The whole point of this scene is it doesnt matter. Events happen and there are variables in the situation, you can play the blame game all day and go back as far as you want but it'll always be somebody elses fault and the witch isnt playing that game because she's over it. She realizes she's the only one who knows what has to happen and the others won't let it happen without a fight, so she gives up.
I love the way this is constructed. The baker starts it, in an outburst of emotion he is just looking for somewhere to put his guilt, and attacks Jack. Jack hits back, and the baker is so desperate to place the blame but not recieve it that he spins around and targets the witch. Red and whatshername appear to just be trying to mathematically figure it out, no stake in it, while Jack and the Baker go back and forth. At which point everyone gets a bit confused and Red seems a bit too eager to find fault, then the only somewhat indifferent person (sorry forgot her name) gets targeted, so now even the most passive is on the defence, and it starts to get everyone agitated as theres nowhere relaxed to go, until they bite off more than they can chew, so caught up in their ping-ponging frustration that they target the witch, who doesnt react, not in the way they're needing to keep from dealing with it. She just stands her ground, and they're stuck. She points fingers, but not in a cause and effect way where they're free to keep moving the goal posts, she assertively points out the behaviours they cant deny, acknowledging theyre all guilty no matter who they look to. ""Doesn't matter now." I've been studying emotional maturity and this is a good demonstration of a grounded person calling out impulsive children.
she have the tendency to over act when it come to musicals, i would have love her in the theatre production first just to get the feel before translating it to film, a lot of people go see theatre and say they overact or too loud or too much but compare Meryl and Bernadette there's definitely a difference between just yelling/acting big and having nuances in acting big which is necessary if youre performing in a big theatre that require you to project your voice, at the end of the day meryl is an actor and not a musical theatre person, different skill sets that need different training other axamples include but not limted to: dear even hansen, les mis, rent, phantom of the opera,...
I think this song plays off of witch/which a lot. She's pushing them to decide /which/ course of action to take rather than messing around with indecisive blame games. Similar to the woods/woulds thing going on in "Moments in the Woods."

