  • Bristol VR with Catch22Bus slamming through gears and still in Ribble livery. The driver decided to talk to my friend and my friend says that these are better than the Atlantians, I don't have my own opinion on which is better as I like both.

Had a school bus driver who used to smash Leyland Nationals around like this. Surprise, surprise one day the entire gearbox died.

Great video, terrible driving poor old bus 🚌

majority of the Norhtumbria busses drivers in my area used to hammer these like this, very few of them had respect for them or knew how to treat the correctly

You cant keep your foot on the throttle with these semi automatic gearboxes when changing gear!!!

Having drive these in service for many years models from 1968 I totally disagree. A decent driver allows the revs to match the gearbox to the road speed and on the Leyland hydracyclic and electro- pneumatic gearboxes in particular, the release lag was such that failing to temper the revs to gears releasing gave a very poor change. On the Mk1 and 2 VRs their was less of a lag but it proper timing of the throttle and gear shift still gave a much smoother change. The Mk 3 VRs Leyland 680 powered versions needed the same care and gave a superbly smooth change whereas the Gardner powered units were less forgiving. The perfect approach was to drive them as a crashbox, always ensuring that the engine, gearbox and road speeds were perfectly matched.

That'll bugger the bands in the gearbox, driver abuse

I love these old buses. However I am sure that the gearbox is not meant to take a slamming like that from the driver.
Just out of interest. Were there any Bristol VR's with a Voith gearbox? I am just curious :).

VR rule even if u treat them bad slamming gears. i bet new busess will not be around in20+years like the VR

The same was said when the VR replaced Lodekkas and pd2/3 and ikewise, when our Leopards and REs were replaced by nationals. I think the main difference are that newer vehicles are over engineered and very simple to drive. The job now requires very little skill, just point and steer with one finger..

I think the main issue with this driver is more the fact that he's lifting off the throttle while he's still in gear and then going straight through the gate with the gear selector. It's quite evident by the bus kangarooing about that that's what he's doing. What he should be doing is doing the pause while in neutral, not in gear. Given that a lot of drivers these days have never driven a semi automatic bus it's totally reasonable to assume the minor error is from unfamiliarity. Not necessarily doing the vehicle any harm driving like this but it will be awfully jerky

What do you mean, won't harm the gearbox? It will overheat the gearbox brake bands. It will cause extreme excess wear. It will cause excessive head movement on the passengers necks. It is not a minor error, it is very poor driving. Moving off, why does he thrash it in the lower gears? Totally unnecessary. In many places he powers into hazards rather than just easing off the gas meaning he drives unnecessarily close at too high a speed to other vehicles. At about 7:50 he passes too close to a bicycle. His awareness and anticipation are abysmal. The only good points are his manner with the customers and allowing them to be seated before moving off. In my days as a PSV instructor, he would have been taken off the road for re-training.

@@stevesales4263 no it won't. Slipping the gears with straight through gear changes whilst foot to the floor will wear the brake bands. Lifting off while still in gear will simply result in a bucking kangaroo ride.

@@BusThrash Read my comment. I said nothing about foot to the floor, I said tempering revs to match engine and road speed. Having 44 years psv experience trading and driving buses I do have certain knowledge.

Whoever was "driving" this needs to be put on toilet cleaning duty until they learn how to use a vehicle properly. Especially one that's 45 years old and had had a lot of man-hours put into its restoration and maintenance.
