met him at six flags/great adventure amusement park, in jackson, nj, many summers ago, in the 90’s, while he was touring with the grateful dead. he was there with his wife and twin sons on a day off from the tour. we were all in line for a roller coaster, and i recognized him, pointed at him, grinned, and he smiled and nodded, letting me know that, yes, i’m who you think i am. i simply said, “i hope you all have a wonderful day”, and he extended the same back to me. very nice moment, very nice memory.
Beautiful, puts the melody in the lower register on the left hand and his right comps. Really fills it out and compensates for the lack of a band. Brilliant musician. Love his Dylan-esque delivery too. Would love to hear a recorded version like this. Then he cuts loose on the solo!
I had the great pleasure to work with Bruce once several years ago. It was nice then, as it is now, to see the smile on his face when he plays this melody. It's amazing to me that after the millions of times he must of played this, that it still brings him and us so much joy. Timeless.
I saw him in Boise around 1988. Amazing of course. In those days, he played the songs mostly like we heard them on the album and we loved him for it. As he matured and branched into jazz, he was more free with the arrangements and tempo of these classics. So cool. Like hearing a completely new song that I still love from the start.
2 things: I love how much conviction he has in this song, especially the lyrics. 2nd: HOW DO YOU JUST GET BETTER AND BETTER AT PLAYING A SONG THAT IS SO GOD DAMN TECHNICAL?!
I’m a head, but god I love this song! What I would give to hear the Dead play this just once...The thought of Jerry’s melodic soloing, bursting into bloom over this tune brings tears to my eyes. The joy that would have created for all who experienced it...mmm...that would have been something else...
I see no changes, wake up in the morning and I ask myself; is life worth living should I blast myself. I'm tired of being poor, even worse I'm bl...uh wait..my stomach hurts so I'm looking for a purse to snatch.

if everyone treated 'stars' that way i bet they would all be so thankful! they are people a lot more like us than we act - nice story.

Thats just the way it is
This song came out when I was a freshman in high school. Beautiful. It reminds me of northern Ohio blanketed with snow in the winter.

See Bruce’s big grin in the opening bars 😊 Still loves this song, and so do we. Thanks.

When I tell you 3:40 really caught me off guard, my goodness. Stellar performance all around.
Man, the audio quality is just awesome..
Yeah, Howard always had the best sound setup on his show.

Great version of a great song, but nothing beats the up tempo version, when he beats the hell out of the piano.
I like the Greendale Community College version best.

Woowwwww...this version should be in a awesome movie.

Bruce wont play it the way you heard it on the record, he will do it better and fresher. Amazing new music and to see live, check him out.
So good. I've not seen or heard this one before.
I get it ...played it from day one over and over ....beautiful masterpiece !!!
This rendition is awesome!
Amazing performance 👍
Granted he recorded the song over 30 years ago, but his voice is wildly different now. Sounds like a completely different person.
Hornsby rules!
Long live the King 👑
From 3:32 wow what an ending ❤️

Legend
O toque do piano é épico.
Bruce looks 30 years old. Great song.
Let's not get crazy...he looks good for his age, but he was in his 50s here.
Not necessarily a HS fan, but he does get some all-time greats on his show!
Wtf Mandela! I was listening to Howard in 2006 I don't know how I missed this
I dig it
Boy can play....
Don't you believe them
Good songwriter.
Standin in line for the welfare dime i see high pitch eric just for fun he says "get a job"
that was a different variation than the original...
>which came first chicken or the egg / 2pac 'changes' or Bruce Hornsby 'way it is'
Greendale
Shout out Van Nuys
What the hell did he do with this song?? It’s still in there but that’s not at all the mood and tempo of the original song.
