      Agree, except for the 'bikes' part ... Do wish they'd ride the bikes we can afford a little more often, but then - as all being retired professional racers - they do deserve to ride the best. What I think I need is the "Affordable GCN Channel." ;-)

    We have a roadrace in Norway which starts in Trondheim and ends in Oslo, called Styrkeprøven (translates neatly to "the strenght test"). Its approx 540 km long. I did it as a 15-year old in 2006 together with my dad and granddad, with an avg pace of 27 km/h, or 20hrs 17mins. And I can totally relate to the feelings you describe when you are having stops and breaks. You just dread getting back on the bike, but you know you have to. We only had short stops every 80-100k to stack up food and go to the toilets. Night racing is crazy, especially 12-14 hours in. Man that was such a mental experience. Would of loved to know my stats in terms of avg watts and calories.

    Bodybuilding fitness channels will do 10,000 calorie challenges and they’ve got to be way off because cycling is a constant aerobic effort and those guys will just do random exercises all day with rest between. • @ltu42
      @ltu42 5 лет назад +17

      A power meter only tells that they've put out 8.4 MJ of work (199W * (11*3600 + 44*60)s). The amount of calories burnt is still a vague estimate. And, BTW, Strava, Garmin devices etc. use the rule of thumb that 1kcal burnt = 1kJ mechancal work put out. So Si and James might be 16% below their target.

      There's no way anybody is burning 10k calories lifting weights in a single day. Even if you're lifting heavy, it just isn't happening. The physics and math don't back it up. Assuming perfect efficiency, lifting 100 lbs a distance of 2 feet burns 0.06 nutritional calories (kcal). Even if you account for heat loss and the mechanical inefficiencies of the human body, 10k calories in a day is beyond belief.

    • @dazzershell
      @dazzershell 5 лет назад +4

      Once I wanted to beat my 1000 squat challenge, i have done it in 1 hour with approximate power of 213W (body weight without legs was measured, sitting on libra, and power then can be calculated wery easy). But when I was trying to maintain that power on climb with mountainbike, i was out of fuel wery quickly. We have 800m long 7% climb, it is 56 meter height, moving body and bike mass uphill with 10km/h is near 200W. I cant take into account all factors, I have no powermeter and want to ask, is that measure method taking place, have you calibrated your powermeter, or checked it by such weird experiments? How big is the difference?

    • @horiabass
      @horiabass 5 лет назад +5

      @@dazzershell the human body is more efficient at running or when doing multi joint exercises where it can recruit more muscle groups, so if you exert 200 watts while running or squatting, it's likely you'll average less while riding, I'd guesstimate 150 watts at the same heart rate, which are further reduced by things like drive-train and tire friction. There's not much science and tests on this, just some independent experiments but I agree it's an interesting topic.

    • @piaseq
      @piaseq 4 года назад +7

      200W is a very low figure for a trained cyclist. For example my HR range is 38-173bpm. When I'm pushing out 200W my HR (currently) holds at about 110-112bpm. It goes up to 154bpm when I hit my FTP of about 330W. And I am not a pro. Just amateur rider in his late 30's. Telling you this just to give you the big picture. Lets be clear that I totally respect your result.

      It doesn't matter. correct me if I am wrong. Your body can only absorb 120-240 kcals/h as some say (during the exercise, ref missing). Glycogen stores is say 2000. Well you better have some fat reserves. Not to much some 600g if fat. You want to be fat met adopted burning that 1g/minute. Then you're fine to do it in 10h. But with no reserve so you can collapse and get in life treating state.

      I hate to break it to you but you probably didn't. They are putting out pretty serious POWER. It's not about the distance or time alone. You were 16.6 km/hr. Let's be generous and say you were stopped 20% of the time, then it's 19.7 km/hr, but only 17.5 hrs of riding. The reason that's still a generous estimate is 20% higher speed is 20% less time, but the power increase is much more than 20%. Ok, so 19.7km/hr is, well, let's assume you're not light, maybe 90kg, then that's about 73 watts!! (which is puny, but not bat AT ALL for that kind of hours). So that's 1,277 watt hours. As they showed at the beginning, 10,000 calories is 2,324 watt hours. Assuming there were some hills and wind maybe you did a bit more, but probably still not there. Not meaning to break your bubble, just to say that what they did is REALLY hard.

      @@nickhumphrey4833 I'm using the numbers you gave, and my estimates are pretty solid given the assumptions stated, but indeed there were some assumptions. I was reasonably generous with those but yeah, maybe you took 6 hours of breaks (which would increase not decrease calories for the ride) and did hard intervals uphill and against the wind on knobby mtb tires in a super upright position. Either way, it was an amazing ride.

    Hi guys, endurance rider here. Two bits : First I think Katherine probably burned over 10K calories riding the DK last year? And she did it with a smile. #GravelRiderGrit
    Second, I've done it before. "Ride Across Wisconsin" in 2016. According to my numbers I rode for about 14.75 hours (straight thru, with stops), and burned 11,450+ calories riding literally across the state of Wisconsin. I wasn't the first finisher, not by a long shot, but I can tell you it can be done.
    And if you want more stats : 7,302 ft elevation, 178 miles (286.65 km), Avg speed 14.1 mph (22.7 kph) and riding a HEAVY aluminum cyclocross bike with 700x32's. And I'm already signed up for THIS year's Ride Across Wisconsin (225 miles / 362 km going from the Mississippi to Lake Michigan, 1 day) Gonna be an interesting ride!

We have a series of 23 - 200 milers here in California ranging from easy ones with 10,000 ft to the hard ones with 20,000 feet. FYI - I put on unsupported 200 milers with 20,000 - 25,000 feet of climbing. This one will be held in June 239 miles just shy of 27,000 ft - every event organizer has to have something to market with "The greatest..." "The hardest..."
