    Sly, sorry for the rickshaw incident. It’s not the money, it’s the principle. Glad the front desk ladies (most likely Suzhou natives) helped you out. I just had almost same experience in Casablanca, taxi driver (called in by hotel front desk) over charged me 25 local currency (about 2, 3 usd). After got back, I mentioned to the hotel front desk, she called the driver, who returned 20 to the hotel. I gave the 20 to the front desk as appreciation😊

    there were two major infrastructure project in ancient time. one was the Great Wall built for defense purpose. the second was the Grand Canal for commerce.

    the dish you had was squirrel fish. it takes a bit of knife skill for the chef to debone, and then cut the fish, deep fried, then covered with catchup and sugar gravy.
    the sweet peas were just for decoration, added a bit of color. LOL

      Fun fact: tomatoes were a rather recent import to China (not native in China), however ketchup, sometime spelled catsup, kerchup, etc is Cantonese for tomato juice/sauce.

      @@chankaneit was originally a fish sauce, sort of like garum in Europe. But it was meant to be a source of umami, and fermented fish have a lot of umami. Later mushrooms were used as a source of umami, and now tomatoes are.

    I do miss China. I did quite a bit of travelling around China for a few years. I've been to 52 cities, and countless towns and villages, all over China.
    Just so much to see, so interesting, and people are very nice.

    Interesting travel route, Suzhou is very close to Shanghai. Now, you can take the subway from Shanghai to Suzhou. I have never heard that Suzhou represents high society. love the background song. SongShu fish is one of my favorite dishes.

      Not the typical nobles, there were lot of merchants and newly developed cities down south like Suzhou in ancient China, they are of different social status, they are rich but not belong to the nobles.

      I think he meant to say "represented rich/high society" in ancient times. During the Ming/Qing dynasties, I think the statement would mostly be true since a lot of the high rank officials were from either the surrounding areas in Jiangsu or from Zhejiang.

    Hey, You need to know this information.
    At the Summer Davos Forum in 2023, Tencent stated that in July this year, Tencent will gradually open the WeChat payment merchant network to international credit or debit card organizations such as Visa, so that overseas users can use commonly used credit cards and debit cards in mainland China. The card is bound to WeChat Pay.

    As someone from Suzhou, the old city district(or you can just call it the downtown area) is mostly for tourists. It is the area where Suzhou's traditional culture is celebrated. If you want to see the technological side of the city, you should visit the Industrial Park district. That is where all the new buildings and high rises are at.

    I don’t know how long you’re in each city or China for that matter, but you gotta come to Hangzhou. I’m leaving soon to go home to the states for the summer but Hz is well know for water ways (canal) and West Lake. Which is one of the most popular tourist attractions for people in China. BTW also pronunciation of ‘zhou’ in Chinese is long ‘o’ sound, like ‘Joe’. And the ‘a’ sound in Chinese is like the ‘o’ in American words like ‘song’ or ‘thong’.

    It is the “East Asian rainy season” around June and July. Whole southeastern China(Some parts in Japan too) is humid and hot during this season. I got used to it back in China but I don’t think I can deal it now

    Excellent video, and an important city to me. Thank you. My ancestry traces back 16 generations, according to kept record, to Suzhou, predecessor of a historical figure. I visited in 1986. Planning to return for visits when I retire. Besides the things you listed Suzhou is known for, it is also known for its beautiful women. Our grandmother liked to remind us of that. 🤔However, I don't see that in my aunts and sisters 🤭Oops. I hope they don't see this😬
    BTW Suzhou is a has beautiful gardens. However, the consensus is that Hangzhou is most beautiful. Perhaps that's in your plan.

    Sorry about the taxi incident, glad the local helped you out to get your money back. I had a bad experience when we visited Florida a few years ago. The taxi driver took the opposite direction and pretended he didn’t know English neither the map, keeping ignoring our protest, ended up over charging us nearly US$50. I didn’t understand how he understood both English and the map first but not after we boarded his car. We never got our money back even after filing a complaint. 😢😢😢😢😢😢 I guess I should be thankful because what could have happened to us with such a bad driver.

    Suzhou is considered as one of the richest and most prosperous cities in certain periods, with Nanjing, a historical capital city near it, and lots of rich merchants, poets, famous figures, even royals like you mentioned.

    Zhang Jia Jie is a prefecture-level city in the northwestern part of Hunan Province, China. A must-go place. AFu Rong Zhen, not far from Zhang Jia Jie, is worth visiting too.

    Influence of Wu Dialect is not that large anymore, but Wu is considered very hard to learn because it deviates alot from standard mandarin.

    Suzhou food is the sweetest in China, it more closely resembles Chinese American takeout food (but elevated), which is otherwise unrecognisable in China

    i have so many fond memories of visiting suzhou, i used to go there for business when i was living in shanghai. i highly recommend visit suzhou meusum, it was designed by the late great architect IM Pei who was originally suzhou.

    Actually, Wu has several branch dialects, with many very localized to villages. But Suzhou Wu direct is generally recognized as then most melodious, and Suzhou accented Mandarin spoken by Suzhou ladies is considered the most "sweet', "feminine" and "polite"spoken Mandarin and often used by female announcers in media.

    When you can speak Wu, it is very easy to understand and learn japanese, because Japanese has derived alot of sounds of words from Wu during the 6th to 11th century. In japan they call Wu Wen ( Wu Language), Go-on.
    There is a joke that Wu speaking people are sounding like japanese and vice versa.

      有点牵强了。吴语属于汉藏语系,而日语属于日本-琉球语系,二者关系很远。不能通过某些借词就说讲吴语的容易理解日语,在中文照样有英文日文借词,然而之间的关系却很远。
