Brandon is an office worker, and doesn’t work with his hands or have mechanical aptitude. He’s a great guy, and isn’t afraid of taking risks in this world & they’ve built what will be a very successful business. His skillset isn’t as beneficial to lawn care as Scott’s but clearly they have a true friendship and love for each other. From a business perspective it’s an obvious decision to buy Brandon out and move on with a partner more hands-on. But as friends they’re best outcome is find the balance they need. I pray for these guys and can’t wait to watch their journey unfold.
Seeing the employees so happy and talk great about both bosses tells me everything I need to know about them. Sure they have their troubles, we all do, but it’s amazing to witness this. Love and light to all of them.
Scott is the business, and a team player, Brandon is there for a free ride. Complaining about working over 40 hours, complains about doing the same thing all day… how do you think your guys feel? I would run circles around him because if he’s putting in 40 hours I’m putting in 80
I think they should try this. Track everything they do for a week. The following week they switch. Can't hold a wrench, get over it bro and try to see what your dude is going through weekly. I think at the end of the week have a discussion. I think Brandon needs to take a more active role. He doesn't like talking all day on the phone, he doesn't like wrenches. Well, what if Scott decides he is done with this, demands a buyout and starts his own thing. Respect to Scott for keeping everyone afloat.
I love videos like this! Getting as look inside other people's business and thinking about how i can apply some of the advice Mike is giving them into my own business is great! Brandon and Scott seem like really nice guys just trying to grow a successful business.
They really need to hire another person to manage the ops and teams to keep the business running. The one guy may not love doing office work but what else is he good for?
Scott seems to really struggle when it comes to structure of the business. Brandon seems to really struggle when it comes to working in the business. Great compliment to one another.
It's very simple. They need a mechanic. One guy should be doing the office work full time the other should be doing sales. They need a person fix mowers and do the running bringing materials parts . It seems like the company wont survive without Scott great video good luck
Not in anyway. A business with only $800,000 in revenue does not need a mechanic in house. They might need better equipment and a good relationship with a dealer or private mechanic
Right.... Why is the crew not able to figure out how to mow the lawn or how to change a tire..... Never call the boss asking about the weed eater 😂 you figure it out !
Brandon sounds useless. The typical manager… never got dirty his whole entire life. Just steps right into a landscape management role… but never has touched a lawn mower. Probably making more than those laborers will ever see in their life. Then Brandon complains he doesn’t like talking to customers… you know how many laborers would die to have a position like his? Like shut up… you are indoors out of the heat and the cold. Answer those phone calls and man up.
Great video! May I suggest less of a highlight front loaded video. The clips rolled together to fast and was messy. This not meant negatively, you do a great job man
Mike - I am absolutely LOVING these longer show-like videos that most obviously take quite a lot of time filming, editing, etc. My only requests is I would like these done to more "average Joe" type individuals/companies and not nearly million-dollar lawn care businesses. Most of us cannot relate to businesses that are running half a million plus in revenue, but rather sub $100k. The challenges an $800k business faces are significantly different than what a sub $100k business faces. Don't get me wrong, I know many ARE the same, but they're often handling significantly differently. I'd like to see you with a company or individual(s) that are significantly smaller and see what help you can provide them. Until the, thank you Mike and Team for ALL you do. Love the channel. Love the videos. The information posted here is absolutely priceless!
The hope is that there are tips that can be picked up inside the episodes for the smaller operators. Recent episodes have been with companies with 1-3 employees. The problem is it is hard to make an engaging story that is long form without more characters in the story. Larger business just have more problems quite frankly 😀 Thanks for the support!!
Should’ve hired an equipment and lot maintenance guy/helper instead of an office assistant. Lighten Scott’s load and keep Brandon’s job. (Saying this 8 minutes in so not sure if it’s a great solution but seems right)
Brandon needs to take on all of sales. And he needs to understand the basics of ops. He doesn't need to know how to turn a wrench. Most of what I can see is bringing out new equipment when stuff fails. Scott should be able to go on vacation for a week and not have everything fall apart on the customer end. He might have a pile of equipment to fix when he gets back. Also, it seems equipment failure is a big problem that is due to one of 2 things. Employees are using it wrong or it's at the end of it's life. New equipment would fix the second. Better training would fix the first and Brandon is great with writing training manuals.
