OK …. There is an absolute …. Positive …. Without a doubt certainty that I could not have made it this far without your excellent video. I have never changed out a rear cassette and your instruction was perfect. I am upgrading from the Kickr first generation. Thank you so much for helping a “geezer” get this done. Now … on to the Climb installation.
Hi, I gave a new trainer on order. I’m interested in where your anxieties arose, so that I can perhaps avoid them. I do tend to panic when thinks just don’t go together simply and work from the outset. Thanks.
My dad told me set up his wahoo kickr just now, pointed at the bike to use, and gave me 0 tools or ideas how to do this. I'm already stuck at "have a chain whip," at 4:25 hahahahaha. WHY DAD?!?!?!!? (Thank you for this video btw, quite a daunting task.)
Thank you - really useful as I switched from mounting a 10-speed bike with quick release skewer to an 11-speed one with through-axle. In the process of watching your vid to guide me through those changes, I also realised I’d not changed the tyre size setting from Kickr’s factory/shipping default! Riding is so much smoother now.
This is an excellent video! The only quick question is you showed the 11 and 10 speed cassettes - what do you do for 9? Do you simply install the spacer and leave out the smallest gear?
Seems like just keeping it at “road 24” height would be good even for 700c just to keep bikes front end higher for comfort. It doesn’t confuse the “smartness” of the metrics does it?
Do you show how to install a QR skewer axle with U-Shaped dropouts onto the Kickr? My Merida Speeder 400 with shimano 105 group set is like this. Brilliant just watched but now have another nightmare to deal with: the brake block for my disc brakes 😥It never ends! Could you show installing disc brake bike with brake block onto the Kickr?
Thank you for this information it helps a lot! If I have mineral oil Tektro brakes would I need a brake block? Do you think the one included would work for me if so?
Thanks a lot for tout great video. This is really usefull. I have a question, I'll receive a new bike having 14 speed... Do you know if it will be possible to adapt it on the HT !?
Great video Chris, very informative! I’m just wondering if you could offer some advice! When my kicker legs are in the open position one of them is loose and has wiggle room back at the ‘hinged’ end! The other one is good and stiff with no movement ! Any advice on what I could do to secure the ‘loose’ one?
thanks for the video, really helpful. The sunrace 11 speed cassette that comes with wahoo kickr v5 trainer is a 11-28T , while my bike although 11 speed but the number of teeth is different, 11-30T cassette. Will the bike be plug and play to trainer (and vice versa) or will there be a need for RD adjustments (b-limit screws, cable tension, etc) since they have different number of teeth on the cassette? Or is it recommended to install cassette with same number of teeth (11-30T) into wahoo kickr v5 to make it plug and play? Thanks!
I've ridden my kickr twice now and both times the chain comes off the cassette and gets jammed between the axle and the cassette. Is there a reason why this keeps popping off? I've tried adjusting the cable barrel. I just keep off the last gear so I don't risk it popping off.
Great video. Wonder if you can help me. I'm experiencing a lot of chain noise. I've checked the spacer and that's correct as is height. I've tried indexing and adjusting the rear derailleur but I can't get the chain from making a noise in most gears. Is there a special way to adjust the gears on a Kickr?
@@ChrisEnockson thanks for you reply. Noise is mainly in the big front chainring and the 3/4 smallest back. It's a new chain and properly cleaned and lubed. I've indexed and adjusted several times without success.
Hard to say, here's some things to consider. Derailleur hanger alignment. Friction on cable (old cable or new cable) possibly live the cable. Cassette spacers are in correctly. Chain and cassette age. Old chain on new cassette will often skip.
@@ChrisEnockson Thank you very much for your quick reply! However, the Wahoo Fitness profile on RUclips wrote a comment saying you need 2 No. 1.85 spacers. Also, nowhere I can find an example or demonstration of the right way to put a 8sp cassette on. Haven't really tried to put th cassette on with the spacer provided with Wahoo, but would like to avoid damaging, hence, I would really like confirmation on the correct setup.
