Just wanna give a big thanks for your honesty. I’ve been a personal trainer for over 25 years and I’ve worked with a lot of guys who had “the” physique in the gym who would straight up lie about their use, thus setting unreal expectations and doing a lot of harm to people who would end up thinking that they just weren’t disciplined enough to see the gains they wanted. So many people have quit training because of the lies around gear. So, yeah, respect to you for telling the truth.
I got diagnosed hypothyroid at the beginning of this year and the first cut since then has been so much more effective. Mike, you just solved a something that's been puzzling me for weeks, thank you!

I find it refreshing that you openly discuss your use of gear, the pros and cons of it, and how you got to where you are today. As an almost 50 year old that just got heavily into improving my health and started lifting, it's nice to hear people be open about what works, what doesn't, what should someone use, and what they shouldn't. I am almost 2 years into this journey now, I took myself from 343 down to 218, and then now have gained back about 8-10 lbs of muscle (waist and such still shrinking, but added weight where i actually want it). I went on TRT about a year ago because my levels were below 300, It's been a huge help to me and truly enjoy my time in the gym and changes I've been able to make to my health and future. My wife has gone on the journey with me and has dropped right at 100lbs as well.
I just graduated from college and also had a knee insury so I had to take it more easy on training legs and running. Within just a few weeks so many of my upperbody goals started to all of a sudden, almost like magic appear for me. sleep and less stress is truly magical!
It's pretty motivating for me to see someone as knowledgeable and experienced as yourself still struggling and stumbling and making mistakes and having to kinda overcome trial and error. Makes me feel a little better about messing up a plan when I've learned enough that I should know better. The reality of execution is much tougher than just "knowing" what you should do on paper. Good stuff.

The ROI on hypertrophy training tanks past the intermediate level, arguably going negative when you factor potential time, health, food costs, general attractiveness etc... if you aren't intrinsically into bodybuilding solely for the sake of it.

As someone with untreated hypothyroidism since 16/17 (now 22) thank you for appreciating that this does make it so much harder to lose fat + gain muscle. When I started my fitness journey I was reteaching myself how to walk, as chronic back pain, a sedentary lifestyle (lockdown) + my hypothyroidism combined really fucked my body As you say, it's definitely possible to lose weight + gain muscle. I'm currently in the best shape I've been in my life (in terms of fitness, still pretty fat, but not obese ✌️) + have lost over 30kg whilst being the most ripped (p puny, but wayyy less puny) I've ever been

you must be new here, his transformation was basically a steroid cycle taken for a bodybuilding prep. Training like that will not give you more results unless you are advanced, and even then the benefits are very small compared to your average 3-6/week split. He had been training for years before the transformation, the transformation is literally just from steroids while being in a calorie deficit. Don't use steroids

Also 12 weeks, 8 workouts a week, thats 96 training days. A person should get something out of it. Throw a well fitted diet in there and you could get a serious change

You could’ve even used iodine and selenium, tyrosine zinc magnesium and tested your blood to see if that would bring this up, see where your markers are at, come on dude your smarter then this? I personally think your learnings are excuses as to why you didn’t come in shape. Not to be negative but you could have dieted down with less fats in your diet, diet breaks and less gear. So your fatigue management and overall stress is lowered. Look at some of the pros and even amateur athletes who come in shape, they diet hard in their low days, and high days are relative to that. That’s the discipline.
Definitely agree with the side delt focus over the rear and front delts. You train long enough, you find out real quick heavy pressing movements work the front delts really hard and heavy pulling movements work those rear delts really hard.
You've probably been running on low glycogen. When your muscles are given a chance to refuel with glycogen, each gram of sugar combines with another three grams of water. Add to that, cheat meals are salty, so that will draw in even more water. A kg of fat stores 7,700kcals; but if you've been dieting hard for months, some of the excess energy you eat will got to long overdue repairs of other tissues, even more will just get fidgeted away in an increase in NEAT. So my guess, the weight gain you've seen is unlikely to all be fat, it's probably mostly water.
I totally agree about the delts thing. My front and rear delts get plenty stimulus from pressing and rowing and so I just train lateral delts in isolation. My shoulders are arguably my best body part.
@@Phil_529 It's also just muscle control/ body awareness. If you can do a proper vacuum pose, you can also push your gut out a ton. I can do much the same thing but I've never used gear and weigh half what Mike does. Normally, my stomach is flat but I can look like a famine victim at will.

