For all these reasons, food insecurity in Africa is back in the news. In early January 2023, the United Nations warned of the rise in severe food insecurity in the Sahel. In 2024, the situation is no better. Fighting between rival groups in some parts of the continent is causing mass displacement of populations. Apart from the lack of financial resources, the production deficit is highlighted as a root cause of food insecurity on a continent whose population could almost double by 2050.
With all the potential that Africa has with 60% of uncultivated arable land, with the youngest population in the world and significant water resources, why has the continent not yet achieved food self-sufficiency?
And what is the African Union doing to sustainably resolve the issue of food insecurity?
This is the question put to Mrs. Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko, Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union Commission. Interview conducted within the framework of the first edition of the PanAfrican Food Debate held in Algiers.
