The Chicago Bears cannot keep everyone on their roster, as they need to make it 53 guys by the beginning of Week 1 of the NFL Season.
Not only that, but Ryan Poles wants to avoid having any "bad" contracts on the roster so he can continue to build this team for the future and have long-term success.
There are four players on the current roster that could be on the move due to their contract situation
OT Larry Borom
WR Velus Jone Jr.
EDGE Dominque Robinson
S Adrian Colbert

I think Poles just signed velus's replacement in Malik Washington. Easy decision in that he is a UDFA. Known for being an excellent punt and kick returner.

BEAR DOWN! I don’t know why but I have a good feeling about velus Jones. I’d keep him but id be okay cutting borom, Colbert, and dom rob for cap so we can get another starting caliber player in here.
Me too. He needs to be a RB. Use him in slot on occasion for screens slants like deebo. Also kr pr. Keep him til his contract up bc his speed elite.
I do too. He might have been in the wrong system with Luke Getsy. Who knows where he will fit in the new offensive system. He might be a guy who could stretch the field.

I prefer not to cut players before they have been upgraded. for example, I expect my 53-man roster to include 10 offensive linemen + 6 wide receivers, including punt & kick returners, + 4 or 5 edge rushers + 4 or 5 safeties.
so If Borom is not among Bears top 10 offensive linemen, or Velus is not among Bears top 6 wide receivers, or Dominique is not among Bears top 5 edge rushers, then I would obviously cut them before the regular season.
no need to do it now though, since the off-season roster allows for 90 players. Bears currently have less than 90 players signed to their roster. why cut anyone until you have 90 better options?

Forget the real world for a moment. In the VR game "NFL PRO ERA" Velus was, by far, the most reliable Bears receiver and it wasn't even close. He caught everything thrown remotely in his vicinity. I literally bought his jersey last year solely for his performance in VR. MF brought us a Super Bowl and I'll never forget it.

There is no cap advantage to cutting any of those 4 before the June 1 deadline. I don’t think it is clear that there are better options yet behind them on the depth chart. It is possible that Borom could be Cut/Traded before or during camp for depth at another position. The other three make much closer to the minimum so unless they are passed up on the depth chart.

Not worried about Jones, he's pretty bad at returns. No mixed feelings about him at all. Sooooooooo many opportunities and they finally replaced him at that position do to the drops and terrible play

I once heard a great metric for the talent and toughness of any player in the trenches.
You should never hear an O-lineman's name throughout a season.
And you should always hear a D-lineman's name throughout a season.
If an O-lineman is pancaking pass rushers and blowing open running lanes, he's doing his job --- while the stadium roars.
If a D-lineman is consistently in the backfield either run-stuffing or pressuring the QB, he's doing his job --- while the stadium roars his name.
When it's the opposite, the stadium groans.
Borom and Robinson never progressed into 17 game starters.
And that creates the necessity to get them out of the way.
What it comes down is, really : their physical absence is more valuable for the Bears than the money they'll reclaim by cutting them.
An additional metric that singularly involves the Bears organization? Neither of those two played at Justin Fields' level. It's probably safe to say they never will.
But he had to be moved out of the way --- painful and frustrating as that was to see.
That's my nickel's-worth, anyway.

They're not cutting any of these guys BEFORE June 1 (unless they designate them a post-June 1 release). Cutting them before June 1 accelerates the dead cap money onto this year's cap; after 6-1 spreads it out over two years. There's no need to incur dead cap money at this stage. Poles worked so hard to clear out most of the dead cap left behind by Pace. If they need money (Trey Hendrickson?!?! hopefully), they can restructure Moore or Kmet's contract. Second, teams carry 90 guys until cut down days. Last year, there was only one deadline, 8-29. Colbert could be cut if there's another player they like better, but it won't save money off the cap. Colbert isn't a top 51 guy (those are the guys who count against the cap.) The Bears current roster is 72. I'm not saying these guys won't get cut in August, but they're not getting cut now.
We'll see what happens!

Everyone needs experienced OT's at some point each season with injuries. I think Borom will end up on a roster somewhere if he's cut. But Ryan Poles said it's going to be hard to make the roster and I don't think Borom will.
