Now that is workshop style furniture! Every video I've seen used mortise n tenons, draws in the base, I've even seen folks finishing a workbench for a shop! This is what I need, an inexpensive, safe, highly operable flip top bench!
I bought the plans and built this. Two tweaks I made that made it easier to build and sturdier. 1. I didn’t put the plywood on the flip top until I got the pipe through all the holes. Being able to guide it made it easier. 2. Then I only put the plywood on one side. I flipped it over and put in two more 2x4’s running parallel to the pipe sandwiched between the two plywood pieces. It allowed me to screw my planer and jointer into 2x4’s and plywood instead of just plywood. 3. Once those two pieces of 2x4 are added I then put the last piece of plywood on. Plans were pretty great but those tweaks made it easier.
I too like to build stuff with 2x4s cause their cheap. If you skim the surface of the 2x4s on all 4 sides, planer or table saw, they actually finish up nicely. Like furniture look nice. Next time you build another cart you should spend a few more mins prepping the 2x4s. You’ll be amazed the nice wood grain you get just by removing that surface layer. Thanks for the video.
Very good video. I built this after watching the video. Makes a very solid cart. The only thing I did different was to rip the top 2x4s down to 3” so the sides are even with the top.
Hey all, here’s some advice for anyone looking to do this on the cheap. Visit businesses that sell any type of industrial pipelines. Pipeline is stored using metal banding and made into bundles. To lift these stacked pipeline bundles (with a forklift), they are banded with a 4 or 8ft x 2”x6” boards. Some are even banded with 4x4s. I know this because I work at such a place. And up until 3 months ago, we threw perfectly good lumber in the dumpster. I now have a pretty good section of my garage stocked with FREE 2”x6” lumber. Another great place is a crate making facility. My brother works for one. He loads up people with free lumber from leftover crate jobs. A company is quoted a price for a crate. They are charged for entire sheets of plywood. So, they may use an entire sheet of plywood and 6 inches of another. The customer is billed for 2 sheets regardless. The rest goes in the trash. His company doesn’t care who takes it because they’ve been paid for the cost. It’s sad but not if people like us step in and prevent it from going into a landfill. Best of luck all!!!
This is awesome! The all-plywood builds all over RUclips seem excessive. 2x4s are just so much cheaper and easier to work with. I think the only modification I'll make when I build this is some half lap joints on the frame. Thank you for this video!
Fast forward 3 years later from the posting of this video $30 for plywood sheet sounds wonderful. Now going $60 -$70 a sheet now in my local area at Lowes. 2x4’s still a better bargain.
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Sure beats all the hassle of breaking down sheets of plywood. Would like to make one for my bench top drill press and bench top bandsaw. The combined weight of both is about 130 lbs. based on your experience do you think the style you built would be strong/sturdy enough for that. Thanks.
Just bought the plans following your brilliant video. Thanks. At last a flip cart using 2 x 4s instead of plywood. I want to use it for my jointer and planer, both are very heavy. Do you think this will be strong enough?
I built almost exactly the same thing about a year ago. I had to put some 45deg braces on the bottom because it was a little wobbly. Super sturdy now though.
This the best build - simple yet effective. Thanks for sharing. BTW, have a quick question - I noticed you use only pocket screws and no glue in the joinery. Now that you have it for more than 2 years, how's it holding up? Do you recommend using glue in addition to pocket holes? And in general are there any other tips, changes or improvements you would suggest? I am about to build one and hence asking. Thanks in advance for all you help.
Off topic, I have that same table saw and bought it used off Facebook marketplace. The person I bought it from did not have the out feed support anymore, so I'm making my own out of 3/4" steel tubing and plywood. Any chance you would my willing to measure yours for me and let me know the dimensions of the support piece. I need height, length, width and the angle of the the front bevel. I would greatly appreciate the information if you're willing to do the for me
Thanks for all your videos. They are great ! I think I will build a flip top like yours. Like the simplicity in your locking mechanism in the corners too. but... why do you guys (US) still use phillips crews ?? They went extinct / obsolete many years ago. Torx was developed in 1967....
Robertson screws have been around long before that. Obviously unaware of their superiority, they are commonly referred to as Square Drive. Most pocket hole screws are Square Drive. And don't even get me started on how incredible the new POZI-Drive screws are.
Nice build and good for someone to make for cheap…but $15 for pdf plans after stating it was only $30 or $40 for the materials. 50% for just plans. Man
Very nice. Simple, strong, and inexpensive. After watching all the high dollar flip tables videos, it’s refreshing to see something like this.

