  • Walt Disney World as well as their theme parks, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studios, are in serious danger of losing their market leader position in the Orlando Florida market. If things do not change, the future of Disney World will not just be bleak, but could result in Universal Studios Orlando taking over as the top amusement parks chain in the theme park industry.

Building a 5th Disney Park would be ridiculous when Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios all feel like 2/3’s of a complete theme park.

Epcot and AK definitely feel incomplete. Both are huge parks with a lot of room to grow, which does not count area used by the Lagoon or Safaris. However Studios, forget it. That park is bursting at the seams and is limited by its small footprint. WDW also has two horribly outdated water parks lest I forget.

The other problem with Disney’s current strategy (beyond the many you pointed out) is that they’re alienating first time guests who aren’t as familiar with how to maneuver the parks. I’ve been to the Disney parks a few times since Genie has come out, and I feel like I have a pretty good handle on it at this point to maximize my experience and walk away happy. But for guests that don’t know how to work it, not only did you pay $15 dollars extra PER PERSON, but you didn’t even get the benefits of doing it because it’s needlessly complicated. This will only serve to ensure that these guests don’t want to come back again.
    Anyway, great video!

Absolutely. The trip planning process has become ridiculously tedious and complicated. I believe reducing overcrowding and increasing capacity would also help to alleviate these issues, as with shorter wait times and more reservations available, the need to plan so much ahead of time would be significantly decreased.

I disagree about Magic Kingdom having enough to do. MK only has 20 rides, yet is the most visited theme park in the world, while Disneyland in CA has over 33+ rides. This explains why MK is so overcrowded, it doesn't actually have enough rides to accommodate the attendance it gets. If you visited MK on a day with no crowds, you could finish the park in just a few hours. Disney doesn't want to apend money to add new rides anywhere. WDW will usually get rid of an old ride and replace it with a new ride instead of building a brand new ride from scratch, which doesn't actually help with the park's capacity.

I’ve never been to MK, only been to Disneyland, but I know people who have been to both MK and Disneyland. In regards to the rides that can be found at both parks, MK’s are shorter than Disneyland’s. This means that guests are spending more time off rides than they are on rides at MK which can contribute to the overcrowding problem. Considering that the rides are longer at Disneyland, Disneyland’s rides can have more ride vehicles and thus load more people on, which means more people on their rides. You also have to factor in rides breaking down or being down for routine maintenance. I don’t know what MK’s statistics are in this area, but I know Disneyland’s Splash Mountain broke down fairly regularly.

    • @Talhn
      @Talhn 2 года назад +2

This is true. They changed Spaceship Earth, the Great American Movie Ride, and the Maelstrom in recent years. In MK there are a number of rides that don't appeal to guests over the age of 7 (i.e. Winnie the Pooh, It's a Small World, Carousel, Teapots, Dumbo, Aladdin, Barnstormer, and maybe even Peter Pan). The quality of the rides they are replacing isn't better either, the replacements feel cheap and gimmicky. Additionally, the gift shop theming could be a lot better. When you are in a gift shop, even in a themed land like Galaxy's Edge, you FEEL like you're in a gift shop, not a fictional store that fits into the theme. Compare this to the gift shops in Harry Potter World at Universal - when you are in Ollivander's etc, it feels like a store in that universe vs a gift shop. The lighting and attention to detail is far beyond that of Disney at the moment.
Disney USED to be the best, but they're rapidly losing ground.

In my mind, I think Universal chose unbelievably good timing to announce and open Epic Universe. For Epic Universe, if it has big franchises that get their own spot and all of it is high quality, I won't say that they will shoot Disney off the face of the earth, but I do think that Disney will lose thousands of millions of guests to Universal. So far, we know that at least Nintendo World, some Illumination, and some Dreamworks (highly rumored to be on the HTTYD series) are going to come. Others like Harry Potter (either the Ministry of Magic or Fantastic Beast), Universal Monsters, a possible Pokemon area, and LOTR range from high to low for the rumor scale. But, so far, most of the park is unknown. I think I've heard things about bringing rides from other Universal parks to Epic Universe, but again, rumors. But, If most are true (and even if others are not), that would be huge for not only Florida parks themselves, but for all the parks in general

My biggest reason to not like Universal is their disability design is TERRIBLE compared to Disney. In DW I can go on every ride. Universal only had three rides that met 1. Me wanting to go on it 2. It being safe for me to go on 3. The queue having space for my chair. Hagrid's didn't even have the third and I needed to transfer to a manual chair. Too many people are willing to pay anything to go to an overcrowded park. Disney can’t make capacity increase instantly, but they can keep raising prices until the market finds the balance, and we are not there yet. So because of the laws of supply and demand in the short term, prices will go way up and the service will go down until a balance is found. Welcome to a stiff dose of reality.