I have several Shindaiwa T27 weed eaters that are over 20 years old. Knowledge of which various brands of small engine tools work & last long is key . When I worked for large and small lawn maintenance companies, they tended to try and get the best price by following the dealers sales pitch . Keep in mind , most successful small and individual lawn maintenance companies have learned what various tools work the best , so ya won’t see em with just 1 brand . For example the ole school Shindaiwa weed eaters and hedgers outlast the newer models and don’t have emissions junk on em . Stihl fer example is known for their chainsaws and pole hedgers and to include the older articulating pole hedgers . Shindaiwa for their weed eaters before Echo bought em out to include their hedgers . Redmax makes the strongest blowers and hedgers . Kawasaki also makes great hedgers but they aren’t as widely sold as the others . Even with stand on mowers and sit down ones . I had worked for a National lawn maintenance company and they had a yuge fleet of John Deere and those machines could perform under arduous conditions and their engineering was ahead of the others except their price tag and parts is a bit high . So , when that lawn company switched to a different brand of mowers , they couldn’t compare nor hold up as durable as JD . Cross training each other’s roles would also be useful as that’s how the Army works , especially in a SF unit . Ya may still stick to your expertise but knowing the workings of labor and administrative is what they need to iron out. This company has from what I’ve seen lots of young guys and lacks the maturity of older guys from their 30’s to mid 50’s . Keep in mind I’ve worked with men in their 70’s that totally outwork this young men nowadays. They don’t spend time on their cellphones . They come to work & get er done . If they would reach out to Veterans and pay em above average they will have guys with the same qualities that I laid out . Time to finish the video .
I feel you there brother. I had a bad stutter and I still have a little one. My solution was think about what you're going to say before you start talking, control the conversation so you aren't asked to say words that trigger it but most importantly I started hitting the gym HARD in 7th grade at the local college. People seem to not make fun of the star athlete that could stump them into a puddle in under 60 seconds. There were the few that got me sent home for 3 days. Lol
Absolutely! Had my own business and I still have my own business after 15 years and I’m tired of trying to figure everything out myself and I am willing to surrender that I can’t do it all by myself anymore. I have a franchisee introductory call with LEE this Friday as well so I’m looking forward to that too.
I like how this video ended with understanding between partners and it was all knowledge. Awesome 👍 I learn a lot from these videos and from people's experiences, Mike you have a lot of knowledge that you have learned and thank you for showing everyone of us what to do in these certain cases.
What a bizarre and denigrating comment to make about someone you’ve never met. We should all strive to be a manly-man such as yourself with that absolutely gorgeous head of hair you’re sporting… YIKES😬
Brandon is too weak to run with the big dogs. Bless Scott for carrying him this far, but more than one owner never works unless one is willing to do an unequal share. $800k gross is not enough to have more than one person running the show or just an office assistant. My advice is buy Brandon out and train the admin person to do estimates. Or hire someone that can, for the right pay you can find someone. We do 1.6m and I am now finally looking for an assistant. Good luck. You get what you put in.
Seems almost like a Trauma bond.. Scott feels bad it seems at the same time and has tryed to help his friend but now his friend is his buisness partner and unfortunately its nothing personal but just buisness. Brandon has to toughen up and get out there, and learn new things and be a shooter and help Scott or theyll sink Or Brandon is gonna have to leave and make way for new people to help.
I mean you can go months without equipment breakages. and normally it is things that can be fixed reasonably quickly and cheap. A large scale mowing business should always have spare equipment to keep trucks on the load when equipment breaks and has to go in the shop.
The problem with the taller guy (the book worm) is he lets things intimidate him, “I can’t turn a wrench” I have a step grandson that came to live with us and he was scared to death of everything. After 6 months he enjoys fixing tools, helping me tear a motor apart which I gave him his own motor to repair and sell and he made $600. He loves it. The guy will never learn if he does not apply himself. What I can see half way thru is that without Scott there is no business, a high school kid can handle what the other guy does easily for less. Step up or get out, it’s not fair to Scott
They need to figure out whether they want to grow fast or slow. If fast, then they need to promote one of their field guys to OPs. That way the two owners can focus on working together to grow to 2 million.