Exogenous hormones trigger protein muscle synthesis constantly and you'll grow more muscle while doing no training whatsoever compared to a group with no TRT but did train in 12 weeks, by almost double! I'm not saying you don't have to work hard in the gym when you're on gear but you definitely don't have to work nearly as natural who has to lift in other to trigger protein muscle synthesis to occur. If it's just down to hard work then why take them at all? You should watch Geoffrey Verity Schofield. Basically any video that talks about PEDs.

Would love an algorithm for naturals to understand if you are recovering enough. See previously you stated that being tired is a part of the game. And as long as you can make mini prs go for it. Deload when you hit a wall or drop performance. The thing I understood from this video is that you were able to push and make mini prs but your fatigue added up so much that you have to take a month off. How does a natural who doesn’t want to compete figure out the sweet spot?
Agree on the front delt training, but John Meadows always emphasized the importance of really hitting the rear delts, so I’ve always made sure to incorporate rear delt work as well. It has made a nice difference in the look of my shoulders in my opinion.

Ive been on Synthroid since birth and god bless my endocrinologists, theyve always kept me on a high-normal dose (meaning, kept my TSH in the low-normal range), thus blessing me with a suberb metabolism. Ive always been open about how this (the medication treating my birth defect lol) is my little secret to maintaining my weight for my whole life but i have always wondered whether it has anything to do with my ability to grow muscle, which comes pretty insanely easy for me. Im so glad i found your channel. I’ll be 50 this year. I was a runner who lifted weights irregularly in my 20s. I found out later in life I have a mild version of Ehlors Danlos syndrome. I just have the loose joints with no internal issues. I weigh 225 and I’m 6 ft tall. I’ve been a carpenter and farmer my entire life but the last 20 years I’ve become more sedentary. I seriously want to get back into the gym and lift seriously lift for usable strength and fat loss. I have two kids…. Where do I even start?!😂 thanks for any advice.
Took me two years of spinning my wheels listening to all your advice to realize your advice is truly spot on, if you're enhanced. It doesn't track the same as a natural, protocols around surplus/deficit size, mesocycle length, deload/active rest frequency, none are the same for a natural in my own experience.
Every single person is different. Even between enhanced people and between naturals. You need to explore to see how much volume and what types of exercises work best for you.
@@AlexM-YNWA Have been lifting for 10 years, and bodybuilding for 8. Lifetime natural at 6'2 245 pounds, visible abs (not like a 6pack or anything) and have arms that sit around 19 1/2 inches with a pump, so I'm a relatively big dude. I can say with certainty, after discovering the RP app a year ago, and adopting Dr. Mikes training style, I'm bigger than I've ever been in my life. Its a lot of volume, but that's how you get big naturally. Its very fatiguing as a natural, so you have got to get good sleep, and you have GOT to be eating a lot of food. You cannot follow the volume and intensity that someone like Dr. Mike is doing as a natural and not be fueling your body as much as possible. Make sure you are sleeping 8 hours at least, and make sure you're eating at least 4 meals a day, protein with every single meal. Also, mesocycles can be extremely taxing on the last week or 2, so if you start to feel like its too much, just end the meso and start your deload. No reason to slug through a workout that is supposed to be 0RIR only to leave reps on the table. Just take a break, and start fresh again. I know this because I went through it several times over. It's so easy to be the one who pushes your body passed its limits because of "gains" but that shit really catches up when you aren't on steroids.

Front delts, rear delts (and arms for that matter) don’t grow from compound work for guys with long arms. Bench only works chest for us guys. Front raises, rear flyes and triceps extensions are a must.
Hey Doctor Mike, could you do a video on the merits (or lack thereof) of using drugs to get to your genetic potential faster? I've seen discussions on this online but they're always deteriorating into flame wars. I don't see the point of using drugs beyond your genetic limit (except for professional BB), but I do see the point in getting to one's genetic limit faster (and thus have more years living in the best shape you could potentially have), just from a ... pharmacoeconomic perspective I guess.

That lightning, sucking in/pushing out, posture, and shaving all make a big difference to clickbait thumbnails. HUGE transformation.
Looks the same. On a crappy diet and inconsistent workout, no supplements, no peds, I gained 20lbs of muscle and lost 40lbs of fat in 3 months.

@@Phil_529 It's also just muscle control/ body awareness. If you can do a proper vacuum pose, you can also push your gut out a ton. I can do much the same thing but I've never used gear and weigh half what Mike does. Normally, my stomach is flat but I can look like a famine victim at will.
He literally said in the video he was making himself look much fatter in the photo than he really was. We can all push out stomach out especially after a big meal

@@jneel1977and dude, it's SOO much easier. Exogenous hormones trigger protein muscle synthesis constantly and you'll grow more muscle while doing no training whatsoever compared to a group with no TRT but did train in 12 weeks, by almost double!
I'm not saying you don't have to work hard in the gym when you're on gear but you definitely don't have to work nearly as natural who has to lift in other to trigger protein muscle synthesis to occur.
If it's just down to hard work then why take them at all?

