Last year August, I've ridden Japan coast to coast (from Aichi-ken to Fukui) in around 15 hours on a Cannondale Slate. Carrying a luke with a tent and some clothes. In the second stop halfway through, my legs started to ache. But the real pain was heading back home 24 hours later after barely sleeping. Butt, sole of the feet and hands were hurting so bad that I had to take a train. It was hardcore, and I have never felt so sore. But would do it again! The scenery and pleasure to ride on roads that feels like a wide bike path, just for you, pays really well!
Great effort guys! I've come to know all too well the "drunk" feeling ollie described. Ive done many days in the saddle just like this one, but always solo. Must be nice to have friends crazy enough to ride with you like this. Much love from Washington state!

Love those longer videos where the presenters push their limits. Like the everesting of Ollie. Inspires me everytime to give my best every time I go on the bike
Brilliant! There's very few GCN rider challenges where I've watched and gone "I could do that!" or "I've done that!" but this is one. I heartily recommend the Le Mans 24H Velo race on the Bugatti circuit of Le Mans. I managed 682km solo (drafting of others is allowed), and Strava says I burned 17,000 kcals! James is spot on about the cloudy brain feeling (tip: power naps), and watching Si contemplating how much more he can eat and drink brought flashbacks too. Cracking stuff. Fancy a challenge in 2020, GCN?
Great video all round. Epic challenge, great cinematography, great presenting. Been around that area but without a bike, fantastic scenery and lovely roads.

OMG i nearly died they are not race fuel
I hate to break it to you but you probably didn't. They are putting out pretty serious POWER. It's not about the distance or time alone. You were 16.6 km/hr. Let's be generous and say you were stopped 20% of the time, then it's 19.7 km/hr, but only 17.5 hrs of riding. The reason that's still a generous estimate is 20% higher speed is 20% less time, but the power increase is much more than 20%. Ok, so 19.7km/hr is, well, let's assume you're not light, maybe 90kg, then that's about 73 watts!! (which is puny, but not bat AT ALL for that kind of hours). So that's 1,277 watt hours. As they showed at the beginning, 10,000 calories is 2,324 watt hours. Assuming there were some hills and wind maybe you did a bit more, but probably still not there. Not meaning to break your bubble, just to say that what they did is REALLY hard.

@@nickhumphrey4833 I'm using the numbers you gave, and my estimates are pretty solid given the assumptions stated, but indeed there were some assumptions. I wasn't the first finisher, not by a long shot, but I can tell you it can be done. And if you want more stats : 7,302 ft elevation, 178 miles (286.65 km), Avg speed 14.1 mph (22.7 kph) and riding a HEAVY aluminum cyclocross bike with 700x32's. And I'm already signed up for THIS year's Ride Across Wisconsin (225 miles / 362 km going from the Mississippi to Lake Michigan, 1 day) Gonna be an interesting ride!

People that do the non-stop endurance races, such as TCR, sya it's an eating race, as they struggle to get in the energy needed to sustain themselves cycling almost non-stop for a week.
Surely they probably DID eat 10,000 calories during this day because how else did they have the energy to keep riding? If they didn't eat 10,000 calories then their bodies would have to start burning fat. The reason they at lots of food in this video was to get the calories that they were burning on the bike, obviously!