I think the best course of action would be Brandon to leave completely and only be an investor. Let Scott run the business with the new office girl. It sounds harsh but Brandon doesn’t seem like he wants to do anything. He won’t work in the field or talk to customers. He brings NOTHING to the table. Hopefully he finds his place, I just don’t see it.
Mike i started a business the beginning of this year , my busy weeks i sell $80,000 of sod in a week , but at the end of the week i always find myself without cash in the bank , I’ve probably sold $200,000-$300,000 worth of sod , how can i better myself , i profit $20 off each pallet and sell the pallets for $45-50, i pay the rancher $15 per pallet and the workers get $6 per pallet split inbetween the 3 of them , i add $6 per pallet for fuel and break downs , i harvest about 350-400 pallets a day , i know i should have more money then i do now
Why isn’t the office doing the office work and the field doing the field work? I know it’s easier said than done but why is Scott answering phones and sales when they have office staff to do that. Seems extremely inefficient to me and sounds like the office isn’t picking up it’s own slack. We had a similar problem a couple of years ago until I made the decision that ANYTHING that involves office staff or a computer, needs to be office work. Anything that involves actual work or equipment is field work. My sales rep is considered office. My office mananger is considered office. My field manager doesn’t answer phone calls or sell. That simple.
Sounds like Brandon should be more office/admin/learning how to bid/routing and leave operations and mechanical to...Scott. It would also behoove Brandon to learn some of the other side, too....Ah, now I'm seeing the emotional backstory....he needs alot of patience and encouragement. Good for Scott for looking out for Brandon in school. That was some tricky editing in the beginning, because I thought Scott was a jackass at first 🤣
A lot of this is good info in all theses videos but I’ve been in business long enough to see the signs that we are heading back into a terrible economy. A lot of our customers don’t have money like a few years ago. However I feel like we are making money then we have ever . It’s hanging onto it that’s the problem . with the cost of everything today my focus is on keeping overhead cost manageable and low . You make way more money when your not desperate to pay payments and bills because you Will charge what you really want . When your not afraid to walk away you give the price you should!
A lot of great info here.... I would just add a few things.... 1) Hire the RIGHT PEOPLE, and then figure out where they belong in the org, 2) Words and titles matter. They kept talking about a GM (General Manager) as the TRUE role of Operations Manager or COO. A General Manager incorporates responsibility of sales, operations and admin, not just operations. Bring clarity to the roles by properly using the correct terms and titles to the role. 3) Historically, 50/50 partnerships are problematic, to say the least. Scott and Brandon should come to an agreement whereby SOMEONE is the majority owner, and I would suggest that it is Scott that buys out Brandon to arrive at a 60/40 partnership, based on who brings true value to the business and who is showing the most commitment to the business and investing the most.
P4p I think is similar to "strait time" in the automotive industry. I wonder if they are constantly fixing stuff because of equipment age or careless employees.
You can't have two bosses. Scott should be in charge and be telling Brandon what to do. He needs to promote one of the field guys to a maintenance man.
Sit down with her and have her write the training manual draft based on what her duties are. Then review and revise before it becomes official. In my businesses, the training manual is a living document. But there is no better person to write it than the one who understands the job role the best.
One thing people don’t understand about being A business owner is that the phone calls are worse then the hours. I work with my guys all day. But those phone calls I have to make at the end of the day are death. I almost want to hire somebody so I can just drive home In peace.
Whenever you hit 60 hrs, it's nice to hire another helper. That only leaves 30 hrs work for each of them or 40/20. That's just part of having new employees during growth; they don't have full "value" (revenue-wise) off the bat and it takes time to refill those schedules. That's a hard thing to calculate into your growth plan when you're only doing quarterly reports. This guy just doesn't seem interested in being an owner if he can't find the insight to see where systems can be improved. Sad for his old friend.
