding zwift on a spin bike which is fun, but the power data is way off and doesn't feel like a real bike. Last week I bought the Apple TV 4K and today bought both the Allez and the Kickr Core. I am super excited about this purchase. Next purchase will be the Favero duo for outdoors.
Hey Lama... is there anyway to control a Kickr manually in ERG mode while still logging miles in Zwift? I know I can use the Wahoo Fitness app on my android tablet to set a power requirement, but how do I stop Zwift from overriding this? I am basically looking for a "manual ERG" mode in Zwift. I have no idea why Zwift workouts limit the power adjustment to ±10%... seems like I should be able to adjust that however I want. I have created workouts, and that's works if I know how I am going to feel, but even then, sometimes I just feel like sprinting, or whatever. I don't "train", I don't have a "plan"... I just ride... basically for fitness, mental as much as physical... Thanks...

One for Wahoo Support. I'm told an 11spd Shimano is the same spacing and 'compatible' with Campy 11spd. If you're on 10 or something different - Wahoo Support is your best bet for a solution.

Hi Shane, just wondering what amount of 'squeaking' is normal on these. I cleaned my bike, put some dry lube on the chain and installed with new 105 11sp cassette. It sounds a bit grindy, i'm wondering if due to different wear rates. My old ultegra chain/cassette has 8000km on it. maybe it's worth trying the old cassette on the trainer? or get a new chain to match indoor setup? Could subside once teeth wear in or do I need to add a drop of tri flow to the jocky wheels? Degreaser could have got in there. thanks!!
@@gplama ok thanks mate, will measure the chain stretch again but am fairly easy on my gear changes etc. Perhaps I'll try the ultegra cassette on the trainer instead. Just feels like the finish of the 105 cassette isn't that good in comparison.
Just checked the chain stretch and couldn't fit the 0.75 (Park Tool) in the links so is still fine in my books. Probably just start using it, the sound isn't too bad I guess.

Top tip to prevent cross threading turn it anti clockwise first to allow it to settle flat on the threads then turn it clockwise

See manufacturer specs on their websites. They all list the compatibility for the freehubs. I don't know off the top of my head sorry.
If I use a 12 speed sram GX do I need any kind of adapters?

You might get three or four gears that work, maybe. Not an ideal setup.
How do you removed the lock ring from the cassette before installing it on the core?
You pry it off with your fingers or a small screwdriver. It's just pressed into the plastic carrier and only threads into the hub itself.

on my Shimano 11-30 cassette the threads on the lockring don't seem to be long enough to reach the hub of the trainer... any tips?
Remove any spacers from the free hub for 11spd.

Sounds like a chain wear issue. If the chain and cassette don't mesh very well you'll encounter issues like this in smaller gears.

Speeds are important, yes. Ratios not so much. Although going from a 25 on the road to a 32+ on the trainer may cause clearance/chain length issues. I'd keep within a similar ratio range.

No. Not easily or without a solid hack. It'll need to be 130mm rear axle width or greater. The 'fixed' part is the rear hub which no direct drive trainers I know of are. Most spin bikes are fixed.

1.8mm spacer behind the cassette on the freehub. The spacer comes with the trainer (and likely with the cassette too).

Hey! I have a wheel-on trainer and thinking of upgrading to direct-drive and selling my current one to help fund it. The issue I have is that my wife only has a 7 speed Hybrid bike. I'm wondering if it's bad for the unit to constantly change the cassette back and forth?
There's no problems doing this... just the time and hassle.
You're better off just replacing her shifter, gears, cable, and derailuer with 11-speed, or getting a new bike.

@@gplama I figured it out. SHIMANO HG51 8-Speed Cassette (11-32T). I've been riding zwift on a spin bike which is fun, but the power data is way off and doesn't feel like a real bike. Last week I bought the Apple TV 4K and today bought both the Allez and the Kickr Core. I am super excited about this purchase. Next purchase will be the Favero duo for outdoors.
Hey Lama... is there anyway to control a Kickr manually in ERG mode while still logging miles in Zwift? I know I can use the Wahoo Fitness app on my android tablet to set a power requirement, but how do I stop Zwift from overriding this? I am basically looking for a "manual ERG" mode in Zwift. I have no idea why Zwift workouts limit the power adjustment to ±10%... seems like I should be able to adjust that however I want. I have created workouts, and that's works if I know how I am going to feel, but even then, sometimes I just feel like sprinting, or whatever. I don't "train", I don't have a "plan"... I just ride... basically for fitness, mental as much as physical... Thanks...
Use the Wahoo Fitness app for trainer control, and to stop Zwift taking control only pair the 'Power Meter' and no 'Controllable Trainer'.

NX should go on the Shimano HG freehub no problem.

Kickr has more than just a cassette. But the Core is a good option.

Is the Core available with a Campy freehub? The Kickr is not!
One for Wahoo Support. I'm told an 11spd Shimano is the same spacing and 'compatible' with Campy 11spd. If you're on 10 or something different - Wahoo Support is your best bet for a solution.

Hi Shane, just wondering what amount of 'squeaking' is normal on these. I cleaned my bike, put some dry lube on the chain and installed with new 105 11sp cassette. It sounds a bit grindy, i'm wondering if due to different wear rates. My old ultegra chain/cassette has 8000km on it. maybe it's worth trying the old cassette on the trainer? or get a new chain to match indoor setup?
Could subside once teeth wear in or do I need to add a drop of tri flow to the jocky wheels? Degreaser could have got in there. thanks!!
Things should be smooth. I'd check chain/cassette/chainrings. 8000km is a LOT of kms on a drivetrain.
@@gplama ok thanks mate, will measure the chain stretch again but am fairly easy on my gear changes etc. Perhaps I'll try the ultegra cassette on the trainer instead. Just feels like the finish of the 105 cassette isn't that good in comparison.
Just checked the chain stretch and couldn't fit the 0.75 (Park Tool) in the links so is still fine in my books. Probably just start using it, the sound isn't too bad I guess.