I’m going to build that one for sure. After looking at a ton of them on RUclips this one is simple, strong, and inexpensive. Thank you
Purchased the plans - very thorough. Best vid music ever.... Thanks!
Loved the simplicity of this bench, others i have seen were a little bit complicated just me
Perfect. The brilliance is in the simplicity.

Good suggestions, thanks!
This is perfect! Thank you for your generosity and sharing your knowledge sensei.
Glad it was helpful!

Thanks for the video.
I need to build one of these for my planer and spindle sander. Thanks for showing how to do it.
Nice job. Really simple straightforward design. I've watched a ton of mobile flip top cart videos and this seems the most achievable to me. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!

Super great tips!
This is exactly what I had envisioned building. Great step by step video!!
Glad it was helpful!
Cheapest and best I’ve seen. Thank ypu
Just bought the plan for this today...thanks so much Chris!
Awesome!! I hope you get as much use out of your stand as I have mine. It was a real improvement in my shop.
Back up. How did you make that table saw slide?

A 3/4" 4X8' sheet of plywood today at my local Home Depot is $94.
Fast forward 3 years later from the posting of this video $30 for plywood sheet sounds wonderful. Now going $60 -$70 a sheet now in my local area at Lowes. 2x4’s still a better bargain.
I almost cried when he said 2x4's were like 3 bucks, i miss the old prices
Down to $6 for me now. $12 last month!
down to $3.25 in So.Cal.

Very nice indeed. Do you have a video making one for a planer?
It's the same exact stand. You just have to change the dimensions for the planer you plan on using.
Nice simple build but don't you find the oscillating sander to be too high?
No.
Some good ideas

I want to use it for my jointer and planer, both are very heavy. Do you think this will be strong enough?
Obviously, since I know nothing about your jointer or planer, I can’t say. Feel free to beef it up if you need to.
Really like the nice simple design. Curious as to whether the lag bolts have held up bearing the weight of the spindle sander while it’s upside down
They've held up great. They only hold the table in position. It's the center tube that supports the weight.
The eye bolts should keep the sides from splaying out. That was my original concern.
I built almost exactly the same thing about a year ago. I had to put some 45deg braces on the bottom because it was a little wobbly. Super sturdy now though.
What is on the non-tool side? SOme form of dust extraction box?
Nice!!! Great job thank you.
You bet!
Nice build. Thanks

You can add glue, but it is not necessary.
Pocket hole screws are great! Easy and strong joints.

Nicely done
Excellent instructions.

By slight change , this drop down table can also be use for THERMOFORMING of acrylic , plexiglass sheet as well,
Thankful👍
Thanks for all your videos. They are great !

but... why do you guys (US) still use phillips crews ??
They went extinct / obsolete many years ago. Torx was developed in 1967....
The US made trillions and trillions of phillips screws in 1966 so we have to wait until they are all gone.
Robertson screws have been around long before that. Obviously unaware of their superiority, they are commonly referred to as Square Drive. Most pocket hole screws are Square Drive. And don't even get me started on how incredible the new POZI-Drive screws are.
And now, plywood is up to $70 in the northeast.
Hopefully the prices will come down after everyone gets vaccinated and the pandemic is declared over.
What kind of assembly table do you have?
I have a 96” wide x 24” deep industrial table along with a custom built guitar support stand for assembly and setup.
2X4 were $7.99 last I saw in Chicago HD.
Just over $8 here in Denver. Down from over $10 a couple of weeks ago.
I wish it could be this cheep to build, where I’m from a piece of 2x4 8 foot long costs 8$
Today's prices = $6.50 for each 2 x 4 and $30 per sheet for OSB. I might start trash picking.
Now the plywood 3/4" 4'x8' goes for over $70!
"2x4s are cheap" *laughs in 2021 prices*
The prices where I live are almost back to pre-pandemic levels.
Double all the prices though
Like the price of milk, bread, eggs, gas, rent, mortgages, etc.
I think I would have cut those knobs using the CNC... :)
Not everyone has a CNC.
@@barryroberts6470 True, but Chris does...that was really the focus of my original comment.

Oh come on… it helps to support my RUclips channel.
And don’t forget 10 dollars for top secret plans.
A small price to pay for helping to support this channel!