Regardless of roles and who the GM is, a glaring problem is that Scott is currently having to get things ready for the crew, make repairs in the morning before crews can go to work. There’s two problems, 1- the crews need to own autonomy to some degree. 2- seems like they are strained on equipment and need to have a pool of spares that help keep the crews on track. As Mike preaches, systems are a must to truly build what you hope to. Regardless, these guys are doing the right thing by getting guidance, NO shame in that. Now let’s work!!
Can we work on the background music during scenes where you're breaking things down? It feels like this was the song the band was playing while the titanic was sinking.
I’m only 14 min into the show and all I can say is the at Scott got into business with the wrong person. Brandon really needs to put his own words to the test and learn new skills, learn the business and the mechanics of equipment operations with Scott. No effort in wanting to learn new skills to help his own business. He just wants to be a silent investor and have nothing to do with running a business. I’ll continue the show later.
🤔 Mike. This will be nice to train people how to do smart engine mechanics.. So each state can have and cities can have those mechanics.. I know we have a problem in baltimore.. The inner city... The politicians here don't care about things like that in schools... They have basic mechanics for cars... I think it would be nice to have a school in cities. If that will build up profit for you too..🤝🏽👍🏾
How can you always spend time fixing equipment? My equipment rarely breaks down and if it does I rarely fix it myself I'd rather just put a machine in the shop and buy a brand new one. Though I don't use ride ons in my business.
That's what in wondering I've rarely had any breaks downs maybe once per season with mowers. The rest they should be fine if they have extra trimmers or blowers in the trailer. It sounds like employees are not taking care of equipment and adding more stress to the business.
Lol i try to be fair with people but Brandon saying he doesn't like being in the office and he doesn't know what to do is such bs. If Scott's there till like 12am then why tf aren't you there with him? It's not that hard to fix equipment and if you asked he would teach you and that would take a lot of stress off of brandon. I fuckin feel for brandon causebhes a fuckin stud and basically carying hisboartner threw life
Thank you Brandon and Scott for being vulnerable and allowing us to come video to help educate the business community!
You guys have greatness ahead and are great at executing. You have a very rare and awesome connection as co-founders and I can't wait to see your success in the future!

Hi Mike. I represent a company called Diversified Robotic and I can help this company efficiently solve a lot of their issues.
Two grown men came to Scott because they had a flat tire. Changing a tire is something even my wife can do.
Scott should train them how to do simple things.
I would run circles around him because if he’s putting in 40 hours I’m putting in 80
Did you watch the full video bro
Brandon should be doing sales doesn’t matter if he doesn’t like talking to customers suck it up and get out there and do it
On one hand, I agree. But on the other hand sales is one thing that you have to be passionate about doing or will fail miserably.
More like what if Scott is in the hospital for a week or worse, then what?
This is awesome. Thanks Mike and thanks to the guys from Simply for putting themselves out there so that we can all learn and be entertained!
Idk why this show was in my recommendations, but the little dude hosting it is so cute 😍
😂
I love videos like this! Getting as look inside other people's business and thinking about how i can apply some of the advice Mike is giving them into my own business is great! Brandon and Scott seem like really nice guys just trying to grow a successful business.
Brandon aint gonna work... buy him out and find a new partner... end of story
Why need a partner? Partners are miserable
Someone didn't watch the video

Your drive to help others in the same space is inspiring!!
Thank you for letting the camera man continue to record conversation without cutting it short. I love the longer conversations.
Yeah, those two are brothers at the end of the day and can communicate. I see them doing well 👍🏻
I've only watched about a third so far. Is there a way to teach the guys basic maintenance and repairs? And just have them do it on site?
Right.... Why is the crew not able to figure out how to mow the lawn or how to change a tire..... Never call the boss asking about the weed eater 😂 you figure it out !

Great educational video!! I’ve been in business for 12 years and my marketing budget is £0 and it works for me.
Targeting more of a broad range when it comes to the Google ad and Facebook ad algorithms was great advice. Awesome episode!!
