  • It's Desmo time!
    A big thanks to the guys from The Bike Specialists for giving us the opportunity to ride such an iconic bike. We all know about the Ducati Desmosedici RR, along with the Honda RC213V-S it's the closest thing to a MotoGP bike for the road. Another very good day at the office for Chris!

    Riding one of these bikes is one thing - OWNING one is another story altogether, back in 2015 I found myself in a position to buy any bike I wanted - I ended up with six Ducati, a Kawasaki and no Wife, (she left in disgust) The D16RR is a cranky expensive razor and I loved it, mine came with the 'customer sport' exhaust and ecu, so it was like a fish out of water until you hit the track (or open road) - I live in Australia so Phillip Island GP circuit is only an hour from home, it`s the perfect place to sort out which bike can do what - my 1198R came out on top for lap times, it was a former superbike in the domestic series down here and was a wild ride, but the Desmosedici was a Dream Ride Indeed.
    Now I`ve made it to 60 y/old I`ve hung up the leathers and sold-off the bulk of the bikes, but I kept one - the Desmosedici 👀

      Oh Robert, you own my dream bike! Its unparalleled beauty and its racing aura drives me crazy!
      I'm from Rome and I own a few bikes too (all strictly Italian: Ducati Panigale V4 S, Ducati Diavel, MV Agusta Brutale 1000RR, Moto Guzzi V7 Centenario, Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello, Aprilia Tuono 660 Factory and a Vespa 125 GTS SuperSport) and I'm always tempted to sell some of them to buy a DesmosediciRR: currently, there are 2 DesmoRR on sale in Italia, at 100.000 and 120.000 Euro.
      Even my woman would be ok with that as she loves bikes too, yet, to be honest, I perfectly know that I'm not such a great rider and I'd be scared as hell on a beast like that, both for me and the damage I would made and that stops me. I'd like to be more courageous but I can't, so for now I can only dream it. It's my favourite bike ever, by miles. You were so lucky.

    • @greyhound3561
      @greyhound3561 Год назад +2

      @@Davide.A.Visconti-Borghese Well it sounds like you`re doing ok for rides, If you took the engine from the V4S and stuck it in the Tuono 660 Factory bike it would be like a civilised D16RR - sort of, I agree with the comments about it`s looks - no other bike comes close to a D16RR for sheer beauty and they are actually very comfy - even for a tall person like me..

    • @Davide.A.Visconti-Borghese
      @Davide.A.Visconti-Borghese Год назад +2

      @@greyhound3561 Yeah, I'm tall too (185cm) but I don't care about that... my biggest problem with Ducati bikes is one and just one: the heat, especially during Italian summers, is almost unbearable. But that's the price to pay for a V engine, I suppose.
      (the V4 engine stucked in the Tuono it's nothing but a brilliant idea 😂)

      @@Davide.A.Visconti-Borghese I had to sit and look at all of mine for two years while a hip injury healed, I got desperate and took the desmo out for a ride but I was lucky to get home - thought I was ok but realised half way I was far too stoned on the pain killers I was taking and should have been driving my armchair, I even clipped a curb - which woke me up and I turned back - almost the most expensive crash I ever had ! 🤣

    The Ducati equivalent to the F40. Analog and very, very special. I remember when they were announced trying to do the sums on how to buy one. It was never going to happen.

      The comparison is that it's Italian, red and you can see the weave of the carbon through the paint. I don't see the appeal to this tbh, but the F40 is the best supercar ever made, still looks amazing today!

    For mind blowing concept, design, build, and rarity, it would have to be Honda's 1992 NR750 Oval Piston for me personally. I don't care if it's slow and heavy, not powerful, not a race bike etc., etc. I just don't think anyone will ever top that for sheer amazement in spectacular engineering.

    In re-watching this for the umpteenth time, while stuck with Ducatis in the garage and my foot in a walking boot, I got goosebumps, seeing and hearing the bike. Chris’s description of its elemental, raw characteristics reminded me of Aldous Huxley’s description of our brain and nervous system as a reducing valve, protecting us in our daily survival by reducing consciousness to a “measly trickle” (The Doors of Perception/Heaven and Hell). This was the Ducati designers and engineers tossing out the reduction valve and gifting us the full-tilt experience; a rushing river in place of a measly trickle.

    I'm glad you said they did some without the stripes on the side as years ago I was sure I saw one on the road.
    It was definitely a Ducati and was definitely not a v twin sound.
    It was also before they made the 4 cylinder superbike.
    I'm even more confident I saw one now.

    In terms of styling, the Superleggera is very similar to other bikes now, the Desmosedici is a museum piece of art like the 916, it looks incredible, and nothing like any other bike, ever. It's a track bike for people who don't care if they bin it or to be kept in the garage and looked at for the few seconds it's not covered. I think you're right there, Chris, it's a Ducati, just like having an Italian girlfriend, she'll let you know when you're doing it wrong and dump you when you're not good enough...