I know people keep saying that you can’t really compare movies and live musicals, but in my opinion, I guess I just prefer live musicals! Especially Bernadette Peters’ version! The amount of talent you need to have for a musical is INSANE, especially on the level of Bernadette Peters. You have to do this live, which means you have to be able to perform your part on the spot almost perfectly, along with the acting and stage directions. I can’t stress enough how difficult live performances are! Considering that there’s no autotune, no special effects aside from the fog at the end, and no redoing mistakes, Peters’ performance is really impressive compared to Streep’s. And because the actors are only allowed “one take” in a musical, the energy of the room is electrifying. They all only have one chance to show this particular audience this show tonight. And Peters’ stage presence is so impressive! The way she just takes over and demands the audience’s attention makes me have chills! She’s able to project her voice so powerfully and she can control it extremely well. I guess as a musician, I find Peters to be jaw-dropping more than Streep, since musicals are about communicating a story through the music after all. Anyways, idk who would read this, but there’s my praise for Peters LOL
I think I like both equally. But you can tell that Peters has more breath strength. She's needing to be quite active while singing! So, while she may not be quite as powerful, I think she has more power all together. It would be interesting to hear Barbra Streisand do this!
Over all its all their fault Little Red- dared Jack to go to the giant and steal Bakers Wife- gave the bean to Cinderella Baker - sold the beans to Jack Jack - stole and kill the giant Cinderella- threw the bean Witch- raised the beans Bakers Father- stole the beans Witch's Mother- cursed her own daughter because of losimg the beans
yes everyone was part of the chain, but at the end of the day Jack was the only one who actually knew what he was doing. he knew he was stealing, he knew there were giants, he knew the giant would be angry. the others had no idea what the extent of their actions were, but he did
God I love this song, love this performance. Love the commenters absolutely missing the entire point by trying to figure out whose fault it really was. Fantastic
Me too! Her curls are so defined and voluminous! Obviously it’s a very 80s look, but that’s also just Bernadettes natural hair. I’m honestly jealous lol my hair is so straight and fine.
I think their biggest hang up is that Jack is a child. When ever a minor commits a crime unless truly heinous (i.e. rape or murder) they are tried differently. It's hard for people to stomach sending a child to their death.
and the main reason the Witch can stomach sending this child to his death is her own child has just been killed ... pretty much because of Jack's actions
that was stilen from them taken without consent raped from her this song explained why she was antagonist but not the true villien the villian was the blame all of them
High key; Jack could’ve just cut the stalk and never return, at the very least after the first theft. It was his repeated pillages that manifested the ending with the giant. It is ALL Jack’s fault; and he’s not even a child, he’s like 15 and the default status of minor shouldn’t belittle his crimes OF MURDER. He knew what he was doing, coming back repeatedly to steal, and he knew what he was doing when he got caught. Just because he’s not ‘of age’, which means nothing in this world shouldn’t excuse the fact that Jack’s just an idiot. This point is repeated and solidified; he is just not a smart person; not because of age or experience, he’s just like that and people don’t change that drastically to dismiss it.
@@evelynblackthorn5737 I mean, the whole point of the song (and maybe of the entire musical) is that it's not just one person's fault. It's all a matter of point of view and EVERYONE has their fair share of guilt. That's how life works. Also, just because Jack is played by an adult/teen doesn't mean his character was 15, his age is never specified but it is implied he is a kid. I've always assumed he was like 9 years old. And anyway, both Jack and his mother were very poor, like literally starving kind of poor. The first time he stole from the giant it was to get milky white back. The second time too, but also so that he and his mother could have something to eat. And the third time was because little red dared him to, so his motivations were related to survival and get his best friend back. If anything, we should blame the system that forced Jack and his mother into poverty, cause if the kingdom at least guaranteed they could all eat, Jack wouldn't even need to go up the beanstalk in the first time. Also don't forget that the giant wanted to eat Jack before he even stole anything.
I got callbacks for the baker's wife and the witch on monday and I'm so nervous. I'm confident in singing Last Midnight (it was my first audition piece ever so I've been practicing that one for some time) but I never thought they would want to see me as the wife.