Great episode. I pray that Brandon and Scott can work through their differences and have a great business and continued friendship
Great video! May I suggest less of a highlight front loaded video. The clips rolled together to fast and was messy. This not meant negatively, you do a great job man

Let’s go ! Great episode. Love these series
What an incredibly great show!
Learning so much.
Brandon has a new name its Brenda 😂 i feel bad for scott. Brandon should be making $15hr for his contribution

Good for Scott for looking out for Brandon in school. That was some tricky editing in the beginning, because I thought Scott was a jackass at first 🤣
Me too lol
Congrats on 150k subscribers
Bro Brandon’s emotional breakdown seems like cap
Cap?
Ya, he's just being dramatic so he can justify his not doing anything real for the business.
No cap 🧢
these videos are so educational and real. awesome job guys
Ramsay Kitchen nitemares. Love these
A lot of this is good info in all theses videos but I’ve been in business long enough to see the signs that we are heading back into a terrible economy.
I like this content is there any chance you could go back to the company’s u help and see how there are doing or if they still exist anymore
I can’t wait for you to start doing follow ups
P4p I think is similar to "strait time" in the automotive industry. I wonder if they are constantly fixing stuff because of equipment age or careless employees.
Like daddy always said .... only ship that doesnt float is a partnership
Love these vids
Theses kind of shows is ur specialty ur The Blue Collar version of Restaurant Rescue 😂
They went to Maaco? I just went there today and they quoted $4000 just for a solid color single-stage paint job! WTH?!
Where do you get your uniforms and what brand is the yellow polo?
You can't have two bosses. Scott should be in charge and be telling Brandon what to do. He needs to promote one of the field guys to a maintenance man.
I bet they called scott for that flat tire @12:23
I post that previous comment with out seeing the whole video LOL
Sit down with her and have her write the training manual draft based on what her duties are. Then review and revise before it becomes official.
In my businesses, the training manual is a living document. But there is no better person to write it than the one who understands the job role the best.
I want a follow up! I root for them i hope they will make it over 1 mil. 👍
Do you think Oregon is a good market for lawn care or California?
One thing people don’t understand about being A business owner is that the phone calls are worse then the hours. I work with my guys all day. But those phone calls I have to make at the end of the day are death. I almost want to hire somebody so I can just drive home In peace.
Lol 4:21. I peep a Jockgo in Mike's hands!
Thanks for the awesome content excellent 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Let’s go!!!
“Mike Andes invented Pay for Performance”
Hmmmm… 🤔
Let’s go!
AWESOME.
Yay 360P max video resolution
Refresh the video. HD was delayed for a bit
Business partner who doesn’t like to talk to customers?
If that will build up profit for you too..🤝🏽👍🏾
Got to be willing to work your ass
Off mowing the lawns or fixing equipment when your needed being a owner especially something smaller .
Brandon guy has it way to nice compared to the other guy
It wont play for me 😔
How can you always spend time fixing equipment? My equipment rarely breaks down and if it does I rarely fix it myself I'd rather just put a machine in the shop and buy a brand new one. Though I don't use ride ons in my business.
That's what in wondering I've rarely had any breaks downs maybe once per season with mowers. The rest they should be fine if they have extra trimmers or blowers in the trailer. It sounds like employees are not taking care of equipment and adding more stress to the business.
I hope Scott is able to get rid of that chain
how cant u be energized to answer phones when its your own company?
They got a flat tire... Wow
I can’t get it to play. Mid video it stopped
YT is being a bit strange for this video. Sorry. Try refreshing your app
Scott put Brandon on his backpack for some reason
He needs to buy his ball and chain out outright
What's the deal with that energy drink Mike?
Wouldn't it be better to drink a coffee with the guys you visit?
🤔
Sad grown man saying I can’t.
Scott needs to buy out Brandon and hire a real office manager.
So the guy working 40 hours got an assistant?... maybe they should fire the office partner and hire a maintenance tech
Sounds like Brandon doesn’t like to get his hands dirty he can learn! Just not a man’s man like Scott! This business is caried on the back of Scott!
I fuckin feel for brandon causebhes a fuckin stud and basically carying hisboartner threw life
Brandon is very unlikable but I hope everything works out for them both.