  • @frosted1030

    It's not so easy.
Rides on the Disney scale cost between $100 million and $800 million to build, not including maintenance, development, research, and quality checks as well as safety and securing the rights to the IP. Then there's advertising and staffing.
$5.49 Million a day is just the maintenance budget alone at the parks. Disney can't just build more rides for the other parks. They would need to expand substantially, license IP and more. They are not dyeing because of overcrowding. It's the loss of quality and higher prices that have been killing the parks. What they need is to find a better strategy.

Star tours and alien swirling saucers are the only rides that can even really be considered supporting rides. I love Mickey and Minnie’s runaway railway ad I get why they had to remove the great movie ride but they really should’ve considered just refurbing it and building Mickey and Minnie’s somewhere else since it would’ve added another nice supporting ride to offset all the new cutting edge e tickets. I personally think they should’ve added another flat ride to toy story land or they should take the animation courtyard area and build another land like toy story land with an IP that justify some lower tier rides that wouldn’t decrease the quality of the land. They don’t even need to build a full scale ride but bringing something on the level of one of the hundred boat or Omnimover rides in Epcot would work. So ironically Epcot needs more e tickets and Hollywood studios needs more supporting rides

In all honesty, Disney is falling behind. They waited too long to build expansions. Now they are needing expansions at each park.
Magic Kingdom needs some sort of expansion with smart ride systems that eat the crowd and have quick turn over.
Hollywood Studios needs 2 more lands with AT LEAST 3 rides each for me to consider it a full day park. It desperately needs a water ride, and more shade.
Animal kingdom should expand into S America with Emperors New Groove, Up, and Encanto attractions and expand the animal area. Also needs to create a Onward area. The original concept was to have mythical creatures area. This would cover it.
Epcot is Epcot. I’m not sure what they should do there. I feel like it’s having an identity crisis.
Also Disney takes twice as long as the competition to build attractions. Dragging their feet is costing them. How many years has Tron been being built? While Universal is building an entire park expansion?

Should Disney get the Marvel/Simpsons/20th Century Fox theme park rights and remaining Hulk/Namor/She-Hulk movie rights from Universal and expand it to include Marvel superheroes in every Disney park (same with 20th Century Fox properties besides Avatar), that could do the park a favor. Same with sending the scrapped Rocky and Bullwinkle concepts to Universal and WildBrain and possibly adding pavillions based off other countries. And another thing: I would like to see NBCUniversal scoop up Warner Bros. Discovery and buy the Warner Bros. theme park rights from Six Flags completely to rebrand Marvel Superhero Island as Worlds of DC, think of bringing in a Cartoon Network or Animaniacs area in where The Simpsons attractions are at and getting the Batman Fox TV series from Disney and selling the Fantastic Four Hanna-Barbera cartoon to Disney.
Also, if anything, Universal should have its own Pixar Pier-style area via DreamWorks attractions.

I've never been to WDW nor have I had the desire to go. Too big, too expensive, Florida. But having gone to the OG, Disneland a number of times, I will say that I am not inclined to visit that park either. The last time I went was in 2000 with my 3 boys. They loved the resort, tomorrow land, Indiana Jones ride, Pirates ride and there it ended. They were 10, 8, & 7 years old and more interested in the resort pool, koi pond and game room than the park itself. From a parent's POV, it is too crowded and it is a shakedown. There are more stores and food stands than attractions. The delays on attractions are manufactured by Disney to get people into air conditioned stores, restaurants. Now they can track you with the bands, you spend unconsciously with the bands, and you even have give a thumbprint to enter on a pass. The purpose to going to amusement parks is right in the name. I was anything but amused.

Know what's even worse? The way they're gutting high capacity attractions and replacing them with super low capacity ones, which just creates *even longer lines*. Universe of Energy and Great Movie Ride were dated, but they were huge crowd eaters; their replacements don't approach a fraction of the numbers they could handle, and the problem is doubled when you see that these are being done as replacements rather than additions to the parks.
Yes, Disney's done some expansion of late (e.g Pandora, Tron, Ratatouille), but with SO much space in Florida why do they keep gutting pre-existing attractions that could help handle these capacity issues? It's where I do think a fifth gate would come in handy, but I agree that they need to address the existing problems with their current parks before doing that...but man, even then they dropped over $1 billion on the tech that became the magic bands and now all the reservation nonsense they use. Think what that money could've gone towards!
But hey, I guess they'll just keep building new "lands" that only have two rides but *tons* of high-end retail space, since that's what the Bobs have been most focused on since they took over. And let's not even get started on the whole "if it's not based on an IP we own, we're not making it" philosophy they've hammered home, which limits so much of the potential ideas imagineering could cook up to help alleviate some of these issues...like, think of how adding new nation pavilions to World Showcase would help EPCOT, but whoops! Unless there's a Disney movie or property we can attach to it, I guess it's a no go!

