I have an easier way. Straight to washing machine using the gentle cycle option. Finish with dryer. My Red Heart Super Saver yarn projects always ends up feeling like cashmere. The cheap acrylic yarns become soft because the sizing that was put on at the manufacture is washed out. After pulling your project out of the dryer use an electric or battery sweater shaver to remove the fuzzies that were caused by the washing machine. I only recommend this way for acrylic yarns.
Big Wanda Knows heat or just air dry? Dryer sheets too?
I put fabric softener in the washing machine, then a dryer sheet in the dryer! They soften up beautifully! I've done it on more baby blankets than I can count!!
What fabric softener do you use? @@amyralls6218
The yarn used in this video was Lionbrand Pound of Love, which is 100% acrylic. Katie handwashed it in shampoo and warm water first, then soaked it in hair conditioner and cold water, then machine-washed it on the delicate cycle, then machine-dried it on low heat setting. The entire process made the blanket softer, but this is due more to the extensive manipulation of the blanket than to the shampoo and conditioner themselves. Acrylic is basically a non-porous plastic, so the yarn was not really affected by the shampoo and did not absorb the conditioner to become softer. Any shampoo or conditioner residue would be dissolved by the detergent and washed away during the machine-washing step. So really you don't need to use shampoo or conditioner to make a new acrylic blanket softer; but all of the agitation and manipulation involved in this process would help settle the yarn, work out the kinks and snags and lint and rough spots, etc. You may also be interested in steam-blocking an acrylic project to help settle and shape the yarn.
froggy doodle awesome information awesome information! Some years ago when fleece first became the thing I read that fleeces a plastic so when you're washing fleece you must not use Liquid detergent because it will not clean it you have to use powder detergent. So I'm guessing the same is true for acrylic yarn.
froggy doodle since you know about yarn would you be able to help me with the question. I'd like to crochet a large twin size Afghan. I want it to be soft it doesn't have to be baby soft yarn but I would like it softer than the standard Red Heart yarn I've been able to purchase at Walmart. I ain't don't have any other stores locally to purchase yarn so I'm planning on ordering it online. So if you can suggest a good yarn that's a nice soft Afghan yarn and also a place that I can purchase it from online I would appreciate that.
rita pita, hobby lobby. I LOVE THIS YARN! its a dream to crochet with!!!

Thank you 😊 💓
Hi Katie. I did use this method when I made a bib with Red Heart Super-Saver yarn. The only difference was that I let it soak in the conditioner solution, ( I just used dollar store conditioner) overnight. It worked a treat, it came out soft as baby yarn. I was not courageous as you to try it on a blanket first but you are right it is noticeably softer.
+TizianaTina Oh, thanks for your experience. I think RHSS is a bit stiffer than Pound of Love so it is great to know it helped.
Thanks for doing this video, Katie! I used the process on a recent baby blanket I sold to someone and it did work. I wouldn't say it made the yarn extremely soft, but for acrylic it was much softer than it started out. Thanks again :)
I wash my acrylics in Dawn, and soak them in Downy.. Works well..
I recently made a baby blanket for my new granddaughter out of Red Heart. I wanted it to last a long time. Gauge wasn't important, so I went up a needle size. It turned out soft and squishy. Since giving it to the new mama, she has washed it multiple times due to it being the baby's favorite blankie. No special washing instructions, just wash it and dry it, and it is holding up great. Infact, it is softer than the expensive wool that I'm using now. Lol. I used to hate Red Heart, but I am re- thinking it after this experience.
I use red heart a lot and I have notices it can vary skein by skein, and I also think its is getting better than it was years ago. You can't beat it for durability
I have used some pretty stiff yarn on quite a few blankets.. i just simply wash my projects in the machine on the handwash cycle and then add fabric softener. I add a genorous amount. I dry in a tumble dryer on a low heat and my projetcts come out supwr soft and floppy.. i use lenor spring awakening fabric softener.
Just steam it. Blocking and shape it with steam makes it soft. Just hovering your steam iron over it move it slowly as not to melt it. Material comes out very nice. I just crocheted a pull over sweater and did this and it’s very nice and soft.
Does this blocking change the pullover sise?
Carmen , No not at all, in fact it puts it into shape.
It's easier if you add the shampoo to the water first than put your project in. Love your channel ❤
Hi I love these videos, learn lots I personally experimented with my acrylics and because acrylic is basically plastic that warmth is the key to softening the yarn. By happy accident I found hanging your projects in the sunshine not only freshens them up, it kills any musty smells and softens quite a bit. No scrubbing, no having to shave the fuzz and when it is time to clean video above is great way to do that!!

Agreed. I have kept projects unwashed in plastic bags and I live in a warm climate and they have gotten somewhat softer this way.
Thank you for the tutorial Katie I will have to try this.
do you have a tutorial on this crocheted baby blanket?
Maybe a baby shampoo that is hypoallergenic would have been best along with baby conditioner.
I was a bit worried. What if baby is allergic to the product I would use
That is a beautiful blanket. Could you share the name of the pattern for it?
I'd love to have that pattern too.
Thanks for this video, I'm going to use this process for my projects.