Wow, I saw this last night with Patina Miller as the witch and she as well as the rest of the cast moved me into so many emotions. She did an excellent job with this number.
I swear this song and role are how I fell in love with Bernadette Peters. Just got to see her live a few months ago...4th row and she still sounds amazing!!
the point of the song: It doesn't matter who is to blame because blaming other people doesn't solve the problem. this comment section: Ok but we all agree that it's this person's fault right?
This is and probably always will be my favorite song from this play. It's just so relatable! Like, why are people so stupid and petty and irrational? All of these people are just trying to find someone to blame for the problem and nobody is offering any solutions. The witch offers a solution! It may not be pretty or nice, It might not be the best solution, but at least she's trying. Everyone else is just complaining and pointing fingers and not being helpful at all. The witch is just tired and frustrated. Her final curse is leaving the people alone to solve their own problems because she's done with their pettiness. She doesn't even care if she gets cursed to be ugly because she lost the beans again. She just wants away from these irrational people. And who can blame her really?
This song is probably one of my favorites from this musical There's just something about it that makes it one of my favorite songs from this musical also listening to it through the perspective of the witch gives the song a whole new meaning and overall it adds to her character and story arch
Is it just me or does anyone else feel like this fictional song from a fairytale musical is inching increasingly closer to being a factual account of life as we know it, especially over the past 4-6 years? Such a gem from the sage that was Sondheim.
this hits so hard emotionally but also it's so fucking hilarious that the witch is like oh my god. you people are so fucking stupid. bye. and then just leaves
I want to try this song, I think it represents my voice well... all but that last note. If I screech I will sound like a dying hyena. I might do No One Else though from the Great Comet, but I am an alto... I mean I can hit all of the notes, but I'm just not sure if I should do that for an audition. Can someone give me advice? Can altos sing soprano songs for auditions?
transpose it if you can. it's much more important for them to hear your voice at its full potential than trying to squeeze out a high not that's just out of your range. best of luck!
I remember going to see this play off Broadway in the late 80s/early 90s. Bernadette was in the cast, but that day, her understudy must have stepped in. Sick? Who knows. Would have been great to see her. But the other cast, including Dean Butler, just did such an amazing job. The understudy, as well.
Is it? Because it was his wife’s constant nagging for greens that made him feel desperate enough to steal from the witch. Or is it the witch’s fault for leaving those magic beans out in the open where anyone could mistake them for regular produce? Or is it the witch’s mother’s fault for growing the beans yet cursing her daughter to never lose them? I think that’s the point of this song. There’s not always an easy answer for who is to blame. There’s not always one singular person who is at fault. Chasing blame around just means you’re not fixing the real problem.
@@LunatheMoonDragon Nah, it's the baker's dad fault. People ask for a lot of things when they get pregnant, but you don't see their partners robbing people because of their cravings. You're right though, it's more important to fix a problem than to figure out who to place the blame on - especially since in this case, the person who is most to blame is dead.
@@LunatheMoonDragon No, I'd surmise it is the baker's dad's fault. So his wife's nagging him for greens, but it was his actual, active choice to go ahead and steal from someone else. It's a choice to do something bad that will likely have repercussions or consequences. And he chose to do it. He could have chosen not to steal from the witch, or any person if she wasn't one, and avoid an entire mess. Instead, he was somehow desperate enough to do it? Maybe he just wasn't a smart person. In any case, I understand the point of the musical and this song in particular, but there is still a blame because people choose to do stuff.
i don’t get why people can’t understand why they couldn’t give jack to the giant. i mean, haven’t u heard of moral dilemmas? if they’d given jack to the giant, they would’ve been purposely killing a child to supposedly save the kingdom (no way to know if the giant would keep their part) and no one wants the death of a kid in their conscience
also to all of you blaming jack on the comments try to listen to the lyrics, all of them had the blame somehow (don’t forget: two of them are kids) and even then it doesn’t matter anymore cause it wouldn’t help to solve the problem

