  • NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode we take a wander around the lovely market town of Skipton in North Yorkshire. We wander near to Skipton Castle (built back in 1090 !!!) and gaze at it from the bottom of the castle walls - you certainly couldn't invade it from this angle! We wander around the Castle Woods and take in the various sculptures, flowers and trees before going for some Fish & Chips. Our chosen lunch spot might well surprise you but we actually enjoyed it. A quick wander through the market sees Elliott make a bit of a purchase (see if you like it?) and then through a rather pleasant park. Oh, Skipton is rather nice!

      Thanks T. As Sue will tell you in the next vlog I am “not a suitor of hats” but I think we might be able to make an exception for this one?
      The second hat Sue tried on really suited her but was a touch too small for her head/hair combo, and a touch to large for our budget!
      We do have a plan though on the hat front for her…

    As far as hats go you should order yourself a Stetson western hat. They are great for keeping your head warm in the winter, keeping the rain, sleet, hail and snow off of your face, keeps the rain from running down your back and keeps the sun out of your eyes. Honestly, friends, they are just about the best hat for outdoors that you can get!

    A truly masterpiece of work the trip around Skipton.

    Elliot the wood challenge is a bit too big for you sadly. Shame it's so tempting to attempt to retrieve.
    Hope you are both well.

      @@NarrowEscape1, Southern Appalachian mountains, ranging through Northeast Georgia, both Carolinas, Tennessee, both Virginias, and points North. Very old range of mountains, before continental drifts separated us, ran through England, Scotland and up through Norway & Sweden. The Smokeys are so old that few fossils exist of prehistoric fish and animals--they pre-date the evolution of animal life. Lots of coal from plants growing geological ages ago, though. So, if this modern theory is correct, anywhere coal is found in Great Britain and Norway, Sweden, Scandinavia & points Northeast used to be one of the oldest continuous mountain ranges in Earth's history.
      Back in the 1920s, '30s, '40s, and '50s, the Southern Appalachian Mountains, especially the Smokys, became popular tourist vacation areas on the East coast of the US. Lots of little towns and cities that had nothing to offer but natural beauty of their surroundings built up to become kitschy little vacation spots. Cherokee, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge in the Carolinas, etc. Sort of like Glastonbury or Cheddar Gorge over in the UK. Having been to Glastonbury and Cheddar on a visit to the UK, I can see the parallels between the US and UK tourist traps. In our modern times, there are loads of greenway walking tour areas that have sprung up all over here to take advantage of the natural beauty of various areas. There is a town nearby where I live called Helen, GA that is "Octoberfest"-themed. Reminds me a lot of Glastonbury in that it has a maze of tiny shop-lined streets and alleys catering to the tourist trade.
      Similar geology, topology, climate, and beauty of quite a lot of England. Minus the hundreds of years older history of English countryside, of course. While we do have the history of the Native Americans, too many European-descended settlers in the US refuse to acknowledge that the Indians here were far more than savages before the Europeans arrived. What can you do? People everywhere think that their corner of the world was the cradle of civilization, and that anywhere else was populated by barbarians. Romans, Chinese, whoever, believed they were the center of the universe. Cest la vie.

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Год назад +1

      Wow Dan - that’s one cracker of a message!
      We’ve done a touch of reading up today and the mountains sound, and look superb. Perhaps somewhere we should have visited before now but time rolls on doesn’t it?
      You can’t argue with places with natural beauty can you…maybe one day the stars will align and we can visit. In the meanwhile you enjoy being able to access and enjoy them 👍👍😎😍

    Why is there a silver tag on my tree?
    Tree Tags are used for many purposes including, but not limited to: identification of trees to cut down, trees to protect, treated trees, species and genus names and memorial trees. Tree tags are used by the Department of Forestry, researchers, tree farmers, national and local parks, landscapers and more.

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Год назад +1

      It’s a touch hard to think the trees have been marked for cutting down in this way but we though that was what we were seeing. Ultimately people who know about these things know best with what to do with them but it is sad some of them need to be cut down 😩