Are you on gear....? Your experience is pretty normal if not on the juice. Have a rest, deload, then start cycle again.

Would love an algorithm for naturals to understand if you are recovering enough. See previously you stated that being tired is a part of the game. And as long as you can make mini prs go for it. Deload when you hit a wall or drop performance.
The thing I understood from this video is that you were able to push and make mini prs but your fatigue added up so much that you have to take a month off. How does a natural who doesn’t want to compete figure out the sweet spot?

Agree on the front delt training, but John Meadows always emphasized the importance of really hitting the rear delts, so I’ve always made sure to incorporate rear delt work as well. It has made a nice difference in the look of my shoulders in my opinion.

for those wondering why he looks so different in the before and after pic and couldn't have possibly be 12% bf in the first photo, he does say he "has a cool ability to make it look like" he's a lot fatter than he is. So that's his was of admitting he was sticking his stomach out in that before picture. Obviously he's flexing hard in the after as well.

wait i had NO idea yall were taking thyroid hormone as gear!!! Ive been on Synthroid since birth and god bless my endocrinologists, theyve always kept me on a high-normal dose (meaning, kept my TSH in the low-normal range), thus blessing me with a suberb metabolism. Ive always been open about how this (the medication treating my birth defect lol) is my little secret to maintaining my weight for my whole life but i have always wondered whether it has anything to do with my ability to grow muscle, which comes pretty insanely easy for me. I'd love it if you made a whole video on use of t3/t4 for muscle growth optimization--something i wasn't fully aware of until now!

Im so glad i found your channel. I’ll be 50 this year. I was a runner who lifted weights irregularly in my 20s. I found out later in life I have a mild version of Ehlors Danlos syndrome. I just have the loose joints with no internal issues. I weigh 225 and I’m 6 ft tall. I’ve been a carpenter and farmer my entire life but the last 20 years I’ve become more sedentary. I seriously want to get back into the gym and lift seriously lift for usable strength and fat loss. I have two kids…. Where do I even start?!😂 thanks for any advice.
Took me two years of spinning my wheels listening to all your advice to realize your advice is truly spot on, if you're enhanced. It doesn't track the same as a natural, protocols around surplus/deficit size, mesocycle length, deload/active rest frequency, none are the same for a natural in my own experience.
Every single person is different. Even between enhanced people and between naturals. You need to explore to see how much volume and what types of exercises work best for you.
I agree and what I am saying is the recommendations and protocols given by RP track way better if you are enhanced.
@@AlexM-YNWA Have been lifting for 10 years, and bodybuilding for 8. Lifetime natural at 6'2 245 pounds, visible abs (not like a 6pack or anything) and have arms that sit around 19 1/2 inches with a pump, so I'm a relatively big dude. I can say with certainty, after discovering the RP app a year ago, and adopting Dr. Mikes training style, I'm bigger than I've ever been in my life. Its a lot of volume, but that's how you get big naturally. Its very fatiguing as a natural, so you have got to get good sleep, and you have GOT to be eating a lot of food. You cannot follow the volume and intensity that someone like Dr. Mike is doing as a natural and not be fueling your body as much as possible. Make sure you are sleeping 8 hours at least, and make sure you're eating at least 4 meals a day, protein with every single meal. Also, mesocycles can be extremely taxing on the last week or 2, so if you start to feel like its too much, just end the meso and start your deload. No reason to slug through a workout that is supposed to be 0RIR only to leave reps on the table. Just take a break, and start fresh again. I know this because I went through it several times over. It's so easy to be the one who pushes your body passed its limits because of "gains" but that shit really catches up when you aren't on steroids.

Front delts, rear delts (and arms for that matter) don’t grow from compound work for guys with long arms. Bench only works chest for us guys. Front raises, rear flyes and triceps extensions are a must.
Hey Doctor Mike, could you do a video on the merits (or lack thereof) of using drugs to get to your genetic potential faster? I've seen discussions on this online but they're always deteriorating into flame wars. I don't see the point of using drugs beyond your genetic limit (except for professional BB), but I do see the point in getting to one's genetic limit faster (and thus have more years living in the best shape you could potentially have), just from a ... pharmacoeconomic perspective I guess.