Oh my gosh thank u for posting I will have to try this I love the pattern too kaite your so brave for washing the blanket I am to a Afraid to put mine in the washer
+Rebecca Lapointe Use a washable yarn and hide your ends well and you should be ok. Fear not! I have 20 year old afghans that have been washed countless times. They just get better and better with each washing :)
Katie Cooks and Crafts I’m also too scared to wash anything especially in the washer! 😖
@@xxlisaxx5992 just do it. Take a chance, and you’ll be happy. Acrylic yarn was made for washing machines. Tried and tested many times. 🇨🇦
Thank you very much for this i am trying it with my current project
beautiful work and thanks for the video I needed the help with how to make it softer and what to wash them on
Pretty Baby blanket, wish you had a tutorial for it. 😕
Is there a video tutorial on your blanket?
A great give away. Love all the items.
Thank you for doing this.
i read that adding some vinegar to the water in the washing machine helps to soften
it's also good for deodorizing smells!
Soaking it first in *white* vinegar for an hour or so is usually the first step. Then rinse well and go from there.
I have never used this method. I make afghans from mostly Caron One Pound. I wash it on Normal cycle with several clean, large bath towels (they have been washed many times so there is no lintie-ness left on the afghan.
I use regular laundry soap.... Tide.... and fabric softener... usually Downey.
Then dry in dryer on low heat with a couple dryer sheets. They come out fluffy and somewhat softer. Fluffy like towels usually come out.
@@sheiladale6200 - Thanks for sharing
@@sheiladale6200 last rinse with vinegar, also gets rid of any leftover soap on garment. 🇨🇦
Thank you. What stitch did you use? I really like it.
As a crocheter and hairstylist I fail to see how this method could work.
Most laundry detergents have very strong sulfates, which would completley negate the supposed affects of the shampoo and conditioner. In other words the detergent would wash out both shampoo and conditioner as detergent is much harsher.
Hair not yarn, benefits from rinsing conditioner out with cooler water as it smooths the cuticle of the hair shaft.
However this technique may work but in reverse order, detergent, shampoo then conditioner but honestly seems like a wadte of products and pretty pointless.
Just wash by hand or machine, with baby detergant or woolite and some yummy fabric softner.
Washing yarn removes the sizing and renders a softer feeling.
Hair stylist also.... I was wondering the same also.
@@gingerbredgirl6215 I've found by accident Woolite works great. I despise hand washing or drying.
I was wondering why she didn't just soak it in fabric softener lol
Why not use fabric softener? =)
good question! lol
Hair conditioners only work to soften natural fibers!
Any risks when doing this on finished crochet projects with polyester stuffing in them?
I just use fabric softener and water for a few min then rinse.
I adjust the size of my hook to give a softer fabric.
OMG as soon as I saw the blanket I thought that’s the exact same pattern I’m doing, and same colour! Wouldn’t it be funny if you use lion brand pound of love? But then you said you did. So I was so surprised we made the exact same blanket, mine is 36x 36 aswell!
Hadiyah Azmi which stitch did you use? I wish there was a video of it so I could try it too
Ty for your help
Do you have a you tube tutorial. That would be for the stick you used on the blanket
I'm just concerned about using anything other than baby shampoo or conditioners being that this will be on a baby wouldn't this cause the baby irritation because it's too harsh?
love the pattern i
+Samantha Shortt Thanks, it worked up so quick and easy www.favecrafts.com/Crochet-Afghans/Shells-and-Double-Crochets-Baby-Afghan
Great tip! Thanks!
Do you block before you do the softening process?
I think this is a link to this pattern. It is a cluster stitch m.ruclips.net/video/a90H8n04wcE/видео.html video not by Katie( sorry) but love the look of this blanket
Hi do you use any kind of conditioner
Thank you!!😁👍
thanks for sharing! great video!
what if you put a shark afghan. in the washer on delicate. cycle, which it has to parts that are stuffed with fiber fill
what if i dnt have a dryer?? will a hairdryer work on low heat??
THank you!! Is this acrylic yarn?? and how would I soften acrylic yarn, wash it, and block it for the first ever time?
Acrylic usually only needs a light blocking or no blocking. If your project needs blocking I would wash and machine dry it first, then you can wet it lightly and shape it with your hands to the correct shape and measurments and let it air dry.
I don’t see how this is effective. It isn’t necessary to do the shampoo and conditioner plus detergent, pretty meaningless as the conditioner is washed out by the detergent. You can just use delicate detergent and gentle cycle. I don’t recommend fabric softener for baby items as they leave heavy residue and tend to cause dermatitis for baby’s delicate skin. It’s pretty harmful even for adults..my dermatologist told me fabric softener is a common allergen and cause a lot of skin irritations to many people.
I use white vinegar instead of fabric softener for the same reasons.
Baby shampoo works well
Anyone just wash with dreft?
OMG,who has this much time.
Waaaaay too much work. Washer in cold water with delicate soap and fabric softener for baby and then dryer on low. Don't know what that soap and conditioner is but not good for baby.
Baby Shampoo would be better than using cheap hotel crap
