Before I saw this, I envisioned maybe 15 or so soldiers coerced by the high priest to arrest Jesus. Now, I realize that it was very similar to Paul's arrest where hundreds of soldiers were called out , the entire barrack, just in case there was an insurrection of the people. This also sheds new light, for me, on the foolhardy drawing of a sword by Peter. (There were two swords among them, they had remarked earlier, so someone kept his sheathed.) No wonder the disciples all forsook Jesus and fled. From the human viewpoint the opposition was overwhelming in the extreme.Thank you so much for your insights and dedication to this ministry.
Thank you GFA for unpacking the details of this amazingly powerful section of the story of Jesus. The fact that Jesus maintained His composure with 600-1,000 soldiers (and their threatening weapons) surrounding to arrest Him is sufficient evidence of how divinely powerful Jesus is! There is nothing to fear with Jesus leading!!!
Maybe I missed something in the video, because I was left thinking about the alternative: When the Greek texts of Matthew and John mention troops with different names - whose name indicates the number of men in a group - is it still impossible that the text means soldiers who are PART of these forces - who BELONG to these forces, but the group in question didn't necessarily have to be completely on the move? Would it be reasonable to think that even 600 men would be ordered into action to get the upper hand on their target? If there were only 100 men, then of course they would belong to the same group with the other 500 men - so they would be one group despite the fact that the whole group was not ordered to move. Based on the texts, should it be said that all the men were ordered to move in that situation?
@@MR-ub6sq great questions. Of course there are no guarantees of how many people were there: the whole group or the part of it. However, several aspects allow us to conclude that it was the entire group. 1. The military unit itself means 600 men in full. Nothing indicates that it was partial. 2. The commander was the commander of the entire unit (tribune). If there was a partial number of troops, let’s say 100 or 200 there would be centurions (commanders of 100), not a tribune. 3. Historical records show that Romans didn’t play games with messianic gatherings. Josephus mentions about 20 other messianic uprisings which Roman’s suppressed with great force. Always bringing thousands of troops. So, most likely when the Romans got news about messianic gatherings near Jerusalem on Passover (with tens of thousands pilgrims in Jerusalem) in the middle of the night, they didn’t take chances and gathered the entire cohort.

Great lesson Stan. What a blessing it is to study our Lord's word on a microscopic level. Even though it takes more effort, what is more important in life than taking the time to get to know our Creator, Lord and Savior. I'm looking forward and glad you will be bringing these jam packed nuggets of biblical gold. May Iesous keep blessing your labor in His Word.
Acts 4:26-28 also suggests that the plot against Jesus was organized by the Jewish high priests, the sect of the Pharisees and the commander of the Roman garrison together, seeing that the tribune was also present personally. It means that the roman military officials were involved in it at first as if it was an urgency, without the knowledge of the governor, Pilate, whom they approached after Jesus' arrest. The roman garrison may have been involved by the Jews from the beginning, because their intention was to get the execution verdict from Pilate. So they needed the roman garrison to be involved so that they could present it as the capture of an anti-roman rebel.
Wow, this is very useful. It also helps explain why Pilate was so afraid of Lord Jesus, because Lord Jesus had knocked down these hundreds of men merely by saying "I am"; this is why Pilate's fear of Ceasar had to be leveraged in order to get him to execute Lord Jesus. One question I have, is why we should suppose the Jewish "officers" would be of similar number to the Roman soldiers. If the Romans provided the muscle, then the Jewish officers may have been just the officials who were representing the Jewish interest and coordinating with the Romans. I guess this is based on what you said about Matthew's account, but Matthew's account of great crowds makes no distinction between Romans and Jews in that crowd; we only know that the man whose ear Peter cut off was a Jew, which indicates that Jews were in the front with the Romans backing them up, but does not indicate the number of Jews. The final numbers you give, seem to account for this possibility, but you didn't directly state that it's possible that the Jews were fewer in number. I might imagine the Jewish portion to be about one hundred or two hundred men; not that they couldn't easily be greater, but I don't see anything which indicates whether or not that is the case.
Thanks for a suggestion. I will consider. For now: children = Israelites, dogs = pagans. Jesus says that he came first to minister his own people (Israel) as they were the covenant people.
When Jesus said “I AM” do you believe the 600-1000 men were knocked down by the power that came out of Jesus” or they felt the need to fall to the ground (they bowed) due to who he was? I believe they were knocked to the ground and Peter then went after the leader and cut off his ear.
Well Romans and Greeks had mythological sons of gods... and Jesus had healed sooo many, rumors must have spread like ☄️ so they likely expected some supernatural power 💪 to take place... and Jewish thought maybe wondering if this is a prophet like Elijah 🔥 from heaven to consume them like we read Elijah did.

Thank you for your information!
My pleasure!
Thank you, Dr. Kondrat! Big crowds and their leaders are afraid of the Spoken Word today as they were then!
I myself was blown away when I read the story in Greek myself. Buckle up and enjoy the study.
Great teaching. Thanks alot.
Thank you for this explanation! It helped me to better understand and envision what happened to the Messiah.
Happy to serve! Shalom!
Fantastic study..thanks for sharing!

Wow. This is incredible! No wonder the disciples were very afraid and ran away. Much respect for John.
And for Peter who wanted a fight!

I always thought they were knocked down.
Wow. What were they afraid of? It is almost as if they already knew Jesus is God. Let that sink in.
Great perspective!