That CON has absolutely destroyed the experience and for what? It doesnt work. The Qs are the longest they've ever been. Disney's greed and desperation is on full display with that! The parks were dirty, shabby and generally run down. The rides broke down all the time! Cast members were surly, unhappy and more interested in chatting to each other in-between yelling at guests. The Magical Express has gone so international visitors lost that incentive. And how on earth did Disney think international customers would react to the moustached cast member at bibbidi bobbidi boutique?! Did they think people from the middle east and asia would rush to book after that?! I hope "Nick" was worth the millions lost there. Their film and tv output lately has all been agenda driven and divisive (strange world, lightyear, the Proud Family). No one wants what they're pushing. Their characters look ugly, and the environments are unattractive (elementals). Nothing they do anymore gives you escapism or beauty. Disney did this to themselves

Disney needs to drop billions of dollars in new lands and rides for Disney World, they need more capacity at every park, each one could use 2 new E-ticket rides now to help. But instead they spend their money on Disney + and the parks keep suffering. • @sirbossk
    @sirbossk 2 года назад +14

Yep, pretty well said. It seems that Disney's current model for "handling" overcrowding is pricing people out of the park and passing off meet and greets as new attractions. That won't work long-term, especially with Universal pushing harder than ever to build up their resort and overtaking them in the same market. Disney is languishing while Universal is undergoing a renaissance; it isn't hard to put two and two together there.
Another aspect of this is I think that Disney Genie is making the overcrowding problem worse. Genie obviously exploits the overcrowding problem to drive people who are willing to pay extra during their visit, but in doing so it actually makes the problem it's "solving" worse. Genie allows you to "queue" for a handful of rides during the day without you actually being in them, then return to get on them quickly later. But because Genie guests can (and usually do) queue for other rides while they're waiting for their Lightning Lane return times, they essentially get to wait in two lines at once. Thus, those that pay eat up more capacity than they otherwise would and make the lines longer for those who don't. It makes Disney money of course, but it makes the lines worse, and I bet it decreases guest satisfaction too. I would love to see what would happen to the crowd patterns if they took out LL and released the parks to just stand-by only, even if they don't add more rides to their undersized parks like HS, AK, and Epcot (though they obviously should).

The parks are still profitable. However, they don't have the liquidity to build capacity (or if they do, some of the rides are really on the cheap and miss having that Disney magic). Their most popular rides were developed back in the 60's.
They're in a double bind. They need to keep as many people coming to the park as a revenue generator. Hoever, they don't have the cash to invest in more rides and more cast members to give it that Disney feel.

I agree with your overall thesis. DAK, DHS, and Epcot need to expand drastically to keep up with attendance.
They have the space at each of these parks to expand at least 25% larger at each. Each of these three have flat parking lots, I say build garages and expand into the lots.
Looking at the aerial maps, DAK could expand into their parking lot with new lands behind Dinosaur, and another smaller space behind Pandora. DHS has area left of the entrance/behind Indiana Jones, enough space for several new lands (and build a new entrance at DHS, because the current one is underwhelming compared to Universal Studios). Epcot would be more challenging to utilize their parking lots for expansions (they could, but it would take some restructuring of the entrance), but they've got plenty of expansion pads to add more attractions and lands like Columbia, Brazil, and Africa.
And they don't lack IPs. There's a massive amount of under utilized IPs, like Jungle Book, Aladin, Lion King, Coco, Mulan, Zootopia, Encanto, Nightmare Before Christmas, Wreck It Ralph, Hercules, Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, Pocahontas, Robin Hood, Tarzan, Stitch, Planet of the Apes, Aliens, Predator, Simpsons, Futurama, more Marvel (whatever they can legally get away with), more Avatar, more Star Wars (I'd build Endor at DAK), more Indie, more Cars, the list goes on and on for the possibilities. And that's just IPs there's a ton of non-IP related content they could do, like mystical beasts at Animal Kingdom, a unique Africa ride at Epcot, etc.
The amount of first party IPs Disney has at their hands (including Disney Animated, Pixar, Lucas, Fox, and Marvel) is a huge competitive advantage compared to Universal. Universal on the other hand has to stretch their first party IPs, which are generally less recognizable than Disney's. And while Universal has had major wins with their partnerships with Warner Bros and Nintendo, it's more costly for them to use this approach, it doesn't always work (example: Willie Wonka), and often leads to them just using lesser known first party IPs (example: Bourne vs Bond).
What's really depressing is Disney *should* build a fifth park in Orlando. But generally people say they should not, strictly because they've neglected their current four.
Really, the only thing holding them back is their checkbook. I'm not sure if they can't "get the funds" or if it's just leadership's lack of will to spend money... It's just a terrible situation they are in currently and something has to change.

