OMG. This brings back so many memories when I played this song twice in band roughly 20 years ago. Once as a clarinet and another as a bass. It has always been my favorite festival piece to date :) This band ROCKS !!!!
Bravo, Moanalua HS Wind Ensemble and director. What a masterful rendition of this delightful and devilishly complex piece! The mixing was fantastic. Thank you for this video gift, TycoonSim. I enjoyed playing 1st trumpet in this number with the Pine Bluff, Arkansas High School symphonic band in 1968. MHSSB, you folks took it much more allegro con brio than we did! I wish you much success, much fulfillment, and much fun as you keep making wonderful music together!
You should have heard the Northside Highlander Elementary School Band in 1968. We got a "Superior" rating in competition. Chance was supposed to have been there as a judge, but couldn't make it. We also played this at a festival at Duquesne in Pittsburg.
I would say we are pretty gifted. We submitted our recording for the Texas State Band for middle schools and came in third place. We're from Coppell. A a second Coppell middle school came in first as well.
@MJeffHardyFanA11 no it shouldnt have. we are playing this at my middle school and the flutes (myself included) have that part. we all play that low flute part together
that tambourine guy has epic stage presence but the point of sticking the percussion in the back is so you don't see them. MOVING MAKES YOU NOTICEABLE.
But it was so thrilling to play! If you were in the middle of the group, you would know what I mean. it sounds very much better from the inner part than hearing it from the outside. Sort of difficult to explain.
@Leftclick24 yah but being in the percussion since the fourth grade i know that in concert the percussion's purpose is to add to the winds. and yes i admit the audience is dumb and listens with their eyes but he was just a little too obvious. lmao. come on he rocking out to that part. i wish i could have that much fun with any of my parts
"Please note that there are only a handful of mics on the band, so the balance is not as it sounded in the house. I did my best to mix it, but, of course, the instruments nearest the mics will be the loudest. My apologies." Read the description guys...
Sharon Benning I touch them. I’m playing this this year and I’m a flute/piccolo player and I’m in 8th grade. Last year I played Puszta by Jan Van der Roost
Very fine performance-good attention to musical details! Is this an exchange group from Japan?? Seems like it is as everyone ,including the conductor is Asian. This is the kind of quality we see in the best bands from Japan.
Yeah you possibly did but not this arrangement. Unless your 7th grade glass had private tutors and you were just extremely gifted, there is no way you would have played this particular arrangement.
tambourine kid is my spirit animal

This is beautiful! I played this in orchestra in high school 1970. Thanks for the memories, this is a beautiful rendition of a unique work.
My high school band is preparing to perform this in our next concert, and by listening to this, I've never been more excited to perform it.
6:01 there are three types of percussionists in this world.
1: The one that dances the in the background
2: The focused one
3: The guy that easily gets distracted by the dancing guy
Truly one of my top 5 favorite pieces in the band repertoire!!!!
flutes behind the clarinets??? thats unusual. never seen that before.
I played this in high school in 2007. Great piece of music and extremely challenging.

Dude, that must be the best tambourine player in the world
this is great! the thing that makes this better is the fact that clarinets are in the front row!!!
played timpani for this in my freshman year!! so fun
Trombones at 4:35 are pretty messy.....
OH GOD TAMBOURINE GUY xD! So great.
There are not multiple arrangements of this piece. We played it, with the runs. I'm proud of it to this day.

I played this last year and I was in high school :D
dude it's there how do you not hear it
tambourine was the best. ever.
i feel bad for that principal clarinet player he squeaked like 4 times in crucial parts
the bones let me down..
my elementary school is playing this......jaykay
@ikedasan808styler Even then, looking at the band, their is TONS of Clarinets.
@eggsandgreenham We need to get bass clarinets more known!!!
Friggin Ryan Higa
@MJeffHardyFanA11 no it shouldnt have. we are playing this at my middle school and the flutes (myself included) have that part. we all play that low flute part together
Played this piece back in 12th grade. That was 1998. I played flute and that part was kind of complicated.
The tambourine guy made me laugh soo hard...
3:30 That tambourine guy's jammin xD
oh... Yes. I see what you mean. I thought you meant the composition itself. I agree with you.
ahhhh! the bass clarinet is supposed to be playing those low reed solos grrrrrr! i hate how unappreciated we are :(
No picc?
C'mon Trombones!!! PLAY the danged instruments, don't just blow through them. Make the triplets LOUD.
LMAO! tambourine guy ahhaa
TAMBOURINE GUY KNOWS HIS SHIT
that tambourine guy has epic stage presence but the point of sticking the percussion in the back is so you don't see them. MOVING MAKES YOU NOTICEABLE.
My band is playing this for our competition and I'm in 8th grade
Michael Salm Same this is a grade 5 song...
8:33
Gah.... E, and F for 6 measure straight on the clarinet :(
At least it's gonna go by pretty fast. :D
But it was so thrilling to play! If you were in the middle of the group, you would know what I mean. it sounds very much better from the inner part than hearing it from the outside. Sort of difficult to explain.
High school? We played this in 7th grade!
Favorite part of the song: measure 166 at 6:47. Low Brass Power!

@adamanddustinh what school? im doing it too
where's the double bass..
wheres the timpani part?!

@magicicle Well it's in Hawaii.
more brass at 08:00
Oh yeah and another thing. Students don't even touch "runs" or 32nd notes until they are in high school and I & D was filled with them.
Sharon Benning I touch them. I’m playing this this year and I’m a flute/piccolo player and I’m in 8th grade. Last year I played Puszta by Jan Van der Roost
Oof...trombones are not good. Though the flutes are great.
WHAT. No bassoons? :( btw that tambourine ... High as fuck. I like that haha
THERE BETTER BE AN OBOE OR I WILL FREAK OUT
no oboes?
The tambourine guy looks like my dad.... 0_o
Wow. No wonder the brass is so quiet. Look at 8:39. All the brass has bells down. Ugh...
@magicicle Pacific Islanders. Get it right.
its funny how it ended with a squeak from a clarinet
@speedcubingjubjub oh yea. cool...
hm...yeah the trombones do not have a good tone quality at all.
timpani!!
Very fine performance-good attention to musical details! Is this an exchange group from Japan?? Seems like it is as everyone ,including the conductor is Asian. This is the kind of quality we see in the best bands from Japan.
lol a clarinet squeaked.
FF to 1:20
I think this would have sounded much better with less people and slower...
@chickenguypan defensive much?
all Asians (with exception of some white and black people)
@safesax65 it's because they're asian :3
Yeah you possibly did but not this arrangement. Unless your 7th grade glass had private tutors and you were just extremely gifted, there is no way you would have played this particular arrangement.
So many asians...?
brass was really sloppy throughout the piece and I argee bass clarinets.
Asians... :3
Clarinet over powered the entire piece. The bass clarinet was barely even heard when they had the melody.
our band is so much more balanced, and the bass was sloppy.
Way too much clarinet, needs less clarinets, it's drowning out everything else. Unsettled tempo, band director needs to make up his mind..