""Doesn't matter now."
I've been studying emotional maturity and this is a good demonstration of a grounded person calling out impulsive children.
Cinderella, how do you not know who Cinderella is??
@@juicebox7372 I have no idea. I definitely know it's Cinderella... 😆
@B-MC What a wild year it was I guess 🤷🏾♀️
Meryl Streep is an incredible actress, she did great in the movie, but I'll forever wish it was Bernadette Peters instead. I love her so much.
Me too.
she have the tendency to over act when it come to musicals, i would have love her in the theatre production first just to get the feel before translating it to film, a lot of people go see theatre and say they overact or too loud or too much but compare Meryl and Bernadette there's definitely a difference between just yelling/acting big and having nuances in acting big which is necessary if youre performing in a big theatre that require you to project your voice, at the end of the day meryl is an actor and not a musical theatre person, different skill sets that need different training other axamples include but not limted to: dear even hansen, les mis, rent, phantom of the opera,...
I need to start quoting "I'm not good, I'm not bad, I'm just right. I'm the witch" more. It's stuck in my brain all these years.
Oof. It's been stuck in your head wrong. It's actually "I'm not good I'm not nice I'm just right."
I think this song plays off of witch/which a lot. She's pushing them to decide /which/ course of action to take rather than messing around with indecisive blame games. Similar to the woods/woulds thing going on in "Moments in the Woods."
THIS
It's the last midnight
It's the last wish
It's the last midnight
Soon it will be boom squish!
Told a little lie, stole a little gold, broke a little vow
Did you?
Had to get your Prince, had to get your cow
Have to get your wish, doesn't matter how
Anyway, it doesn't matter now
It's the last midnight
It's the boom splat!
Nothing but a vast midnight
Everybody smashed flat!
Nothing we can do?
Not exactly true
We can always give her the boy
No?
No, of course, what really matters is the blame
Somebody to blame
Fine, if that's the thing you enjoy, placing the blame
If that's the aim, give me the blame
Just give me the boy
[CINDERELLA, JACK, LRRH, BAKER, spoken]
No!
[WITCH]
No?
You're so nice
You're not good, you're not bad
You're just nice
I'm not good, I'm not nice
I'm just right
I'm the witch
You're the world
I'm the hitch, I'm what no one believes
I'm the witch
You're all liars and thieves
Like his father!
Like his son will be too!
Oh, why bother?
You'll just do what you do!
It's the last midnight
So goodbye, all
Coming at you fast, midnight
Soon you'll see the sky fall!
Here, you want a bean?
Have another bean
Beans were made for making you rich!
Plant them and they soar
Here, you want some more?
Listen to the roar
Giants by the score
Oh well, you can blame another witch
It's the last midnight
It's the last verse
Now, before it's past midnight
I'm leaving you my last curse:
I'm leaving you alone
You can tend the garden, it's yours
Separate and alone
Everybody down on all fours
All right, Mother, when?
Lost the beans again!
Punish me the way you did then!
Give me claws and a hunch
Just away from this bunch
And the gloom
And the doom
And the boom
Crunch!
Thanks
It would be interesting to hear Barbra Streisand do this!
how is no one talking about the sheer power and genius of Bernadette Peters...
One of the best messages ever. It may feel better to identify *who* is the 'witch,' but it does not solve the problem.
1:55 Talk about PERFECT DICTION
And I really good line
The witch basically giving up on humanity. beautiful theatrical work. 👏👏👏
Over all its all their fault
Little Red- dared Jack to go to the giant and steal
Bakers Wife- gave the bean to Cinderella
Baker - sold the beans to Jack
Jack - stole and kill the giant
Cinderella- threw the bean
Witch- raised the beans
Bakers Father- stole the beans
Witch's Mother- cursed her own daughter because of losimg the beans
XxFrancis GamingxX well the Witch did have a right to raise the beans in *her own garden*
yes everyone was part of the chain, but at the end of the day Jack was the only one who actually knew what he was doing. he knew he was stealing, he knew there were giants, he knew the giant would be angry. the others had no idea what the extent of their actions were, but he did
@@cheerfullymorbid3286 also the baker's father was also stealing so the moral of the story is: don't steal
Baker’s Mother- pressured her husband for green so forcefully that he felt like he had no choice but to steal
@@Gamergirl-.- Yes but she could have asked for the beans back instead of putting a curse on their house though...
God I love this song, love this performance. Love the commenters absolutely missing the entire point by trying to figure out whose fault it really was. Fantastic
She is so iconic. No one can do this song like her.
I love her hair
So 80s
whos?
@@corasmith6420 i think he/she/they meant the witch, idk.
Me too! Her curls are so defined and voluminous! Obviously it’s a very 80s look, but that’s also just Bernadettes natural hair. I’m honestly jealous lol my hair is so straight and fine.
They should’ve just given jack up point blank period how do you blame someone for growing something in THEIR GARDEN.
I want to see the movie version of this song with that scream she emits here, that would be amazing.
Anifan13- there actually is a movie version
Yes I know. But I want to hear the movie version with the scream that this witch does. It sounds better, to my ears.
Anifan13 idk i think meryl streep’s version was better
I like the way Bernadette Peters sings this song more