The spacers (or lack there of) will not damage the cassette or the trainer. If you put it on and it doesnt have enough the cassette will simply have play in it and wont tighten down. If that is the case add a spacer and your good.
@@ChrisEnockson sorted! Used Shimano 11-28 (8sp) and only the spacer (1.85mm) provided by Wahoo. I am riding a Vitus Razor road bike. Thanks for the help anyway! Good luck all with your setups. :)
Hey thanks for the video, very informative. Just a quick question. There is no pre-installed spacer between the hub and the Sunrace cassette straight out of the box right? Just the spare spacer you get in case you need to install a 10 or 9 speed cassette? A friend tells me I should have got two spacers, one pre-installed on the kickr with the 11 speed cassette and another for a 10 and below cassette.
No, not an issue. It the cassette you had was smaller like an 11-28 and went to a bigger one like an 11-32 your chain might be too short or you derailleur cage could be too short but smaller is no issue.
@@ChrisEnockson Okay that makes sense. But what about gear indexing? If the gears have been indexed whilst on the 11-32, would that need to be re-done for the smaller cassette? I'm only asking as I'm currently experiencing a slight grinding noise when in certain gears, difficult to explain but I know its not normal. This stops when peddling which lead me to believe its the drivetrain and not the Kickr itsef.
Tuning will be the same with different gear ratio. There might be a slight difference between how the cassette sits on your trainer and how it sits on you wheel do it may need to be adjusted.
Hello Chris. I have and issue with the compatibility of kickr/bike even though, on paper this shouldn't be and issue. I'm running a shimano 105 11-28 cassette with a thru-axle. My kickr (V5) should perfectly set up for this, however my rear derailleur is unable to reach my top 3 gears on the back. Nothing that messing with limiting screws and adjustment barrels with solve. Can you help me? Thank you.
Without having the bike with me the things I would initially check are the limit screws, the cable tension, the cassette setup, the functionality of the shifter, derailleur, and cabling. If it's more involved than that I would need to see it.
Thanks for the video - super helpful. Do you happen to know if the Kickr supports both 120v and 230v power supply? I'd assume so and you just have to swap out power adaptors but don't see it in the specs anywhere.
With a thru axle do you use for the wahoo kicker Smart Trainer? I was told in the bIke shop to order one so it would be long enough as the one on the bike they didn’t think would be (my quick release was much easier with my old bike I had on the WAhoo Trainer;). By the Robert Axle Project website, it said to order a Lightning bolt 12mmX163MMX1.5 thread; however it did say their axles weren’t for a direct drive trainer but a wheel on trainer. Do you know if the axle I ordered will work with the new Jamis Renegade bike I purchased for the Wahoo Smart Trainer? Thank you, your help is appreciated.
Just ordered this trainer & I am in the scenario of 9 gears (Tiagra 9 speed) - it is an older bike & I believe a good candidate for Zwift training In your video I see your instruction at 05:37 for my case... but my question is: do I need to remove any (2 in my case) rings? If so... which ones? (edit) Thank you for this great tutorial
I've just got the kickr core and have a 10spd ultegra cassette to put on it... Do I just use the spacer provided with the trainer and then the cassette or do I use the spacer that's with the cassette and the trainer spacer too?
One spacer is all you need. If your cassette already has a spacer behind it it is because the wheels are 11speed compatible and have been adapted for 10 speed.
Very bad idea. The spacing is different, it will jump gears and not shift well. It will also ruin your chain and eventually the cassette. I highly recommend against doing that.
Any 9 speed cassette will fit on either the Kickr or the Kickr Core. You will need a spacer behind the cassette but it will be the same set up regardless of which you buy.

Chain whip is for removing the existing cassette. It is not needed for install but can help hold the cassette still on a trainer where it's hard to keep it from rotating while torquing.