I’d like to see a compare and contrast between what Disney had and has done recently for their parks and what SixFlags is doing and is planning to do to see if it’s matching up. If SixFlags is trying to compete with Disney by copying them, then SixFlags is truly doomed. Every time I’ve listened to your video about the changes being made with SixFlags it sounds extremely similar to what Disney already has implemented. You know more about these parks than I do, so I’m hoping you’ll take this task on and break it all down.

I absolutely love watching your videos they are always so logical and straight forward. Went to universal with the fam a year a ago and it was way more enjoyable then going to Disney where, like you said, you have to wait in 90 minute lines for almost every ride. We waited 55 minutes at max in universal for the new Velocicoaster ride.

Honestly, Magic Kingdom was so hyped up as Walt's dying wish that it became the new standard for all theme parks for 50+ years. Even though it has 20+ rides, it has the least amount of shows and meet-and-greets out of all the parks. I went to WDW in late August '19 (guess why) and MK is too hyper focused on small children's rides/activities. Hollywood and AK are crowded places but they have more people eater shows and meet-and-greets so it kinda balances out. They need to expand the other 3 more, deemphasize MK, and set the tickets sales goals lower to properly maintain the crowds at Florida. Anaheim has less guests and lower sales projections than Florida and they are crowded, but are they as crowded as Florida?

@@AttractionIdeas Disneyland is consistently higher quality in nearly every aspect. Space Mountain is the most obvious standout. In California, Space Mountain is a sensation spectacular with synced music and beautiful special effects. In Florida, Space Mountain is a run down roller coaster in the dark with uninspired looping music you can't hear.

@@Joker22593 that's interesting because from what I've seen among Disney fans the consensus appears to be that Disneyland > Magic Kingdom BUT Disneyland's Space Mountain < Magic Kingdom's Space Mountain.
Not a fight by the way this is just interesting to me! I haven't ridden either (yet).

A lot of comments state that they feel Disney just doesn't care as long as they are still making money. The same thing was said about the Live action Films (the ones from animated Classics) - why should Disney care if their parks or films are good or not as long as they are making money, and those Live-Action films made a ton of money. So....obviously, the way to get them to care is to STOP ATTENDING the PARKS and STOP GOING TO THE MOVIES. That is the only way Disney will see that there is a problem.

I've had a dream for this design philosophy for Disney for a few years: Every new land must open with at least 1 omni-mover people-eater. If they can't afford to build one, they can't afford the new land.
These people-eaters at their best diminish crowds, while also providing more family friendly rides, and classic dark ride magic. At their worst if they're unpopular, they offer a ride that always has a low wait time. Galaxy's Edge originally was going to have a people mover-like attraction, and that would've really helped both capacity and adding visual life to that land.

Look Disney world is not gonna add rides to parks... if they add one they remove one mentality.
    Disney has 2 options:
    1) open a new park that just helps spread out the daily crowds with a 5 option.
    2) open a entirely new Disney universe in Texas and milk marvel name. get large number of Disney world travelers to replan trips to this new park.

As long as they keep getting more than enough people to squeeze money from, they won't change a thing. The only way it can happen is if they suffer a huge drop in attendance and that's not going to happen for a long time if ever. I don't go to the parks anymore because of the crowds, obviously, they don't miss my money but I don't miss the parks either.

Companies are like large shipping container boats. It takes a long time for them to change course and by the time epic universe opens disney would have just started going through their company "red tape" to counteract universal.

  • @jaball77

I don't think the problem is the number of people vs the number of attractions. I think it's raw attendance numbers. There's just too many people coming to the park, period. EVERYTHING is overwhelmed. Food service, bathrooms, transportation, gift shops. None of it was designed with this many people in mind. On a busy day it is literally impossible to get something to eat. The mobile ordering app crashes over a certain amount of traffic, and all of the lines are 2+ hours long for food. Adding more attractions isn't going to fix that. What Disney REALLY needs to do is build a 3rd park in the middle of the country to take the pressure off of World and Land. But that's never going to happen. So I guess we'll just go once every 10 years and pay our bribes to get on the rides we want to ride and rack it up to "making magical memories."

I had been attending Disney World since 1977 when I was 12 years old. We had annual passes as a family for many years. Now that the parks have become so politicized and raising prices astronomically, my family and I are no longer go to the parks. When we go to Orlando, we go to Universal and Seaworld. You get a lot more bang for your buck and you’re not lectured to about political dogma.