This GCN network I recently stumbled upon is my favorite RUclips thing right now. Great stuff all around.
Aw thanks Ernesto! Glad to have you here.
Next: GCN does PBP (the Paris-Brest-Paris Randonneur: 1,200Km in 90 hours).
would LOVE to see this.
Just came here to say - they've got to try randonnuering!
Agreed, needs to happen. This year is your chance GCN!
Agreed! Nice brevet guys!
I'd love to see GCN does an audax
Great effort guys! I've come to know all too well the "drunk" feeling ollie described. Ive done many days in the saddle just like this one, but always solo. Must be nice to have friends crazy enough to ride with you like this. Much love from Washington state!
The amount of time, mental challenges and hard work (and flashcards xD) that was given for this video is impressive and inspiring. I hope this gets recognition it deserves. Well done guys! Legends! 💪🔥🚴♂️
Never commented before. Amazing video guys, best yet. Great challenge, and very engaging to watch, fab video editing too, and amazing montage!
Thanks for taking the time and your support!
Yes. If you are James Hayden on the TCR! On day one he burnt 13500
God damn the quality over here has gone through the roof! Incredible stories!
Sheer lunacy and keep these videos coming! Some say that with every watt expended on a bicycle, Jeremy Clarkson's piles get more inflamed.
If that were true I’d be on my bike now and stay on it till I collapsed.
relate your mind with good people and good things cuz i have to google it ;)
I have an answer for one of James' questions. THIS is my favorite GCN video of all-time!! Awesome job to the guys for the ride; and the production crew for the amazing finished product!
This is the kind of quality mad content we like to see!
how you film these videos really amaze me! I have to see a behind the scenes video!
Well done!
Man, job as a GCN presenter is getting Super tough.. everesting, unofficial climb world record, sufferfest, 10K calories and more. What next? Cycling on magma, breaking record on ice?
Anyways it’s interesting to see Hank chose a madone for such Long ride. The isospeed must be very good
I've done 9 hours and 6500 calories. This is another level. Top notch boys.
3 hour 18 minutes and 2956 calories, is what you get with Fatbike in woods.
@@mr.wizeguy8995 fatbike is a type of bike??
@@theawantikamishra Yes it is best bike for wood trails.
Love those longer videos where the presenters push their limits. Like the everesting of Ollie. Inspires me everytime to give my best every time I go on the bike
Standing ovation!!! My back side is a little sore just from watching.
13:13 Si, your hair looks amazing. Thumbs up for your effort guys, I've done longer ride with friends but at only 118 average watts so your 197 watts sounds like a proper torture.
MAKE MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS!.!.!
One of the best you guys have ever done from all aspects. It is honestly mind boggling how you guys completed that ride.
You should do a science laden video about recovery after something epic like this
Lay down, foam roll, go for a walk, ice anything that hurts. Done!
GCN, this was The best video you guys have mad. I've watched it now 3 time and keep getting goosebumps. I dont know wht else to say than great work! You guys keep killing it with them little documentaries!
Great video! This Will be my GCN favourite!
Have you ever ridden far enough to burn 10,000 calories? 😱
Nope never😱😂
Yup! Vätternrundan in Sweden. 300 k. If you stay out of the groups you easily burn 10 kcal before the finish line. You should do it as a challenge next year!
Zürich -Zermatt 👌
No, but I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they’re not much bigger than two meters.
On my longest ride I burnt 8400 calories, so no.
Doesn't want to go too far from base, then announces a route in Spain. I didn't see that coming.
Calum Spencer doing it in Britain, in January, 80% of energy is for generating heat - they would have been over with the ride in 3 hours! Ask Mark Beaumont.
@@sisaktamas whats a jacket , also you wont feel the cold
I just love stupid plans. Way to go! ( also awesome helmet hair :-))
Im pretty sure ive done this I rode from burnley to blackpool and then to whitby about 215 miles in a day 21 hours in preparation for john o'groats lands end. longest day ive done 230 miles in scotland. biggest mistake I ever made when I did the first trip- was I packed a load of sausage rolls into my framebag, had them in york.
@@bigring6424 your speculating what I did not do. Im speculating what I did do "im pretty sure Ive probably done this." I don't know it absolutely. I know im a pretty good rider im not going tell what my abilities are because you don't know me your speculating about that. Do you actually know better than me? no you don't know for sure. I might be completely crap and produce 1 watt an hour an be a complete weakling. Im telling you ive probably done that if you wanna believe me thats up to you
@@nickhumphrey4833 I'm using the numbers you gave, and my estimates are pretty solid given the assumptions stated, but indeed there were some assumptions. I was reasonably generous with those but yeah, maybe you took 6 hours of breaks (which would increase not decrease calories for the ride) and did hard intervals uphill and against the wind on knobby mtb tires in a super upright position. Either way, it was an amazing ride.
Spent the day watching a load of GCN videos and had to go and relax cause this even made my legs feels sore watching it! Epic achievement and would love to see more of these kinds of videos. Keep up the good work
Nothing beats that feeling when you ride all day and come home all tired and sore but still somehow you feel like million bucks. I came close to this last year when i rode 300k. 8999 calories burned (according to wahoo anyway). Have longer ride(s) planned for this year so maybe that 10k gets beaten aswell :D
You should have ridden another few metres to clock up OVER 9000!!
@@peter_smyth Haha, should've!
Wow!! Do you own a power meter ? If yes, what average power ?
@@pascalos78 I don't, sadly. Kinda wish i had, but can't afford one.
That was mental. Amazing effort guys, and another great effort from the production team too
great video! looking forward to see the "how to cope with the worst muscle soreness of your live" video :-P
15:08 i thought i was watching Abroad In Japan for a second then lmao
How to tag @abroad in Japan here?
He did cycle 2000km across Japan on a terrible bike, so crossover potential maybe? :)
Who burnt more calories? You or Olie on the Everesting?
Brendon Noble exactly wha I was thinking
My question also. Inquiring minds want to know......
Or Katherine on the Dirty Kanza.
According to Ollie's Strava page he burned 10,200 Calories with 197W weighted average for 15 hours 17 minutes. Hank and Si could've saved themselves a lot of pain with a little research.
@@d.gwebster1109 whoever weighs more burned more assuming all else is equal.
Can we look forward to a GCN presenter challenge next summer: Vätternrundan in Sweden? 300 km.
Hi guys, endurance rider here. Two bits : First I think Katherine probably burned over 10K calories riding the DK last year? And she did it with a smile. #GravelRiderGrit
Second, I've done it before. "Ride Across Wisconsin" in 2016. According to my numbers I rode for about 14.75 hours (straight thru, with stops), and burned 11,450+ calories riding literally across the state of Wisconsin.
Sounds awesome, good luck man!
If you ever want to come out to the west coast, we have some beautiful rides in the Sierra ranging from 100 to 200 miles with 10,000 feet to 20,000+ feet of climbing. Gorgeous mountain views though. I doubt anyone will ever catch me riding much over 100 miles in a day, though.
It’s quite routine for me to do a 100 miler with 10,000 ft of climbing or more. We have a series of 23 - 200 milers here in California ranging from easy ones with 10,000 ft to the hard ones with 20,000 feet. FYI - I put on unsupported 200 milers with 20,000 - 25,000 feet of climbing. This one will be held in June 239 miles just shy of 27,000 ft - every event organizer has to have something to market with "The greatest..." "The hardest..." "The most..." and so on :-) ridewithgps.com/routes/29272217
Dat Otter - come to California for my Double Century
Trans Am Bicycle Race, try riding back to back days for more than 2 weeks, the ultimate challenge.
I did the Rapha Manchester to London in 2017 and this was my hardest ever day on the bike, I just had a peak at my Garmin details from this ride and I apparently burnt 8600 calories, it took me the best bit of a week to recover, so you guys have my utmost respect for your efforts here.
As mental as it is....I kinda want to try it myself...even if I just manage half. lol
Awesome work, guys, inspiring!!!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My personal record was a little over 4,600Cal in a day. Just checked. Dang....might try to aim for an 8000 then come the warmer weather. lol
I've done it more then once on particularly long off road rides. It is an interesting experience seeing how far you push yourself.
This is my go to video whenever I need any motivation or some solid entertainment video. I hope that one day I'll be able to burn 10000 calories in a single ride. One of the best video on RUclips, like ever.