Good luck!
Yay. I would wanna be the witch. I...can sing. Kinda. Maybe. I dunno
Wow, I saw this last night with Patina Miller as the witch and she as well as the rest of the cast moved me into so many emotions. She did an excellent job with this number.
Her "shhhhhh", so still, so condescending. Ugh Bernadette Peters is such a queen 💕
Wow just
Wow now what they mean when they say an act gives you chills
that first "you're so nice" is so antagonistic. I'd hate to be on the receiving end of that😌

Spectacular.
Bernadette was an actual *queen* in this role
3:11 It's like she's saying "Witch" but she's saying "wish"!

These comments man… THE POINT OF THE MUSICAL IS THAT IT DOESNT MATTER WHOSE FAULT IT IS.
that, "nothing we can do.. not exactly true".. tasty😍
i love when Bernadette Peters
3:56 and 4:29 are my favorite parts of her performance in this part.
I swear this song and role are how I fell in love with Bernadette Peters. Just got to see her live a few months ago...4th row and she still sounds amazing!!
She is the best one for this role. Absolutely incredible.
Wow!! The witch is amazing !! Her vocals are sooo powerfull. I first saw the Meryl Streep version & fell in love, this equally kicks ass!
I just love how confused Cinderella is
Lmao she’s a relatable queen
Just got cast as the Witch in my High School Production... how ANYONE can top that is absolutely beyond me.
the point of the song: It doesn't matter who is to blame because blaming other people doesn't solve the problem.
this comment section: Ok but we all agree that it's this person's fault right?
Did you come from sideway?
I agree with aria ,
Anyone else find it hilarious when Jack corrects himself from saying first place to second place? 🤣
I think that's on propose
I get chills every time I watch her sing this!
God I love her. She’s amazing.
I've always had a crush on this jack

This song is probably one of my favorites from this musical
There's just something about it that makes it one of my favorite songs from this musical also listening to it through the perspective of the witch gives the song a whole new meaning and overall it adds to her character and story arch

The og "i'm too old for this shit"

sometimes i just need to come back and watch this to feel a little bit of peace again
i love Bernadette Peters so much. i can't even😭😭😭😭
Is it just me or does anyone else feel like this fictional song from a fairytale musical is inching increasingly closer to being a factual account of life as we know it, especially over the past 4-6 years? Such a gem from the sage that was Sondheim.
Witches can be right, giants cN be good.. both were true scenario...i d be damn mad if someone comes in my home, steals, kills my man and runs away
this hits so hard emotionally but also it's so fucking hilarious that the witch is like oh my god. you people are so fucking stupid. bye. and then just leaves
Bernadette peters is perfection in this role
just got out of watching the 2022 broadway version and had to rewatch bernadette peters’ version! both are so good!
Can altos sing soprano songs for auditions?
transpose it if you can. it's much more important for them to hear your voice at its full potential than trying to squeeze out a high not that's just out of your range. best of luck!
i am doing this for Musical Theatre class in a group, wish us luck!!!

Sadly, last night was the Last Midnight for Stephen Sondheim (RIP). 1930-2021.
She’s a phenomenal stage actress. 😊
I remember watching this in class and I started laughing cus of "LOOK AT WHAT I FOUND👹". When she was gonna try to sacrifice him to the giant
this cast is FANTASTIC
I remember going to see this play off Broadway in the late 80s/early 90s. Bernadette was in the cast, but that day, her understudy must have stepped in. Sick? Who knows. Would have been great to see her. But the other cast, including Dean Butler, just did such an amazing job. The understudy, as well.
Bernadette is perfection in this role
Midnight listening to this with Stephen gone 😭😭 what he created and Bernadette so magically brought to life is eternal
this song is just something different, its otherworldly amazingness
Can we all just agree that it's the baker's dad's fault?
You're right though, it's more important to fix a problem than to figure out who to place the blame on - especially since in this case, the person who is most to blame is dead.
reckon you quite missed the point of the whole thing
Love Bernadette Peters!❤️
This is great
6:06 that scream man, so blood curdling
i don’t get why people can’t understand why they couldn’t give jack to the giant. i mean, haven’t u heard of moral dilemmas? if they’d given jack to the giant, they would’ve been purposely killing a child to supposedly save the kingdom (no way to know if the giant would keep their part) and no one wants the death of a kid in their conscience
also to all of you blaming jack on the comments try to listen to the lyrics, all of them had the blame somehow (don’t forget: two of them are kids) and even then it doesn’t matter anymore cause it wouldn’t help to solve the problem
The whole point to nobody is alone is that it doesnt matter who is to blame, they are all in it together
Also yeah Jack is only a kid who wanted to make his mum proud
bernadette peters absolutely crushed this role
I just realized they’re not grabbing the beans at 5:18 because theyre greedy, it’s so another giant doesn’t come down