    Awesome review!!
    Your description of this bike reminds me of the first time I 'demo rode' the first year Ducati 1098...no rider aids, stiff on/off clutch, stiff throttle, super sensitive grabby brakes, loud and viby engine, crazy low end torque, hard and stiff suspension, front wheel in the air at every twist of the throttle in the lower gears, very limited steering lock.
    I felt that it definitely wanted to kill anyone that dared to ride it. Loved it! And so, I bought the Monster s2r1000 instead.

  • @jonmercer8390
    @jonmercer8390 2 года назад +2

    I think you summed it up perfectly Chris, the D16RR is an event every time you press the starter. The exhaust note, intake and just how fast the motor spins up is incredible. Admittedly they're not an easy bike to live with on the road, you can just burble along at 30mph quite easily, but get it above 10K and it'll rip your arms off.
    They only really make sense above 100mph, everything just works then, the chassis comes alive and the stiffness seems to fade away. It's the exhaust/intake that is just all encompassing when you are on one, you cannot hear anything else the sound is all around you.

    You lucky sod, in my 45 years of riding and owning close to 40 bikes over that period only two bikes have scared me ,the original two stroke Kawasaki H2 and the Ducati Panigale 1199 ,which IMO shows what a beast the 1199 is considering it has nearly 3 times the power of the H2 ,a fantastic chassis along with modern tyres which are light years ahead of the H2s 1970s marble mimicking tyres, yet with all these massive improvements it still rivals the old "widow maker" as the scariest bike.

    Many times I nearly bought one, but the price at that time 45/50k seemed a lot and I was never quite sold on it, however, 2016 I walked into Ecima and there was the centre stageSL1299 in a glass box, the colour, twin exhausts, those wheels even though I had and still have the bonkers 1199 base I came back and told the wife I just seen the bike I would design, she said buy it then! Yep more money than the Des but that was the one and maybe you should consider that with the 1199SL dream, I still now and again think to buy one but now the price has risen, but better in the bike than in the bank these days! The SL1299 is miserable to ride on the road but every now and again I do, mainly because I know what it can do and it’s frustrating and like the 1199 its always bullying you to do what it want to do but its not for display!

    My dad owns #401 and he's got maybe 6000km on it. As mentioned in the video, it now sits inside his house on display. Also, hearing this bike in person does not compare in the slightest to hearing it in a video - it's just so loud and angry.

    Something as close to the motogp version would be the RC213V-S. It would be amazing if you guys could sort one out.

    was waiting for this one such a shame you didnt show much footage,or get the bike over on its side as i saw the tyres were pretty untouched ,love to see more on this if you could

      Ditto, but one of the problems with these is that the 16" rear tyres are incredibly hard to get hold of, so that means rubber well past its sell-by date. Pushed a couple of times and got a sharp warning each time so I opted for the option that didn't end up with £70k in a hedge!

      im lucky to own one and ive got 19000 km on it every thing you said is true but it took me 2 years to start enjoying it on the road ,you never see 5th and 6th gear , im surprised you didnt talk about how loud it is ,the bike is a full encompassing bike you can never cruze the throttle to quiet it down and you never look at the speedo and you can get a good feel from the suspension it just takes time ,they also chew petrol insanely .

    I love how it sounds like a tractor when you start it up and then it sounds brutal on the throttle.

    Chris, always enjoy your channel and lucky bloody you!! No chance of buying one when it came out so I got a second gen ZX12R Ninja that pulled 170HP on the dyno. The operator said it must have been a "Wednesday" engine. Now I joke that it had "biological" traction control and anti-lock brakes. (me) If you did win the lotto and got one, would you really thrash it on track ??

    No rider aids, so likely to kill all but the most experienced riders these days (since we’ve had rider aids for over a decade and most, if not all riders ‘lean’ on them, including gp racers) excluding the delusional ones that have convinced themselves that they don’t… or you could just gently cruise on the bike with some light spirited riding, as most owners will unless they haven’t yet taken it ‘out the box’. It isn’t forgiving in any way, so pretty ‘hairy’ too! Looks fab and if you can hear past the noisy rattly clutch it doesn’t sound bad either. Possibly a classic of the future (since most people are already “gushing” over it with their rose tinted views and opinions, but won’t (and hasn’t) appreciated like property. The RC213V-S has, on the other hand made a very appreciable difference. The real solid investments are still in the old ‘Old’ classics.

    My absolute dream bike , even above a 916 or early F4
    Was it a previous bike world that stripped and rebuilt one ? The guy that did the mechanics was excellent humble but knew his stuff .
    I just look at it with its dolphin face saying I won’t hurt you ,,,, no I’ll eat you alive . I don’t do the lotto , maybe I should!
