    The credits should mention that this poem is by Goethe and comes in his play Faust in which Gretchen is at her spinning wheel thinking of Faust and all that he promised. The piano clearly mimics the spinning motion of the wheel. Faust is well-known for making a pact with the devil (Mephistopheles). For Gretchen all will end in tears as the song makes clear - meine Ruh' ist hin, mein Herz ist schwer........

      The piano mimics the spinning motion of the wheel which in turn mimics Gretchen's ruminating - her thoughts, out of control, revolving constantly around her beloved, coming to no end, starting anew, but not in a good way.
      Gretchen's Song is also known as an accurate depiction of a mind in the throes of a severe depression: 'Mein armer Kopf ist mir verrückt/ Mein armer Sinn ist mir zerstückt'

    i have to say, the singing is top rate, the voice beautiful, but all that allegory or pantomime made me cringe a bit. This is a personal opinion , but lieder seems to command a certain sobriety from the performer . Lied is a microcosm and suddenly to have full fledged operatic overkill thrown on top makes the singer look like another YT meme.
    Wallis Gionta doesn't need that, her voice and presence does it perfectly without artifice.

    • @238assante
      @238assante 6 лет назад +3

      haha, ok my YT comment was totally gratuitious , thanks for elegantly putting my nose right in it ., totally deserved. I still stand by my opinion about the acting but i also see your point regarding that particular context. In any case, the singing is lovely no matter what. :)

      I agree with you, although she's a beautiful girl I prefer only listening...I don't think Schubert needs all that operatic moves...by the way in this video at least it was in line with the character of the song, excellent performance though!

    • @wallis.giunta
      @wallis.giunta  5 лет назад +11

      Exactly so! Thank you. I have always felt that this Lied, as an exception, is more like a little opera itself. But generally, I would say Schubert can be more reserved :)

    • @t1serres131
      @t1serres131 4 года назад +5

      I couldn't disagree more. I believe lieder is vital and compelling enough an art form to lend itself to different approaches of interpretation. Her performance was entirely convincing.
      I once heard the great Mady Mesplé give an art song recital and, a creature of the stage born, she acted the hell out of every song. Wolf's "Kennst du das Land" she delivered as a momentous three-act opera. And her final piece, Poulenc's "scena" La Dame de Monte Carlo, was a veritable tour de force. I didn't find her artistry compromised by her dramatic flair.
      At the other end of the spectrum, I was a devoted Elly Ameling groupie for many years and she was always pretty buttoned up, expressing all through her voice and facial expressions (her lighter fare being a joyous exception). In Gretchen, she would usually give a portamento at the final "ver-GEEEEEEH-en sollte" .... a vocal mannerism that some might think tasteless but, once again, justified by the conviction and artistry.

    In the early 19th century, there was no electricity or power generators, everything, including the spinning wheels, was being used with hands, not machines or electricity, .... now, imagine if a person would try to use the spinning wheel to keep up with the pianist, would be impossible. Excellent capability on both sides, but not authentic 19th century interpretation. It was way too fast. Also, it had to be a bit more “nachdenklich”.