I wouldn't say its normal, but I still respect it.
I don't know if you've got new editors, new filmers, or what - but this and James's "meet the presenter" video is really another level of production for GCN. Brilliant stuff.
Next video: Simon and James does the 10000 calories in a day eating challenge
People that do the non-stop endurance races, such as TCR, sya it's an eating race, as they struggle to get in the energy needed to sustain themselves cycling almost non-stop for a week.
@@jameslowsley-williams4243 check out Beard meats food on RUclips for 10000 calorie eating challenges.
Surely they probably DID eat 10,000 calories during this day because how else did they have the energy to keep riding? If they didn't eat 10,000 calories then their bodies would have to start burning fat. The reason they at lots of food in this video was to get the calories that they were burning on the bike, obviously!
Great vid guys. Content was spot on and totally awe inspiring. Production, best one you've done yet. Really well done guys . I dof my helmet to you. 👍

GCN production quality is on another level recently.
During my longest ultra endurance cycling event I was in I burned 26,000 calories in the span of two consecutive day of cycling as a vegan. Which equates to 13,000 calories burned The first day and another 13,000 calories burned on the second day.
and?
Had to mention being a vegan for no reason at all.

Great content all around!
Kudos. I just completed a 230 mile ride in 17.5 hours in the saddle and the Garmin calculate just shy of 9kcal. I found eating anything, after a while, very difficult to do. At points I was struggling to do 80w, but I took a page from Mark Beaumont’s book and reminded myself that when it’s good, it will get worse and when it’s bad, it will get better. Love watching other people torture themselves like I do!
