He almost drops the ball here too and that's probably why his jump didn't have the normal energy. If you look closely he is not in full control of the ball just before taking off.
Lakers trailed at halftime and won 102-89. Michael Jordan scored just 21 points on 6-20 shooting. The Bulls would then win 19 of their next 20 games after this game.

he missed because he wasnt able to elevate as high as he wanted.. watch him come down and dunk the ball on the front of the rim.
but it is also partly due his fumble of the ball as you guys have pointed out.
and perhaps the crossing of legs too
Lil bit too far out... haha... if you watch closely, just a split second before he takes off, the ball slipped out of his hands, he was barely holding the ball in his fingertips.
He didn't take off too far out! He just missed the dunk.
@PjCphatty89 it did look like he took off too far out. that was a lot farther than he usually takes. he mistimed the drive to the basket.

I was watching that game on tv when it happened. Those air jordan shoes were my favorite model and color combo. Looked cool from far away.
I remember there was a lot of hype coming into this game. December xx, 1991, Bulls, Lakers, The Rematch, only on TNT. ahh the memories.
Thanks! I don't have many full games thanks to parents taping over them but I used to make dunk compilations with two VHS recorders. So basically most of the dunks from the games and NBA Actions etc were saved.
anyone got the Chick Hearn call on this one? I had it taped but years later found someone recorded over it! =(

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I was ten years old, in the building, and it briefly shattered all of my childhood illusions. I still ended up a Bulls fan, but 30 years later this is the pre-eminent in-person Bulls memory of my life!
i believe the correction is that he went too far IN instead of too far OUT. like someone said....he hit the back rim. LOL.

it hit the front rim before it hit the back rim. he took off too far out.
He fumbled the ball as he was getting ready to elevate. He lost his concetration, that's why he missed the dunk.

I remember this game also. I actually have that dunk from different angle on one of my MJ mixes.
I remember this game very well, after a superior dominance over the L.A. Lakers in the 1991 NBA Finals the following season the L.A. Lakers come into Chicago stadium without Magic Johnson and beat the defending World Champions on their own floor. I think the Chicago Bulls really underestimated the L.A. Lakers coming into this game. The Chicago Bulls normally would have the game tucked away in the fourth quarter especially playing at home!

i only member him fuckin up only about 2 or 3 dunks 2 of which were against the lakers lol. i member wen he was aaaaaalllllllllll by himself and he was in LA and when he went to gather himself he lost the ball off his leg. and the 3rd was in the 2001 all-star game of course i member that dunk like it was yesterday. Break away with everyone watching and it hit the back of the rim

Maybe one of two boneheaded plays in Jordan’s entire career (at least with the Bulls). That was some ‘Not So Air’ Jordan. As a young Laker fan in Greater Los Angeles, I remember watching this game on KCAL Channel 9, and when Jordan missed that dunk, longtime Laker play-by-play announcer Chick Hearn went nuts 😂
